We shot the BRN-601, XBRN16E1 and BRN-16A1 Model rifles and all flawlessly cycled full 20-round magazines out-of-the-box. We also had some fun “dumping” full magazines, i.e. shooting as fast as we could. Frankly, in such cases the only real hard thing with these Retro Rifles is to resist the ramboesque - or better, childish - temptation to feel and act like the heroes of so many Vietnam War films we all saw at the movies or on TV, from “Green Berets” to “Full Metal Jacket” and “Platoon” to name a few.
Technically speaking, our test was satisfactory too. Spent cases were ejected with machine gun-like regularity, falling in the same spot, and sights are adequate for military use.

I had the m16A1 in Marines. Best M16 ever made. We should never changed to the A2.
Kinda wish I could locate a AR-10 with classic 15 aesthetics. The caveat being I want to mount the retro 4x scope and unless I do some creative machining on the BRN 10a, I'm stuck with a scope-less rifle. Still thinking drilling the handle/guard on the BRN 10 would be my easiest bet, I just need the hardware to be low profile as to not inhibit use of the old style charging handle. The pain of wanting 308 capacity but without fuggly lookin rails and over-complicated externals.

I noticed the BRN-601 you fired was very early Brownells production, serial #58, possibly the same one Military Arms Channel fired in a video. My BRN-601 is early, too, about 20 units later and I also have the lighter lower receiver and darker upper. So it seems these early Nodak Spud receivers Brownells bought don't match color as well as recent BRN-601s but no complaints as I love the C and Splintered A upper (Anchor Harvey forge) we got. The new uppers don't have the C (which I like to imagine means Colt! And I pretend the A means ArmaLite!) Nodak Spud said the C was removed after the first production run. I notice the bolt carrier has been changed for a better, shinier chrome than the original matte carrier. Unfortunately the replacement carrier has serrations for a forward assist. Anyway even with little mistakes here and there these Brownells Retros are amazing. I love my Mean Green Jungle Machine BRN-601!

The 01 should have a 1/ 14 twist barrel.
