Find Your Way, composed and performed by Katherine Cordova.
Some of you might remember that my husband wrote me a program that randomly gives me various musical constraints (time signatures, modes, moods, etc.) to help me practice composing music.
This is another composition that I wrote with the constraint of writing a song in Dorian mode. Some people describe Dorian mode as sounding dark with a hint of brightness. From the intro of the song, I wanted to call this piece "Unsettled", but the ending really demonstrates a triumphant moment after a struggling situation - finding your way.

Challenged myself to write a song in Dorian mode, very different vibe from my previous compositions. What does this song make you feel?

I feel internal struggle, perhaps with my own faith. The music sounds like a prayer being carried on the wind to me. When I close my eyes and listen, I see a weathered graveyard. A man in his younger thirties kneels among seven family graves-three disturbingly fresh. Beside him, a dying tree mirrors his own family’s decline. Time seems to have forgotten him here; the earth gently claims him, with plant life weaving through his legs, frozen in prayer. Fearing that rising might invite another death, he prays desperately that this last farewell will truly be the last. Yet, it is here in his garden of the gone, he somehow finds strength to carry on.
The more I listen to this piece the more I like.
What a gift this Saturday morning. I got chills listening to this for the first time. Excellent piece. Any movie would elevated 10x if this would be its soundtrack. 👏👏👏

I'm very impressed and can't imagine how many years it took to compose piano pieces at such a high level. Your own pieces don't get that much attention yet, but I can imagine if you include passages that have a high recognition value so that people who have heard it before will still recognize it a year later, your own pieces would get the attention they deserve.

I love it! It’s a beautiful piece. Like someone said, any movie would be 10x better with this piece in its soundtrack. I only wish I could play like this and had a nice keyboard. Mine quit working last year. The sustain won’t work anymore. It’s an older model and a brand I don’t know and don’t have the money to get it fixed or get a new one, so I’ll live vicariously through you! 😊 Thanks for sharing your talent with us! 🙏

It is different, it’s a good exercise to compose within constraints to work outside your normal patterns.

I’m interested in the random program that gives constraints for composing. Please share more of these if possible. Is there one that has you explore an Arabic scale with Andalusian cadence ?
Will do! He's included things like time signatures, modes, moods, having random combinations of those. I give it a number, and the higher the number, the more difficult the constraints. The Arabic scale with Andalusian cadence is not in the program but he can always add it!
