What I really like about Robins linguistic musings is how the rest of the team adopts his vocabulary over time showing how close they all are becoming. Also really love it when other characters say "Hello, Megan!"
I wish this running gag was kept in foreign dubs of the show. Underwhelmed and overwhelmed were translated in Brazilian portuguese to "decepcionado" and "emocionado", leading Robin to say "nado" (which is not a real world) as our version of whelmed. It was nice, but it only lasted for the first episode and every time Dick says "whelmed" through the course of the show, the translators used an actual world, probably not aware that it was a running gag.
Yeah, same in Romanian. Robin says something along the lines of "you're overwhelmed, freeze was not overwhelmed, why isn't anybody ever normal?". Red arrows had it even worse, in the fight with Icicle jr, he says something like "I hope this little fun won't do him any harm", like he cared about him. And when arrow asks him about being anxious to enter the inner sanctum, he just says "can't wait" instead of "born that way", throwing any foreshadowing out the window. God, I hate dubs.
@@nirast2561 See that's why I generally prefer to watch movies, shows and stuff in it's original language first so I can catch the jokes and word plays and them I'll watch it dubbed in my language. There are shows like BBC's Sherlock that are heavy on word play and usually take waaaay longer to get dubbed here because of stuff like that.
I've always wondered about the difficulty of this stuff. Pokemon is particularly difficult for it as every Pokemon's name has like 3 layers of pun and reference. Snorlax for example is a combination of the words snore and relax. Those two words combined instantly give you an idea of the Pokemon's personality, the word relax gives you the idea that it's pretty laid back and chilled, but the word snore implies that laid back attitude is annoying to others and causes problems. They have to someone translate that same meaning into countless languages by combining two words into new words? Must be hard as hell.

It would also be in character for him, since he's Batman's kid and all. Batman has been depicted for the last 40 years as being incredibly literal with his "war on crime", down to his terminology. "Exfiltrate" is used by the military.

Love Young Justice and especially Robin in it. It explores the backstories of all of these characters in such interesting ways and really conveys the relationships between them. It's essentially rehashed Teen Titans. Which makes sense since that's exactly what it is, the old Teen Titans under a new name.

Disaster - a bad event. Dis- meaning "a negation" and aster meaning "star" - literally a bad star. So the opposite of "disaster" would indeed, be "aster".
It's the same sort of logic behind the term "star-crossed". When Shakespeare used that in Romeo and Juliet, he meant that the stars were cross with them. Destiny was angry at them. The term "disaster" is the same, implying that the terrible event was out of anyone's control. I remember learning this a long time ago from a Vsauce video.
Holy crap this is one of my favorite videos from you wonderful nerd! As an English teacher (to people who don't speak English), this kind of thing is exactly what spices up my classes, and you can bet your hiney I'm gonna be using it this next semester with my advanced classes!! Now here's a fun fact: this kind of "words expressing a feeling" is not universal! As far as I can tell, the Brazilian Portuguese language does not have this kind of feeling behind words, and expressions that bring out this extra je ne sais quoi, are ridiculed by Brazilian linguists for their redundancy! In general, Brazilian portuguese is much more of a descriptive language than English, and that is one of the big reasons why so many people who reach English fluency here have a hard time expressing themselves in their mother language! Portuguese is about definitions. English is about feelings! (Don't take my word as gospel. I have not conducted any studies. The ideas expressed in this comment are merely based on observations, not hard facts 😉👍)
Munjee Syed to write well in said language and to learn techniques to figure out the meanings of words you haven’t heard before. After all, you don’t come out the womb with your native language’s dictionary memorized. Ooh and also most of the English classes when I was in school were also dedicated to reading and understanding novels.

English has two in- prefixes. One means "not", and the other means "into." To avoid confusion (can this burst into flames, or will it not?), the prefix was eventually dropped, and people now use flammable.
"Stand up" seems like a redundant statement too. How else would you stand? Except, of course, that there's also "stand down". That... just... what? How? I mean, "Step down" makes sense. But "Stand down"? What, were you hovering before?

You cover a lot of things about superheroes that aren’t explained into much depth by the writers and so I wanted to ask you something. How does Superman hide his cape? Or his boots? I know that in the New 52 his suit would like expand and the cape would materialize or something idk how to describe it. But I’m talking here about the classic suit. I’ve looked it up and couldn’t find anything except for a guy who said in comicvine that he could fold the cape? Even if his information was reliable what about his boots? Are they extremely thin so that they could fit inside his shoes? Everyone tells me “it’s comic book don’t think about it” but this is what keeps me up at night

Jorge That super-suit is made of Kryptonian fabrics, salvaged by his adopted parents (the Kents) from Kal-El's spaceship. The material has some very advanced properties, such as being nearly indestructible, and appears to have some sort of adaptability function as well. The billowy cape and boots, while obviously being thick and substantive when Superman is in hero costume, are able to fold and compress away into unnoticeable thicknesses when Superman is hiding them under his civilian persona's usual business attire. Note that Superman, since he has super-speed as one of his abilities, isn't significantly hampered by those instances when he has to wear t-shirts, gym shorts, bathing trunks or other apparel that wouldn't conceal his super-suit - he can simply conceal the suit "nearby" (i.e., somewhere within a few miles of his current location) and move so fast he's unseen to retrieve it and change into costume.

There is an alternative usage of "irregardless" in the Southern US where it is used as a finality of a conversation. Like person A makes a point, person B argues "Regardless, blah blah blah"; person A argues with B's retort, person B follows with an "Irregardless, blah blah blah" to emphasize more concertedly the lack of regard. It's not exactly a correct usage, and it's highly regional, but it happens. I'm kind of a new subscriber. I spent the majority of my first winter break abroad at grad school by binging almost the entirety of the channel chronologically. I dig it. I basically made notes to my self about topics you'd reference. But, it also led me to wonder about a billion topics along the way. Like, is there a connection between between Batman's suit in BvS, the Dark Knight . . . and *Batman versus Predator*? Since we're tired of origins, should Batman movies already presuppose the entirety of the Bat-family's existence, there thereby hitting every demographic point fo relatability with the audience? How could X-titles shift their focus, if once a metaphor for civil rights, to better match the base of modern-day socio-political struggles? That stuff and, like, a ton more questions. But, then again, I assumed 6 years ago that Rusty Venture and The Monarch were brothers, so what do I know about theories? Lol Anyway, I like the vids; keep em up!

Informative and entertaining, Scott! It's always interesting when certain elements of a language evolve, especially through errors of structure or meaning. Even when it is pointed out that what was spoken or written is incorrect - according to the rules of the language - many people will continue to use the language in the way that they desire. Some errors become so common that eventually they become accepted as proper. This has given the English language numerous examples of alternate spellings, alternate pronunciations, and multiple meanings of words.
The synonymous word pair I really like is “flammable” and “inflammable,” since they both technically mean able to catch fire, but “inflammable” feels like it should mean fire-proof.
Ran into this same question with my wife in high school. I actually remember us asking our English prof, him stopping class and then when he looked in the dictionary (pre cell phone era) the class had and found that it said "whelmed: overwhelmed," we used the word whelmed for the rest of the school year for suscinctness of language.

Disaster is actually really interesting! "Aster" is from a root meaning "star", so a dis-"aster" is basically "hey dudes the sun fucked up we are in TROUBLE". And "Aster" would be very good indeed for a Kryptonian-adjacent such as superboy!

I would definitely recommend the book "Word by Word" by Kory Stamper; there's an entire chapter dedicated to "irregardless" (I assumed your use was intentional, and it made me chuckle.). I always liked Robin making whelmed a thing and his other wordplay because it's a clear character moment. He is both an intelligent person and also a teenager finding himself, he is going against the grain and and questioning something so integral as language. He won't accept something as it just is and instead tried to make things different. I'm sure I'm reading into this more than the creators ever did, but it kind of mirrors him striking out on his own and becoming Nightwing, because he doesn't need to be just an prefix or suffix of Batman and can be his word alone. It's why Young Justice S1 Robin is my favorite character in that show, because he is growing into his own person as both a human and a superhero leader from little things like whelmed to later solving global crisis events.
i actually looked up overwhelmed when i first watched the young justice and i found the definition to be 'to be over filled' so i took robin's whelm to mean 'to be filled with something'(ex:emotions, intellect). so i think i might have misunderstood some of his uses of the word but i still really enjoyed it and this video explaining about whelmed.

Yea that’s the sucky thing about dubs. Things often aren’t translated properly and sometimes don’t capture the context of the dialogue or situation

In general, Brazilian portuguese is much more of a descriptive language than English, and that is one of the big reasons why so many people who reach English fluency here have a hard time expressing themselves in their mother language! Portuguese is about definitions. English is about feelings!

Munjee Syed to write well in said language and to learn techniques to figure out the meanings of words you haven’t heard before. After all, you don’t come out the womb with your native language’s dictionary memorized.
Ooh and also most of the English classes when I was in school were also dedicated to reading and understanding novels.

English has two in- prefixes. One means "not", and the other means "into." To avoid confusion (can this burst into flames, or will it not?), the prefix was eventually dropped, and people now use flammable.

Hello Scott! Or do you prefer Mr. Niswander since I’m a complete stranger to you? Never mind I have a question that may be even worthy a video. You cover a lot of things about superheroes that aren’t explained into much depth by the writers and so I wanted to ask you something. How does Superman hide his cape? Or his boots? I know that in the New 52 his suit would like expand and the cape would materialize or something idk how to describe it. But I’m talking here about the classic suit. I’ve looked it up and couldn’t find anything except for a guy who said in comicvine that he could fold the cape? Even if his information was reliable what about his boots? Are they extremely thin so that they could fit inside his shoes? Everyone tells me “it’s comic book don’t think about it” but this is what keeps me up at night

The billowy cape and boots, while obviously being thick and substantive when Superman is in hero costume, are able to fold and compress away into unnoticeable thicknesses when Superman is hiding them under his civilian persona's usual business attire.
Note that Superman, since he has super-speed as one of his abilities, isn't significantly hampered by those instances when he has to wear t-shirts, gym shorts, bathing trunks or other apparel that wouldn't conceal his super-suit - he can simply conceal the suit "nearby" (i.e., somewhere within a few miles of his current location) and move so fast he's unseen to retrieve it and change into costume.

I'm going to guess not too long ago it actually was "Sisther" but the spelling changed over time. After all, way back when, english never had standard spelling and people spelled words based on what they thought it sounded most like. The name Esther can be spelled Ester too...

Don’t worry man this is really interesting. You managed to take my two favorite things, young justice and language, and put them into one thing and for that I am eternally great full. Keep making awesome videos and never stop because you’re good at what you do.
There is an alternative usage of "irregardless" in the Southern US where it is used as a finality of a conversation. Like person A makes a point, person B argues "Regardless, blah blah blah"; person A argues with B's retort, person B follows with an "Irregardless, blah blah blah" to emphasize more concertedly the lack of regard. It's not exactly a correct usage, and it's highly regional, but it happens.
I'm kind of a new subscriber. I spent the majority of my first winter break abroad at grad school by binging almost the entirety of the channel chronologically. I dig it. I basically made notes to my self about topics you'd reference. But, it also led me to wonder about a billion topics along the way. Like, is there a connection between between Batman's suit in BvS, the Dark Knight . . . and *Batman versus Predator*? Since we're tired of origins, should Batman movies already presuppose the entirety of the Bat-family's existence, there thereby hitting every demographic point fo relatability with the audience? How could X-titles shift their focus, if once a metaphor for civil rights, to better match the base of modern-day socio-political struggles? That stuff and, like, a ton more questions.
But, then again, I assumed 6 years ago that Rusty Venture and The Monarch were brothers, so what do I know about theories? Lol

Informative and entertaining, Scott! It's always interesting when certain elements of a language evolve, especially through errors of structure or meaning. Even when it is pointed out that what was spoken or written is incorrect - according to the rules of the language - many people will continue to use the language in the way that they desire. Some errors become so common that eventually they become accepted as proper. This has given the English language numerous examples of alternate spellings, alternate pronunciations, and multiple meanings of words.
The synonymous word pair I really like is “flammable” and “inflammable,” since they both technically mean able to catch fire, but “inflammable” feels like it should mean fire-proof.

Ran into this same question with my wife in high school. I actually remember us asking our English prof, him stopping class and then when he looked in the dictionary (pre cell phone era) the class had and found that it said "whelmed: overwhelmed," we used the word whelmed for the rest of the school year for suscinctness of language.

Disaster is actually really interesting! "Aster" is from a root meaning "star", so a dis-"aster" is basically "hey dudes the sun fucked up we are in TROUBLE". And "Aster" would be very good indeed for a Kryptonian-adjacent such as superboy!

I always liked Robin making whelmed a thing and his other wordplay because it's a clear character moment. He is both an intelligent person and also a teenager finding himself, he is going against the grain and and questioning something so integral as language. He won't accept something as it just is and instead tried to make things different. I'm sure I'm reading into this more than the creators ever did, but it kind of mirrors him striking out on his own and becoming Nightwing, because he doesn't need to be just an prefix or suffix of Batman and can be his word alone. It's why Young Justice S1 Robin is my favorite character in that show, because he is growing into his own person as both a human and a superhero leader from little things like whelmed to later solving global crisis events.
i actually looked up overwhelmed when i first watched the young justice and i found the definition to be 'to be over filled' so i took robin's whelm to mean 'to be filled with something'(ex:emotions, intellect). so i think i might have misunderstood some of his uses of the word but i still really enjoyed it and this video explaining about whelmed.
