- We have shown you the new Kia Niro review and today we get to show you what all EV Niro drives are like. The new Kia Niro is powered by a 150kW electric motor turning the front wheels. And I was very surprised by how responsive it felt. The new Kia Niro felt even quicker than Kia EV6 long-range model with a single motor. Wish it didn’t rain, but we still checked the handling capability of this new Kia Niro EV model. So, let’s dive in and see what’s so different about this Kia Niro EV.

You are so right I'm coming around to it also it's different why buy a car that's the same old boring solid body car this is kind of hot it all depends on the colors
A few corrections. Kia EV6 have 800V system. Kia Niro EV (both generations) have 400V. EV6 can charge around 240kW at peak speed, and Niro EV at around 75kW. Niro EV gen 2 have different battery configuration, which gives higher chargingspeed over all... but 75kW top speed is not impressive by 2023.
"not impressive" is a HUGE understatement. This is the only reason as to why people shouldn't even consider buying this car.
@@raymondz595 This car is good for me, who only drive 120-200 km a day and a few times in a year go for longer trips. I charge my car mostly at home, so I don't care it's not 100kwh or 150kwh, no matter at all.
@@Xewo7777 this is an semi affordable EV, it suppose to be the kind of EV that most people should be able to afford. 90% of the population in Sweden live in Apartments (number is even higher in other countries) because of that, charging at home isn't really an option. So what's good for you isn't really relevant...
@@raymondz595 In my country who drives an electric car mostly charging at home, more than 70% of the owners.(with solar systems) So for me relevant. But I get it what you are said. The EV market not for the 90% of the population, sadly and because of the probelms what you can find in the car industry the EV's won't be affordable in short term, even the used ones are horribly expensive. Most of the affodable electric cars charging times are slow. But somehow have to start, the EV market it's like a startup. We have to support that. Of course this is my own opinion.

The quick shots of cream interior looked great,but I am a sucker for cream interior,classy. The wrap around dash's of Kia are do much better than the slab computer screens, so much easier to read.

Great video - you promised and delivered! I love the interior but find the exterior a bit too much for me. Very happy with my current 2019 Niro EV and will use that for the next several years. Very surprised you found this more responsive than the single motor EV6, wouldn’t have thought this would be that way compared to RWD.

The EV6 RWD motor is 167 HP with a bigger, heavier car, and the Niro is 201 HP. I felt that the EV6 RWD looked to be under-powered compared to the Niro. The AWD is 320 HP.

I agree with you about changing port, i would say they only changes they can make is front to keep the same tools on the production line where Phev and petrol version are produced to have high volume and low cost

Hello Marc. The charge port is high enough that it would take a major collision to cause damage to the charge port. The Kia EV6 has the charge port on the right (driver's side in Ireland) but Teslas have it on the left. This means using a Tesla SuperCharger, as they open them to non-Tesla vehicles in Europe, will be difficult. With the Niro EV, it's less of an issue, though you will have to pull into a SuperCharger spot instead of backing in. I personally find it much more comfortable for everyday use. I owned an i-MiEV (charger on right side for 240V and charger on the left side for CHaDeMO), and having those chargers on the side were difficult to get to in smaller garages. My LEAF and Niro EV (2019 model) have it in the front and I much prefer it there for real-world situations.
My wife bought the Kia eNiro in 2020 and it's a pleasure to drive, we have installed a 7kW home charger that covers most of our charging needs except when we take road trip Geneva-Nice ~600km where we now use Ionity and Tesla chargers (France). Next trip will be testing out the "Bonnet" -app which will further decrease charging costs at IONITY.
I had my eyes on the EV6 myself but with the current situation in the world the prices are climbing and availability decreasing. I also start to think that the EV6 might be a little bit to big for me real needs as I mostly anyway just commute to work. The new NiroEv starts to look more and more as a contender. Since charging on fastchargers have actually decreased by roughly 11mins from 10-80% charging between the new vs old Niro it makes it more attractive for me. Efficience of the Niro's have always been quite good and maybe a heatpump/preheating will help with cold weather-worries of mine.
What do you think about the upcoming EV4, will it be basically a revamped "eNiro", similar size on an 800V eGMP -platform with a slightly larger battery and faster charging? Could it be what I am waiting for?
When will we see KIA implementing Solid state batteries?

Great initial review. I like the size of the Niro EV better than the EV6, IONIQ 5, and ID.4. The only thing I don't like is the slow DC fast charging rate. But if the U.S. price is low enough, I'd consider buying one.
You might want to consider too the Genesis GV60 if after something a little more diminutive with length at 4515mm compared to 4695/4680mm of Kia EV6. (Kia Nero EV is 4420mm in length)

Hi James. Compared to Kia EV6 and Ioniq 5 single motor, Kia Niro EV is more responsive, feels lighter and space wise not bad either. But price wise Kia EV6 and Niro EV are very similar in the starting price zone, but as it goes up, Kia EV6 will be much more expensive.

With the high bar set by the new GMP platform, the older models may lose some of their relative appeal if the price is similar, but as you noted some trims are much more expensive, and the older models may be more widely available with much shorter wait times.
Charlie this car looks very nice but not crazy about that two tone look. . My 2019 Kia Niro hybrid is too slow so this would be an upgrade. i just wish Kia would make an all electric Kia Sportage, that would be the perfect vehicle.
Great video as usual. Really like the new Niro EV for 23, that black bar on the C pillar sides needs to go, but for people that don't need AWD and want a more mainstream looking EV this is a home run. Charging port is in a bad spot, almost all makes use side ports either front or back.

The Niro looks really nice. But wish the range was better. It really needs 300 mile range. Which they would use solid state battery. Also please show more of gauge. Cluster. I saw another youtube channel where the gauge cluster looked different and it had a shifter. The gauge cluster had. (0. 00) set up.

You all are crazy to get an EV. I have a Kia Niro FE hybrid. Been driviing it since 2019 and I love this car. For 10 gallons of gas I get 560 miles per tank @ 10% aggressive driving. Talk about no hassle. Fill it up once a month and then just drive it. Okay I can't accelerate like a Cheetah but Idon't drive a car for the thrills. More interested in reliability and durability and I can easily see myself in my hybrid for the next 10 years. My fuel costs at $5 a gallon for one year is around $500 bucks.
Hybrid are great, too. But as we get more range, i think it will be all EV soon.
Looks a nice car and can see a lot of the EV6 in it. Not for me (I am due my EV6 AWD in a few weeks) but can see it doing really well. DC charge speed is the only real issue I see with it, very surprised they haven't gone up to 100+.

Well, 2023 EV is based on the all new Kia Niro.
I have first gen Kia Niro EV. This second gen Kia Niro EV, I like the new body design/ exterior looks over EV6. I also prefer matching colour for C pillar (one tone colour for car)... EV6 looks like sedan, I prefer hatchback/SUV look of Niro EV, though I wish it had faster DC charging and bigger battery.

Well, I think it is quite okay for the class. Nicely isolated from the bottom, but you can hear more noise coming from the A pillar.
Any idea if the front windshield of the ev is heated like the new sportage ..and does it have a heat pump..that's a must in canada
Yes, it's got heat pump, but i don't think Niro come with heated front wind shield.
I think they could have done more with this update, faster charging & improved efficiency for example. I’ve seen one at a launch event and it’s a nice car. In the uk we get piano black over the wheel arches, which i cam see getting ruined through washing

Front charging is nice when at Tesla Supercharger, but not in a cold snowy Norwegian winter. Is the outside V2L 3,4 kWh as EV6 and HI5?
Yes, V2L is all same. But i believe it was 3.5kWh.
I felt Hyundai Kona was a bit unstable at high speeds when I test drove it, good to hear that the new Niro EV is better. Dual engine EV6 was also very stable.
Um... Not this Niro EV. It feels quite stable.
The torque steer on a Niro EV FWD is not nice from a standing start, also wheel spin if you use Sport Mode. 2019 Niro EV -No issues on the highway at 120 km/H, keeping up with the other traffic., felt solid with cross winds etc. The Niro is built using the Ioniq EV frame which is larger that the Kona's , perhaps that was the difference.
They don't have engines
Here in the U.S. the PHEV Sportage only has adaptive cruise control with stop and go in the top trim line which is frustrating. Hoping the new Niro has it in at least the mid trim. Did you get any details on that?

How's road noise? Some reviews have suggested road noise in to the cabin is quite loud. Also, can you turn off lane departure warning ?
I would say quite nice for the class. Of course it is not Genesis level. But nicely isolated. Yes, you can turn off the lane departure warning or mitigation.

Yes, new Kia Niro is looking very nice!
In the UK the top model is £42,000. Plus at this price we get Zero rebate from the government. So I would be looking at the EV6. As the EV6 was a "ground up" designed EV and not an adapted ICE car. Biggest issue for me is the lane assist is very intrusive and currently no obvious way of keeping it switched off. According to testers it needs switching off every time the car is started.

I gather that it being automatically switched on is part of the NCAP safety rating system. However it can be switched off, but means a trip through the options on the screen. Perhaps they could have some user defined shortcuts so that users can turn on/off things like that with fewer presses.

You probably never got to test it because you didn't have it that long but do you know if the 4 variant (UK name for top spec model with the sun roof) has the auto dip headlights? The previous model had it in the top spec model, but there is no mention of this feature in the new model.

Charlie do you know if you can get any of the models without the contrasting color? For example :can you. Get just a solid EV in white or black with out the contrast strip on the back? Also I think it would have been better to place the charging port on the side. I live in Florida and most of our accidents happen in the front end. People hitting animals like wild hogs and deer's and old folks stopping short in front of you.

I really like the way the blue with the black contrast panel looks. I would have to go with the hybrid so I would not have to try to find a charger since I live in an apartment without a garage. EV's are pretty much designed for people who live in the suburbs or in expensive towers. Did Hyundai ever create a similar car to the Niro hybrid, I have not noticed it on the North American website?
No, pretty sure not - Hyundai Kona electric is same/similar platform and software, but more the size of Kia Soul. Their original Ioniq (0?!!) is limited in having a boot only, rather than a hatch. But it only has smaller battery.

Thanks Charlie...interesting Kia Globally must have had a press freeze on until a certain date as the EU reviewers only just were able to do a similar first drive event like you have. I personally love the two-tone and have loved this car since it was launched about a month ago now if not longer. This is my #1 on my shortlist so far the EV6 is too expensive but also there won't be anymore stock until 2025 in Australia from what Kia have said a grand total of 600 cars for the entire country until then.
Does the front drivers & passenger windows have double glazing? Nice to see real-world figures as well at 405km that will be so weird after having had a 250km(in summer) Ioniq 28 but still a couple years yet before my lease expires. Been waiting figured you would have had press cars though by now being the home turf for Kia.

@@AsianPetrolhead The EV6 is here but only in VERY limited quantities, ie: 600, until 2025. I won't fit in it anyway as I've sat in the Ioniq 5 and my head rubs the roof so the EV6 definitely will. The Niro EV on the other hand I've driven the hybrid version of the older gen model and no issue at all front seat or back seat and easier to get into and out of as well. I'm so waiting on this car to arrive to test drive it and being the Niro EV should have better supply than the EV6.
The first drive review I saw was the Electrifying review, then Carwow then Jonny Smith who had the longest review so far. Waiting on the full test regime from Bjorn on the Norwegian spec.
I know this is another topic, but is it possible to try RoboRide in Seoul ? With technology based on Ioniq 5 with autonomy level 4. Is it already usable by the public or is it just a marketing gimmick?

As a Kia tech I like the Niro . The ev6 is untested yet. Lots of little issues so far.

I've asked about the new niro ev at my kia dealership and the top trim will cost 55k$ 🇨🇦. That's almost like the GT- 1 AWD EV6. And delivery time is a year from today. That's crazy.
Yes, staring price there isn't much gap between EV6 and Niro EV, but when you do start loading EV6, it gets much more expensive.
The dealership gave me 14 month wait time for EV6 and about six months for Niro EV LX, but this was in Finland and I guess the cars will be built in Kia's Slovakia factory.
I had a 2019 Niro EV SX Touring (Canada) and traded in on the AWD EV6 gt line 2 (200 preorders for Canada) . I would not trade the Niro in for the EV6 RWD model or the new Niro EV when it gets here. Not sure if RWD VS FWD is enough reason to change. Not enough improvement over my 2019. My ev6 has all the driver tech improvements and like the additional cameras and blind spot display. We have this curious remote to move the car backwards and forwards for parking but no actual assisted parking( Edit -It does parking assist -just to lazy too find out until I saw a TH-cam demonstrating it. ) . In Canada all the kia BEV models are sold before they get to the dealer, with a long wait for factory orders. Just turn on sport mode on a AWD!

Headroom looks tight for a tall man like myself. 6ft 5 and wondering if moonroof is gonna be a problem.

How would you compare the power of the 2023 model to the 2022? I test drove a 2022 and enjoyed how zippy it is, however I've heard that the 2023 has a significant torque decrease and feels slower.
Power wise both are very similar. But what i noticing is that the new one puts power down better.

I was saying that it is quite for the class. b/c it had battery on the bottom, it is quite nicely isolated from the bottom, but you can hear more noise coming from the side. But I still think it's pretty nice for the class.

base price wise not much, but if you add dual motor and many options, EV6 will be much more expensive.

the kia niro ev 2023 look good but for canadian winter a odered a new kia ev6 awd better range, more space, and its all wheels drives. for the winter condition this is the best. but im looking the difference of the price when its arrive.
Yes, if you need AWD then Kia EV6 would be better.
