Al has one of those rare low C basses. Ron Carter has had one for years. I assume that this performance was at a Giants Of Jazz concert, given the date. I saw that lineup. It had Sonny Stitt, Kai Winding, Monk and Art Blakey, as well as Diz and Al. The grouping, as Art said, was a bad idea, but it did give us a rare chance to see all those great players. I saw them twice, and then there was no duo. As I recall, the evening was rather unexciting.
I was fortunate to interview Art in Pittsburgh back in the mid 80s as he promoted his performance in the Jazz Festival. Blakey was from the Homestead section of Pittsburgh, PA.
Dizzy Gillespie is part of the lineage of great trumpeters.
Dizzy, one of my alltime favorites!!
But this Bass is also extraordinary..

Dizzy Gillespie has to be the pianist for this performance.
Dizzy was a very good pianist. He had a thorough knowledge of harmony.
omg when the orchestra kicks in after this long improvisation, its incredible

I have 30 or 40 CDs of Monk. But I have never heard him play this style. Nice work!
