Imo the Asus G14 bests both of them if you dont need a webcam. Perhaps you should give it a try
Surface Laptop 3 has two nice features which I love:
1. Touchscreen (It's also the reason for the worse display)
2. The Alcantara finish
The webcam test on all the latest MacBook Air and Pro videos I have seen, the sound seems a bit muffled or is it me? On this one the surface Pro sounded a lot richer... would need maybe more of an office like environment, because maybe the MacBooks are going intense on noise cancelling algorithms by default.

That's a good point. But if you're buying a MacBook, you will probably also have an iPad, which is the gold standard of touch screens and styluses.

Though touchscreen is a nice feature, if I'm choosing between an awesome trackpad and a touchscreen on any laptop, I will go for the trackpad every time. MacOS and Windows are just not designed for touch, just look at how small those icons are. What bug me the most are the poor ergonomics when reaching in mid air and how dirty the screen gets after a quick use. So unless these systems are well-optimized for touch or they figure out a way to improve ergonomics, I can only see myself using touchscreen because it looks "cool" at first and forget about it two days after.

Mentioning the useless touchbar but not the touch display of the Surface Laptop with pen support that, while unable to comfortably write, is still useful for quick sketches, signing documents, etc...
The difference in speaker quality is negligible at best and you mention the upper tier MacBook Pro as having improved ones... but the reality is that you have to pay extra to get those features, whereas the SL3 you get those at the base model.
The camera is comparable on both, the Mac has better skin tones, but the mic on the Surface sounds louder a lot clearer.
I commend Apple for finally admitting defeat with the Butterfly keyboards but this greedy tactic of leaving so many features out of the entry level Pro is regrettable. You get worse speakers, worse CPU performance, worse GPU performance, worse connectivity...
You try to not be biased, but you just can't help it.
I don't quite get how they are "leaving so many features out"? If you buy a more expensive laptop you're going to get a better laptop, that's just how it works. More money = better specs.
I will admit that they should have the same speakers, but the rest is justified.
@@thebuddercweeper No it is not . These laptops are not cheap so something as basic as better thermals that the 16 inch has should be on the 13 inch as well which affects the performance a lot.

It would be great if the 13” had the same better thermals As the 16”, unfortunately it’s not always possible to put that sort of thing in a much smaller design.

Surface Laptop is the best alternative to the Macbook pro (probably even better than a Macbook if you don't care about MacOS). Still every reviewer is busy recommending XPS 13(which has terrible speakers, worst trackpad and keyboard and also worst display if you consider 1080p model).
Yesterday I went to a shop to see other things and find myself trying a Surface Laptop 3.
The first thing I was surprised was with the Trackpad....in fact the Trackpads for Windows are indeed much better now...I was doing all the multi gestures I need and in a easy way...and even knows now a way to work with the Apple Magic Trackpad with Windows 10.
The screen was not so nice like the one from the Macbook Pro (somehow reflective)...the same with the Keyboard (is good) but with the keys perhaps a little to much separated to my small hands.
But has USB -A, even if only has and USB-C that is not Thunderbolt. Also has touch screen, what I will not use much, but is nice to sign documents or to draw something, Wifi 6 (the new Macbook still only with Wifi 5), and magnetic charging connector . And has Windows Hello that allows to login only by face reading.
Also has the premium feeling of the Macbook. Also Windows 10 integrates better with my Android Phone with the Mobile Phone application..
But was surprised me most was how super-fast is opening Word, Excel or Powerpoint!!! Was a blast! In the same shop we placed side by side a new Macbook Pro 2020 10th Gen and opened with it Pages, Numbers or Keynote, and was indeed, much slower! The same with Excel, Word and Powerpoint...
My daughter and wife felt the same....And this was using the Surface with i5....
If I purchase the i7 with the smaller SSD and after changed it to a bigger SSD (yes the user can change it), in the end will cost me much less some hundred euros...
The only thing I will miss will be the super-fast (at least in my old Macbook Pro) video editing (just trim 1080p videos)...Windows 10 has the Photos application that is also fast editing those kinds of videos, but not allows for instance to remove a part from the middle of a video.
I have a MacBook Pro and I'm thinking about getting the surface laptop 3.
Have both wife has MacBook pro 13 I have the surface laptop 3 and the surface runs way cooler. I also got it for 1299.00 with the i7 and 256 storage and iris plus graphics so I also have better performance. The surface seems to be more fluid I like it and cannot see going back to apple after this surface.
I tested the Surface 3 at the IT store. I like the solid build quality and the keyboard. But, mannnn....I couldn't stand the reflection. The lights in the store was bright and I could see myself clearly on the screen. Pity. With great specs and quite an affordable price, the Surface could be "the one." But that high reflective screen ruins it.
not a realistic scenario in every day life... I have a Surface Book for 3 and a half years and I took it with me to 4 different countries and several different work environments (form small shops, to Oil Refineries) and while the glass screen is reflective, the Surface Book at least has a good enough brightness output (around 450 nits) which is more than the Surface Laptop, but still... the normal use for these machines is inside an office or at home 95% of the time.
You think MacBook has low reflectivity screen, but guess what, 6 months into ownership, there will be permanent keyboard marks on that screen because the anti-reflection coating is soft and is corroded. I took mine to the apple store and the staff told me I got the mark because I was "putting it in my backpack" which "puts pressure on the laptop". They don't consider it a defect and won't fix it.

These marks don't come off when you wipe it with alcohol or anything I tried. All my classmates' slight older macbooks have them too so it's not like an isolated incident either. Now i put screen protector on all my macbooks. Makes them as reflective as surface.
bro i considered if im gonna buy surface laptop 3 after hearing max tech talking about its reflectiveness, but eventually i´ve decided to buy it and guess what... never noticed any obvious reflections while using it, to be honest he is just exaggerating and the screen is perfectly fine..
@@cat-.- I don't know where you got that. I own both 15 inch MacBook Pro and iPad Pro and I'm able to easily wipe out the keyboard marks on these screens. Secondly, I'm not sure where you got your screen protector but it seems weird to me that yours is a reflective one. Screen protector feels rough in the hand because it's more textured than a laptop screen. Thus when light hits on it, it will spread to different angles and lower the reflectivity.
As an Apple user I the Surface Laptop 3 is the clear winner here.

@@yootantonystark2738 Preference. Mac isn’t as much of a ‘ripoff’ as you think. No other laptop has a stiffer aluminum chassis than a Macbook. No other laptop has a better speaker than a Macbook. The feel of uniformity you get from the keycaps when you lay your hands down on a Macbook keyboard takes time and is a quality control challenge, which Macbooks nail (not talking about the old butterfly keyboard). Macs also have the best IPS displays, the only missing thing being high refresh rate for obvious reasons.

There is no significant difference between surface and mac's keyboard quality and feel. You can't possible expect to use these tiny differences in specs to say mac isn't a rip off or a lot better than the surface which is almost half its price WITH A TOUCH SCREEN. The only real good thing about mac is its operating system being better than windows but that's also because windows is universal. Its funny watching you guys try to defend mac XD
Mac is known to milk its consumer fanbase. It would cost them less than 30% of the listed price to make their macbooks. There is a reason why Mac is a trillion $ company... because cows exist lol.
I’m looking forward to your Dell XPS 15 review. I’m interested in how the 86w battery impacts the usage, especially for content creators. I know the XPS 17 doesn’t come out until this summer, but it looks amazing. I can’t wait to see how it performs against the 16” MacBook Pro.

@@yootantonystark2738 Yea i used to be a Microsoft fanboy but i switched over to apple because all of the apple products i had. With that being said i hated the touchscreen. it was pointless. The screen was flimsy so when you would touch the screen it would bounce and it also came with a lot of marks on the screen. It would've been nice if you were able to flip it around like the Lenovo yoga then it would be nice.

I'd pick the touchscreen over the touchbar every time. I don't even use my trackpad when I have a touchscreen. If I'm doing serious work, I'd be using a mouse too.

@@lisyibetsilva8209 Oh yes it did. I put an anti-glare screen protector and it works so well, never looked back!
But without the anti-glare screen protector, then it is impossible to use. It's like looking into a mirror. Headaches all the time. I honestly couldn't believe how reflective it was.

@@ashleyJ9795 the touch screen is actually better with the anti-glare protector on in my opinion. Without it, the screen is slippery. With the protector, a little more pressure is needed but you get used to it and I think the touch screen is far better this way. like, i would literally just put the protector on to make the touch screen feel better. that's how much better it is lol.
if your thinking of buying the surface laptop, my biggest complain is the audio/video delay. TH-cam, Spotify, and ZOOM all have audio/video delays and it drives me crazy. I looked at Microsoft forums and THOUSANDS of people have the same issue. It only happens on TH-cam when your like 10 min in a video, and sometimes it doesn't happen. But the Zoom audio/video delay happens every single time for me and its driving me crazy cause i literally have meetings on zoom for my job

The Macbook's display is much better but it doesn't mean that the Surface's screen is completely trash. The Macbook's speakers are far better but the Surface's speakers are decent. MacOS is far more optimized but you can still work with Windows 10. Overall, if you need a basic laptop, go for the surface. If you really need something more powerful, choose the Mac anyday.

In India base variant of surface laptop 3 starts from 1300$ and macbook pro 2020 base variant at 1500$ . Can anyone recommend me which can be a more decent choice.
Hi guys considering both products can you help me out; 1) I download a lot I.e torrent etc so does the write speed matter here? Would my downloads take longer? Or copy files from my laptop to hard drive? 2) Battery - I use apps for work like Citrix Workspace which consumes a lot of battery overtime - which is best for battery? 3) Fan noise - my current MacBook barely ever has the fan on or I never hear it - as a youngster use to hate Windows went the fans went on - will the surface laptop be the same? 4) Browse and watch loads of movies etc - is surface capable of handling multiple tabs and apps running without issues and fan coming on loud or noticeable? My younger brother has a Honor AMD Ryzen 5 which is very good but have heard the fan noise a few times already . 5) startup time - are they both fast - I know my current MacBook is quick even if it’s 5 years old - will the surface laptop survive and be as fast 5 years down the line? I code in terminal too but happy to use Powershell..but need some feedback on the above.

Hi Max, hope all is well. I disagree with the fact that the performance of the base model Surface is considerably higher than the base model MBP. The numbers show a slight difference which people won’t notice in real scenarios. So I consider this a tie. It all comes to what OS do you prefer. Actually you can run Windows on the MBP smoothly 🤷🏻♂️ Any thoughts? Cheers.
I really want to get the SL3, but the thing that is setting be back is the SSD form factor. Max here said that it is easy to replace on your own, but I've noticed that not a lot of M.2 2230 (the type that the surface uses) are on the market. When they are, they are more expensive and are in lower capacities. I live in Canada, so I'm not sure what the situation is for others. Opting for the higher end surface models would push the prices near the MBP's 10th gen version.

Have you put any of these Apple machines up against the Asus Zenbook Pro Duo?
Curious to see how these two compare when you use the Macbook Pro M1 chip in 2021. As far as I can tell, the Surface sounds practically as good as the high end Mac. I would actually prefer to deeper key travel while traveling. The rest comes down to the OS ecosystems as to which one would prefer.
The Surface with 16GB of RAM costs at least 1.500$ compared to 1.400$ for the Mac.

@@David-fm9wr Apparently you have never owned a Surface. I just sold my original , have my SB 2 at my office, and am typing this on the 3. Never had one fail. But we can all but anecdotal evidence out of our butts when we want....
I also ended up choosing the Surface Laptop 3 13.5" matte black but I'm having trouble finding a sleeve that fits perfectly. I tried the Incase Flight Nylon sleeve but the zipper damages the laptop. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Excellent comparison! I was trying to choose between these for a long time. I love the microsuede keyboard option on the Surface Laptop 3, but it wouldn’t be powerful enough for me. Max i'm an android user but i like Macs and want to get a Pro however i don't know how the experience will be using a Mac with an Android, i'm planning to switch to the Iphone 12 but for the time being i'll stick with my Galaxy S9+, do you have any suggestion or tips on how to make both devices work together?, i don't care about continuity and also don't care about getting text messages on my laptop, i do care about the Chrome browser but i'm almost sure is available for Macs.

Well I guess it's comparable but I think of the Surface Laptop line more of an in-between the MacBook Air and Pro... While the Surface Book is more of a MacBook Pro + (read that + iPad) competitor
That's the same space that the 2-tb3 MacBook Pro resides, using a 15w CPU lying in between the Air (9w) and the 4-tb4 MacBook Pro (28w).

look at the blacks produced in the retina screen, they seem so close to that of an oled panel!
I have the surface laptop 3 with the i7 and my gf owns the base MacBook. Both laptops are good, it’s just by preference I suppose. The surface pros for me would be better louder speakers and the treble is way better, the camera in my opinion is wall a bit clearer, and it is faster by a bit. I’m going to change the ssd soon so I can play some games when I’m on the go. The surface cons for me: you need a protective case because it collects the oil on your fingers fast, and the fans are a bit loud for a tiny machine.
Any recommendations for which kind I should for editing purposes such as Adobe products? I have a HP laptop that I’ve used since 2016 and I’m ready to upgrade
Thanks for this review. I really wanted to upgrade my MBP for a 2020, but unfortunately being in the construction industry there isn't much software support for Macs, and that's why I need a surface 3. :/ Damn it

I feel like no one wants to see the obvious, I used to be a windows fan in other types of laptops. But the issues is the durability, I used my Macbook pro 2015 for 4 years and it was still very good and i still sold out at a good amount, and upgrade. Other non apple laptops alway gives you problems within a year, battery, screen and issues. And reselling it you wont get good returns. If you want a laptop to last you for at least 5 years without issues. Invest in an apple product😘

It lowers volume because of windows 10 tricks, have it on my Hp 360, hate this feature so much. Why dont just make consistent sound all around? Also that adaptive autobrightness (makes whites brighter and blacks almost invisible) that you cant turn off is annoying af.
Honestly, would've choose Android instead of W10 any day of the week if i had a chance, because it is just works and not trying to bogger you with many annoynces in the system.

it depends on your profession and the software related to it... you need to give more information to receive an educated opinion. Both devices are quite good, and similar in quality, but it is a personal preference when it comes to software use and Operating Systems...
I am more of a Windows person and I have been using a Surface Book for the past 3.5 years... my wife has a Surface Laptop 2 and she is extremely happy with it. Her professional software uses are GIMP (or Photoshop), Office Suite (mostly Excel, Word), PDF editors and file management through file explorer and dropbox, as well as google suit of products.
On the entertainment end, she enjoys Netflix and Spotify on the laptop, which sounds a lot louder than my Surface Book when doing those tasks away from a TV or external speakers.
As for me, the Surface Book is more suited to image/video editing, illustration, 3D model creation, rendering and even gaming (though on my older device that's limited to older titles as well). The ability to detach the display is useful for drawing, sketching, taking hand written notes, comfortably watch youtube, netflix and reading articles in portrait orientation.
