What is The Feed with Dr. G?
“Science provides the knowledge we need to improve our health - but it’s also science’s job to make sure that knowledge is accessible to everyone.” - Dr. Samir Gupta
Nothing matters more than our health. And science is the key to understanding and maximizing our health and wellness. Yet new studies are reported in the news every day, and it seems impossible to keep up and figure out what’s important. At the same time, science is too often presented in a traditional style that’s unnecessarily complex and hard to understand.
As both a doctor and a scientist, my mission is to find fresh approaches to make science clear, transparent, and easy to understand (=obvious!) - for everyone. In our digital world, The Feed is built to keep people engaged and informed around the latest topics and newest science in health and medicine, and to empower them to separate fact from fiction.

I just threw the damn tobacco, cigarette filters, lighters, cigarette making machine, ashtrays and everything else in the garbage. For months I have been wanting to quit. For months I have been living in fear. But every time I find an excuse to postpone the ordeal because I'm employed and enrolled in part-time studies, and there is always exams, there is always something!
Well, today, I have decided it's enough, and I threw everything in the garbage. The hardest part of smoking is living in fear every day. Every time you feel a sudden, protruding pain in your lungs, or caugh, or start wheezing when your body relaxes...you fear it's COPD, or asthma, or the worst of all - lung cancer.
I am 38 years old, and have been smoking for two decades. I tried to quit several years ago - I had terrible physical and psychological symptoms, I couldn't sleep, I couldn't eat, I got nauseous all the time, I got migraines even though I never have headaches ... it was terrible. On 21st day - I had to light a cigarette just to get well and be able to function again!
I don't want my story to scare or discourage anyone. I am probably very specific case when it comes to these nicotine withdravals, or perhaps I had reactions to nicotine paches, who would know...
But this time, I am entering the battle again, and I swear God this time I'm going to win. I am crying so much right now. I threw everything in the garbage because I felt a sharp, sudden pain in the middle of my chest - again! I am so tired of smoking, and so tired of living in fear every day. This has to stop, no matter the cost.
And to be honest people, I think this sh*t should be illegal. It' poisonous, it's highly addictive, and populations need to be slowly weaned off of it. Cigarettes kill 1 in 4 people, Covid-19 virus kills far, far less, yet we had such harsh measures. We need the same kind of determination to eradicate smoking. I just don't want any ignorant, 17 year old girl like me to light a first cigarette in highschool and get hooked on this poison for the rest of her life.

It is unfortunate these things are so easily accessible and it gets to people who don't really want to be using this stuff long term. I pray that you are able to get over this addiction It's always worth it to quit to give your lungs time to heal and to get rid of that pain. I think I've heard it good to replace that activity with something else. Think of something you always wanted perhaps, and spend time working towards that when that feeling is attacking you.
"4 hours after a cigarette - Your body is signaling that it’s time for a cigarette. Nicotine in your system has dropped by 90 % and you will start filling fidgety. This is when the craving starts. Instead of yielding to temptation, try focusing on something else - clean the house, iron all your shirts, or go out for a jog. The craving for nicotine will pass but you will have to steel yourselves for when it starts again.
10 hours after a cigarette - You already have a number of craving episodes behind you but it’s time to get ready for bed. Some people will start experiencing unusual hunger at this point - this is because your blood sugar levels are lower than usual and it’s common to experience hunger in this period. You might also start feeling a tingling sensation in your hands and feet - circulation is returning to normal and it’s nothing to be alarmed by. Drink plenty of water, tuck yourself in and prepare to ride it out. Most smokers cave at this point - it’s easier to smoke a cigarette than to face a sleepless night. It’s essential that you buckle up - after this hurdle, every other night without a cigarette will be easier.
24 hours after a cigarette - This will be a tough awakening. Depending on your smoking habits you might get an urge to light a cigarette as soon as you open your eyes. Fight it. Have something to eat and drink plenty of fluids - avoid coffee, tea, or any other beverage that might serve as a trigger. It’s also important to give yourself some time to process everything. You will likely be irritable and anxious - this is because your body is running on 0 nicotine at this point. Try to start a new routine. Jog, knit, write, or do anything else that is easy to do once you get an urge to light a cigarette.
48 hours after a cigarette - One day left and the worst is over. At this point, you might start experiencing depression or anxiety - all normal as you brain chemistry starts to get accustomed to the lack of nicotine. Headaches might be a slight issue but these should go away in the next 24 hours. Cravings are still constant and someone who was an average smoker will experience at least 4-6 episodes per day. Remind yourself of why you’re doing this and have your alternative on standby if the cravings get too difficult to manage (wear your running gear to work, have a notebook ready, and keep that ball of yarn and your needles close).
72 hours after a cigarette - Cravings are subsiding considerably and their duration time should not exceed five minutes for every episode. Entertain your mind during those 5 minutes and occupy yourself with something other than thinking about a cigarette and cravings will subside. Some people, especially heavy smokers, might experience a sore throat and excessive coughing. This is because your body is ridding itself of tar coating and growing new tissue. This is often accompanied by tightness in the chest that is caused by coughing.
7 - 21 days - Occasional cravings for nicotine still strike every day but they are manageable for the most part. It’s important to recognize them for what they are and to remind yourselves that lighting a cigarette would not only make matters worse, it would set you back considerably - back square one, to be exact. Most people notice that their appetite is increased but their levels of energy seem to be lower. If it happens to you it’s because your metabolism is beginning to normalize and your blood sugar levels are dropping. Both flatulence and constipation might occur because intestinal movements are also slowing down.
More than 70% of smokers who decide to quit will experience nicotine cravings and increased appetite. These symptoms of nicotine withdrawal are the most persistent ones and can last for more than 4 weeks.
Around 60% of people will suffer from anxiety, depression, poor concentration, or irritability - these mental symptoms can last up to 4 weeks but will gradually subside. If they persist, we advise you to talk to your doctor about them." -Quit Smoking Timeline (website: tobaccofreelife (org))
To me this sounds like pretty good advice for all addicitons. Pray you are still on your journey to freedom from smoking! That Quash app looks quite useful too!

Thx for the way you explained, I quit smoking 6 months ago with help of the gum and since then quit the gum. I am 51 years old and have smoked since i was 14 years old. I love the form that you used to explain. When i quit smoking the doctors made it a point to scare the hell out of me instead of being logical. It does not matter how you quit, cold turkey, the patch, the gum. Chantix. or anything else. Do it on your own terms because if you don't the chances of returning to smoking are great. I had to realize and admit to myself that I was a drug addict. When i finally admitted that, the cigarettes left shortly after. The hardest part for me is that I’m a stay at home mom and homesteader. I have a ton of tasks to do everyday that require a lot of work but they’re all mindless at this point. Dishes, laundry, taking care of the chickens, sweeping, mopping, tidying up, taking care of my son, cooking, prepping meals, etc… all of these tasks are so mindless for me after doing them for three years that I don’t have anything challenging my mind. That’s been the hardest part for me to quit. When I’m hanging out with other people or super busy outside of the house or I’m in deep conversations, I don’t touch my vape. I'm looked this video up, not because I'm a smoker, but because of all the Canadian wildfire smoke, hammering many cities in North America and even Europe! It's kinda like we are all smokers now. I've been measuring air quality more frequently because I was concerned about smog levels and then I realized we've always been inhaling some bad form of air at any given point in history. Smog and smoke is very penetatrive and it is very good at spreading into low concentration areas. So if we've frequently been exposed to bad air, and even the animals as well, then I realized there must be some form of lung self-cleaning function otherwise people and animals would be falling over constantly. It appears lungs are more resilient than I initially thought. Which is good news.
I used to wake up coughing in the morning somewhat frequently, but I've taken some action by getting a purifier, sensor, dusting more often, checking outdoor air quality and those morning coughs seems to be diminishing.
So whether it's from smoking or wildfire smoke, people should take some comfort knowing that if they can bring air pollution levels back down, their lungs will be able to restore some of its capacity.

I quit smoking and I gained 140 pounds. I struggled with diets and exercise but I could not stop the weight from coming on. I went from a slim and trim 135 pounds all the way up to a massive big belly 275. Mt waist went from a 32 to a 50. I got a medical discharge from the navy for being obese and I lost my military retirement benefits. I developed severe sleep apnea and became a borderline diabetic. Had I known I was going to get fat like this, you best believe, I would have never quit smoking. You're supposed to be rewarded for to quit smoking, not punished

I'm 32, into 18 years of heavy smoking and recently a lung doctor told me I've developed COPD. Although I've been trying to quit since then (half a year now),
I couldn't help but feeling hopeless, thinking 'well, damage is done, whatever, I might as well smoke'.
NOBODY ever told me that quitting would help reducing the rate of losing lung function to NORMAL.

I smoke 2 1/2 to 3 packs a day and have been going on 13 years. I can't breathe very well anymore and eating is a chore since my nose has been broken many times and I can barely breathe through my nose when I eat Im basically holding my breath the entire time I chew. I cough up black and brown phlegm all day from dusk to dawn. I recently started exercising and have gotten down to around 2 packs a day I smoke 1 cigarette at the start of the hour then another on the half hour. I have tried to quit several times but all attempts have failed each time I quit cold turkey I make it about 2 days then cave in. Never start smoking some of us have an extremely hard time quitting. I spend $700 on cigarettes a month in the 13 years I have smoked I have spent close to a quarter million on cigarettes its insane. When I workout I get out of breath extremely quickly i keep on going but throwing up during and after your workout gets old quick. I felt fine and never had many breathing issues until about 2 years ago so to all those people that smoke like a freight train like I do and think your invincible think again. You won't be saying that when walking up and down the steps to do your laundry makes you vomit.
