Bono fucking pretentious and self-righteousness. That’s what faults. Like in the beginning, when U2 played a cover of Helter Skelter and Bono said: “We’re taking this song back from Charles Manson!” Stfu Bono!
So many whiny U2 haters who haven’t heard a song from the band in 30 years but try to convince themselves that the band is bad. Gimme a break! This is all because of jealousy and not liking Bono. U2 Is amazing and the soundtrack of my (and many others) life.

That’s true. Rock music is pretty much dead now due to hip hop and I doubt there will be a resurgence in the near future. We will never see another band get this big again.
Why is it impossible for people to understand how utterly brilliant U2 were? I'm with Noel on this and respect him for saying something that is deemed 'uncool'. Bono is a pretty nice guy but isn't that cool anymore and preaches a bit too much. U2 haven't really produced anywhere near their best since the early 90's but you can say that about most bands. U2 for more than a decade were very consistent and produced numerous good albums. Joshua Tree, The Unforgetable Fire and War are all superb. They then had the balls to change their sound at the peak of their popularity. Bono was also a bloody amazing singer/frontman in the 80's and isn't anything like how he is now as he is obviously much older. The Joshua Tree is so damn good it's almost too good. I feel sorry for people who don't get it. Coldplay have tried to nick from them so have Kings Of Lyon but U2 had far more credibility, weight and substance to their music. Listen to Bullet The Blue Sky and tell me it isn't immense. U2 have just become everyones punching bag of choice while they sit at home squeezing spots and buying into the latest turgid wafer thin indie group who are relevant for 5 minutes.
There's the famous story about when Sinatra met them and thought highly of them, probably because they asked him about music. Buddy Rich had recently died and Larry asked him about drummers from back in the day. Roy Orbison, BB King and Johnny Cash thought enough of them to sing songs that they'd written for them.
Respectfully, Stereo MCs weren't a thing yet at the time of the making of Achtung Baby. U2 were listening to Iggy, Bowie, Kraftwerk, Lou Reed, Public Enemy, KMFDM, The Young Gods, My Bloody Valentine, Sly and the Family Stone, Happy Mondays, and many others. Just not Stereo MCs.
Good point. 'Connected' and 'Step It Up' came up in late '92, while Achtung Baby a year before that. Also don't forget that the London Dance Scene from the early 90s heavily influenced other artists unrelated to the movement, such as Bjork, Madonna, etc.

@stiffgators4492 probably not but today we don't have talented musicians. You can make and release an album from your bedroom with no musical talent whatsoever and you don't even have to sing live anymore. Even if you try Auto tune males you sound good. We can agree to disagree on this one

He's said "shut about Africa and play One." But slagging off Bono for running his mouth and saying they're a rubbish band are very different. He's always said he loved em. Said Oasis and U2 were the best two bands in the world in 1997. Even Liam said he got U2 after seeing em live for the first time and of course kissed Bono on the mouth.
Think opinions like yours is all just based on you not liking the people he has hanging around with these days. NG has always had famous friends, no one ever had a problem with him 'name dropping' the likes of Johnny Marr, Paul Weller, Morrissey, Mani, Richard Ashcroft, Bobby Gillespie, Ewan Mcgregor, Kate Moss etc. But now because he is friends with people like Bono, Chris Martin, Damon Albarn, Russell Brand, Bradley Cooper, etc. suddenly he is a 'bell end'?
When I was a kid, I lived and breathed U2. Was mad for 'em, from 1981, when I was 11, right up to 1989, when I saw them three times on their Australian tour with BB King. But it was during that tour that Bono, doing a post-gig interview with the rest of the band on MMM, introduced me to the Pixies. And while I remained a U2 fan until 1993 when they came out for the Zoo Tour, they became my second favourite band in almost the blink of an eye. Since then, though, I've seen through the lie of U2. That lie, well beyond Memory Man echo units etc, can be heard in bootleg recordings of performances that would go on to be live album tracks. The best 'worst example' is the recording of All Along the Watchtower on R&H. Never mind the fact that the moment of that "Save the Yuppies" free gig, the spray painting on the Vaillancourt Fountain sculpture occurred during Pride but was cut into AATW. If you listen to the original recording, the band, more specifically Edge, butcher that song. But they fixed it in post. And to my way of thinking, that's a movie expression. It runs counter to the idea of rock and roll. And for a band who claimed to adhere to the three chords and the truth spirit of music, realising that the band I'd invested my entire adolescence in were essentially liars...that hurt. After Achtung Baby, I was pretty much done with them, outside of the show in 1993. But I haven't bought an album or song since. I don't begrudge or bemoan anyone liking them, if you do, great. It doesn't pick my pocket or break my leg, as they say. But it felt like a betrayal.
funny - its been the opposite for me. i loved the joshua tree and achtung baby when i was a kid (still do). i lost interest in their records after that. but ive seen them live twice in the past few years, and it really increased my respect for them. their catalogue is phenomenal. live, they are one of the most charismatic and epic things ive ever encountered. the feeling of being in the crowd while songs like where the streets have no name, ultraviolet, sometimes you cant make it on your own, new years day, stuck in a moment, one, etc etc etc are being played is a genuinely powerful experience. im sorry that somewhere along the road you became disillusioned with them. i think they make some of the most inspired sounds paired with poetry that humanity has ever invented. and as far as the post fixing thing, music is a business. one bad gig or performance cant ruin a multimillion $ operation. rock n roll is actually a carefully crafted illusion, just like film :) how they got there doesnt really matter - the important thing is that they leave behind recordings for history to enjoy. one bad performance does not a shitty musician make.
Strange. I saw them live recently and they continue to sound amazing, especially for a band whose members are pushing 60. I agree with LoLzZ85, post-performance corrections for live albums or movies are hardly exclusive to U2. Moreover, a lot of these creative decisions (such as moving the spray painting moment to AATW or patching up live tracks) are made by directors and producers, and not the band itself (this is just my educated guess). I would hardly liken this to a "betrayal" though. These guys pour their hearts out live. Go watch them.
Jesus christ, I'm not the biggest fan of U2 but this as a criticism is the stupidest thing I've read in a while. Almost every band that has released live material have altered their tracks in post. You might as well stop listening to music if stuff like that bothers you...
Bono is God, pop is their greatest underrated album that philistines don’t understand, and you clearly have gone deaf since the 2000s since they reached an renaissance with their music.

People, let me give you a piece of advice when discussing any form of art. Always use "IMO." Art is subjective. One person thinks they've had 50 great songs. Another person thinks they've had 1. And neither is right or wrong. So, when you make artistic declarations, not using "IMO" makes you sound like a moron. IMO, U2 is the greatest band in history is much better than, for some people, the head exploding, "U2 is the greatest band in history." They are, but that's a different topic for a different day.
No shit. Sure, a lot of people speak with objective tone, but it's up to you to give them the benefit of the doubt and not expect that they think what they have to say is factual. If they repeatedly demonstrate that what they think is fact, then it is worthy of lecturing them, but all you're going to get is "fucking duh" half the time.
When he says 'I've always been a fan of U2' he's lying. I can spot a liar every time and I tell you he's lying. Try this.... Watch him again with the volume turned off..... You see it in his face. Works every time. Turn off the volume and you can see right through people. That'll be five pounds please.... Lol
I try not to listen to U2 but it's difficult to avoid radio favorites like Goldeneye or When Love Came to Town which sound to me like they were written by a twelve year old child.
lol...WLCTT is not what I would call a U2 radio favorite, but I don't see a 12year old composing that. And Goldeneye, I can't wait to hear what she's talking about. Sorry, Emily Bill.
U2 is indeed one of the greatest rock band of all time, but sadly Bono lost it all, voice, soul, charisma. Back in the 80's in the war era, they were actually fighting for good causes and with a good spirit. Now what? Bono does pseudo charity, has became so egomaniac, is even part of the bohemian grove..
U2 have had one good song in the last twenty years. They became an epic parody of themselves and the only reason Noel feels the need to defend them is because he supported them so often which propped up his own band.
When you discuss music or any art for that matter, you should use "IMO." For example, "U2 have had one good song in the last twenty years, IMO." If you don't use "IMO" you sound dumb. Don't sound dumb. Sound smart.
Yes, if I wasn't convinced about the subject I may well have done that. But I was clearly offering my personal critique because that's essentially all I have. And if I'd been writing it for Rolling Stone or another music based periodical I'd also have avoided using IMO.
Thats one good song more than 99% of the so called artists out there have managed to create in the last 20 years then. Name me one single artist or band that have been consistently great for 40 years plus? Its impossible. Everyone has their creative heights and then fall off. Yes, they could have called it a day after Beautiful Day and been remembered for only making great music but they love to do what they do. They still have some songs that their fans enjoy, they arent trying to be the most relevant band anymore, they are in their 50s for Christ sake. Just because their newer stuff isnt as excellent as their older stuff doesn't mean they weren't at one time one of the best bands on the planet.
U2 have had, like, consistently good songs over the past 40 years. I can’t fathom why so many people whine about them when lyrically they’ve gotten better, and the edge hasn’t even changed his guitar style in 20 years meaning that the band still has the same unique sound running through each song.

That’s Noel U2 are cool my best song is New Year’s Day 🫵🤛
Why is it impossible for people to understand how utterly brilliant U2 were?

So much of Bob Dylan's memoir is about how Bono is actually really cool.
I still hate their guts.
Urban legend is 'in a little while' was the last song Joey Ramone heard while alive.

U2 were listening to Iggy, Bowie, Kraftwerk,
Lou Reed, Public Enemy, KMFDM,
The Young Gods, My Bloody Valentine,
Sly and the Family Stone, Happy Mondays, and many others.

Yet1 Nah your just salty he called you out on your shit buddy
Can't believe you guys are picking on them for post performance corrections on live releases. Virtually all bands and artists do that.
funny - its been the opposite for me. i loved the joshua tree and achtung baby when i was a kid (still do). i lost interest in their records after that. but ive seen them live twice in the past few years, and it really increased my respect for them. their catalogue is phenomenal. live, they are one of the most charismatic and epic things ive ever encountered. the feeling of being in the crowd while songs like where the streets have no name, ultraviolet, sometimes you cant make it on your own, new years day, stuck in a moment, one, etc etc etc are being played is a genuinely powerful experience. im sorry that somewhere along the road you became disillusioned with them. i think they make some of the most inspired sounds paired with poetry that humanity has ever invented. and as far as the post fixing thing, music is a business. one bad gig or performance cant ruin a multimillion $ operation. rock n roll is actually a carefully crafted illusion, just like film :) how they got there doesnt really matter - the important thing is that they leave behind recordings for history to enjoy. one bad performance does not a shitty musician make.
Can you clarify what you don't like or what the lie is?
