No band would enjoy the tag 'mathcore', it suggests music created via adherence to formula. Battles have been referred to as mathcore and they fucking hate it, well that's what they told me 11 years ago anyway. Oh man, can't believe I just name-dropped and I feel dirty for doing so...

+Jason Mercieca Yeah, you should thank , I think Trey found DEP, or Patton, they hate each other, why Bungle ended, but if you' have been listening to music im' sure it's been influenced by Patton who was on Warner from '89 to '99 with Faith No More and Mr Bungle, started his label "Ipecac" with super groups, Fantomas, Tomahawk, and his pop project Peeping Tom that was in discussions with Warner but ended up on Ipecac, which along with another label released the new Faith No More - I didn't mention tons of things, go listen to Mondo Cane, Moonchild, Lovage, General Patton vs the Xecutioners, the monster voices in Will Smith 's I AM LEGEND (I know he was the actor) Patton is acting in I forget the name of the wanna be Lynch Film, he did soundtrack to The Place Beyond the Pines and Crank 2 , he does vocals for video games, ect, ect ect

Historically, I never really understood Dillinger, but this album converted me. The production is perhaps the meanest and sickest I've heard on a metal album. Only complaint is that a couple tracks are completely redundant by the end. Light 8 is a good score.

Haha, but in all utter seriousness, when i saw them live opening for Mastodon back in 2011 my jaw dropped and i couldn't stop thrashing. This album was fucking fantastic, this album solidified my love for them, 10/10 I love almost everything by them even when they had dimitri in the calculating infinity era, I first heard this band in 07 on fuel TV playing "fix your face" and I was caught up but couldn't really get around to understand mathcore at the time but ever since I bought this back when it came out I dug more into them and bought all their records, all of em are excellent records including their stuff with mike Patton on vocals that Ep is phenomenal, listen to this band if you know know what's good for you haha

I think the Glockenspiel in "Magic that I Held you Prisoner" makes that song when listening to the right mix. While listening through my speakers I agree that it is a bit loud in the mix, but through my headphones it comes out really nice, and accents the snare really well.

At first I thought the ending track (The Threat Posed By Nuclear Weapons) wasn't much of a great way to end the album, but now I bloody love it and think it's my favourite ending to an album I've ever heard. I normally prefer albums with a big finale, like Save Me on the album Nightmare by Avenged Sevenfold. But the lyrics on the song are simply wonderful and you feel like the song is a flashback of the entire album. Also, review Option Paralysis by Dillinger. It's all I've been listening to this week. Aaaaaannnddd great review! Your reviews are really good and I agree with most of them.

you should do a question/comment thing about the importance of technical proficiency in music for the listener. i think its interesting that lot of the most interesting and engaging music acts (for me at least) aren't always the most technically proficient, while a lot of obviously talented musicians either feels vain and flashy or just boring to me. not to say that i don't have a lot of love and respect for particular technical artists, but it doesn't always correlate to music i identify with.

Anyway, when Option came out to me it was sort of a sigh of relief to hear them finally just pummeling out fury again and it made me sort of realize how much I missed that. So, this album comes off as....not a let down, but it leaves me wanting more. The beginning of the record is incredible, but it loses steam about halfway through. Review new QOTSA next.

I know it was like 10 years ago but it seems like so many people have forgotten or just don't know about the "Irony Is A Dead Scene" EP That Dillinger did with Mike Patton before Greg P. was even in the band and it's been obvious with every release since Miss Machine that the work Patton did with Dillinger really has had a HUGE impact on the band. I only bring this up because if you are one of the people that don't know about this EP then you really need to do yourself a favor. It's phenomenal.

not sure and not sure. never been huge on evile. they've never really sounded that different from old school metallica to me. which is cool, but doesn't get my guns blazing. the whole djent sound has never really appealed to me either, honestly. thoughts?

I definitely agree that Evile are very old-school in their approach to the genre, but honestly I just feel refreshed by that. At least they're refining their sound, they could easily just be making the same album over and over.
As for TesseracT, they've also grown a lot from where they were in the past. The previews from the new album feature a lot of jazz influences among the regular djents, and it's a very interesting mix. You could always just give them a low score if you dislike them :)

Crossburner was definitely my favorite song on the album.

You cite Mike Patton and Trent Reznor as possible influences. Well, Patton used to sing in Dillenger for a little while and Dillenger joined Nine Inch Nails on stage during their "last show" a few years ago.

You're good at reviewing metal without getting bogged down in subgenre talk. So many metal reviews are just biased rants about hating certain subgenres. Nicely done.
