@@trollface6553 Once you learn the rhythm of Mr. Sandman, it's really not that hard (in my opinion). Quick-dodge all of his starting attacks and punch him once in return each time. After that phase is over, do some jabs - high punches, he'll dodge every time and counter-attack. Dodge and hit him in the face, wait for a second, and then punch him in the stomach. It'll do MORE damage than punching him twice, you'll know you did it right because it makes a special noise different from normal. When you run out of hearts, wait patiently for him to throw a move, dodge it, punch him, and repeat the process all over again. I personally find it difficult to dodge his left-side punch (left as in, from OUR perspective, Mac's left, our left) because we've never seen it before on any other fighter. When he does his Dreamland Express, you can tell he is going to do it because he'll start blocking all of your punches rather than dodging. When he's about to do it, he'll completely stop moving for a second, which gives you enough time to notice and react to it - even to someone like me who thinks of himself as being slower than average.
Would like to clarify that this run is timed in real time, as opposed to speedrunners who use in-game time. Converted to in-game time, this run comes out to 12:55.12, while the current world record is 14:55.00.
Mike Tyson is like the most humble celebrity ever to appear in a game. The funny animations, the congratulations and the wink at the end for beating him. You really don't see things like that anymore.

I saw speedruns of the 2009 Punch-Out, and I am surprised to see how many of the original attacks they were able to translate perfectly in the 2009 game.
Not just enemy attacks. They've also translated some obscure speedrun mechanics like delayed punches getting you stars. You can tell the people who made that game were huge fans of the original.

I'm 42 and got this game for my birthday back in '87 when I was 7 or 8 from my uncle. Still have it to this day. Beat tyson when I was like 9 or 10. Had the code and kids at school would show at my house and power through sandman and macho with not a scratch on me. Recently busted it out and can't even through tiger. Punched in tyson code and can't get out of first round!😅

Little Mac knocks out his opponent. Just think of the riots. All because you did not go at least 2 rounds. Should have listened to the betting brokers.

tyson takes a knockout on his 6th knockdown given the correct conditions / good luck, regardless of how you beat the other fighters. some of them, such as bull 1, can’t be knocked out at all and only tko’d

I'd like to see a run where every opponent gets knocked down and _doesn't_ get back up. But, that might be boring, depending on the game logic. I mean, this wasn't programmed like _Super Punch-Out!!_ where that's easy to do with practice.
There are some fights where a 10-count KO involves going into Round 2 or 3 because it takes more than three knockdowns to satisfy the requirements. Von Kaiser, for example, can take a 10-count KO if you knock him down for the third time with a star punch, but you'll just get a TKO if you knock him down three times in Round 1.
When I was a kid I had this game, except Mike Tyson was removed and replaced with a generic heavyweight champion named Mr Dream. And there was no newspaper clip like at 16:20. It did have the 1987 copyright date. Maybe it was only for certain markets at the time?
You must've had the re-release then. Only the older copies of the game had Tyson, and as far as I know Mr dream is functionally identical (but nowhere near as cool).
If I recall correctly, the deal for Nintendo to use Mike Tyson's likeness just ran out, so Nintendo replaced him with Mr. Dream so they wouldn't have to renew it.

I was shitting until I read "tool-assisted." So you had the help of algorithms or AI software or something to perfect every opponent? I can't even believe every match is legit with that. I've never seen Hippo open his maw three times in a row. Whatever is going on, it's entertaining. This was my favorite game growing up and broke a controller beating it from chucking it across the room repeatedly.
The TAS itself is just an input log for an emulator to play back, kinda like a player piano. The gist of what a TAS is, is "imagine you're making a segmented speedrun, but you can start a new segment literally any time you want, reload any segment at any time, look at at the RAM of the console you're "playing" and make the randomness work for you," and so on.
I've beaten every boxer in the SNES/NES and Wii Punch Out series EXCEPT Mike Tyson! Before I kick the bucket, it is my dream to beat Mike Tyson in Punch Out.
i remember my brother being deadly with this game back in the early 90s before the internet. I bet he was up there with the speed runners and we were just kids. that guys name was really piston honda? lol.
RTA strategies are always the starting point. Sometimes TAS authors find new stuff which they then try to make RTA viable, but more often their job is to push existing strategies to their absolute limit, beyond that of human skill and reaction. TAS authors even played a role in proving that Todd Rogers was a fraud.
If Mac is not at full health, Don's random refills have a chance to be lower. Specifically, it gives a 1/8 chance for a 64 refill after knockdown 1, and also a 1/8 chance for a 40 refill after knockdown 2.
the bull charge isn’t skipped in this run, bull is just tko’d before the first bull charge in both cases. with that said, it is possible to skip a bull charge by knocking him down right before the timed trigger
when you get knocked down by him, he always uses the uppercuts ("dreamland express") immediately after; this is the fastest way to knock him down, so it's best to do this. you'll see the player intentionally take damage early in the fight, and start with half health by holding select (you'll see this in real-time speedruns too!)
Putnam this doesn’t apply all the time, it’s only like that before 2:00. That’s why the TAS is knocked down at 1:59, to give Sandman as much damage as possible before taking him down with the counter.

KOs are determined by either certain conditions or RNG, so ye thats just a legend

Is there a reason you hit Soad Popinski once in the gut after acquiring the star? Why not just immediately go to uppercut? I have to trust that the TAS knows what its doing, but I'm just wondering why.

Sure Glass Joe technically lasted longer than most other opponents. But unlike other opponents Glass Joe didn't get back up.
I was shitting until I read "tool-assisted." So you had the help of algorithms or AI software or something to perfect every opponent? I can't even believe every match is legit with that. I've never seen Hippo open his maw three times in a row.

This was my favorite game growing up and broke a controller beating it from chucking it across the room repeatedly.
The TAS itself is just an input log for an emulator to play back, kinda like a player piano.
The gist of what a TAS is, is "imagine you're making a segmented speedrun, but you can start a new segment literally any time you want, reload any segment at any time, look at at the RAM of the console you're "playing" and make the randomness work for you," and so on.

I find it funny that buffers used by actual players are getting put into the TAS.
RTA strategies are always the starting point. Sometimes TAS authors find new stuff which they then try to make RTA viable, but more often their job is to push existing strategies to their absolute limit, beyond that of human skill and reaction. TAS authors even played a role in proving that Todd Rogers was a fraud.

Hold Select before starting the match drains half of your health.
If Mac is not at full health, Don's random refills have a chance to be lower. Specifically, it gives a 1/8 chance for a 64 refill after knockdown 1, and also a 1/8 chance for a 40 refill after knockdown 2.

I was unaware you could skip the bull charge
the bull charge isn’t skipped in this run, bull is just tko’d before the first bull charge in both cases. with that said, it is possible to skip a bull charge by knocking him down right before the timed trigger
What was the point of getting knocked down by Mr. Sandman?
when you get knocked down by him, he always uses the uppercuts ("dreamland express") immediately after; this is the fastest way to knock him down, so it's best to do this. you'll see the player intentionally take damage early in the fight, and start with half health by holding select (you'll see this in real-time speedruns too!)
Putnam this doesn’t apply all the time, it’s only like that before 2:00. That’s why the TAS is knocked down at 1:59, to give Sandman as much damage as possible before taking him down with the counter.

yeah, it lets him do his dreamland express faster which gives you a bunch of hits if you successfully dodge it
