People who weren't fans of U2 probably don't realize that this entire album and tour was an act, a reaction to all of the criticism they previously received for being what some perceived as overly earnest and sincere, that they took themselves too seriously and needed to loosen up and just be rock stars. This particular bit didn't go over well but it really was just them facetiously pretending to be what people expected from rock stars, and poking fun of themselves for acting so serious all of the time.

It wasn’t staged or a joke. They apparently apologised later. U2 saw themselves as counter culture infiltrating the mainstream (Bono’s words) - Phil Collins was some sort of enemy back then to young teenagers. U2 themselves were just in their late 20s/early 80’s. Things changed. People relaxed. Music doesn’t have the same weight socially anymore. But back then this was real. They fired similar stabs at others they saw as “entertainers” as opposed to “artists” such as Cliff Richard during an interview in 1988. Random fact, this was filmed in U2’s local pub called The Dockers. Paddy the barman was a legend and it was just next to their studio and management were they’re still based to this day.
If you’re an old U2 fan (like me), you’d know this was all an act. In an effort to break away from their reputation as “too serious”, they decided to live the rock and roll pompous lifestyle by mocking it. Brilliant. Oh, and they just happened to release their best album as well (AB).
I'm definitely an older U2 fan and nothing about this is "an act". They are being their genuine selves because at that point in time they answered to nobody. They were deservedly sitting on top of the world and owed nobody a thing for it, having gotten there without ever compromising their artistic integrity. Adam doesn't drink anymore and Bono drinks far less as does the Edge but at this time they really knew how to party and did it with class and humour.

Not to mention it doesn't add up it's "1 am in the morning" with U2. Award ceremonies usually don't start before 6pm PST in LA, that would make 2 am Irish time (8 hrs time shift). Ergo....all a hoax.

I miss this U2. Poking fun, having a laugh. It was all sarcasm, irony and outright self-mockery. U2 fans know this, the entire 90's was deliberately insincere and arose from the fact that people in the 80's quite literally expected them to solve world hunger, and U2 decided that their image was too self-important, and it was time to cut it down. In fact, Bono stated at the time that "Achtung, Baby" was the sound of four men chopping down the Joshua Tree.
Laurence Dunne We irish call it The Craic and it has been lost over the years with all the serious in entertainment....jesus the last time I saw an Irish band be themselves was The pogues in 1999. I was 4 lol watched them while on my dads shoulders in galway and met Bono a couple days after
+Laurence Dunne as much as u say that and i agree to a degree - but it;s worth remembering they stiII supported causes heavily and said poIticaI things - starting your concert with george bush sir and nazi marching drums is not Iight fare but they had so much suss and humour working with them at the time - it's aIso worth remembering they were broadcasting form sarajevo by the pop tour! :-)
@jorgem453 That is just your opinion Jorge, or your taste. For me, it's a much closer run thing. Both have great tunes to look back on. U2 were probably cooler in their day. And having seen Both acts preform live in their hayday, I think that while Phil Collins was an excellent live performer, U2 were on a different level. As for the video, U2 were a little drunk and a little rude poking fun at Phil not being all that cool. Hardly a hanging offence. Some of the tension stems from the time delay as well.
U2 have younger fans. All ‘Dad Rock’ groups do. Because great music is timeless. And….they weren’t making music hoping for gen Z’s approval back in the 90’s… Live to your mid-30’s and you’ll realize that you’re not the target market for pop culture. It’s liberating. I get to enjoy music made literally 100 years ago just as much as new stuff. Because it’s all good.
my memory from the original broadcast was adam saying"our parents have all your albums" im not sure if that was edited out or i had wrong then but i remember u2 being interviewed by phil collins as bono, edge, and adam were in a bar with a satalite feed-----please log on to equip.org
Absolutely Irish to the core. If you hang out in Ireland you will see that this is typical pub humor, a little biting, a little real, but also all in good fun. It's great to see the lads just being real and unguarded. Phil Collins is an excellent musician with a brilliant career. They can take the piss out of him but it's just lads in a pub.
Why are people so upset? U2 are only having a bit of fun with Phil. It's Phil Collins, it's not a victimless crime. I think some people are taking it a bit too seriously.
Wow you Phil Collins fans are taking this a bit seriously, possibly like the man himself? Personally, I don't have strong feelings about Collins either way but if he really took offense at this, he'd be quite pathetic. U2 get mocked on a daily basis but take it as part of the job and are always careful not to knock others. This teasing hardly counts. Finally U2 in their 40's had much more to offer than Collins in his 40's.
I've been a fan of U2's music since I was 10 but this made me angry and really sorry for Phil. Really disrespectful behavior. Even if it was a joke, it wasn't very funny.
@@paulmcgrath6118 They have actually reopened the place. The pints looked great to be fair.Grogans is a great spot and the background looks really similar
Although it was bad acting by U2 pretending to be drunk and giving an really awkward interview, I think Phil was very patient with them and remained professional. You never get interviews like this anymore, and by the way the band can’t make it so we are going live stream to the PUB. It’s like a thing of yesteryear.
@ Most on here say they weren’t drunk, and to me they don’t look drunk. The interview they gave wasn’t coherent with cringe jokes. I like their music always have done but they really are terrible here.

KLR, I thought Achtung Baby was APPALLING, terrible commercial garbage. Even One is tedious shit to me now. GARBAGE. Laughable you'd think that shit better than Joshua Tree.
U2 lost my interest after about 2005, I met Bono around 2005, the whole experience made me think how pointless it is to lionize a person, I think stardom went to his head imo, sometimes it is better not to meet those you admire, everyone has different experiences but mine changed my perspective on famous "stars"
@@declanfitzpatrick8268 There is real therapy needed for those who lionize and obsess over complete strangers like Rock Stars.. maybe you're one of them?
I'm amazed at some of the comments below - don't you realise this was staged? As for the comment about Phil Collins having more talent in his finger...really?
Yeah, that's a bummer. And phil was so respectful, even humbling himself to say something such as, "If you need an opener, I'm here!". Bono and co. were always too full of themselves. They'll never leave behind the legend that Gabriel, Collins, and co. have.
1) U2, despite their serious overtones, are very funny. Irish people are known for being especially harsh in their wit. I'm sure Collins laughed, even if everyone in the U.S. gasped. 2) That video was 1992. Not recent. 3) They are not tax evaders. They pay tons in tax - probably more than we'll ever even earn in our lifetimes. They just found a way to shelter some of their money, the same way Mitt Romney, Bill Gates, the Rolling Stones, and any other wealthy artist, politician or business person does. 4) U2 donate TONS to charity and often do charitable events at their own expense. They have donated proceeds for some of their biggest hits to charity as well. Of course, I'm sure this post will get a ton of thumbs down as it's more fun to mock U2/Bono than to actually learn the truth. It's like global warming - better to say it doesn't exist than to actually do something about it. Funny how when big oil companies lie, people lap it up. But when someone does actual good (and Bono's DATA program is working in Africa), they are called wankers.
This does not sit comfortably with me being Irish who are generally friendly and welcoming on the whole, trying to tell myself that this was a just a joke that Phil Collins was in on but seriously it does not look good, U2 may be talented and their lives shows legendary but this looks in very bad taste and somewhat embarrassing.
U2 are lightweights musically compared to the rich years of 70's Genesis and their prog classics. And personality-wise, the Genesis guys leave them in the dust. Looks like they needed lots of alcohol to stay afloat. I guess the Irish background still had them on the defensive too. Phil ends up with more respect in the end.
U2's music from that era still holds up and Zoo TV is still rated as one of greatest tours of all time. Prog rock hasn't held up, and at no point in the last 30 odd years has it been reassessed in any positive way. The Irish comment must be one of the dumbest things I've ever read. Please tell me you're not British?
The video's description states that it's "Bono and co. drunk, disrespecting a music legend" I'm confused because I see no disrespect and no music legend either. All I see is Bono and co. drunk, having a laugh with Phil Collins. Where's the disrespect & where's the music legend?
It doesn't matter to Adam Clayton if a chord is major or minor, never mind diminished or augmented. That guy only ever plays the root note. He's the most expendable bass player in history.
I prefer Phil over U2, just Phil worked with Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, and other artists, being a great drummer and percussionist in Genesis. Ah, and also a good singer who in his best moments he could have a very decent range (tenor one). Not everyone can hit some notes Phil does. You can ask Steve Hackett about Phil's talents, even after he left Genesis. About U2 they are good but for me not in the level of Collins' career

I was 4 lol watched them while on my dads shoulders in galway and met Bono a couple days after
T Buss Ah yes, I miss the Craic, grew up in Ireland but lived in America since 1994. Not as much craic here....
+Laurence Dunne if only those pissing on U2 knew read this comment. But I think the self-mockery could only go on for so long tbh.
Kyle O'Bryan I don't think that's a bad thing.
Phil Collins way better than U2
@jorgem453 That is just your opinion Jorge, or your taste. For me, it's a much closer run thing. Both have great tunes to look back on. U2 were probably cooler in their day. And having seen Both acts preform live in their hayday, I think that while Phil Collins was an excellent live performer, U2 were on a different level.
As for the video, U2 were a little drunk and a little rude poking fun at Phil not being all that cool. Hardly a hanging offence. Some of the tension stems from the time delay as well.
The Edge clearly took the edge off.
Take the beanie off mate ya balled
OUCH!
It looks like they were making fun of Phil for being Dad rock, now they're dad rock, gen Z doesn't like them.
Reaping what they sowed. We all will
My 9 year old daughter loves them. Made me promise to take her to a concert before they hang it up.
“And then there were three”, is one of the best albums to ever come out. Each song was a story told with passion in every note and lyric!!!!
overrated.
Jesus Christ, why are people making such a big deal out of something that happened OVER 2 DECADES ago!?
Because now we can all view bono's and co. shitty mistakes, thank you interwebz.
Juan Casillas Because they are watching it now? Why do people still get upset when watching movies about WW2?
jackcslewis2009 How do you compare WW2 and Bono dissing Phil Collins?
+Blake Talley lets take a look at yours. This was during ZooTv and Irish have different humor than imbeciles like you.
+Studio2770 Bahahaha zero likes, because you're a worthless fuckup. Apply yourself.
my memory from the original broadcast was adam saying"our parents have all your albums" im not sure if that was edited out or i had wrong then but i remember u2 being interviewed by phil collins as bono, edge, and adam were in a bar with a satalite feed-----please log on to equip.org
I remember this.. still quite funny.. I think Collins is quick on his feet..
I think it should be mandatory to be shitfaced when you accept a music award. It's more Rock and Roll, and definitely more fun.....
Hell yeah!
Yes!
Phil is acting a total pro here.
Bono, real? ha ha, yeah sure, in Dublin 4 more like
rofl. the whole comment section doesn't get that they were joking. cheez, what happened with humour 27 years later?
I know! It's funny!
Why are people so upset? U2 are only having a bit of fun with Phil. It's Phil Collins, it's not a victimless crime.
I think some people are taking it a bit too seriously.
Win an award, then insult the guy that is presenting the award to you...Real Class Act guys.
You never been pissed Mr Perfect?
*Alcohol makes people do/say funny things!*
Yeah that was hard to watch.
But it was Phil Collins!😂
“Dere’s more to oirlend Dan dis”
I am a fan of this youtube video, and so are all our parents
Wow you Phil Collins fans are taking this a bit seriously, possibly like the man himself? Personally, I don't have strong feelings about Collins either way but if he really took offense at this, he'd be quite pathetic. U2 get mocked on a daily basis but take it as part of the job and are always careful not to knock others. This teasing hardly counts. Finally U2 in their 40's had much more to offer than Collins in his 40's.
Invisible Touch!! Yeah man! I rock out when I hear that in the supermarket!
I've been a fan of U2's music since I was 10 but this made me angry and really sorry for Phil. Really disrespectful behavior. Even if it was a joke, it wasn't very funny.
How were they disrespectful
mistyblueeyes feck off, It's called the craic. And it was hilarious to see them come out of their shells
T Buss Feck off yourself.
***** Well it made Phil look like the underdog who was being made fun of.
mistyblueeyes So what, they weren't being serious
This is grogans in dublin city, great pub, great guinness, great staff, great toasties
It's the Old Dockers Bar in Sir John Rogerson Quay
@@rob7819 ah right , I always thought it was grogans 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@paulmcgrath6118 They have actually reopened the place. The pints looked great to be fair.Grogans is a great spot and the background looks really similar
@@rob7819 yeah it really looks a lot like grogans , I’ve never been to the old dockers bar , is it an early house ?
Although it was bad acting by U2 pretending to be drunk and giving an really awkward interview, I think Phil was very patient with them and remained professional.
You never get interviews like this anymore, and by the way the band can’t make it so we are going live stream to the PUB. It’s like a thing of yesteryear.
They weren't pretending.
@ Most on here say they weren’t drunk, and to me they don’t look drunk. The interview they gave wasn’t coherent with cringe jokes. I like their music always have done but they really are terrible here.
@@cryptocraig6748 I thought it was funny, but I’m from Dublin so maybe it’s a local thing.
@@cloudtowerphotography815
Off Topic ,
are the Bars out there on Dublin still any good ?
Do traditional ones still exist with Irish music or is this also a thing of yesteryear ?
@ There are still plenty of them.
they had a few good early albums. why is it love or hate with this band ? It must be the commercial success.
Cause Bono's a wanker. I'm not a fan but I get the appeal.
And because stupid people don't understand an obvious joke that Phil Collins had written and rehearsed beforehand even here.
Achtung Baby - the best U2 album ever there was and there ever will be.
***** Has anyone ever told you what a nice person you are? Thought not...
SuperGroovy23 I'm a real charmer ain't I lol ;D
***** Lol! 😂
KLR, I thought Achtung Baby was APPALLING, terrible commercial garbage. Even One is tedious shit to me now. GARBAGE. Laughable you'd think that shit better than Joshua Tree.
SubMachine1000 We get that you don't like Achtung Baby but is there a need to keep mentioning it on different people's comments?
U2 lost my interest after about 2005, I met Bono around 2005, the whole experience made me think how pointless it is to lionize a person, I think stardom went to his head imo, sometimes it is better not to meet those you admire, everyone has different experiences but mine changed my perspective on famous "stars"
what happened?
Thanks for sharing, as I'm sure your therapist says on a twice weekly basis
@@declanfitzpatrick8268 There is real therapy needed for those who lionize and obsess over complete strangers like Rock Stars.. maybe you're one of them?
I'm amazed at some of the comments below - don't you realise this was staged? As for the comment about Phil Collins having more talent in his finger...really?
I know...so weird...
Yeah, that's a bummer. And phil was so respectful, even humbling himself to say something such as, "If you need an opener, I'm here!". Bono and co. were always too full of themselves. They'll never leave behind the legend that Gabriel, Collins, and co. have.
Hahaha
he's poked fun at them in a more recent interview. I bet they know each other more than what we see.
HAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But when someone does actual good (and Bono's DATA program is working in Africa), they are called wankers.
looks like that that bar up on howth hill ?
This does not sit comfortably with me being Irish who are generally friendly and welcoming on the whole, trying to tell myself that this was a just a joke that Phil Collins was in on but seriously it does not look good, U2 may be talented and their lives shows legendary but this looks in very bad taste and somewhat embarrassing.
You know why Irish jokes are so simple, so Englishmen like Phil Collins can understand them.
@@soniamacintyre5229 That's pitty because English don't even bother to understand them. Irish are that irrelevant for English people.
@@ltr1745 It's just jovial banter on my behalf. I love the English, otherwise I would have never married one. :)
*Alcohol has been known to have such effects on the wide majority of people!*
I remember seeing that live when it happened.
Si bono hubiera hecho el 1% de lo que hizo Phil con génesis
.. seguramente habría escuchado algún disco de U2 ...
*Si tu comentario valiera la pena tomarlo en serio, lo habría impreso y enmarcado*
Is Bono blind? Wears shades in the dark. Weird.
He's got sensitive eyes apparently, it is a condition.
He’s got cataracts
Bono explained once that he suffers from glaucoma.
i did see him take them off once, on Graham Norton..
and a little explanation for why he wears them
Where was the insult?
They said 'drummers start to get a bit funny when they start singing' or something along those lines.
"Our parents love your music" as well
It was imaginary, like the comments sections ability to take a fucking joke.
@@Enne_esse you have piss pants in your family photos 😂🤣😂🤣
Nice to see skrillx hanging out with u2
The Edge pissed me off at 1:28 would he say that to Karen Carpenter or the singer/drummer in the Eagles??
@@adammartin7007 you don't know shit about prog rock please stop embarrassing yourself
The video's description states that it's "Bono and co. drunk, disrespecting a music legend" I'm confused because I see no disrespect and no music legend either. All I see is Bono and co. drunk, having a laugh with Phil Collins. Where's the disrespect & where's the music legend?
Its all fun and banter between them and Phil. People are taking this way too seriously.....
It doesn't matter to Adam Clayton if a chord is major or minor, never mind diminished or augmented. That guy only ever plays the root note. He's the most expendable bass player in history.
Who could imagine Phil the singer was such an absolute amazing drummer back in the day
Everyone who listened to Genesis since 1971when he began to play with 'em , mate :)
@@Stétellementbien yeahh
Every Genesis fan in the world mate and there's a lot of us !!!!
Oh, I wonder who else worked with Brian Eno?....Idiot!
Jacqueline Thomson I still prefer Phil over U2. Brian Eno was the man who helped U2 sound better.
I prefer 70's Genesis over U2 anytime.....
Curiously Brian Eno is the common denominator between U2 and Phil Collins...
Love that Bono’s humor triggers the comments section. More reasons for me to love him.
hey boomer you took yoga classes to become flexible enough to blow yourself because nobody else would do it 😂🤣😂🤣 triggered? You commented on 37 posts🤣😂🤣😂
Talk about rock stars off duty. What's next? Bono via satellite in the dentist chair or the Edge in the bath?
