Its not my a peel but its your gun do whatever you want just don't get mad when i say your firearm is fugly. Like Eric's sporter mosin he even named it fugly in the title lol. I rather spend 20k collecting one gun from ww2 than building a ugly looking gun.

    The first time I picked up an actual SP1, it was love at first sight! The rifle was not much bigger than an M4-style carbine, and certainly not any heavier. The retro-style AR is now the standard against which I'll judge all new rifles. While picatinny rails and free floated handguards may be an improvement to the AR, I think overall we've lost our way with Stoner's original, brilliant design.

    LOL! Used the M-14 until deployed to Nam. We had the 3 prong flash hider (yes, good for popping the bands on a case of C rations.) We called them "Mighty Mattels." With ball ammo, the close range sight was set to 6 o'clock hold on 200 yd target, point of aim point of impact @ 300 (like a .45 auto changing from 25 to 50 yds.) My last M-16 long range dope was + 3 elev at 500 w/ long range aperture flipped up. Of course, we didn't have those fancy bags et al to brace on or scopes used today. :) At 500 yds or meters, you could shoot, hear that "screen door spring twang" and there hear the bullet hit the target. (Much shorter time of flight with an M-14. :) ) 4 MOA was the max standard for mil rifles back then. A good rifle was about 2 MOA. It would be nice to see an option for a 1 in 7" or 8" twist to use the heavier bullets of today tho. 3,200 fps was nice for advertising; but, I've always preferred penetration.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The whole point of the original M193 55-grain round was the high MV, which allowed sufficient velocity to fracture the bullet into several fragments upon hitting the targeted enemy soldier. That's how Eugene Stoner and his team managed to produce an assault rifle which - while using a smaller, lighter cartridge, was able to inflict wounds equivalent in lethality to the older and larger .30-caliber rounds it replaced. Below 2600-2700 fps, the bullet shattering effect isn't as reliable, and the 55-grain projectile's lethality drops off as a result. The projectile could still be lethal, but wasn't as reliably lethal at ranges out past 250-300 meters, which was the design envelope of the original weapon, since it had been found that most infantry combat engagements took place at 300 or fewer meters. The newer OTM bullets being used now, however, by the U.S. military, fragment reliably at a wide range of muzzle velocities, and are not as-dependent upon high MV for their terminal effectiveness as the old M193 and M855 projectiles. If the reports from Afghanistan and Iraq are at all correct, the use of heavy, 70-grain plus projectiles has also allowed our Marines and GIs to extend their effective ranges to beyond 800 meters, in some cases.

    • @xandercager5276
      @xandercager5276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Believe it or not after all of the technological advances and changes to the weapon 4 MOA is still the requirement for an m16 or m4.

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ MarineBoar: Re: "It would be nice to see an option for a 1 in 7" or 8" twist to use the heavier bullets of today tho. 3,200 fps was nice for advertising; but, I've always preferred penetration."
      The Brownells M16A1 replica has a 1:12 right-hand twist barrel, for historically-accuracy. Windham Weaponry, however, elected to issue their replica with a 1:7 RHT barrel so that the user can fire modern bullet styles and weights, and not get limited to M193 55-grain. You can sort of see both points of view: since the vast majority of folks train with M193 that 1:12 makes sense from that standpoint. But since more-modern variants of the rifle have utilized everything from M855 on up to 75-80-grains, the 1:7 makes sense in that respect. Having options is a good thing, right? Windham sells their upper as a stand-alone piece, if you are interested in that.

    • @cs-rj8ru
      @cs-rj8ru 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeorgiaBoy1961 The thing about the Windham uppers is that they use the A2 govt profile 1/7 barrel. it's a heavier contour than the pencil barrels used on the Standard M16A1. I imagine they just use what they have on the shelf....

    • @GeorgiaBoy1961
      @GeorgiaBoy1961 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cs-rj8ru - Yes, I understand that to be the case also. Windham claims the difference in weight isn't much - but if the balance is off, it doesn't take much. A2 barrels have always felt a bit front-heavy to me, which I take to mean that the center-of-gravity is too far forward on those rifles.

    During my brief but honorable 4-year tour of duty with the M16 rifle (1980-84), I must confess that there was nothing neat about the original A1 version when you have to adjust windage and elevation with a nail or the tip of a round. After that, the military planners decided to "progress" in the weapon's development by actually putting windage/elevation adjustments in the rear----kinda like the "obsolete" M14 and M1 Garand rifles.

I was in Air Force Law Enforcement (before the law enforcement specialist and security specialists combined into Security Forces) so you know we didn't get the top of the line M16s, like the Marines or Army. My main duty weapon was the M9 Beretta, but I still got detailed to guard planes, bomb dumps or entry points when security was low on people. I love the nostalgia factor of the M16A1.

  • @Spangdaddy1

    The original barrel twist was actually 1 in 14. That was the AR that Gen Curtis LeMay fell in love with and purchased for his SAC troops. It was also what those early SF advisor’s took with them to Vietnam. Let’s just say 1-14 and 1-12 leave horrific wounds on human flesh just as long as nothing is in between like grass leaves tiny twigs. Then that M193 55 grain bullet will deflect because it’s just stable enough. The switch to 1-7 with the A-2 was to accommodate new requirements to penetrate a steel helmet at a greater distance (62 grain bullet) dictated by NATO adoption thus the M855 and NATO SS109.

    • @budfans
      @budfans 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there are alot of reasons the m16 was about 2 pounds lighter you could carry more ammo also easier to disassemble and you could fire full auto with good accuracy without hosing the whole barn and less recoil and dont forget easier to reload

      Shawn Benfield Not all of that is accurate though, I remember hearing a number one time about the rounds fired to kill ratio in Vietnam that was unbelievable it was so bad. Full auto fire will never be efficient. And 7.62 x 51 would have been superior in that war in dense jungle.

    • @mikec8086
      @mikec8086 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jordanaug81 that's mostly because we were sending draftees to an unpopular war with little full auto training. Either way, the jungle was fairly thick and you really couldn't see anything which resulted in situations like in predator with everyone unloading. The m14 wouldn't have fared any better and was more prone to lose accuracy.

    sounds like the same LOUD annoying trigger reset click the JR Carbine has. So it would need a better trigger. The 1;12 twist rate in the barrel will cause the bullet to "yaw" turn sideways in flight, killing the long range accuracy. ( probably WHY it was consistently hitting left) And nowhere can I find how many riflings it has. For $1300, they are nuts. You can buy two PROVEN Bushmasters or Winhams Govt A4's for that.

    • @dcd-pn3sd
      @dcd-pn3sd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YUP. Agreed. I just think Brownells are way outta line with their $1300 price for that when its NOT really A1 or A2 spec.. Any Bushmaster or Windham Govt model ( $700) could just have the hand guard changed and meet specs. . They come with a better trigger and also have the Govt correct twist rate And you KNOW what you are getting quality wise. You need a 1;9 twist rate with a 6 groove rifling to get any really good long range accuracy,, especially with light 55 grain ( M193 ) bullets. The military found that out the hard way with the M16. Brownells 1;12 twist is more suited with 62 grain ( M 855 ) or NATO spec bullets.

And they both shoot very well to not it it and they also did stop to remove it. Not bustin your balls brotha.

    The dust cover is A2. Chads a pretty good Marksman. That’s a outstanding weapon and trusty, no batteries needed. I expect a fellow Devildog to shoot outstanding. Roger that

      Late production M16A1s had the large pad dust cover, so not really incorrect.

    Best 100 yard group I've ever fired was with the original Colt AR-15 Sporter with the Colt 3x scope and Winchester white box par-military ammo, 5 shots in 5/8" the first five shots from that rifle.

    In 1989, I was issued one of these in Basic training, and was pretty much issued same rifle for my 4 years active duty, only combat arms were issued the A2s then. Got my first A2 as a guardsman in 1995.
