This Engine is built on a Type 1 1776cc using Panchito 044 Heads and the Incredible CB Performance Gen4 EFI

I have been working on the VWs since 1962 and I will have to say that you couldn't have made a better choice for an engine builder than Pat Downs. Him and his crew are the best! Excellent choice on the engine size.

Welcome back guys :) We have 3 things to say this week...
    1) If you haven't seen the main episode where we build our round the world expedition engine, then definitely watch that first! th-cam.com/video/onkxegc7Yk4/w-d-xo.html
    2) How much did this cost? What are the specs? Why we had so many engine failures previously -> www.cbperformance.com/Articles.asp?ID=340
    3) You'll either love this video, or you'll find it "too techy". Don't worry, next Thursday we start putting some miles on the Kombi and begin the 'Overland Transformation' - we can't wait to share our progress.
Support the channel and give this vid a THUMBS UP! Thanks for watching as always and see you next Thursday!

HI CBPerformance - Question - I want to build a similar engine - top concern being reliability and cooling. However different in that it will be run at 3100 rpm max - and spend 80% of its life at 3000 rpm. Are your Panchito or 44 heads better suited? Cheers Owen

I am totally impressed!!!!..........I spent ten years totally addicted to VW air cooled vehicles! I drove a '74 bus from Holyoke mass to New Orleans on a brand new rebuilt engine that blew a hole in the cylinder head all because I didn't do a break-in valve adjustment, that was almost 30 years ago! What I'm surprised is that they didn't put hydraulic lifters in this incredible build!!!!!!...........
watching this reminds me of the constant work I spent and the six or so engines that I broke in the quest to be a do it yourself-er! At one point in my folie I had 2 buses, a bug and a never finished 914! Since then, I realize that I became committed to trying to fix everything in my life myself!👊🏾😎👍🏾 hey, I just thought about something, it's quite possible the engine that I ORDERED FROM CALIFORNIA which was shipped to Massachusettes back in '89 could have come from CB!!!!!

I decided to do non full flow ser up, however. There are pro and con on that, and the pro is that if any leaks develop outside in the external loop, it can be just capped off. With full flow you cannot isolate the leak. You must repair it.

Now you have got an engine of very high specifications, its going to be up to you to drive it more sympathetically then your previous engines.. Gouging at the throttle going uphill with the previous underpowered engines with an excessive load trying to go too fast, was the cause of the many engine failures..... Please be sympathetic to this beautifully engineered power plant !!

I spent a month in San Blas at Matachen Bay, which Bill Cleary named the Mexican Malibu. The.bus plenty comfortable but as so often happened to early bus trailers my burned up on the way back. I spent week living in the bus in the VW dealer in Ciudad Obregon while the mechanics rebuilt the engine. They did such a poor job that the bus was burning a quart oil everyday heading back to the border. I just barely made it back to Santa Barbara where I had to rebuild the whole mess. I wish I would of had an engine like this!

Is it weird to say I actually liked the more unprofessional-ish series of hasta Alaska more than I like this? Don't get me wrong you guys are doing an amazing job documenting great journeys but all the breakdowns and the motivation to just keep on going no matter what was going on really inspired me... Will we have that sort of stuff in this series also?

This journey is going to be our toughest one yet, I'm sure there are going to be as many ups and downs as the last series. We are always aiming to improve our skills and pride ourselves in creating quality content but there will no doubt be harsh, raw moments on the road were we won't always be able to film as professionally as we'd like 🙂

Low 7.5:1 compression ratio, extra cooling fins, tight quench, high velocity head flow, silicone bronze guides, properly hardened camshaft and lifters = great power and longevity

I like the comment at 4:18: "And maybe that's why your engines didn't last that long previously". I'm thinking it's more than just that, like taking the engine out in the middle of nowhere.

CB performance staff have said it so many times "keeping the engine cool" never the less keep in mind that the heat transfer of the fins is optimum when clean. A simple regular wash to the outside of an air ventilated engine will take its longevity a long way.

Don't be worried about EFI ! I have been running efi on my classic triumph for years and never had a hiccup ! Better power, fuel economy, and runs perfectly at altitude .
    You won't look back

Robert Pritchard why would you ? Most modern fuel stations in the uk use a mix of petrol and ethanol but you would struggle to buy pure ethanol ! Not sure else where in the world ?
I am sure you could get your engine to run on pure ethanol but it would need a map or tune to the fuel being used

What engine oil did CB Performance recommend? What are the oil change intervals?
Sounds like a lot of oil changes are in your future... a lot of valve adjustments.
