I was trying to reinvent Superman, to find a bridge between the ideal and almost inhuman paragon of justice and the gritty soul torned tortured version of the recent movies. I wrote a storyline that allowed him to be both human and super but I lacked one crucial thing to make it all make sense: motivation. In my story Clark is a gentle giant at first, but I didn't really know how to transition him from an unassuming guy unwilling to bear too much responsibility to a hero who would try to better the world in a purely altruistic way. My first idea was to let his adoptive parents die of a natural disease, something he could do nothing about, but I felt this was more a way to make him realize he couldn't win every battle than a true motivation. This video gave me the idea. Clark would eventually fall into a form of apathy, going through the motions unable to feel civic rights because he was so different and immune to the needs other felt. He would seek refuge and excitement in impossible situation such as traveling through space, exploring the depth, swimming in volcanoes, doing things only he could do. Feeling the world would take care of itself anyway. But then he would witness and be engulfed in a nuclear blast. This is what would eventually shape him into Superman, witnessing both the power of the human race and its ability to produce horrors. The need for people, for everyone to grow consciences, especially people with such a destructive power. This is what would transition him from a good guy without a care in the world to a virtuous hero, this is the motivation he needs to put so much effort into being a good guy, a moral icon. The sight of a nuclear blast, and the thoughtlessness of people over it. A well researched look into the history of Superman and his relationship with atomic weapons. That modern comic with the atomic bomb, when he recovered using the solar power of plants etc? That was gruesome, THAT would make a great Superman movie

Thanks for the video! I think I'm going to tell my Sci Fi in Film professor about it. He LOVES 40s-60s sci fi, especially those tackling issues of nuclear war. I think he'll enjoy this too.
Yeah. And I now remember a claim I heard from "The Return Of Zorro", that nitroglycerin is "Thirteen times, more powerful than gunpowder." . I don't whether that claim is true (or, "corresponds with reality" - Paul Herrick, Think with Socrates: an Introduction to Critical Thinking), cuz it came from a movie🎥, which people have often taught me to doubt, but if it "corresponds with reality", then I both think it might help this discussion, and I like the quote a lot, so I decided to mention it here.
This video was amazing as all NerdSync videos are! Excellent editing, effects, script, the lot! Also, don't worry about being too serious, we can handle it!
I've gotta say, this is one of my favorite videos you've made so far! The production has grown so much since I first subscribed. If you plan to make more long scale videos like this then they are well worth the wait!
Luthor Leading With The Wiggly Ray,&,Ending With The Atomic Friggin’ Bomb is Like Saying”You Think This is Bad,Wait Until You See What Else I Have in Store”
Well, that almost made me cry at the end there. What a message. It really reflects how I feel about the world. We've only got one planet, we've got to take care of it somehow. Thank you Scott.
The most unrealistic part of that movie wasn't the flying alien of Mr. Lungren's nuclear powers. It was that the UN clapped for him when he said "I'll force you to disarm" and the governments agreed to the program. You just know the US and most other countries would hide a few under ground in a lead vault so Superman couldn't see it. If Superman told me that story, I'd post it on r/thathappened.
I'm afraid that North Korea, Iran, Russia and USA would just respond with firering all their nukes at each other, and Supes having to fly around to catch them all.
I don't care much about superheroes, but I loved every minute of this video. It was incredible! Superman throwing the nukes into the sun to destroy them is pretty ridiculous, BUT I think it's wishful thinking... It reflects how many of us would like to just get over those weapons that create so much anxiety for us, and for nuclear disarmament to be less complicated (not depending on politics, competing nuclear powers, etc.).
@nerdsync Scott, just, wow. You continue to out do yourself. This was an incredibly informative, thoughtful and thought provoking video. Keep doing what you do, keep being you man. I can't tell you how much of an inspiration you are to me personally.
I was wondering. Not to seem demanding but do you think you can make a video talking about how comic books can be profound? Mainly because of Bill Maher’s recent comments about comic books and geek culture on his show. It was extremely ignorant and want someone to show how that what he said isn’t true
Idk, I don't want to even address Bill Maher because all he wants is attention. If I make a video about him, he wins. He got attention. Hopefully my channel in general along with many other great channels and books will speak to the idea of comics being profound without needing to address Bill Maher at all.
Truly excellent video. I loved it. I love learning history and facts and while Superman 4 has it's problems; I think the overall message is wonderful. I think it;s interesting to see how the public's perception of nuclear weapons changed over the years.
My god! This was an amazing video!!! I love it so much! You deserve so much more views! Keep up the good work! The one question I have is should Superman really be invulnerable to atomic weapons? If he absorbs radiation from the sun to get his power, shouldn’t he also absorb the bad types of radiation from an A-Bomb? I always assumed that’s what happened in “The Dark Knight Returns”.
I'm probably the only one that actually likes Superman IV. It's Christopher Reeve as Superman, and in the end, that's all I need for me to declare a great Superman film. Having him in Man of Steel and Justice League would have gotten my butt planted in that seat in the theater.
Scott, this was awesome! I literally laughed out loud several times! And that's despite the depressing material... Love this video and this channel. You do an awesome job! Keep them coming!
You found much deeper meaning in Superman 4 than anyone else ever has. If you could do that for an Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, or Pauly Shore movie...well, let's face it. You can't do the impossible. You're not a miracle worker, after all, and to find meaning in something it has to be there to begin with, and their films have none.
At the beginning of the Justice League show Superman disarms all the world’s weaponry (Then aliens attack the Justice League appears etc.) Also, I think it would be cool if you made a video about what elements Metamorpho the Element Man’s body is made of
Duck and cover. 1. In school were told to duck under those heavy wood desk. 2. The schools were brick and ceramics. Windows open north, south, east, and west. 3. Blast, flash, instance cremation. So schools would have death zones, think about it.I walked home on that day in October from Riley Elm, thru the whyt section to my home, made two sandwich, prayed and went to bed.
I really like this style of presenting. The make up and set dressing all frame the video essay brilliantly and I like your humorous acting talent. Thank you.

So anything nuclear, yeah, we have no sense of scale.
Great video! The parallel between Chris Hadfield and Superman’s words were a very interesting note to end on
You know scot your production and content have become top notch, congratulations
Can I just say how well-made this video is? You did such a good job, Scott!
Every time I realize that I will probably die without seeing the Earth from space, I get really sad. It must be the most amazing thing to witness.
Man your content and quality just gets better and better
That modern comic with the atomic bomb, when he recovered using the solar power of plants etc? That was gruesome, THAT would make a great Superman movie
Wow, watching your channel grow and those production values to evolve is trully astounding. This deserves WAY more views. I know that sometimes viewership may not be as high as you would hope, when you work hard on your research and topic, but don't give up. Seriously, this channel is special! :)
this video honestly made me feel a ton of emotions, it was an amazing video and somehow it all was about superman 4
Hi Scott! Just going back through all these great videos while I'm stuck in Quarantine
Thanks for the video! I think I'm going to tell my Sci Fi in Film professor about it. He LOVES 40s-60s sci fi, especially those tackling issues of nuclear war. I think he'll enjoy this too.
13:41 I'm not an explosive expert, but uh, dynamite isn't TNT. They're entirely different things.
They both make-a da boom though, right?
I keep forgetting that dynamite contains nitroglycerin, not trinitrotoluene. Nice catch there!
That one song has lied to me.
C’mom, it’s obvious that accuracy is not a premium on this channel
You deserve a standing ovation ♥
Great job, Scott.
I was so hoping you would include that Morrison excerpt, it’s such a wonderful piece of writing.
This video was amazing as all NerdSync videos are! Excellent editing, effects, script, the lot! Also, don't worry about being too serious, we can handle it!
This was beautiful, Scott! Very poignant and well-produced. And I *did* watch that Flash video so ::blows raspberry::
I've gotta say, this is one of my favorite videos you've made so far! The production has grown so much since I first subscribed. If you plan to make more long scale videos like this then they are well worth the wait!
This is one of your best videos yet Scott, well done!!
Luthor Leading With The Wiggly Ray,&,Ending With The Atomic Friggin’ Bomb is Like Saying”You Think This is Bad,Wait Until You See What Else I Have in Store”
This is absolutely fantastic. In-depth, well-researched. Absolutely profound. Well done.
You’re the most consistently great TH-camrs! Thank you for your hard work!!
Well, that almost made me cry at the end there. What a message. It really reflects how I feel about the world. We've only got one planet, we've got to take care of it somehow. Thank you Scott.
Your content is so fantastic I am willing to watch this thirty eight minutes long video all the way to the end!
Beautiful video. Wow, I'm shocked. It was so packed. Thanks Nerdsync.🤘
I loved the creative and thoughtful approach to this video!
This is some of your best stuff, man. Thanks!
I'm afraid that North Korea, Iran, Russia and USA would just respond with firering all their nukes at each other, and Supes having to fly around to catch them all.
superman has super hearing and x ray vision though
Great job on the lighting/color grading & make up. Also, well done on merging IRL history with comic history.
Another excellent video, Scott!
Don't worry Scott, I watched your Flash video!
I also watched the video
Me too, and I'm not even a subscriber.
@@JaelinBezel You should fix that
Well thanks, gang!
@@dyland9745 Sorry but my budget won't allow it. It's either this or The Imaginary Axis, and I really like The Imaginary Axis.
Hey I just wanted to say that I have been loving your show ever since I started watching about 3 years ago.
Damn man. The production in these videos is better than that I see in channel with millions of subscribers. Keep it up dude!
It’s obvious you put so much effort into these and it’s a crime you don’t get more views.
If it helps, he got torn to shreds in the media about it. The guy is a loon anyway, no one who matters takes him seriously.
C W yeah that does help. Thanks!
Idk, I don't want to even address Bill Maher because all he wants is attention. If I make a video about him, he wins. He got attention. Hopefully my channel in general along with many other great channels and books will speak to the idea of comics being profound without needing to address Bill Maher at all.
NerdSync Yeah I hope all you guys prove that too. Thank you!
Truly excellent video. I loved it. I love learning history and facts and while Superman 4 has it's problems; I think the overall message is wonderful. I think it;s interesting to see how the public's perception of nuclear weapons changed over the years.
This might be the best comic book channel on the tube
Love this channel. Always great info and a unique perspective. Im glad you put the human bean juice joke in. I was waiting for it.
Love you Scott keep making this Gold
36:20 I had to check the date on when this video was published, sheesh
This video is one of the most expertly made videos I've ever seen on youtube. I was hooked the whole way through.
I don’t want to set the world on fire!
Edit: Whoa that’s quite a few likes.
You found the NerdSync bobblehead!
IT WAS ALWAYS BURNING SINCE THE WORLD WAS TURNING!!!
sorry I had to 😋
@ in my life i had but one desire
And that one is you, no other will dooooo
I’ve lost all ambition for worldly acclaim,
I just want to be the one you love
Well done. This is an excellent work you have done.
I'm probably the only one that actually likes Superman IV. It's Christopher Reeve as Superman, and in the end, that's all I need for me to declare a great Superman film. Having him in Man of Steel and Justice League would have gotten my butt planted in that seat in the theater.
I read was 'Superman a spy' (thanks Scott on the book suggestion) it's kinda cool to see Scott referencing the main title giving story in the video
Bingo bango bongo I don't wanna live in the Congo ohnononon
oh yeah yeah
It's actually I don't want to leave the Congo.
The song is all about how Civilization sucks because of things like the atom bomb.
It’s u again
Bruh I love you
Bro, you ARE an SCP...
At the beginning of the Justice League show Superman disarms all the world’s weaponry
(Then aliens attack the Justice League appears etc.)
Also, I think it would be cool if you made a video about what elements Metamorpho the Element Man’s body is made of
Amazing video as always, you are an inspiration to me Scott. Keep up the good work!
This is amazingly well done!
Beautiful video as always man
Thank you!
NerdSync
No need for thanks, honestly, i should thank you for making this videos in the first place
All of the quality of this video made me sit through all the commercials.
Well done. 👍
was waiting for you to finish that watchmen joke and it was worth it great video dude
"This is a dick measuring joke!" Yes it most certainly is. Love the videos, Scott!
Always love the long form videos scott
Duck and cover.
1. In school were told to duck under those heavy wood desk.
2. The schools were brick and ceramics. Windows open north, south, east, and west.
3. Blast, flash, instance cremation. So schools would have death zones, think about it.I walked home on that day in October from Riley Elm, thru the whyt section to my home, made two sandwich, prayed and went to bed.
I really like this style of presenting.
The make up and set dressing all frame the video essay brilliantly and I like your humorous acting talent.
Thank you.
Great piece, very interesting and well presented video.
Thanks so much!
