    • @Sarafimm2
      @Sarafimm2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's fairly easy when you work with your animals every day. You have to watch them and sort of inspect them to make sure they're doing well every day. The females stay mostly over a few years so he ends up knowing who is who. The ratio of males is lower than females, so he has fewer names to come up with for them, but there are also a few males who have stayed several years. Bruce the Buff Goose was given to him (as a "re-home" I believe) and Morgan said he's going to use him to add more Buffs to his flock so I suspect he'll be around for a few years more than his normal male geese. That Bittern (heron) was probably checking out your pond because of all the tadpoles and frogs in the area and got spooked by Toby or the farm birds because it's wild and "doesn't belong there".

    A positive way to look at it is that bitterns wouldn't come close to a typical farm, so the fact that it was even in the area is a great sign for the work you're doing to balance your local ecosystem. While it's sad that that one died, it's a sign that there's potentially a local population that as a whole is benefitting from your land.

    Hey Morgan - hope this helps a little. The rooster (dad) is a Lavender split to black - he carries both Lavender and black genes. Depending on what genes they got, they may stay that color or grow and produce some cool feather leakage. A lot of our lavender chicks come out like the lighter colored one you have - with that pattern, and it may lighten over time. Unfortunately, sex-linked colors are a bit more difficult in silkies (however, you could be correct of sexes - that is a bit above my knowledge). The only real sex-linked colors I can do as of now is our Chocolate/mauve/BBS.

Maybe to help with your problem with the ducks escaping through the dog door, they have these dog doors that stay locked until your dog approaches with a tag/key on their collar that the door can read automatically. Birder here, it looks like the bird is an American Bittern! The stockiness of the bill, leg color/shape, and the striping on the neck is some good tells. Edit: I just got to that part in the video where you give your guess LMAO

    • @Psylaine64
      @Psylaine64 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually think its a yellow bittern going by the legs and flash of yellow on the eye/bill area, they are pretty rare but migratory (wiki didnt help with countries much tho lol). Might be why it wasnt in Morgans pack on his phone tho

    • @Earthtail25
      @Earthtail25 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Psylaine64 I'm going to politely disagree. Not only are the legs similar color, but American bitterns also can have that flash of yellow, which I am not seeing as distinctly as one would find on a Yellow Bittern. Also, the yellow bittern has an overall tawny color that the American Bittern does not -- it's generally darker like the one Morgan found. Plus, considering Yellow Bittern are resident birds that are rarely known to migrate long distances (none of which are recorded on the East Coast of the U.S.), it is BEYOND unlikely that it'd be a Yellow Bittern. One more thing that clears it up is the parallel streaking on the beak/head that Yellow Bitterns completely lack. I assure you, it's just an American Bittern. Merlin is a great app, but it should never be a dictation for what is or isn't in the area.

      What makes you think a bittern and not a Green Heron?

    • @Earthtail25
      @Earthtail25 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AndriaSchwortz Green herons generally have thinner built bills when compared to the bittern. Juvenile green herons tend to have the striping that bitterns do, also even as a juvenile the darker cap would be visible. :)

    11:11 Maybe use magnets (neodymium?) at the lower part of the "doggy-flap" and a "attractive pairing" (or just metal) on the frame below the flap, so it is "magnetized shut close"
    So a dog is strong enough to overcome the magnetism, but a duck/geese is not strong enough.

    The dog door that Toby uses at the Duck house might be rehabilitated by either, adding some weight at the bottom of the door(flap) or making the whole door a bit stiffer, you can exploit the strength that Toby can bring to bear when using Toby’s “doggie door” compared to the amount of force a Duck can bring to bear when accessing the “doggie door” to enter or leave the Duck house. Thank you for many hours of enjoyable informative content.

    Toby sure knows, that the little ones are babies and I think he had a really loving mother, because he really is always around your bird families and understands it, when you show him new birds. He get´s their scent, to recognize them as part of the flock and when the little ones, that you hatched or got in the mail got their first outside space in the brooderhouse, he always is around there, if no bird family is freeroaming at that time. Believe me, Morgan, Toby is a very very intelligent dog and he does know, that a new family needs extra protection at day. You really trained yourself a natural talented protector ^^

They are in a small, grow-out pen now, and couldn't get away from it. I can't let them free-range with my others, as the big roo would kill them. He's 1/2 Cuckoo Maran. Other half is either Welsummer or New Hampshire. Spring hatch ended up 3 roos and 1 hen. This guy is gorgeous. Going to look into getting more hens for the cochin pen this fall.

    Barn cats could surprise you. One of mine did a couple of residences ago. Our guineas hatched a clutch in the yard.
    Catching those keets was not a party..but I digress.
    One of my boys snatched one and the tirade that started coming out of my mouth was unmatched. He took off, holding it in his mouth to some underbrush across the road. I never quit hollering as he escaped. I finally took a breath, figuring it was over for the baby and that cat would be on his own until I cooled off.
    I was hosing ducks and that cat came back down the driveway, with the keet and let it go sort of close to the tree our guineas hung out in. It was fine and my boy got all the cuddles.
    I still have him.. he's about 18 now and deaf so his outside time is confined..55mph road out front...just safer on a string.

    Hey Morgan, my dad often used bicycle wheels to fix these types of transportation problems. He liked them bcs they lifted the item off the ground by 6 inches or more and that cleared most issues (deep grass, mud, etc) around the property.

    Thank you for this video, Morgan! Also, this year's version of the shade mobile is a big improvement. The silkie mama hen is adorable and so are her chicks!

    Hey Morgan, to help with the doggie door duck problem, you could try installing a dog door which closes with magnets. The ducks won’t be able to push it open but that’s easy work for a dog.

    With the doggie door, you could try to put a stick or a board across the bottom of the door, at a height that Toby dog can easily step over but the ducks find it too tall (maybe a foot tall) and also cannot scoot under it. The flappy door would flap over it when Toby goes across easily.

    Morgan, I just love watching your videos. They put a smile on my face. I know it was unfortunate regarding the 1 bird but those little chicks are sooo cute! Thanks for sharing your precious animals with us. ❤

    Hi Morgan. I'm a longtime birdwatcher, & the bird you found that was strangled is a Least Bittern. American Bitterns are much larger while Least Bitterns are smaller & chunkier like the one you found.
