About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. We dream that someday we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.
Farming is exceptionally hard, do it for the reasons you want, that’s what matters. That sunrise was beautiful.
Yeah but people will need to also pay more for food in order for people to be able to do it and lead an acceptable life, many farmers around the world do it as a second job, because they would like to do it full time, but they simply can not afford it and need to work at another job, often even full time.

P.S. According to the US Department of Agriculture, a farm is a business that creates an average revenue of $1000 dollars a month from some agricultural product. If I sell 12,000 dollars worth of microgreens a year from my NYC apartment. I am a farmer, and I have a farm.
$18k is roughly break even, but over all it works well for him.
(should have had children IMhO, none o my biz but they may regret that one day)

You may want to reinforce that door for winter. I live in Maine and learned the hard way that snow can push a door in and warp it out so animals can get out. I'm a one woman farmer who bought a 200 year old farm house and acreage 3 years ago. I'm still working on not taking on too much...but I know that's a lost cause LOL. You are sooo right about not scaling up! Do the best for you and your community.

@elfwoodadventures2103 PULEEZE tell us you have a YT channel Or some kind of social media with videos! I've been watching this channel since 2017 (I think it started in 2016). I love Goldshaw because unlike the other homesteading channels I've seen, Morgan & Allison don't have 3-4 kids they get to use as free labor every day. They are childless by choice & do all the work on the farm themselves, excluding projects that require 2 sets of hands. As much as I admire them & think I'd be cut out for farm life, the one conclusion I've come to is that nobody can run a farm alone. So as a single female who's still mulling over the idea of a 1-person regenerative farm operation, I'd LOVE to see how you do what you do. All I aspire to is raising enough animals to feed myself & have enough meat to sell to cover my expenses. But with no YT channel.

This is the definition of true happiness : when you have reached a place in life where you don't *necessarily* have an interest in "more". Because your needs and wants are already fulfilled, "more" wouldn't actually bring you much. It doesn't mean you have to freeze everything in place, but the motivation for expanding matters. Making your farm evolve and grow because YOU want to evolve and grow is more interesting of a goal than "I'll make more money and then I'll take over the world (or at least Vermont").
Also, like you said, expanding too much would defy the purpose of what made your farm a success... especially the environmental aspect. The obsession for growth and scalability, as we are seeing very much on a global scale, is NOT sustainable ; what the world needs is a farm like yours everywhere, where people can come buy their goose or duck for a price both fair to the farmer and affordable for their own household, to reduce everyone's carbon footprint and everything.

@@joshuarosen465 A couple of generations ago, his farm would have been a fairly common thing. The man of the house would work a regular job, and the wife and kids would do the daily chores. That size of operation made it possible for many country people to survive.

Watching the Clucken emerge to the strains of the Blue Danube was an absolute mood lifter!
I was in Norway earlier this year, and they don't (SFAIK) have mega-agriculture. Their farming is still family-based, on relative small (less than 100 acres) picturesque plots. I think most of European agriculture is like that. The problem, as always, is what do you do when your kids don't want to continue the family tradition? In Norway, I'm told, if there's no one to take over a family farm, it is open to be sold or auctioned to the neighboring community.
“Taking care of animals and building and creating things” sounds idyllic! And as an AuDHDer, I adore your breaks in the narrative to show things like sunsets! I feel so represented! 😃
The farm can be as large or as small as you want it to be. You have a voice for several causes and your place is among the great story tellers. Keep telling your stories and the farm will take care of itself.

In the rural county where I grew up and lived for many decades I learned that over 100 years the number of dairies dropped by a factor of 10, and yet the number of cows remained unchanged. The dairies had just become larger. It was an unusual fact that I learned about while living with my ex wife who worked for a time as a rural business specialist.
Loved the old boy summing up the farm life…thanks for the laugh‼️ 9 years of my hard life were as a child on 640 acre farm of grain fields and animals just for us at the house. My mother taught us everything we needed to survive then I never wanted to see dirt again🙈. But second husband and I had raised beds, glorious flowers and the good life. The dirt was next to godliness❣️ Adore your channel.

Well I'm thinking you got it right, a small boutique farm (loved the rant piece), that keeps you closer to the animals and the land, it's a good thing. I think you are absolutely doing what's right for you and the environment. People often underestimate the importance of "joy" in what they do. I do also think it's important to note that additional income from social media allows you not to compromise on what you think is best for you and your farm animals. There are other farmers who don't have that ability and have to make their farms more profitable, even if they don't like it, just to pay their mortgage and support their families. It's just not something everyone is able to do.
Very well said 👏 the corporate greedmonsters have ruined everything. I periodically have panic attacks when I worry about plant blight/disease since Monsanto has basically killed off the variations of strains that would offer some protection against those inevitable things. They're ending up creating super bugs too with all the chemical pesticides😱

Your farm is exactly what you want. Bigger is not always better and from what I see yours is quality as well. Your animals are well cared for and lead a good life until.... THAT DAY! Your farm is perfect Morgan, as long as you have produce for your community, you're a valuable member of it. I've grown to love Abby, I used to think she was a scatterbrain. She's not a Schwarzenneger like Toby, she's evolving into a gentle heroine.
Some of my best memories is of being on my Uncle’s small farm during the summers. They didn’t have an indoor toilet when I first remember being there, but it wasn’t a hardship. I miss the adventures I had, the chores, learning how to string beans and shuck corn. I hope to have a small farm in my next life :)

When calculating the $$ earned from the farm, are you also adding the cost savings from the food you produce for yourselves? Eggs, poultry, beef and soon pork? That sunrise would make a great desktop wallpaper! Gorgeous!
I love the farm life you have created mostly because you have found a way to also substantially give back either through fundraising for your community or offering excellent farm products. You, on your own, are sustaining yourself enough to contribute. That is the goal of human beings!

Morgan a good farmer knows all their animals ..some number them so name them but they do know there animals. They just don't tell everyone they don't want to expose their heart. Mo' farm, mo' problems. I don't think you'd be happy at all scaling up. You've found your sweet spot and I think you've made a niche for yourself by teaching others how to manage a farm while having a life.
As far as the channel goes, you're farming inspiration for a lot of people who aren't sure if they should make the leap or not. I hope you stay on that path because there's a real need for it on the horizon.
I think you are very smart in the way you run your farm. It's like the pioneers did it. You are making food for your family and some to sell/share. Who knows what is coming to the USA and being as self-reliant as possible is very wise.

Oh, yes - small is beautiful. And keeping control of your own business based on your own vision is a high priority to some people. Then they can keep their business going while larger businesses grow quickly and then fail quickly.
One person or family farms used to be common, then big farms came in and taxes made it hard to keep going. You are doing this for yourself, keep it up and have the life you want! And thank you for sharing with us!

As you are growing and building your farm fairly and sustainably then I think that is a win for everyone. You do offer some products to local businesses that can provide meals for others. For your part in the bigger picture I don't think anyone would suggest that part of your plan should include ways of providing sustenance to a larger population. You do your part successfully and each individual does their part and the whole world benefits!

You talked about moving them from the fields to the barn area when it got too cold for them. What is too cold for Highland cows?? They're used to frigid winters in Scotland 😊

My husband and I started an electrical contracting business. Every time we tried to go big we lost our asses. Our best model was us and a couple of electricians doing service work. Leave the big contracts to the big guys. You are absolutely spot on. You have total control and can keep your expenses under control. Employees and payroll can be a nightmare. Hardest part of a business.
I've been meaning to suggest you make the "bird door" a dutch door. If you cut the door so you can leave the lower half open while leaving the top half closed you will keep in more of the heat during your winters.
Two more hinges and another clasp along with a saw cut should do it... The advantage of having made the door yourself.

I love the weird chicken moment of zen so much, it keeps making me think I'll wanna keep chickens when we finally get to move up to our property. But then I remember that chickens are a lot of work every single day, and I already have a full time job and five ferrets, and I'm already kicking myself for volunteering for extra projects at work.. so maybe I should just be happy with your chickens and leave it at that! 😂
Morgan, I don't often comment on this format because I think the majority of channels aren't really honest, I guess is the best way to put it. I have a few that I know are real, a lot like yours. You are an enigma to me here living as you do and sharing it with the world. I watched the interview you did with the young couple from LA. You seem to be a natural at this. And this vid was very good. You didn't disappoint me with your vulnerability here. It takes someone who is a thinker to know when enough is enough, not a plodder who must succeed, I'd not be concerned about feeding the world, or just /Vermont. By feeding yourself, your animals, your mother earth, you are sustaining the world. Keep up the great vids.

What about 'livability'? If you - or any of us - has a life we love, with creative outlets, opportunities for solving problems, and moments to gaze at the sunrise like you do, why wouldn't we take advantage of that? Sometimes scaling up comes out of wanting more and more money or needing to provide for a larger family. But it doesn't necessarily bring us joy. I've learned that scaling up can add more stress. I know this firsthand working in the public sector for nearly 50 years. I found that the larger the institution I worked for, the more stress I experienced. Now I understand that it's really about your individual, unique goals in life. In my case, I came to the realization that peace was my ultimate goal. So, I retired; and now I have that. Morgan, I think you are clearer about your life goals at a much younger age than I was. Good for you.
Nothing wrong with having a small farm for your own enjoyment and for educational and entertainment purposes for your TH-cam viewers/content. No reason to apologize that TH-cam is your main money maker and your farm is your dream/lifestyle.

The environment would probably be a better place with lots of small farms like how things used to be than the large scale farming operations of today
That's impossible though. Used to be that ~80% of the population was needed for farming now with massive farms and machinery were down to ~2%. It would make no sense to go back nor is it even possible.

It would be nice but Americans would have to drastically cut back on meat eating to go to a system where all meat was raised sustainably. The amount of calories per acre grown just would never work. Calories per acre of grain and soybeans is way higher than grazing cattle, which is why most cattle and pork farms are feed lots.
I don’t really ever want to see a day where Americans can’t have access to inexpensive meat, and can’t afford to have high protein diets consisting of meats in daily life.
