    I wouldn't say the winter crops plan was a failure, just an oversight. You had quite an impressive amount of crops jam packed into a small area. The birds' droppings really made the soil rich. At least now you know what works and start planning for next year.

    • @willgaukler8979
      @willgaukler8979 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      ... fewer total plant load will make things more manageable ...but better plan on general over production even with fewer of each plant ... there gonna make huge plants ...

    Hoop coop planting NOT A FAILURE! You gained experience in growing the plants. Figuring out the watering & how that can be done better. You can note what plants did well, what plants did not. You gained knowledge on what to do better next year. And the accidental invasion just added weight on the geese that are set for harvest.

      I’m afraid that it is too far through the growing season up in Vermont - the reduction in light caused by the hoop house itself will prevent the plants from growing much before the shortening days stunts them. (It’s been a tough growing season, what with the smoke from the Canadian fires blocking the sun.)

    • @joyful_tanya
      @joyful_tanya ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@doloresreynolds8145but, it's inside a greenhouse extending the growing season. 🤷🏻‍♀️❓ So it's a risk benefit ratio. Do you try to grow some quick germinating and maturing crops, or not.

    • @deed5811

  • @lararabb8888
    @lararabb8888 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    You still have time to sprinkle turnip, mustard, and other fast growing greens in the hoop coop. Throw in some assorted radishes & some oat or rye seed. All that should have time to grow up and be of good size in 4-6 weeks. This goose raid also shows you that once you stuff all the birds in there the place will be barren in less than a week.

    Don't beat yourself up over the hoop coop crop. I think it was very educational in showing approx. how long that was actually going to last. At most it would be a one week salad bar for your flock to enjoy. More of a short term supplement than an actual winter supply.

    Morgan Chard is an easy to grow plant that keeps giving. Plant itself last at yeast two years, loves pruning,gives alot of seeds,winters well. Tough plant. One downsize is it can deep root. But a deep watering makes it easy to remove the roots if you want. They will regrow if root is in the ground ( most of the time) . And gives volunteers too. Great Feed for animals and you two.

    My garden was doing very well. I had beets, carrots, radishes, lettuce and more coming up and all about 2 inches tall. I watered the garden and went back outside later that day, and all the new plants were gone!! A rabbit had got under my fence and had a wonderful meal. I was beside myself and didn't want to kill the rabbit. So, I hired a little kitten to "guard" my garden. All I had to do was feed a stray and well, it stayed in my yard, and I have not had any issues with rodents in my garden. It was a natural and safe way to deal with the problem. Win, Win, Win. the rabbit left. The cat gets shots, flea meds and regular vet visits she just stays outside...working. She is inside during adverse weather.

    Another idea for extra produce might be post-Halloween pumpkins on clearance sale.

    QUESTION. Given the amount of eating and trampling done in 1 day, do you really think this will last more then a week or so? It makes sense to grow and fill the hoop coup during the summer but not sure how long it will last when all the duck, geese and chicken enter in the fall. Thank you Morgan and best wishes. Looking forward to more videos.

      That is my question as well. In any case, definitely not a failure. And even if it only lasts a couple of days, it's a great way to transition the birds inside.

      Yay I got the same vibe. Goal was food for the geese and ducks in the winter…for what appears to be a day.

      Hopefully, there would have been full sized pumpkins to advance the amount of time that the food would last.

    You can always just cull them so you have less to feed in the winter :)

      Yup. It would also be a nice food stock to eat over winter

    Those geese are pretty clever, they definitely caused some trouble. You'll probably do better with the crops next year. Thanks for making me laugh.

    I can not believe how well you handled the chaos of moving the flock of younger geese to where you wanted them to be! kudos !! this though tells me that you need an Australian Shepherd on your farm, to be a herder and house dog, as they are not meant to be a totally outside dog.

    I read recently this … “Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.”
