Homeless, Poverty & Deprivation In The Heart of Bristol 24hrs in 'Caravan City' Part 1

  • In the heart of Bristol can be found the largest Homeless Encampment in the UK. An area within the centre of Bristol that is home to more people who live homeless in vehicles and caravans than anywhere else in the UK, dubbed 'Caravan City' by the national tabloids due to the huge numbers of Decaying Caravans and Abandoned vehicles that the residents of 'Caravan City' call home... In this video i spend 24 hours as a resident of 'Caravan City' to gain an insight into the difficulties faced by the homeless residents living in Caravans and vehicles. During my 24 hours on Caravan City i spent time with the residents living how they do... Cooking, Washing and sleeping in my Van. What i found in Caravan City really shocked me, the numbers of homeless people is overwhelming... With some of the worst poverty and deprivation that i have seen on my travels across the UK. In street interviews we hear from the residents of the caravans but also the home owners in the area to gain a balanced view of the Housing Crisis sweeping through Bristol currently.

I believe you’ve done a rather superficial job of reporting on the situation, Joe. There’s much more happening there than meets the eye, and diving into it without proper study and reporting only scratches the surface, making things worse.
I truly think you’ve missed an opportunity to both make friends and contribute in a meaningful, productive way that could improve people’s lives and the world at large.
Perhaps you could reach out to someone there, get to know the situation better, and possibly collaborate on another video with them?

I appreciate your input and respectfully maintain my perspective.
It's crucial to delve deeper into complex issues to truly understand them. For instance, did you know that the majority of the caravans shown were owned by a single individual? This kind of detail can drastically alter understanding of the situation.
Joe's approach, while perhaps well-intentioned, fell short of even coming slightly close to capturing the complexity of the issue at that location.
Rushing into commentary without a thorough understanding can inadvertently harm those involved, many of whom are already struggling.
Regarding mainstream media, I believe it's important to acknowledge that it sets a very low bar these days.
Instead of comparing one’s work to others, striving for excellence on one’s own terms is essential. Joe whilst clearly not lacking talent could be putting his skills to much better use by taking a less superficial position and finding out more about the dynamics of the site before making a piece on it.
Even the Sun covered it better because they just did a public interest piece wandering round and complaining about the rubbish without finding out anything about why it’s there or what’s going on presents an extremely superficial take, which, judging by the comments many have run with.
In this case, it's evident that more research was needed before making any public statements.
Ultimately, spreading incomplete or inaccurate information can have serious consequences, perpetuating misunderstandings and false assumptions.
It's essential to approach these matters with care and a willingness to explore all facets of the issue, there are probably people who have lived at the site for years whose perspectives might have radically altered Joe’s perspective.
And if you're still having trouble understanding, consider the difference between long form and short form conversation. Sometimes, delving deeper is necessary to fully grasp the complexities at play.

i work full time and last summer me and my college age son became homeless when my landlord gave us a no fault eviction notice. We looked at a number of flats but were not accepted for any of them (due to being a single income family and my income was not over the minimum £30,000 requirement ) I had to sleep on my old mums livingroom floor and my son stayed with other family. Most of us are one paycheque away from poverty. One landlord took a chance on us and now we rent a lovely 2 bed little house with a little garden area and my own parking space ! Local authorities just cant cope with the shear number of people needing decent quality homes.

I lived in a caravan on a farm for 10 years. There was around 15 other vans there too. We payed council tax , had our rubbish collected and it was clean and friendly. the pitch rent was reasonable too. Everyone was happy. When the farm’s lease ran out, the wealthy Christian land owner wanted the farm shut down as he didn’t need the money or care for the people living there.where it remains uninhabited 7 years later. Another local farmer wanted to diversify his farm and allow us ,a limited number of residential caravans to live there and supplement his struggling farming business. The local council flatly refused and so we were left to find alternative places to live under the radar. The government and councils have brought all these problems on themselves and let thousands of people struggle and suffer. There are easy solutions to a lot of the housing problems like what I mentioned but they just don’t care or have any intellectual foresight . A roof over your head should be a basic right. We need better people in power before Britain becomes irreparable

The Christian agenda in the uk is diabolical. They're a cabal in my opinion that facilitate wealthy landowners I get where you are coming from.
They infiltrate councils and parish councils. The grass root christians are dominated by them. They originate from nicky dumbells south London alpha church. Full of bankers barristers and other wealthy groups. Its sinister. Seems to lead back to other wealthy cult groups whose scaffolding they climb on. Say no more.
Meanwhile Nero fiddles whilst Rome burns.
I would like to do b n b in my annexe. Its been vandalised twice. I repeatedly get requests to sell my home and land...to the cabal...who are monopolising my area.
Any individual trying to think outside the box say like the farmer you worked for...gets shut down..frozen out...its sinister. Creepy and downright evil. From what I've seen it has its roots in paganism and satanism more than chrjstianity.
If you say that...they send the thought police after you.

According to a report, people are entitled to a home, by not providing houses they are denying people the right not only to housing, but the warmth, comfort and safety of a home. The rubbish, there is from an undercover police operation that deals drugs out of the police lock up to student members of the public (and also gives the caravan community a bad name).
I’m sure you can work out what the interest is in the authorities colluding to do this kind of thing, they run drugs out of the caravans from the police lock-up they make money off of stolen drugs that would otherwise be incinerated under the auspices of catching criminals, which they never do, and the police, or at least the intelligence assets who would’ve otherwise ended up in prison, sit around, making piles of rubbish that the taxpayers, then complain about!
Why the city council do nothing to clean it up might be because they are well aware that it’s an undercover operation and the police never arrest the obvious drug dealers dumping the trash because they are in fact working for them which is why they can afford top end tidy looking caravans and the public don’t understand any of this and just think that it’s all caravan dwelling scum!
Bristol City Council - refuse to clean up the rubbish because they want it there, in the same way that they won’t do anything about the drug dealing because they want it there… these people might be struggling, but you need to understand the larger picture.
The incredibly unsubtle undercover operation is bringing the entire site down. Almost everyone else there is just struggling with varying degrees of poverty.
All those Joe interviewed, were not doing too badly as they have there own vehicle, they can drive and they can move away if things get difficult…
      Many don’t have that luxury…
In any event, the only people dumping rubbish there are those working with the police- framing, the Homeless is something authorities have done for a very long time!

As someone who lived in Bristol for nearly a decade, I do sympathise with these van dwellers. The trend did start back when I was living in the city, and I was tempted to join in at one point!
When I was living in Bristol, rent prices were absurd, and now they're even worse, and when you combine that with the recent boost of the van life trend (especially in a city like Bristol) this really isn't all that surprising.
There's absolutely no excuse for the rubbish, though. It's a filthy, inconsiderate thing to do, and it's always done out of laziness. There are bins around and waste disposal yards.
Good video anyway! I'm still working on my van. There's not much to do really, as it's only a Transit Custom, but time consuming nonetheless!

Rough sleeping, wild camping, van life, boat life the lot is totally illegal to live full time. They expect every single person to live at an address with a postcode so you are all paying council tax.
For this reason they will never provide a site for homeless people to pitch their caravan for free, if they do provide a site it will have a postal code which means each caravan will be required to pay council tax if living there more than 4 nights in a 7 day week.

I've worked all my life, now in my fifties and I'm treading water monthly like so many others when the wages hit my bank. Its a struggle to pay my rent which is nothing compared to recent rent rises so I can only imagine how tough it is for people paying today's prices. I only hope that they find a solution to the caravans and vans that is beneficial to their owners before this mirrors the huge issue in the USA but sadly I doubt it. Thank you for taking the time to stay there overnight and give a full picture rather than brief interviews swayed to one party or another I've seen. I'm a van lifer through choice, there's a huge difference between choosing or being forced into the lifestyle 😢

The landlord of my rental accommodation increased the rent (despite doing no work on the property to deal with the damp or mould) from 575 to 800 in fowl swoop!! The rubbish is piling up in that specific location because it’s part of a covert drug operation by the police.
The council won’t do anything about it because they’re hoping it will bring the homeless that they don’t control into disrepute whilst the police get rich off of selling drugs out of the lock up even those doing it are also just victims being used by the system because they would otherwise would end up in jail for things, they wouldn’t deserve like petty drug use…
Operations like that require oversight unfortunately such oversight is only answerable to The Home Secretary and so, without members of the public doing very specific freedom of information requests that information never becomes public.
That’s a pretty enormous loophole in the system that the police can freely exploit for criminal purposes so why wouldn’t they? ..since there’s nothing stopping them..
It’s no good, taking a surface value perspective on things and thinking that you’re contributing anything useful to the conversation, I broadly agree with your comments so I’m sorry if that seems harsh.
It’s worth bearing in mind that there is always more going on than meets the eyes!

As mentioned, your tax money is supporting the police leveraging individuals that they’ve previously busted to be dealing drugs and dumping of rubbish on public land, those individuals in question are not poor, they are in fact, funded by the authority and have tens of thousands of pounds to waste, they own most of those caravans.
They dump their rubbish because they are fully aware that they cannot be prosecuted since they are working on behalf of the authorities in a ‘covert’ capacity. -that’s more the point…
Such operations are supposed to have oversight, but since they are also supposed to be secret who is going to be able to monitor if they do or don’t comply with the law …
If you want to know more about why this kind of covert operation should be banned or at least publicly scrutinised. You will have to do a freedom of information request for more data.

To deal with any mess that arises from people living outside the public systems, the council should provide bins and encourage them to be as tidy as possible. I am sure people who own property in the Clifton area pay huge council tax bills so the council should keep it clean. That's a disgrace. The Council need to provide proper camp sites and amenities for these people. They should not be left there with rubbish piling up.

Bristol City Council has been run by the Labour Party for decades What are the local council doing to put these people into low cost housing ?

Relatives were evacuated during WW2 from Southend(thought high risk) to Bristol for safety! They worked in the Bristol Aircraft factory. Then lost their house in the Bristol Blitz!
Keep up the great vids mate

Oh well, I suppose it was inevitable you'd have to go back to the squalor eventually Joe!
It needs to be seen though, otherwise people wouldn't believe it.
Well done for staying overnight mate, but you should try it for a few weeks next time!.
Keep up the good work mate. Show the UK how it really is.

What a shame! Bristol local government must fix this problem! I can’t blame these people because they can’t afford the sky rocketing prices of renting homes!!!!!

I'd be interested to know if all cities and towns have a similar setup. Life long alternative dweller. I refuse to live in any house. This is so encouraging.

I was living there during covid in my campervan, along with a few others, great vibe and all was kept clean, never had a problem. Wouldn't stop there now.
