I just want to thank you for being one of the very few 'actual' reaction channels. No dumb faces, no pausing every 15 seconds for a dumb joke, no jump cuts, just genuine thoughtful opinions and criticisms. It doesn't go unappreciated.
Agreed one hundred percent! One of the most frustrating reaction channels, for me, is the Charismatic Voice. She's an opera singer and actually has some great insight into how singers are using their voices, what parts of their vocal cords, etc, and her reactions seem genuine and can be fun to watch. My frustration comes when she pauses the song 20ish seconds in, discusses what happened, ESPECIALLY if she liked it, then starts from the beginning again, and maybe gets 15 or so seconds further before stopping, discussing, and STARTING OVER AGAIN. I noticed it especially on her Rammstein videos because she loves Till's voice. It's great to see her genuinely love what she's experiencing, but it's frustrating when it's constantly paused and replayed.

Check out the video 'Riff Analysis 023 - The Dillinger Escape Plan "Prancer"' by Metal Music Theory. He explains how oftentimes, in his view, Dillinger actually foregoes playing in any time signature and just play a groove that feels right on an intuitive level, playing tightly together off-meter. Which is why some of their songs never sound the same way twice rhythmically.
Wow. I don't think I've heard a metal group perform in free time without it obviously sounding like free time. I'll have to check out that video and look into this song's meter as well.

Dillinger Escape Plan DO have GORGEOUS melodic parts in quite some songs. You might come across some in or outside the channel in the future 😊
Since you like Extol, I have to ask: have you heard of the band AZUSA? With the bassplayer from Dillinger Escape Plan, guitarist and drummer from Extol and (female) vocalist from SEA+AIR/JumboJet/Daniel Benjamin. Their sound is probably closest to Extol's Synergy album, but with some of the weird intensity of DEP and, of course, the female vocals (screams and clean).

Dillinger songs work best after listening to them few more times. First time I heard them I was confused just like you but after few more listening they started to grow on me, I was able to recognize song structure and appreciate what they are trying to do.
I was hoping you'd hit this one for a while. Love the jazz-style drumming in the intro and outro.
I think I've said before on here that DEP is a band I have a lot of respect for, but one that tends to leave me pretty cold. Love their originality, how unpredictable and insanely virtuosic they are, but they rarely write anything that really sticks with me. Occasionally they'll have a nice melodic or hooky moment, but too many songs are like this one where it just abruptly transitions from one abrasive, chaotic rhythmic idea to another abrasive, chaotic rhythmic idea. Intellectually I can have fun trying to decode the time signatures and just enjoying the whiplash transitions, but that's about the extent of my "enjoyment." I also haven't heard their later albums as much as their early stuff, so even though I have heard this track/album this is still pretty fresh to me because I've probably just heard it once or twice a long time ago. I also agree that this wouldn't come to mind when thinking about dissonant music. Though there are definitely dissonant ideas, mostly in some of the guitar chords, the track is really organized around the herky-jerky rhythms rather than in the dissonances. At least in terms of rock/metal when I think of dissonances I think of bands like Ulcerate, Gorguts, Immolation, etc., bands that really emphasize chromatic and diatonic dissonances.
Right on track with both of these thoughts. DEP is wild and I enjoy reacting to them but nothing has really stuck with me yet. Same goes for my dissonance exceptions. *But* after looking up the definition of dissonance I suppose this fits -- it's more dissonant in structure than tone though. The definition is actually a pretty wide net so it'll interesting to see how people interpreted it when they suggested these songs.

I love the way that they sit right on the edge of randomness. They've got just enough groove to keep me hooked. Horses for courses, I guess. They were fucking awesome live, saw them 4 times.

I always based the song around the snare hits in the beginning being eight notes and the ride hits being dotted eights. It is essentially a basic pattern of three over two just interpreted differently, I find rest of the song to evolve around that pulse. They just don't play it on the grid, which gives the song it's liveliness.

Yup, that explains the "flesh connections" between some of the actors in the video. Also fleshes out the concept of the person in the pit with dirt (?) being thrown down on them -- always taking the scraps to help rise up the ranks in fame.
I'm not ready for this band, which is something I appreciate about them.

Hi Bryan ! You should try to see Frontierer - The Molten Larva. They usually do some more speedy stuff, but this one is actually quite slow and yet still quite chaotically dissonant and destructive, with the lowest tone of guitar you've heard ahah. Btw they've just dropped a new album :)

Talking of dissonance, you MUST check that out. It is a microtonal song, but very beautiful! Older, but only 11k views. Hardly anyone has heard of him.

Very cool...These guys are def schooled musicians..You would have to write this out to play it properly..Those melodic passages tie it all together..Great pick..Peace from the Northeast..

@@CriticalReactions woo! You might like it or hate it but you're guaranteed to be intrigued at the very least. First time I heard them I really didn't know how to take it in. IT are a group of jazz musicians who understand musical conventions and seem to do almost everything that they can to subvert and pervert those conventions

I had a vague idea that Dillinger Escape Plan were not my cup of tea. Not sure why - if I've heard them before it was a very long time ago. Now I know they're not! I struggled to pick out much which I'd consider music in this track. Each to their own though.
A large of the drums are in 7/8, but there’s 3/4, 2/4, 5/4, 5/8, 9/8, 13/15, 13/16, and I think a blistering 15/16 part. There’s teeny tiny little parts in 4/4. It’s all over the place and it’s incredible haha. This is one of my favorite songs to listen to for the drums.

I'd say this is one of their more structured songs.
These guys defined this style of dissonant rhythmic jabs and inspired a whole genre of math metal. Calculating Infinity changed my musical world when it came out. Completely groundbreaking stuff. A better starting point in my opinion…
Mathcore* . It was done before them though but they were very influential nevertheless.
I agree, more noisy and a bit chaotic. Not really much dissonance considering the week’s theme.
I looked up dissonance after making this one to see just how wide of a net it casts. And yeah.....I should have been more specific about harmonic dissonance 😅

I don’t know if you have the rest of the week's videos planned out but if not you really should check out The Chariot! I'd go with their song David De La Hoz feat. Dan Smith of Listener. Not the music video though, it's recorded live in one take and, while it is great and absolutely worth watching, for your channel's purpose I'd recommend the studio version!
Yeah, each themed week is planned out through Patreon. Sometimes I'll do an extra video, outside of the plan, that fits the theme though. I'll keep this in mind just in case.

I absolutely love Dillinger but I understand your (and many other peoples') aversion to them. The first time I heard them, I absolutly hated it lol. But after a number of years I relistened and enjoyed it so much more. Great video !!

Lead guitarist Ben Weinman once said in an interview that a lot of DEP music may sound chaotic, but it's actually carefully planned and everything is exactly where it is supposed to be.
I think this one is actually mostly 4/4, if you'd take time to count through a LOT of accents and fragments, similar to Tigran Hamasyan. It's almost easier to NOT count the beats when playing this, but instead focusing purely on memory and the subdivisions nearest to what you're doing right now.
Now I'm wondering if I started in the obvious 4/4 section and forced myself to keep that 4 and we went to a less obvious section if it would still line up.
