Gurl at this point, they're not confused. They are IN DENIAL. They really put the idols on a pedestal as if FLAWLESSLY singing, belting notes while dancing like crazy is humanly possible. Like hello, even Beyonce would have to have perfectly planned choreo so she could put up a good live show. These fans are the ones that are setting their faves up smh

as someone who went to a Beyonce concert (any many other concerts before), artists often times either follow their choreography OR stop to sing because it's just not humanly possible to still sing flawlessly while breathing more heavily and dancing at the same time. But some fans will still be like "omg they had CDs for breakfast" lol

True. Like even when artists that been trained for years perform live u can tell u can hear the breath and everything and it still sounds good while they dance but u can’t hear anything but the straight voice as if they have no breath 😅
one person you can always tell if their singing live or not is chungha because whether the mic is on or not her stylist will have her COVERED in jewelry and when the mic IS on you can always hear them jingle, they do not gaf fr 😭
Tbh Chungha doesn't even bother to mouth words in parts where she's not singing, the audio will keep playing and she will just shut her mouth completely and I love it lol

as a person who trained vocally for 7 years and does musicals, it is so impossible to sound perfect while dancing, even if the dance is simple. the way aespa sounds so perfect when they sing is genuinely so impossible especially with how difficult some moves are.

It’s not even just dance they’re doing body pop&locks while hitting high notes , it’s impossible for that not to effect your vocals , they have never sang live , they have the ability but they’re not doing it , they had more difficulty with their high notes in their encore stage and ppl think live stage are actually live

The girls sound too perfect to be true, Red Velvet has sung live and even Wendy sounds tired when hitting the high notes (an example is an Umpah Umpah presentation) and on the other hand I remember when Seulgi replacement Wendy during Red Flavor, since Wendy was on hiatus because of her fall, and Seulgi when doing the last part of the song sounded muffled and flat.
It is simply impossible even if you have experience, or have an incredible technique (Wendy for example) when singing, to be able to perform the entire song without sounding tired at some point even if the dance is simple.
Fans and companies should normalize having those mistakes when singing, because at least for me they make the performance more genuine.

I wonder when we‘ll finally see aespa’s live vocals on a regular basis. It‘s such a waste of talent. In the end it’s not only making the girls look bad but SM as a company overall. I don‘t know what happened but especially since last year SM doesn‘t really let their idols sing live anymore. Groups that have been singing live for ages like Shinee lipsync all of a sudden. I’m sorry but it’s hilarious how some Kpop stans try to gaslight themselves into thinking their idols don’t lip-sync. The intro made me snort my water, on a serious note they should just accept that lip-syncing is part of the industry. It’s not a giant sin to lip-sync so long as they aren’t always doing it, but it should be accepted sometimes because how tiring it is to sing and dance.
I think company should distribute the ratio between lipsyncing and live singing rationally... like for some groups it's 85% lipsync and 15% live, it's just so bad and sad

You’re being crazy, but it’s alright let’s just hang out.” If I’m confident enough with saying it, depending on how mentally strong you are, you might to believe that I’m right. When in reality I’m in the wrong.

I just saw Yuju in the thumbnail sO I HAD TO CLICK. The way she is able to pull such clean vocals that even her producers said "you sing so well that we have almost no work to do".
Of course there are performances where she doesn't sing live, but nobody can say she is not one of the most consistent, versatile and best vocalist in the kpop industry nowadays.

i love it when idols are given lines in their comfort range and they almost always serve stable vocals like chaeyoung,itzy and jay,enhypen, about lip sync i'm neutral when it comes to music shows but i want to hear live vocals in a concert occasionally 😭😭

I've seen people ranking the Aespa girls in vocals super high, and while I do think they're probably super good as they're an SM group, WHAT ARE YOU BASING THIS ON??? WE HAVEN'T HEARD THEM LIVE YET???
IKR. The day they do a real live performance with raw vocals while dancing, only then I will be able to have an opinion on their vocals in comparison with other kpop girls.
The truth is that if they were not from SM then everyone would hate them because they "can not sing". Just because SM has a good reputation built on previous generations by definition people are claiming them to be good. However, if such a story happened to another group, this group would have to rebuild its reputation for a long time.
For example, Blackpink once had a performance that Mr removed was viral and people started hating and insulting them because they didn't sound good there, there was also issue with Twice Momo. Aespa is lucky to be from this label

They come from a show where they had to sing live and perform, the trainee that could not do that were eliminated, I am not surprised that a group that were formed like this have good vocals even when performing.

Lol at some point i actually started looking for a third voice, one for the backtrack, two for the pre-recording, three for the actual vocal that the idol is trying to push

As a former venue soundboard engineer I don't think I'd would recommend "3 layers" for show performances. Altho I worked a long time ago! I was made aware that many times when singers are singing "over" their own recorded voice tracks; adjusting the %'s for each singer is commonly done according to an engineer I talked to at an IU concert. He had worked for several K-music programs prior to 2018. "Awareness-disclaimer" possible since I think you might be aware of this since you mentioned the "third" layer.

Ive noticed this trend for many kpop groups/artists: on most music shows, the first two to three weeks of promotion are focused on the performance/dance. Then after that period, the performances are less serious. They are very live (and often have a cute or joke like thumbnail). This is how i can try to guess if a “live” performance actually is live: look at the date released after the song came out.
also, you can try on searching music bank's or mbckpop's last performances of the group, those are mostly live. a clear example are stayc

Actually Wheein and Moonbyul weren't entirely Lipping, they just chose what parts to sing and what parts to lip which is a very tiny percent.

@@akacchi5268 exactly as a group, they are flawless but as solo artist's knowing that they won't have another member to compensate for other parts of the songs , they know their limits and work around them quite well, much like Soyeon from GIDLE.
yes! they really try their best always to have great performance for moos💗 and i noticed that they're only lipping for their solos maybe because they have to sing the whole song unlike when they're as a group.

I can tell that Yuju's 2nd week performance from Music Bank was live from the very first listen. It sounds raw, her voice is wavering depends on the movement and it creates a slight shakiness, but DAMN girl didn't sound that much different from the studio version!

Can i add my two cent here? You can also tell when artists are not singing live (be it fully or not) is if they sound "metallic" then it's not live, this applies for high notes and low notes. The thing with live vocals is that it sounds "crisp" and the energy is different. IU despite having softer tone her voice she sounds "crisp", Bigbang's energy in performing is unquestionable because they sing live and use lower backtrack so you can feel their energy through their singing. The artists needs to let the audience know what their voices sounds like live to educate them. Having to always strain your ears to hear two vocals can be exhausting, instead if the artists (yes i'm talking about the artists as a whole incl. the company and the staffs, i'm not targeting the person themselves) use pre recorded as loower backtrack then the audience won't have "trust issues" over their live singing.

Bruh I just watched the famous Monster live stage with Irene (and her atrocious wig lol) and Seulgi and those are hard notes and hard choreo and SM let them sing it live!! THE TALENT. And I think what makes me angry is that SM could easily allow Aespa to do something similar (even just ONE live stage), but they don’t and for what???? To let the girls waste away while we don’t get to see what they’re actually capable of??? Bruh, I don’t care if they make mistakes or it’s not perfect because I’d rather see them do at least one live stage than not. I love aespa, but at this point it seems like toxic perfectionism is a part of the “ae” concept 💀
If SM keeps this up, the girls will never be able to sing live because they’ll be too afraid to make mistakes. They’ll have had much of their career “flawless” which will deter them more and more from doing a live stage because if they mess up people will come for them. Ugh. SM really should have started having them sing live from the beginning (at least some of the time). And then they’d also never have to hear about how “Aespa never sings live.”
I am not hating on aespa, just on SM. I love their artists, but man, I wish I could storm that company and change the way they do things sometimes!

I love how Jinjin and Rocky did EVERY performance 100% live. There is even a chat of Rocky with OBROS (a producer that did many of ASTRO's songs) where he asks if it is really live since it sounds that great.

@@xiahkixiri Ningning said they were singing live at THAT time, when they were recording that stage performance. but it's not live it counts as a pre-record because they had to re-take the performance several times, but still she did sang at that time what do you not understand..????? she probably doesn't know either that the performance audio is gonna be replaced w pre-record vocals because they used that same pre-record vocal on every stages they've had but she did sing at that time and there was proof.
@@xiahkixiri I don't know what you mean by some heavy autotuning, cause autotune do not affects someone's vocal technique using autotune will not decrease ur vocal skill whatsoever. we know they're some good vocalists even when studio vocals go through some editings, +they literally showed their recording process in studio.

And actually, I think that the fans' INTENSE desire to DENY the possibility of lipsyncing is also because of the bad reputation that lipsyncing has.
Personally, I think there's nothing wrong in lipsyncing especially if it's only in music shows. These shows continuously retake videos to get the best shots for the fancams so repetitively singing the song just for a music show episode is not worth the risk. Lipsyncing is also alright if the choreo is crazy af (Aka almost all 4th Gen dances).
Lipsyncing will only NOT be ok if it's in concerts since fans paid to actually hear the voices of their idols.
Also, another reason why these fans will willingly delude themselves into thinking that their idols don't lipsync is because of the competitive nature of fandoms. K-Pop has long been ridiculed, especially by Western people, as an industry built on lipsyncing. And because these fans want to feel validated, and desperately want to make their idols as 'not like other k-pop groups', they are so motivated to preach how their idols 'don't lipsync'

I don't follow all 3rd generation girl groups, but for recommendation, I'm quite sure GFriend most of the time always sang live during their first two years (from Glass Bead to Navillera).
Astro's JinJin and Rocky had the BEST live stages for 'Just Breathe', their breath control was honestly amazing, especially with Rocky's high notes. They even did their full 'dance practice' video with live singing instead of the vocal backtrack. But it was also the sort of song that lent itself to live performances, which allowed them to adlib when they wanted to (they shouted 'Happy Birthday' a dozen times during one performance when it was Moonbin's birthday) and inject more fun into the song.
I'm so glad you brought up Pentagon because they do so many of their performances live and as a fan its just sweet to hear those live vocals
big congratulations to enhypen!! they are still rookies but their live vocals are immaculate, they are really killing it! the performance you showed here had me screaming, their live vocals were so good besides the dance moves are pretty hard in that choreo!!
7:52 no one talking about jinrock in the comment section is in a crime!?? them being rappers have a big advantage when it comes to live singing. i'm glad they were able to sing more than rap in this sub-unit. they used hand mics to be heard clearly, even with that hard choreography. RARE MOMENTS IN THE KPOP SCENE TODAY. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!
My boys Pentagon always sound so good live, and the extra tip for recognising whether they're live or not is that they mess up their own lyrics ahah
During 2nd Gen singing live was more common. I don't understand why it changed so drastically. Kpop really became obsessed with *perfection*. It's also not a secret that they prioritize a good dance performance over good vocals.
2NE1 is a great example of prioritizing live singing.
it baffles me that ppl will listen to the encore where they are standing still and hear the breaths, voice cracks, off-pitchness (all completely normal things, especially when encores are just for fun and without in-ears) and then still believe they can sing just like the studio whilst doing some intense choreography?? like do they not have critical thinking…
the live performances of pentagon's feelin' like and jinjin & rocky's just breathe are my absolute favorites for the month of january! they're super enjoyable to watch because of the vocals

Didn't expect to see PENTAGON here because I thought this video would just revolve around 4th gens BUT DAMN seeing them first to those "SUPER LIVES" ?!?! I've been always proud of their vocals but I couldn't see much people talking about it BUT setting them as an example here really gave me a great satisfaction knowing that some other people do see and appreciate this goups' talent.

Thanks for featuring Pentagon 💕 They almost always sing live except in some collab stages, or weird circumstances like one of their members getting too injured to perform only hours before a music show. Jinho (the one doing the high note) says lip-syncing makes them feel like robots rather than singers, so they have more fun singing live. Respect to all the artists doing their best on stage!
7:52 jinjin and rocky's lungs of steel slapped me even more when I heard them sing on fansign events and in asc. Like man they're so stable I even doubted them in their live stages when I can completely recognize prerecorded stages from live ones. They're just so flawless. I- omg. They're like, arohas, no need for mr removed vids.

Mamamoo are queens of live singing, but they also know when and what part to "lipsync" to take a break/breath like the others do.
Hwasa usually just stops singing literally without mouthing any lyric and doing her "my way" when she takes a break lol very confident I love her.
Wheein is the tricky one. Her sweet and soft voice REALLY, I MEAN, REALLY SOUNDS THE SAME as her pre-recorded voice, so personally for me, she's the hardest to tell, hahaha. But of course we know she's really good, she even practiced singing Watercolor while jogging. It's easier to point out when she's belting high notes or when she's doing ad libs.
Moonbyul really surprised me with LUNATIC stages, she sings a lot and improving so much since DSOTM, I'm so proud of her ;_;

Jinjin and Rocky singing live with that energy and dancing is just amazing they scream on top of their lungs like there is no tomorrow i really really love that energy it fills you with so much of serotonin and makes you move/bop your head as well
Another thing to look out for is plosives! If you're hearing hard consonants like p, t, and k with no feedback from the mic, it's time to raise a sus flag. If you hold your hand close to your mouth and pronounce those, you'll feel a burst of air- that burst of air causes feedback or slight distortion in the mic. It's not a perfect indicator, especially for vocalists that tend towards a softer style, but it's something to keep an eye out for.

I'm glad more and more people are trying to expose the reality of live stages in 4th era kpop. It's a waste of talent the companies trying to aim for. As a kpop follower since 2th gen I found imperfect vocals in love stages are way more ear catching because I can actually hear their efforts in singing, despite of the choreo.

One of my favorite idol moments was from Seeun of STAYC who explained why she sang the wrong words to “So Bad” on stage. She said she accidentally messed up the lyrics while doing the pre-recording for the stage. They were told they couldn’t re-record so homegirl literally had to purposely mouth the WRONG words during the performance. I need people to stop denying that pre-recorded vocals aren’t a thing because idols have talked about it before lol
I see the 2016 debut boyos (Astro, Victon, Pentagon) be slaying at lives. The way I cackled at that "period" after Jinho's highnote XD Facts. Real talk tho, I realised that I am more keen to properly focus on a stage if it's actually sung live. You can see then idols are giving it all and have fun. When the lipsync is obvious (unless it's a group that can't lipsync and it looks hilarious LOL) I loose all interest because I could just listen to the audio of the song instead, you feel me? Also I'm not bashing idols for lipsyncing from time to time, idol life is hard they sometimes need the break. And in Aespa case, I really don't understand what is SM doing. They produce one of the best vocalists yet they don't let them show off their skills like???????

I HATE the competing MR vocal track with live vocals. The live vocals could be beautiful but we'd never notice because they being layered over the perfect autotuned version so the slight variations often make it sound wrong. Let them sing live or just have then lip-sync. Or, you know, give them songs that are actually possible to do well live.

I swear at times aespa barely move their mouths during performances, like visibly you can see if there was no other sound but what they were making it’d just be a whisper or breathing. They can sing live, it’s such a shame they aren’t being allowed to by the company.
just seeing this video and im sooo glad to see pentagon getting acknowledged. hands down one of the best live performers especially knowing how high their songs can be, massive respect to them (and started stanning) after learning that they were the only group to sing live every round of road to kingdom when they sounded as good as they did.

True, stray kids choreography are actually tiring, especially when one good vocalist left the group.. Enhypen too, their title track are exhausting.We can actually see that they are catching their breath and their main vocalist is given difficult moves too..

in yuju's case, i actually think she did sing live when she had her mic up but it was autotuned afterwards heavily to a point where it sounds almost identical now to the actual studio version.
