- Hi everyone!
I know its been a long time since I posted any videos! I ended up getting a bit overwhelmed by things in my life so I just had to take some time to step back from the channel. But during that time I hit 1000 subscribers!! I can't tell you enough how cool that is and thank you to everyone who has been following me for helping me achieve that. I started working on this special 4 months ago and am just now posting it, whew! Its my first long video so its a little rough around the edges but overall I'm happy with the idea and concept and hope you guys are into it as well. Thought this was a cool way to give some insight into the process of making music since that isn't seen as much as the final product!

I never realized how producing is basically like building a lego house. Just be creative and stack samples over one another haha. Of course, there are also the harmonies and melodies but the samples are like 70% of the song
And it is important to stack this samples well.
Its a lot more like cooking honestly. Samples are like ingredients you can buy from the supermarket. While cooking requires good ingredients, it also requires good technique and a good imagination. The reason why I specified that samples are "from the supermarket", is because it is also often for producers to record their own instruments, just like growing your own vegetables.
Depends on a genre.. the way u described it, it’s more how KPOP works..not all genres are 70% of samples.. I’m an edm producer and musical loop samples are rarely used in edm cuz we make our own sounds and samples most of the time

Sounds of KSHMR is imo one of the best, if not THE best sample pack!! Like it's a go to sample pack, I downloaded all 3 of them. Example of how used it is: I was scrolling through them and I found a vocal chop that sounded VERY familiar, it was from GOT7's ECLIPSE
Sounds of KSHMR definitely are some of the best packs available, but they're so frequently used at this point I almost feel they're unusable outside of the oneshots.

@@babypby39 you actually have to buy sample packs/their licenses if you want to use them, the only exception is when the producers release them for free/it's in public domain, which do exist but they're not that common because at the end of the day producers still want to be credited and compensated for their work

I really wish Sounds of KSHMR was credited and acknowledged for his extensive influence in Kpop. His packs are literally in some of the biggest songs and groups in Kpop
I'd add reason number 4: samples bring a comfortable memory to listeners, it's something our brain recognizes and instantly hang on to. Sometimes we can't put our finger on why some part is so easy to recall upon just one listening, and it's because we've heard it before.

KSHMR’s one of the best music producer on the EDM scene. Its no surprise that his samples are well known, his sounds are just so flexible in terms of sampling or just music production in general.
I think sampling is understandable, in our era it can be hard to come up with something unique. You could be making a melody and think it's different but you never know if it already existed somewhere since millions of songs have been created. It's kind of a loophole to avoid a sudden issue of plagiarism.
but one can still put in enough effort to do an original song :((. I'm so discouraged lmao I thought most of these songs were original ahh. at least to me, not sampling is very important, but thats just my personal preference.

@@alezzziia you could think of it as producers helping each other! The people who created these samples aren't going to make much money off producing them, they instead make their money by making them available to other producers who will use the sounds to enhance their songs. Its not laziness, creating music is a lot of work and using samples in a way that sounds good or unique is its own skill. Anyone can access these samples, but not everyone can make them into a hit song :)
Hell yeah it's understandable almost every artist samples. Good music is worth sharing.
Sampling isn't new. It's been around for over 50 years and parts of the music industry is built on it, mainly pop and hiphop. So don't feel bad. It's rather pretty ingenious, taking an existing sound and making it into something new. Basically all modern artists have done it at some point.
With the amount of songs in black pinks discography that contain KSHMR samples, I just know Teddy’s single-handedly keeping splice alive 😂

Can we talk about the iconic "HEY!" I use to think its Twice original call cause they had used it in most of their title tracks. But then I heard them in other songs too. Its just so iconic that now whenever I hear that sound it reminds me of TWICE...

yup that fill is definitely used in a lot of vaguely dancehall or reggae sounding songs. I've heard it also in songs by Zedd, FKA Twigs and Rich Brian
Ik it’s all legal and there’s nothing wrong with sampling when done legally but it’s so weird to find out that an iconic beat that you always thought of as sedimentary to a song is a sample

Don't get me wrong, there are tons and tons of idols who are beyond supportive, but it doesn't become a part of their group activities/schedule for reasons, so I respect ACE and OOO 😔

That 'Hip' part is one of my favourite parts on the track because it sounds so quirky🙂 The producer integrated the sound really well though, it blends really well. Same with the 'Gotta Go' one though I have not heard the song. Funnily enough, that sample used in 'María' was also used in a song from a bollywood movie, and some people were accusing Hwasa of plagiarism because of it

I've noticed SM rarely uses samples and instead they buy full demos from other producers, such as kokobop, bad boy, call me baby, psycho, etc.
Sm does more of buying demos or buying other songs and remaking them e.g. dreams come true has alr gone through 2 remakes- Aespa’s and ses’s (I was surprised to find out ses ver was a remake too)
this is something I noticed as well! I was trying to find aespa or red velvet samples but I couldn't find any! I think their producers make everything from scratch in their demos

I'm on splice quite a lot and I often come through sounds that I recognize from K-pop songs. This is such an interesting video cause most fans don't think about this part of the song. Thank you for making this video, I can see how much time you've put in!
Same with garage band for me because I use garage band so much that I recognise most of the loops. When I first heard Dear Sputnik by txt I just knew the loop from the first verse

I am producer, i can say that we use samples cause it's make the music professionnal, this is harder to mix a sample and that bring something more natural

@@iambarryallen a sample is not every time someone else sound, it can be our and most of the time, we use it because for example we can't make a sax beat if we have no sax or anything. I bet you're listening to a lot of songs that use samples and that's not a bad thing, that's interesting, and don't forget that we never do a song with only someone else samples

KSHMR is seriously underrated, his samples are used in almost every blackpink song and made so many group rise to fame and earn billions, literally no one knows him, even though, without him, I doubt kpop would be barely mainstream, considering how many songs he's influenced
He's not underrated, he has been known as a famous DJ back in the day, he also ghost produced Tsunami by DVBBS which is also one of the famous EDM songs.

I mean his Sounds of KSHMR (all volumes) have been sampled so so many times in k-pop songs like it's almost that K in k-pop stands for KSHMR :P

When I first started using Splice I found the samples from Girl Front and just made Loona remixes all day.
I also recently saw some drama over a Stray Kids song that people thought was being ripped off by someone else, only to realize the part they were talking about was a Splice sample, and one that I had used over a year before! I was half tempted to joke that Stray Kids actually stole my song, but figured that wouldn’t go over well.
This is an important topic though. Copyright and plagiarism are real, but many, many, MANY people lose their minds if they hear anything that sounds like their favorite artist’s songs. People need to understand that samples are just another musical tool, and just like any band can use an acoustic guitar, any group can use a royalty free sample.
If a song is produced with a DAW on a computer, k-pop or not, it must have samples in it. Even the shortest kick drum sound one shot is a sample. It's not a question anymore. The answer is always YES that song has samples in it. Even if they live record all the drums, most producers will layer them with samples. Great video btw, reminds me to add more samples to thicken up my tracks. I always feel the pressure to write everything from scratch but not anymore thanks to this video. Good job.
fr, a significant about of percussion and brass in songs are from samples. i feel like its almost rare to hear live recorded instruments in pop songs. its so much more convenient, and in my opinion live instrument recordings really arent necessary unless you want a more raw feeling to your song. i do love a good recorded bass line or drum performance when it comes to other genres though.

You're totally right. Almost every single popular song use samples. Sampling isn't limited to fills, risers and 808 basslines. Drum sampling is universal. There are even sample libraries based on recordings of real instruments such as pianos, strings, guitars, brass that aim to recreate as authentic as possible sound and are pretty common in music production. This kind of sampling is even more popular with movie or video game composers who have to deal with a wide range of genres, in cases where live session musicians aren't available or outside of the budget scope. Modern sample libraries can be so convincing that you can fool listeners they're listening to a real live session recording.

For those who think that using samples is lazy here’s another way of viewing it. In almost every industry u have multiple people collaborating to make a product; it’s very rare for one person to create a product in it’s entirety on their own. Sampling is a way for producers to gain inspiration and be able to create by working from ideas of other producers. A game designer for example, is not expected to create every aspect of a game and the same goes for producers. Everyone has their own speciality within a field and it only makes sense to collaborate in order to create in a way that’s efficient and innovative.

Kshmr is single handedly holding the whole kpop industry
I personally have no problem with artists using samples but when the main drop or anti drops are from samples, it feels a bit weird (even though I've not produced those samples lol.) I mean that's the whole point of samples. They're made for producing songs in the future.
Songs like Lalisa or Maria or gota go are definitely top notch songs yet when their drops come, I feel like they should've gone with something more original or atleast not royalty free :P

@@pudinkeviar4151 Sure I completely agree. But when you know the sampled pieces well beforehand, there's little to no element of surprise or that "something" that gets you hooked to a song.
Of course, it takes serious work to work on the sample along with the whole of the song. But when big labels or artists use them and get blind praises for being a bop or even original, it is uncomfortable, at least for me, because of winner takes all sort of mentality of many ignorant individuals. Maybe it is not so much about using the sample than it is about recognition LOL.
i feel like if the sample is going to be such a core part of the song then the sample creator should be credited even if it isn't required. especially if the vocal topline follows the sample.
@@aayansh3919 I think the main reason they rely so much on samples is because the fast pace of Kpop, normally a kpop group needs to release songs in every 3 to 4 months so there's no time to dig deep into creative or original when they need to get songs fast and good or hooky.

Omg loved this video also I don’t know why some people don’t like that their favs use samples like using samples is not a bad thing it’s what enriches the song production. Just bc someone didn’t creat a beat/ melody from scratch and uses samples doesn’t mean they are a bad producer if anything I think samples can showcase how well a producer can mix

The sample that was use for maria by hwasa was also used in a another song this song its not kpop and its called ram ram pam by Becky g and Natti Natasha :) now I understand why the songs both had the same sound in it

That was super interesting! As an independent artist myself I often check out sample packs looking for inspiration (which definitely works like a charm, I've composed over 1000 songs so far and it gets to a point where an idea is all that takes to start creating a new song), and eventually I stumble upon sounds I recognize from K-pop songs or even full songs based on sounds from sample packs such as Taeyeon's I, Girlkind's Sorry or DIA's Will you go out with me, so it was nice getting to know some more examples!

This is such an intriguing video, The royalty free drum etc samples are quite minimal but in the 2nd part, a lot of the samples are used substantially in the songs you selected e.g. Butter, HIP, Money etc . It'd be interesting to see if there were two kpop group songs that used the same one and the impact of that. There would probably be a lot of unnecessary drama

Learn the people, who like to gossip about an artist or band to make them look bad (or abuse them), about samples. Where to find them, how to use them etc.
There’s this sample that is in Masquerade by Chung Ha and la la love by WJSN (in the intro of the song, and is used in multiple other songs by WJSN) and i have no idea where it’s from.
can u tell me exactly where in masquerade u think it is? I will look into it and see if I can find it!

@@saozin9673 hi there, not op but i just wanted to say i dont think thats a sample its most likely a producer tag ..all 3 of the songs u mentioned were produced by full8loom (as well as other wjsn songs, ive heard this sound in other songs from them before too)

thank u so much 💖 I'm not sure where the Swipe vocal sample in the chorus comes from. its a very unique sound I've never heard before that song. it could be that the producers took a vocal sample and heavily distorted it, so in that case it would be hard to find the original. I can try looking for it tho it might be a bit hard. The electric guitar sound is probably a sample from splice since so many of the sounds from the Guess Who album are also from there. That one should be much easier for me to find.
I’m surprised by how often the sample is one of the things I like best about the song. Some of the people making these are so talented!

I thought this as well until last summer when I started saving samples! it still surprises me today when I learn some of the songs I like are actually sampled!
I've been listening to KSHMR since 2015 and I had NO IDEA that his samples were used in kpop, and to this extent! Jees, he deserved some credit :/
some of these samples are so simple that it makes me wonder why kpop producers just wont make their own sounds?…
I think its cuz of their busy schedule and they have to make a lot of songs for several groups

It explains it at the end of the video, for convenience, lack of experience (on a certain instrument), they like how it sounds or because it struck inspiration
i think they usually add these last minute or build the entire song off of them
- they don't have the materials to recreate it
- they like the sound and they don't want to change anything
- they get inspiration from it and build an entire song from it
