- Ya'll have been waiting for this one, I have finally gotten around to creating a full comparison between the Surface Laptop 3 (13") and the 2019 MacBook Pro 13" in regard to design/build quality, speaker quality, keyboard, display quality, battery life and overall performance in order to help you decide which one is right for you!
I have owned the Surface Laptop 3 for a little over a week now, and so far I have absolutely loved the experience. I had transitioned to the device from a Surface Pro 6. What I learned from owning that device, is how much I prefer Windows over Mac OS. By no means, am I saying that Windows is better than Mac OS or vice versa. In my opinion, the answer to that question depends on the persons needs. For me, Windows just works better for me for work. I work a field sales manager and Windows just works better for my workflow. I used Mac OS for my entire Grad program, and it worked well. However for my personal needs, I just wasn't finding apps I enjoyed using, they were either to complex and more than I needed or they weren't compatible with Mac OS.
The other thing that I did not like, is that in order to be part of the Apple ecosystem, you have to own more than just an iPhone to be part of that system. If you want to be part of the Google ecosystem, all you need is an android device, doesn't matter which one, and a PC. PC's are much cheaper than MacOS systems and you generally get more bang for your buck, however it generally takes more bang for your buck for it to work the way you need it to.
So for work, I use the Surface Laptop 3, and for my personal use I use the iPad Pro 12.9 2018 256GB option. The reason is because iPadOS is just more fun to use than MacOS, it has more apps that I use, which is primarily photo editing. So far this setup has worked the best for me and it gives me the best of both worlds.

Nice job, Noah! I like that you are one of the few that actually compare the base model and not just the most expensive versions. I personally would upgrade the RAM to 16 GB and storage to 512 GB, but I know a lot of people (like my parents) just go for the base models to save money. Keep it up!

I got the Surface Laptop 3 with 256gb in Rose Gold two months ago and can totally recommend that one. No fingerprints can be seen on it unlike on the black version.
Also it's easy to take with me and the battery life is good.
In my opinion it has the best available keyboard on a laptop. Feels so good to type on it that I can't wait to write more essays and stuff for university.
The MacBook has a touch bad, the surface has a touchscreen.
The screen is not laminated on the Surface Laptop and is extremely reflective. The colours are also a little muted in comparison to the MacBook. The keyboard is excellent though on the Surface.

It may be individual, but when you get to use laminated displays, you can never go back.

Speaker and trackpad better on macbook + thunderbolt 3 while surface ran windows and have better processors for cheaper price...after all, i gonna buy xps 13 =))

Great Vid! I've got the Surface Laptop 3.. upgraded from the 1st gen surface laptop. Reasons why I stuck with it was the 3:2 aspect ratio, usb c charging where I can use most of my usb chargers laying around to charge and when traveling use the same charger for my phone and laptop, also the IrisPro graphics is great.. I play Dragon Quest 11 and Skyrim/Fallout games, also my battery life is pretty good typically 8'ish hours of casual use(excel/Quickbooks/webstuff). I bought the i5/8gb/128gb model and yeah I know 128gb of storage sucks but BestBuy had it on sale most of last month for $699.. I'll deal with the annoyance of managing data for that price.
I picked up the surface laptop 3 new last week for quite a huge discount. I am an imac user but needed something portable as need to work on the go more often nowadays.
Very satisfied, the thing that i was not expecting to impress me so much was windows hello unlocking, which is very fast and convenient. I'm a science student at university and i do read quite a lot of papers and make reports, and the 3:2 display makes that quite a bit easier than most windows laptops but even the macbook pro display would do the job. Also, very minor thing but i found that the alcantara on the keyboard side of the laptop makes typing more comfortable as your hands don't get cold on the metal surfaces.
Me too! Tho i got the non alcantara and totally regret it. I can feel like “light electric-y” feeling.

Is it good for high end video and picture editing?
I find the lack of USB A to be a serious issue people don't discuss much. I bought a small adapter but it made the USB stick really long and awful when I'm on a bed. So, you have to use a dongle and it takes time to plug it in then plug in your usb A. And sometimes it doesn't read properly. Then there are various USB A devices. By comparison, I rarely need thunderbolt. I had both the Surface 3 and Macbook for a while.
What do you use USB A for? Just interested as I haven't used it for years. My printer is wireless, I have a bluetooth mouse. My photos are in the cloud as soon as I take them on my phone. My scanner is wireless. My display is Thunderbolt and my external drive is USB-C. Most of us have moved with the times and happy to do so. Not sure I would ever want to go back to the old times. No Thunderbolt is cheap by MS, on a laptop that is priced premium, it is a poor show. In a year or so eGPU will be much cheaper and losing that option makes the Surface Laptop 3 a bad buy and hard to recommend especially with what is coming out in the next few months.
@sleepy at dawn I have a USB-C Samsung 512gb SSD external drive that cost around £159 and I would never go back to USB-A. I can literally run a portable OS off it, and I do on my iMac (internal HDD broke).
@@andyH_England I bought the MacBook for my wife. She has work docs she keeps on a thumb drive. She also sometimes like to plug in a mouse. We were on vacation and I needed to update her phone using iTunes on her MacBook. I plugged in the dongle to connect using her old lighting to USB A but that failed. The error message advised me not to use a HUB. So I had to buy a USBC to lightning cord (More $ for Apple).
Lots of things use USB A. It's convenient to have.
@@GizmoMaltese Yes, you have to invest to move forward towards the all-USB-C world. If we all moaned and groaned because tech needs to change then nothing would happen. For years I have accepted that we need to adopt ASAP and that will lead to quicker further improvements. Unfortunately, some people prefer to let others take the first steps rather than being a leader but thankfully Apple, Google and others push ahead despite the usual suspects that want slower adoption. Once you have bought the new connections they will last for years as we enter the all USB-C nirvana.
@@andyH_England And Apple is right there to sell you all the stuff you need to "invest" in. Until USB A is obsolete, I would like to have a USB A port for convenience. My wife also had an external ssd with UBS A. YMMV.

Surface pro because mac book is notorious for quality control issue in last several years especially for their butterfly keyboard mechanism and T2 chip issues

You couldn't be anymore accurate in your claim of a 4-5 hour battery life from the Surface Laptop 3.
I've just recently purchased a Surface Laptop 3; however, I am afraid that I will be returning the device, as it has such a short battery life.
It is 2020, no one should have to experience these issues with brand new computers.
I was thinking of purchasing a MacBook Pro; however, I am slightly hesitant to, as I am afraid that some of the programs that I run may not be compatible with the Apple Macintosh operating system, and I most certainly do not want to use Parallel for Windows, as I have heard that it can strain the memory.

Not Applicable the xps is the best windows notebook period. It’s been years and they hold that status even further with the 2020 model
Just know that dell laptops has battery issues after warranty expires. I had 3 of dell in past. After one yr, I could notice drop in battery. MacBook Pro holds quite well even after 5 yr
That claim is really strange. Elsewhere I have heard about 7h or even 9:48 hours. I wonder if that is because of the brightness, or does it really make that much of a difference if you are using Edge or another browser?

For me, it was the latter.
The laptop itself delivered only 3.5 hours of battery life with having just one tab open on Google Chrome.
Before you suggest that I should have used a different web browser, I ought to mention that I should not have to alter my preferences simply to avoid any issues that may potentially arise in the computer; I should be able to run whatever web browser I so please.
I was going to get the MacBook Pro 2019 however I chose the surface pro 7 because Of the MacBook Pro keyboard design and potential problems, the cpu in the surface was 10th gen , the touch screen and pen support for editing on the surface pro , fast charging on the surface pro , micro sd support on the surface pro 7
I would have still bought the MacBook Pro but the keyboard problems kinda put me off big time

Hey Noah, as always great video! I just wanted to suggest that you start adding transitions or like screens with what you'll be talking about next Ex. display and then starting to talk about the display, and also benchmarks (Ex 4k video editing) would be much appreciated.
I like the 2019 macbook pro keyboard...the issue is overblown as it is not as bad as people say it is and it is easy to type on
Ryan Inkrott yea my wife has had one since 2016 and never had any problems. I like it a lot. I think most people exaggerated the typing experience and talked bad about it because that’s the cool thing to do, talk crap about Apple.
Matthew Choate I don’t think that’s it I think when you’ve paid 1200+ dollars for a ultra book and maybe 15% of people have keyboard issues with it, that’s a problem.

Thank you for a thoughtful review. I have the surface laptop 3 and don't like the battery; I like most everything else. I guess it's time to invest in a battery bank.
A good balanced video. My only complaint with the surface, that is that Microsoft decided to not put a thunderbolt port on the surface. In this price range there is no excuse to not have that functionality, just like there is no excuse the $1300 MacBook only has 128gb of storage.
And no touch screen
The only reason I got the MBP 13 2020 over the surface was because there were people complaining about a crack appearing on the screen of their Surface after a couple months of use😢

I’m getting different battery results. I used chrome with Adblock, two TH-cam tabs and one generic website tab, word/pages in the background running, the MBP13 got 6:26:00, SL3 13.5 got 7:05:00.
Great video! I have this same MacBook pro. In terms of portable battery pack I've been using the zerolemon 30,000 mah usb-c (which i love) however it only charges when you're not using the device (same as with the 12.9 iPad pro. Would you recommend a battery pack that can still charge while using the product?

The Surface laptop 3 13.5 inch with a 3:2 aspect ratio has slightly larger screen than a 16:9 14 inch laptop.
Price aside whats better? Ive been using my desktop customized computer for years now. But I haven’t had a laptop for so long. Just for personal usage, web browsing,watching videos. Apple is obviously more expensive but i would love to own one. Since i have iphones airpods ipad air.

I have the MSL 3, get about 4-6 hours of battery life as well (doing websurfing, uni work) probably about 30-40% brightness.

Nice but you forgot to mention that you can install Windows on the Mac without any problems.
On the Windows Laptop though you can not install Mac OS.
I am not sure if see this comment but if you do make sure to think about this aspect.

Good review. But now there is the MacBook Air 2020 and you can spec it to and i5, 256gb HD, 16gb of ram for approx $550 less than the surface 3

You didn't mention that the Surface 3 hd is not soldered on. It would void your warranty but you can buy a M.2 2230 SSD. Soon 1TB versions will be available.

Great review. My only suggestion is to drop the comparative percentages (like @ 3:10 where you state the SL3's keyboard is "20 to 30% better than...") that are slight logical fallacies. Each instance relies upon an indeterminate value or undefinable baseline from our viewpoint.

Remember that Microsoft control both the hardware and the software as well so optimization is not a difference maker anymore.

I bought the Surface Laptop and gave away by MacBook Pro 2018( Without Touch Bar).
I have to say, I miss two things 1. Apple Track Pad, even though Surface Laptop has an excellent trackpad but still macbook is better.
2. Battery life on Apple MacBook Pro (Non Touch Bar) is better even after 2 years of use.
I love windows 10 now, they have come too close to Max Os. It’s simple easy to use and has more features,
Surface laptop has a better keyboard hand down and has a touch screen and one extra USB A makes a lot of difference.

Features are fairly similar except for the touch screen. Pick the one with the OS you want. I've got the Surface Laptop 1. Love it except the battery is too small (only 45wh). I can't believe the surface laptop 3 still only has a 45wh battery. I bought the Surface laptop 1 knowing the battery was too small. I really like the 3:2 display on it and that was why I bought it over other laptops. Never going back to 16:9. 16:10 is ok though.

I have one with me and it's only noticeable at certain angles. I bought both because I couldn't decide and had them for a month. The Surface 3 has a more masculine feel to it. I think the USB A port is a real annoyance with the MacBook since USB A is still everywhere. I got sick of using the dongle for everything.

Surface laptop 3 has WiFi 6, MacBook Pro does not. SL3 also has a touch screen while MacBook non touch.

I definitely love that you used the base models!!!! It gives a better basic rundown of both devices' capabilities, and it gives a more fair comparison (as opposed to a lot of reviews I've seen that went all out with one device but used the base model on the other) keep up the great work !!

Thanks, Can't wit to sell my 2018 Macbook Pro i7, 16gb, 512gb laptop and get a Surface Laptop 3. Unless you are doing photo editing.... My Macbook Pro is dog slow and chokes when you are doing real office work and multi-tasking. I could have saved $600 buck and got a faster PC. I put up with it for a year and finally can't stand not getting as much work done...., but it's pretty!

Nice review and a big thank you for comparing the base models! Basically every review covers the 2000€ (and more) equipped devices. I switched to this exact MacBook a year ago just because of the relatability of the whole package. I just want a device for 5 years to perform basic office tasks and windows based systems can’t provide this level of relatability...in my opinion. So thanks again for this review!

Wait for the 2020 MacBook Pro. Biggest knock for me is no thunderbolt on surface. To me get a MacBook with extra storage and run windows 10 in boot camp. Best of both worlds

XJLCA I disagree. I won’t game on my MacBook so don’t need space for that. All I need room for is school work and any old files I can just have those in the cloud or on a usb c stick. Seeing as I bought the laptop for 1180 euro I believe it to be an absolute steal seeing as here in Ireland off the Apple store it’s 1550 euro

XJLCA my wife uses her for work since 2016 with the 128GB and is maybe little over half full. It all depends on what your doing. 128 is a lot for some people it all depends
XJLCA if I had the money I’d obviously go for a bit more space but I think the whole 128gb is just Over exaggerated by youtubers who do need huge storage space for videos etc.

The design sucks. It is susceptible to getting debris caught under it and breaking which is a huge inconvenience. The typing experience is more than adequate however.
The surface book 3 looks super beautiful and modern compared to the MacBook

And it can do the same thing, you just have to put the time in to learn how to use the 2018 iPad Pro to its fullest
I would love to use only the ipad pro but I edit raw photo with Lightroom and the ipad will be good only for light task. It’s a shame that they don’t open ipados with that powerful hardware

One quick biometric note...Windows hello isn’t considered secure and it’s functionality that’s not allowed by many companies due to how it’s been hacked. Having the fingerprint sensors is still preferred for authentication.

Recently bought the surface laptop 3 over a MacBook Air. It’s amazing. Aside from the fact it randomly freezes (I have to do a force shut down to get it working again) and ALSO turns off randomly. Online Microsoft support hasn’t been helpful either.
Thankfully have warranty on it through Best Buy so gonna see whats wrong with it soon..otherwise, it’s perfect.
