I'd be interested in knowing your thoughts on what an acceptable amount of potassium is for those of us on a blood pressure med that can mix poorly with it. I'm on lisinopril and am supposed to avoid too much potassium, though I've never been informed what amount is too much (100 mg?...300 mg?..1000 mg?). Like most everyone else, I would love to get off this medication one day. I keep hearing, on this site and many others, about the miraculous and natural blood-pressure lowering effects of potassium while also being told to avoid it if taking lisinopril.
@ I was actually never told about avoiding potassium when I was put on lisinopril over 10 years ago and was never told on any of my yearly checkups. I started a carnivore diet a little over a month ago and, in an effort to stave off any cramping issues, started paying closer attention to supplementing electrolytes. It was only through researching the best brands and recommended amounts that I discovered I wasn’t supposed to be taking potassium. I understand everyone is different, but I don’t see anyone even venturing to give a low, baseline number for people on this med to start with.
I have a suggestion and just to cover basis (consult with your doctor). Try taking your medicine 4 hours before you eat OR 4 hours after your last meal to see if this prevents a negative interaction or side effects.
@ i appreciate your advice. The problem (as I understand it) is taking too much potassium (again, whatever “too much” is) while taking lisinopril can, over time, cause a dangerous buildup of potassium in the heart. So, there is no immediate reaction, but unknown damage done over time which could end in disastrous results. I have cautiously been taking 500 mgs, spread out over the course of the day, as a way of helping avoid muscle cramps due to the carnivore diet. I would love to increase that amount as a way of also naturally lowering my blood pressure. Alas, the only mention by any specialists online concerning potassium and bp meds is to avoid it, all while (accurately, I’m sure) extolling the virtues of increasing potassium to naturally lower blood pressure!
