This is one of the most tame Dillinger songs. Has just little tiny hints of how crazy they are. Fun fact: Mike Patton of Mr. Bungle did an incredible EP with them.

That's why I think they're the most truly chaotic band I've ever heard. They can knock you into next week with some insane technical song like Panasonic Youth, or they can lull you into a sense of security with something beautiful like Mouth Of Ghosts, or do something in between like this. The fact that they were able to pull off all those different types of sounds and be both truly unpredictable but also sound great is a testament to just how great Dillinger was.

Yeah I was gonna say. I know close to nothing but a roommate I had would play them and show me videos. It's why I've left their music to discover later. It seems so chaotic and maybe I won't like it. I mean, who knows. I'm currently more into Tool, Meshuggah, Animals As Leaders....
I'll give their discography a listen eventually. They've been on my mind ever since. My roommate was a huge fan. His favorite band. He kept going to see them live too.

my favorite Dillinger escape plan song is: When good dogs do bad things. It's on a Dillinger EP with mike patton the guy from mr bungle on vocals. another cool dillinger song is 43% burnt. if i remember correctly 43% burnt is off of their 1st album calculating infinity which came out in 1999 and I think is highly influential for this genre of music. the band drive like jetu released an album in 1994 which influenced bands like dillinger. I think i am remembering all of this correctly lol.. another really cool band is refused. they are a swedish band who have an incredible album called "the shape of punk to come" it's this crazy hybrid punk, electro, jazz crazy album. I really like it. thanks for listing to my rant lol.

SO SICK to see the Drive Like Jehu influence mentioned here! I grew up in a band that was heavily influenced by this random vein that came out that San Diego post-hardcore sound (Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes) - early 2000s bands like Neil Perry and Joshua Fit For Battle and later on These Arms are Snakes and Hot Cross. These Arms are Snakes was definitely one of the most underrated bands of the last 20 years, IMHO. Definitely worth checking out. Also... not a lot of people realize that Hot Snakes reunited to do an album in 2018 called Jericho Sirens. Fun listen for people who remember this movement. Thanks for this comment.

Thanks a lot for suprising me by listening to my favourite band!
Some side notes on DEP: their first releases had another singer and consist of pure brutality with far fewer melody. The EP with Mike Patton was made while they were looking for a fix replacement, and it's batshit crazy in every good way! I think this collab was a major influence for the bands further evolvement as for me it feels like Patton made them open up to any musical genre that may become handy for what they wanted to do next. So after this when Greg joined the band they were ready to use Dillingers full potential and every next album just got musically richer and deeper up until the end.
I was lucky to catch em live about 5 times here in germany and I'm totally fine with them quitting when they did, I don't know anything comparable to the energy they unleashed from stage. Every single gig they gave more than everything and noone can expect them to "do the dillinger show" for another 20 years. I really don't want to advertise, but just if you are interested there is some live-footage from their last tour (prancer/when i lost my bet) on my channel and I also made some multi-angle videos from their last shows in NYC where Patton did open the set with them (when good dogs do bad things) or just check "dillinger (Crazy Moments Compilation)" here on YT :)
Others already commented that this is one of their tamest songs and I don't wan't to be greedy by suggesting one track per album to show their evolution, so if any it should be Farewell Mona Lisa. Thanks for what you are doing, wish you all the best!

What I love about Dillinger’s approach to slower songs is that they take progressive rock conventions and place it through the lens of the hardcore band that they are. This leads to even the softest moments to have a brooding atmosphere to them that greatly compliment their otherwise chaotic metalcore style

    @forgotn42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fantastic! Been hoping you'd check them out for a while now and I'm stoked you finally did. As many others have pointed out, One of Us is the Killer is their most accessible track but I think something that gets overlooked is that it's not accessible because they dumbed their sound down, but because they had fine-tuned it over the past decade. As you noted a couple times, it's a very complex song with a lot of unusual choices & transitions. That complexity and unusualness is a big part of their sound, but most of their prior discography was much more experimental in format while the album this track came from took that sound and put it into a more familiar rock/metal structure. Their earliest albums didn't even bother with the traditional verse/chorus structure on most songs.
Other awesome tracks are Milk Lizard, Black Bubblegum, Baby's First Coffin, Unretrofied, and, of course, Farewell, Mona Lisa.

I'm so glad you did this because I love this band, but had simply not listened to them in a long time! Now I'm diving back into their discography, and it's such a treat! They were truly one of a kind, and there has never been, and likely never will be again, a band that puts on such an absolutely INSANE live show! They would regularly be doing crazy guitar solos while crowd surfing (after diving guitar first off a stack into the crowd) and hanging upside down from the rafters screaming entire verses of songs, and that's just the tip of the iceberg! What I'd give to see them live one last time!!

(personal suggestion is "Understanding Decay" from the album One of Us is the Killer, but many other commenters have left you many good suggestions) PS: They had three different singers through their tenure, so buckle up for a wild ride. Keep up the great work!

PS. Farewell, Mona Lisa is an absolute banger and showcases their range pretty well. Milk Lizard, Unretrofied, and Black Bubblegum are the more traditional type songs(?) Some of the heavy weird chaotic shit they get into is Panasonic Youth, 43% burnt, Paranoia Sheilds, Honeysuckle

@@mpk33 Dillinger Escape Plan never gave up and always progressed. Not that some bands can hold a mathcore style their whole careers. Dillinger Escape Plan span two decades killing albums killing my ears and destroying stages while playing an Eclectic heavy as s*** discography. I mean look at a bands like botch they turned into Minus the Bear and Minus the Bear is amazing. Don't put good music in a box. Dillinger Escape plan is the epitome of a jazzy band that could play anything but decided to play metal and grind. They're one of the most influential grind bands that ever graced the stage

@@justinquamme916 This is not about pigeon-holing or anything like that. It's just a shame that people hear Dillinger's worst stuff first, instead of their best. If someone played this for me, I'd be like "ehhhh" 🤷🏻‍♂️ & not think much of them. Play me their brutal stuff & I'd be saying like I still am now, 18 years on & many Dillinger shows survived before they split..."holy fkn shit!"

This is a very pop-ish and mellow song from them! Much of it is VERY disjointed and hectic - yet also oftentimes with jazzy pieces and beautiful hooklines, or weird electronic/ambient or even classical breakdowns. Many songs have a much much harder metal side. Some songs are mostly ambient or transitional, and some songs like Widower, Horse Hunter and Endless Endings, have it all, with all kinds of odd instrumentations etc. THANK YOU for doing this! And im so glad you enjoyed it and/or found it intriguing! ❤️❤️🍀🍀

I’d recommend limerent death, farewell Mona Lisa, pranced and sunshine the werewolf, maybe milk lizard and 43% burnt too. Those are pretty much their most famous songs (apart from sunshine maybe, not sure about that one) and they showcase pretty much everything Dillinger does best. 43% burnt does have a different vocalist though. Love the vids, keep up the great work!

The first time I heard this song it took a permanent spot on my top 10 songs ever. Dillinger has a LOT of really crazy, chaotic songs. Definitely one of their more accessible songs, others like "black bubblegum" "gold teeth on a bum" "symptom of terminal illness" are kind of in a similar vein. "Farewell Mona Lisa" is incredible too but starts off super intense in a way this song doesn't. Does represent their range well. Dillinger is impossible to explain or really prepare anyone for lol

    • @agateforghosts291

"dissociation" "mouth of ghosts" "widower" "parasitic twin" are other excellent songs of their more melodic side.

Would love to hear more of Dillinger reviews from you - Farewell Mona Lisa or Limerent Death if you are interested in how they are layering multiple jazzy and metal moods in one song; Happiness is a Smile for a great example of modern metal production that is not just djenty chuggs, Mouth of Ghosts for even more elaborate but still mellow soundscapes. Or - Prancer, just to see how they sound when they are going full aggro.
