      Hi, i am currently going through the biggest challange of my life. on the first of novemeber 2021 i quit smoking (30 a day), smoking weed (daily aslo), eating junkfood (atleast 1.5x per day) these habits i have had for i woulkd say atleast 6 years. On top of quiting all these things i have got back into my old habit of working out as much as i can (getting up to 5 days a week allready ) am only eating healthy, meditate, cold showers every day etc. i am doing everything i can to turn my life around in a massive way. I have many reasons for doing this challange ofcourse, but for me the main thing is my mental health and ofcourse physical health aswell. I have a question however. i am so so so curious as to what exactly is going on withing my body and my brain chemestry. is there any chance you could help me understand exactly how i am changing and healing?

      Dr. Mike, why the hell are you showing a clips of people blissfully smoking cigarettes on a video trying to encourage people to quit smoking or to stay quit.
      I thought doctors were smarter than this. It is literally giving people mixed signals and causing them to crave a cigarette with those clips. Unbelievable!

    Quit 6 months ago. Smoked 1 pk. daily for 45 yrs. Gained 30 lbs. No noticed physical improvements or changes other than my sense of smell is better. Miss it daily. Depressed more. Truthful account of my experience.

    I quit smoking almost 2 years ago after 36 years of 1 pack a day. When I smoked, nothing in this video would've moved me to quit smoking. You got to be living under a rock to not know smoking is bad for you, but deciding to quit is 100% a personal decision and all the scary stats are meaningless when one's addicted. And each time California raised the taxes on cigarettes and made them more expensive, I just got used to paying more. I started smoking when cigs were $1/pack and quit when they were almost $10/pack.
    What got me to quit smoking was turning 50 and thinking I didn't want to pull around an oxygen tank at 60. Or I didn't want to turn 60 and develop a debilitating disease that was completely preventable. I smoked my last cigarette on the night of March 31, 2019, slapped on a Nicoderm CQ patch, and have never looked back. After some time passes you completely stop thinking of cigarettes and it's one of the best feelings to have! Also since I quit, every month I put the money I would've spent smoking that month into a savings account for splurge spending. Best of luck to those who choose to quit... you can do it!

    I was a smoker for 30 years. I had a massive heart attack with 100% block to my left descending valve and survived the Widowmaker. I stopped smoking. I then had a Domino effect for the good. I lost a hundred pounds I don't stink and I don't miss out on events because I am off smoking. If I can do it you can do. Give yourself the gift of life.

      Me to. I smoked for 45 years, had a heart attack followed quickly by the widow maker. One half of my heart died and I had a heart transplant. 12years in and still going good.

      I'm turning 28 in September. Still haven't been able to quit. I'm conscious of it, but haven't been able to quit yet. I want to. Id like 10 years of not smoking. I think that would be great.

      @@jmendleson19 Going good. Once you get past the first year, it’s almost like you never smoked. I even made it through a divorce without going back. You just need to put your foot down, and don’t allow yourself any excuses to do it. No celebration or devastation is a reason to smoke.

    I quit smoking years ago. My best advice to quit is to always carry a bottle of water. If you want a cigarette, drink some water till the craving goes away. I promise this works!!! Smoking is not worth it, your life is!!

      Actually, you can do anything when you have these urges. Just don't give in and start smoking, develop a habit over the time you get these urges, anything will do.

    My dad had lung cancer and copd and he has passed. My mom had lung cancer and has end stage copd. I have tried to quit so many times over the past 5 years. It has been constant with me, but i just had an extremely emotional heart to heart with my mom and told her that i just smoked my last cigarette and that this is not only a gift to myself but it is a gift to hear as i want her to see that i have conquered this habit while she is still here with me on earth. This is it. Please say a prayer for me. This is the one gift that i need to give to my mom so that she can have peace while she is still with me and not have the constant worry that i am going to end up just as she is.

    I quit 5 months ago after 22 years of smoking cigarettes. One of the hardest things I ever did. I have less anxiety. Funny how the thing I thought was relieving my stress was causing stress.

    If you can push past day 4, you're on a good trajectory I found. After 6 weeks you generally don't think about it anymore. I got lucky I guess, my internist/respiratory specialist checked my lungs with spirometry and high res CT and found that my lungs are looking good - "I see no evidence of a pack a day, 30-year smoker here". I guess 7 years of abstinence pays off even if I really don't feel all that different for quitting (it's nice not being a pariah in public or smelling of smoke all the time, however). How did I quit? I tried with all the patches and pills and failed. The best method I found was "cold turkey" and a strong resolve to get past the first week no matter what. Chantix made me ill and dropped my blood pressure alarmingly 30 minutes after the dose. Welbutrin gave me hives. A strong will to quit was the best for me and the cheapest. You need a strong will anyway regardless of what method you go with, to be fair.

      Same strategy I applied. Cold turkey and a strong resolve not to smoke again.
      Three days were the hardest almost smoked, but a week, everything is smooth.

      Well done! I did too.
      I quit smoking about 15 years ago but relapsed having failed to break the powerful association between cigarrettes and alcohol. This time, I knew alcohol wouldn't be an issue for some time due to the quarantine measures (bars closed and no parties) so I decided to give it another go.
      After six weeks, I really felt no cravings at all.... until I had alcohol again at a barbecue. It was tough... much tougher than I expected but I told everyone on arrival that I'd quit so that no-one offered me a smoke. Also, I was half-expecting it to be a problem so I was mentally prepared and looked on getting through the evening without smoking as being a real challenge, which it was!
      The next time was a week later, at a bar with a friend who smokes (outside the bar, not inside). Still difficult but I held out (told myself I'd done it once so I could do it again).
      Finally, the third time, I actually found it much easier. My brain was starting to learn that I could enjoy a few beers, even without cigarretes.
      The fourth time took barely any effort at all.
      Now, it takes no effort whatsoever.
      Breaking associations can be difficult, I stopped smoking after meals years ago and I remember that took a little time to get accustomed to. The association with alcohol was a little more difficult but it didn't take long for my brain to learn that a having a few beers with friends (or more than a few) can be just as enjoyable without the cigs. Once you've proved that, the fight is won.
      Then, you just have to make sure you stay off them. That's no more difficult than saying "no" to an offer of food that you like - it's nothing like fighting an addiction.
      And if stress makes you want to smoke, just tell yourself that it wouldn't help anyway (it really doesn't) and that giving in to this temporary urge would mean accepting defeat and wasting all that hard work and what it's achieved. Stressful periods pass just as quickly with or without smoking - without leaves you feeling much better about yourself, not to mention, much healthier.

      Keep the idea of smoking small in your mind (don't give it huge demonic mind power). Addiction has way to much mental power when we view it like a huge dragon that chasing us and could eat us at any moment. Ask God (even if your not sure you believe) to help you view smoking as the small withered up lizard (that addiction truly is). It worked for me (over 20 years now). Also helped me a lot to make sober friends and stay present. One day that desire will be 100% gone and you will wonder why anyone would ever smoke.

    22 years heavy smoker, quit for 35 days today. very difficult. i think the key is to 'get prepared for boredom'. the first few days i felt absolute boredom, nothing to do, what to do now? , something is terribly missing, always want a cigarette, dont want to get up, and life is very meaningless.
    to be ready to live in this boredom was my biggest helper i believe. it is a war and the weapon that is fighting you and attacking you every day is 'boredom'. you need to be prepared for it, and you wont be able to destroy it, just be ready to face it every day and do not say i give up. it will keep coming every minute probably. no problem, just stand your ground.

    My best friend died of a heart attack, he was a heavy smoker...lived by himself..was found dead in his apartment by a family member....had been dead for 3 days...this is why you should quit if you smoke! Life is beautiful..live life ... don't help kill it!

      75 days. Gained some weight, that now will be trying to lose. Breathing is so much better. I do still get emotionally based cravings, but I sit through them. I "smoke" a cut paper straw. Helps me psychologically. I do not want to go back to smoking

      @@UndercoverSpill for me, smoking 1 hour or less before going to sleep gave me insomnia. And because smoking made me less efficient when exercising, that only compounded my bad sleep. When I stopped smoking, it all went back to normal. It took a month or so, but my energy and sleep got much better

    After 17 years of smoking 20+ a day, I am ripping the bandage off and finally succeeding quitting smoking. You have no idea how many times I've previously tried and failed, even just a few hours later. Or how many triggers I've had that was leading me to smoking, it was actually insane. I've never truly believed that I could do it until now. This time I have found the essential mind key. What absolute freedom, I feel so good about myself! I'm not even watching this video because I needed motivational help, I was genuinely just curious of the upcoming health benefits, as I am 5 nicotine free days into my new life 🤩 I'm really determined to be my own leader this time, not gonna let the smoke talk me back into anything else. That doesn't mean I sometimes don't think about it or miss it at all, but honestly it's less and less, and for the most part the hought leaves me as soon as it arrives. It doesn't keep my attention. The benefits of not smoking are soooo many though, and thinking of them keep me so happy and proud every day. I'm confident in continuing being smoke free moving forward as well :) How about you?

    Now do the Top Five reasons to quit being obese. I quit smoking 20 years ago, after multiple failures. To this day when I get overly stressed my brain tells me, “hey I know something that will help” and smoking come to mind. I wouldn’t go through withdrawal again for anything and that’s what keeps me smoke free. Great videos BTW. I feel like I don’t get any help understanding COVID-19 without your channel.

    I quit smoking on the first day of Ramadan 2 years ago since I wasn't going to consume anything during day - fasting anyways 😀 and then came COVID 19, which helped me to quit since I wanted my lungs to be able to absorb more oxygen in case I contract the disease. This is a very comprehensive video that touches all the aspects of smoking. Thanks Doctor.

      For me it only took one day. Once I got past that first 24-hours smoke free I knew I could do it. Take it one day at a time and you’ll eventually be where I am, grossed out by the thought of smoking. You’ll think about it a lot at first, like every time you normally took a smoke break at work, but just remember that first whole day without a cigarette and know you can do it.
      I don’t even think of it anymore. I quit one year ago today.

    When home office started I started smoking like crazy , a pack a day . I’m sitting around in my room next to my window when I’m bored I smoke . I never smoked this much ever before . So two days ago I decided to quit for good . So far so good no horrible withdrawals . I’m a long distance runner and work out regularly , I consider myself healthy but can’t really call myself healthy when I’m smoking a pack a day .

    I had my 1st cigarette @ 18 but became addicted @ 20. After many years of smoking I'm starting my journey of quitting tomorrow. Besides not wanting any health problems I have a few things I do that's motivating me to stop this bad habit. Congratulations to those who have finally quit.       i smoked my first cigarette at 12. i went into it thinking i was gonna see what my parents and certain famous people saw in these cancer sticks…
      i ended up smoking “1 more” about 3 more times, until i accepted i was an occasional smoker, then eventually became a daily smoker from 6th to 11th grade
      i’m 17, and the last cigarette i smoked was on the 24th of december, last year. if i live til 71, i may pick it up again if i decide i really liked it.

    It's my 4th or so attempt quitting. 4.5 months. My advice is please KEEP trying. I used to think smoking helped me be happier and less stressed but I realised life has some tough times wether I smoked or not made no difference if anything I stressed over when I could get my next fix and guilt at second hand smoke and my cat being beside me. My biggest hurdles are weight gain and chest, and throat infections seem to get worse for me to begin with. But I allowed myself to eat anything for the first 3 months. Now, my focus is losing weight and super healthy eating and boosting my immune system, drinking more water. I can afford good food now. I started 10 mins exercise every morning. A walk a day and a fun Zumba class. My shape is starting to get back to normal. Yay🎉.

    My husband is only 41 and has emphysema. He started smoking around 15 years old. The moment I found that out I quit smoking and so did he. I knew if I didn't quit he wouldn't either. He is doing better not on oxygen so far. I pray he never will be but he still gets short of breath sometimes. It's a really scary disease

      Me too either, but I smoke organic cigarettes. Wiki the additives they put in cigarettes: pay attention, as many of the ingredients are hazmat chemicals. I've still got copd and I'm finally in a smoking cessation group. 43 years is long enough!

      I was smoking also watching this. I been thinking of quitting for the last two weeks. I was smoking a pack every two days. Now I'm smoking a pack a day. But I can fill I really need to quit real bad. I just got to make my mind up to quit. I got the patches and gum. I need that extra help so I'm going to call that 1-800 number. I heard people say to pick I quit date. So my quit date is Oct. 1st. So with mind over matter and prayers. For the life in me I hope I can do this finely. I've tried quitting before and I was just eating way to much. My plan this time is to drink a lot of water. And read how other people quit for good. I hope I got my floor plan all figured out good this time. Thank you for the great video. I'm going to save and watch every morning. So I can put in my mind how important it is to my life to quit. The time is now, I have to follow through...

    A week ago I got an jaw infection from a wisdom teeth withdrawal, I became so ill that I didn’t even think about smoking, when I got better I hadn’t smoked for 3 days, I’ve used that as a motivation to quit and I, as of this moment, haven’t smoked for 7 days. I’ve smoked since I was 13 and I’m 23 now. I need all the motivation I can get, that’s why I’m watching this video.

      I started smoking around that age too, smoked on and off (as much as two packs a day) until my late 30’s and finally quit (with my wife) when her father died of aggressive lung cancer 16 years ago. Today I just completed a 23 mile mountain bike ride with elevation changes nearing 3,000 feet.
      Identify the stress triggers that would spur you reach for a cigarette and develop new mechanisms to respond to the triggers; work at changing the “ceremonies” around cigarettes (like having one with coffee, or a social drink); develop new hobbies that take you away from activities that you used to smoke in; and exercise, exercise, exercise!!! Exercise was the biggest deterrent for me to avoid smoking again.
      Good luck and remember, as long as you are really trying, you WILL get to a smoke free life - it may take several attempts but never give up!

    I quit smoking a little over 4 days ago. Soon I'll be able to say 5. Quit after 29 years of smoking [since 1995 aprox]. I did not become a regular smoker over night - it took me about 4 years to really go from a casual smoker to every day one.
    The hardest day for me was day #2. Now it's a bit easier. I'm more calm and am already sleeping a little better. Can't wait to get to those 2 weeks when I assume it'll become easier to handle the cravings :D
    One thing I will say. I have been in good shape for the last 22 years [give or take], I never had real lung or caugh problems. That's probably why I didn't quit earlier.

    I started smoking in my teens because of depression. It took me until my 30s to realize that no matter how much nicotine I smoke, I'm still gonna be as equally depressed but less healthy. No idea why it took me 15 years to realize that but here we are.

    Excellent video, I was a smoker and got rid of it by starting vaping and using nicotine replacements. I would love you to make a video about vaping and what kind of problems is related to it. I know there is not a lot of studies about vaping yet but from personal experience I can tell that it is the best way to quit actual smoking.

    I quit smoking 26 years ago. What helped me the most was to switch to cigarette brands I hated (pleasure removal), smoking no more than three cigarettes a day for a couple of months to help avoid a really dramatic withdrawal, and then telling my friends I had already quit when I hadn't in order to shame myself into finally quitting. For me, there was nothing worse than a Carlton or a Barclay! At a pack or more a day, I have saved a small fortune since I quit.

      Yup wean off switch brands to more natural smoke like American Spirits organic version can taste the difference amd chemical free was the claim and I can tell the difference went from 5-8 cigs a day to 3-4 a day to 2 a day and a pack would stretch almost 3-4 days went from $30 a week to $20 which is about two packs a week. I was done after my smokes hiked up $12-13 a pack of American Spirits that's overpriced and hurting me.

    Quit smoking about 6 days ago, was not really a heavy smoker I smoked like 2 joints a day and I can already feel my lungs feeling so much better especially during a workout

    I just quit smoking 7 days ago. I had a bad flu, which influenced my lungs as well. It was terrible, and I decided to quit smoking after I realized what I did to my lunges.
    This video motivated me even more to be persistant. Thank you Dr. Mike🙏

    I'm quiting smoking starting now and I'm really dedicated to do it because I have a child on the way. My wife just announced last week that we're pregnant. I haven't had flu or cold in 2 & half years. I'm not sure if it's because of smoking or my immune system. But as i said I'm quiting because my unborn child needs a father.     Adding a footnote, for those on the fence.
    I just lost my baby brother, on Sept 13th, to COPD, after a lifetime of smoking since age fourteen. He was 52yrs old.
    His desire was to die at home; we did our best to care for him, and fulfill his wish.
    It broke our hearts to lose him so young, and so quickly. We are still grieving his passing, and miss his goofy sense of humor.
    This disease, is torture for everyone. My brother's grandbabies, are devastated by his loss.

    my dad tells me that i am not a man because i don't smoke and I don't drink. he thinks having these kind of addiction makes u cool in your life. can u imagine hearing these things from ur own family? i guess I'm the only one here like that. I am 20 and I don't have any addiction. i don't even drink beer. my only addiction is listing music🙂

    I ended up becoming asthmatic due to hanging often with friends who smoked cigarettes and marijuana. Worst thing that ever happened to me. I used to workout a lot and I was a fitness instructor and now I can’t do those things because I have asthma just because I was always hanging out with friends who smoked around me. I never thought it would do damage and I ended up learning the hard way 😢

    Both of my parents died from smoking-related cancers 2 years apart at 54 and 56 years old. I was in my early 20's when they passed. Needless to say, neither myself or my sister smoke.

    I quit smoking by convincing myself that I could still smoke if I wanted to. This mindset helped me manage my cravings. I only smoked when I genuinely felt the urge, such as after meals or tasks, gradually reducing to two cigarettes daily and eventually none. Now, I might enjoy a cigar when drinking whiskey once a month or less. The key was reminding myself I could smoke but questioning the need unless there was a real craving. This approach helped me break the habit before addressing the addiction.

    Not sure if you are still on this topic but hearing more benefits really motivated me. Before I thought my risk for diseases would always be higher than a nonsmoker. hearing that one day my risk could be similar if not same as a nonsmoker one day, that really really tempted me. Just cut up my pack of cigs too. Lets see how this goes

      @CodingMindsMadrid smoking a lot less. Ironically you commented right when I had my first relapse in over a week(longest I've gone since trying to quit) but I think I know what to do for next time. I think I should just keep focusing day by day until it becomes second nature to just do other things (music, deep breathing, 10-20 push ups, etc) when I get a craving. Today I FORCED an excuse to smoke 😅

      Don't let your lizard brain trick you into thinking you really want cigarettes. It's a byproduct of all those chemicals they lace them with to keep us lifelong users. Instead of giving in, get angry. Take control of your own life and wellness. Don't give up on yourself

      @@umeinui I just quit cold turkey and it's rough, but I'm just taking many sips of water, if I must put something between my lips there's cherry tomatoes and seedless white grapes, and I just tell myself 'You didn't smoke the past 24 hours and you survived, so just do that again'. And when it's really a really fresh quitting attempt, telling yourself 'I survived not smoking the past hour, so lets just do that again. Keep pushing it. I can't wait to hit a week so I can tell myself 'you survived a week just fine, so lets just do that again'.
      13 years, 2 months and 10 days of smoking a pack a day.

    This is my one-year anniversary of quitting smoking. It’s interesting that the TH-cam algorithm pushed this video. Makes you wonder.
    I’m glad it did though. It’s always good to see why I quit in the first place. This was my fourth and last time quitting. I will never pick it up again. I guess I just needed to find the exact right time.

    I quit smoking after almost 9 years and I did not feel like smoking again and i didn't get any alternatives... It has been a week and I am feeling much much better ... More energy,... breath better..., no constant cough,.. no psychological problems like hypertension etc... No shivers in different parts of the body....
