I'd just like to add, Chris Turner is the most focused drummer I've ever had the privilege of working with. He is intense in every sense of the word. His focus and skill is incredible and I believe this shows in this drum-through. We spent the best part of two days making sure the drums were sounding and feeling the way needed to, and how you hear them on this video is how they were acoustically. They have not been tampered with, and Chris played all of these parts from start to finish. I am a drummer with over 21 years of experience, and my experience in tuning and setting up along with Chris's amazing skills produced what you can hear on this video. The quality of the audio is down to the Studio and sound production team at Summerfield Recording Studio's in Birmingham. Dan Coley's engineering and studio setup skills, and the phenomenal studio built by Phillip Croft, are all responsible for the audio quality. I will always be proud of my involvement with this production, and will always regard Chris Turner as one of the most thorough and talented artists I have ever known. He is a credit to the drumming community worldwide, and his drumming skills and sheer professionalism I hope will earn him recognition amongst some of the drumming royalty of today's modern drummers. I also forgot to mention that he is a real gentleman and never once carried any adverse-ego around with him. Thanks for this video Chris. I look forward to many more.
Chris 'Drumdog' Croft well he's blown me totally away man! Talk about raising the bar!! I'm one of the "Old Guard" so when I see vids like this it gives me hope that There are and will be amazing drummers one upping one another till the day I die!
He's sick nasty...on a whole other galaxy compared to most. No triggers raw power, true perfectionist and strives to write complex parts for the tracks instead of cutting corners to just fill his part on the track. Plus he kicks harder than a kangaroo, MFer literally lifts off the throne. Stupid dynamic cymbal action... OAA wouldn't be SHIT without Chris.
Cb Epyon like. Aside from the "normal" time keeping snare hits like one and TWO and three and FOUR... The extra little accentuating "rippa rap-tap-taps" that tend to be quieter and just for a little extra musicality are sometimes referred to as "ghost snare"
Actually that's ridiculous. Nobody can go this long just blinking once. That's humanly impossible. So, yeah. I checked. Thoroughly. He blinked a lot more than once! How many times, you ask? Oh, I'll tell you. It's a huge fucking number more than once. It's like, like 100% more! Yes, you heard me. He blinked not once, not twice, but... no it's twice, actually, but nevermind!! It's not once, so you are wrong and should be punished by the gods of the internets. Go get him, boys.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Most songs by other bands have some sort of set structure and pattern... How the hell do you remember all of that when it's so all over the place? I'm in awe of this guy's talent right now.
At first, it was Chris Turner's drumming alone that got me into Oceans Ate Alaska, but then when I listened to them as a whole instead of thinking regarding singularity, and I must say, the combination of talents each of the band members make one hell of a good sound!! Keep rocking Oceans Ate Alaska!!
The cool thing is that he's playing an even 130 BPM throughout the entire song. How? By keeping the time with the cymbals. listen closely. He IS counting a one two three four, but with the cymbals.
Saw this band when they toured with The Word Alive and spoke to this guy after the show, not only is he impeccable live but he's a friendly guy too, really humble. If you get the chance go see them just for him!
I love your derp faces too dude! the whole thing was awesome i actually couldnt hear alot of the stuff in the actual song than what you did in the video so i was just extremely impressed! Keep up the good work dude!
Absolutely insane to watch this playthrough after just finishing the Hikari playthroughs. His set became a lot bigger between this moment and the writing of Hikari. wow. Put away one snare for 3 toms, and added 4 more cymbals I believe. Absolutely insane.
Bro, I watch this video at least once a month to see where I'm trying to get to. I love oceans and your drumming. Keel it up, looking forward to a new album soon.
Focus is everything. And to achieve that is a whole different story. Look at him. He is paying attention to everything he hits. He is so focused. Remembering parts becomes a joke at this level. It’s all about the accents and hitting the notes right. I mean, to achieve this level of focus and accuracy takes immense practice (and a tiny little bit of skill)
This guy is basically a drum machine some guitarist would write for their Metalcore track that seems impossible to play... but he can play it lool. Insane.
Honestly, I heard the band and just thought it was another new-age Metalcore band polished to the brim with little talent but after watching this I might have to give them another chance. Absolutely phenomenal drum work
I've said it before, Chris is a proper beast! And a real nice guy, I got to talk to him last year after a gig in Birmingham and he was very cool. My sister has a photo with him, if I knew they were going to blow up like they had I would of also...
He looks stiff, but really its him being absolutely impeccable, not wasting one single motion. In other words, he played this as efficient as possible. He doesn't even look like hes tired afterwards.
To answer the original question, it's because of muscle memory. Dude has his "soul" so to speak into his drumming. Look up Planetary Duality Drum Cam. If muscle memory could be defined by a video that ones it.
if you dont think the fill at 0:50 is tasty. i dont know what kind of drums you play. now i always hear that fill over the vocals when i listen to the album
Just saw him play live this month in Denver. phenomenally flawless, I would love to try to cover one of their songs on drums but holy hell its gonna be hard.
Phillip Kenyon while it is mostly 4/4, the sheet music for his actual drum strokes would be insane, your response made it sound like he's playing iron maiden, same could be said "ehh 4/4 bla bla bla" but two extremely different styles and intensities
dylanandstuff jessie luna ***** trinirocker101 I have actually transcribed the part he played here, down to the improvised solos. If you sign up (on my website), you can enjoy it all for free.
In the comments people are talking about "How does he remember the pattern" personally, I play off impulse, if your heart is really in it and you play the "pattern" enough to strengthen the tune, you play it automatically and extremely easily. If you are really in the moment you can just play it.
LiamsMusic78 have? really dude? I can name at least 10 drummers who don't have to look like him but still rip, maybe even harder. so much curse words for such a simple thought. you sound stupid as hell
I saw these guys live with Born of Osiris recently. Now, I'm not sure if this dude needed to work out to play this style or if that's just the result, but dude is fucking SHREDDED. Like he could rip your arms off shredded.
Dude your drumming is super interesting! ,I personally wouldn't have my cymbals that low but hey, its whatever you like man haha And your use of ghost notes is astounding and I think it adds a much more musical and dynamic approach to this style of music instead of the computer like grooves haha when you change the subdivisions from 16ths to triplets at 0:50 through out that groove, idk, it just sounds freaking amazing and musical to be, and its a breath of fresh air honestly haha would love to see you use this type of approach in an actual mix that is released.
What angers me so much is the actual song does him no justice, you can not appreciate what he truly does that's what angers me Especially high horse Those little swift nonchalant hits he dies sends me into a frenzy Pure amazement this guy I just wish the actual recordings caught these hits better
I feel like this is one of the few that luke couldn't cover to its entirety. BUT I also feel as if luke does certain things, or covers certain things that Chris might not be able to do as well as Luke.

Love that it's actual drum audio and not a dub. This fella has ninjetta like chops
He's sick nasty...on a whole other galaxy compared to most. OAA wouldn't be SHIT without Chris.
He looks so happy! He's like: "OMG I'M PLAYING THE DRUMS OMGOMGOMGOM!!! YAY!"
lol dude! :D
All drummers are that happy;p
+Vic Vandamme ahahahahaha
Vic Vandamme aHahahahhahahahahah you’re right
Hahaha
Oceans Ate Alaska, you can't fool me. This guy was brought from the future to teach us humans how to play drums like a fucking beast wasn't him?
See, people think his name is Chris but his name is actually oceans... And he got to be as good as he did because he literally ate Alaska
i will never, EVER get sick of this! please recognize this drummer for his hard work and dedication. incredible.
He puts fills inside fills.
In terms of albums, entire songs are just fills for this guy
His fills are filled with fills while his mouth is filled with Lemons
@@YankeeDoodleWentToSlam I don't know why but this almost had me in tears 😂
be fills fills with fills
Hahahaha love comments like this hahaha
So much talent in this band!
Chris plays like how guitarists program drums , but with actual artistry behind it. His focus is on another level. So much detail in his playing.
legend has it that he still has his mouth open to this very day.
legend has it that you will watch his next video looking for something to criticize. :)
kwl
fucking a i havent laughed that hard in a while mate thanks
I hadn't noticed until I read your comment, then I couldn't stop laughing for the rest of the video.
I read comments in every video just in case I find a hidden gem like this. You made my day!
Thank god he only added 102938474839392929292 ghost snare hits.
William Walsh hahahahah😂😂😂😂😂😂
What do you mean by ghost snare hits?
Cb Epyon like. Aside from the "normal" time keeping snare hits like one and TWO and three and FOUR...
The extra little accentuating "rippa rap-tap-taps" that tend to be quieter and just for a little extra musicality are sometimes referred to as "ghost snare"
if you listen to the actual recording, i think they fit a little better
way to make an explanation messy...
ghost notes are very quiet notes.
accented notes are very strong notes.
Just when I thought I was getting good at drums, this comes up in my subscriptions and I watch it...
Good thing play guitar instead
Awh.... Now I feel down.... :(
+Ruben Mendez bloob?
+Jordans Monkey Yeah I would feel the same way playing guitar. I would get better then see a kid half my age pull of Hendrix with relative ease.
eluxsus0195684 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm pretty sure he only blinked one time. Dude's in the zone.
No that's just you blinking. Legend has it that this guy never blinked once in his life.
Superkick2925 why ?
Yeah, it's 0:52
Actually that's ridiculous. Nobody can go this long just blinking once. That's humanly impossible. So, yeah. I checked. Thoroughly. He blinked a lot more than once! How many times, you ask? Please someone hug this guy and tell him he is good so just stop getting better the rest of us can't catch up! #sofarbehind # manismachine
Such a great drummer! I love how his drumming face almost makes him look like a robot lol
He has the most interesting style of drumming I've ever seen literally mixes up every beat so the song different every time that's incredible
cocaine's a hell of a drug...
hahah
That's lyrics from an awesome song! :D
dale davis
yeah man..true
I feel like being on any drug would make this harder.
Holy crap... How do he remember everything? This have like 2848 hits lol
I was thinking the exact same thing. Most songs by other bands have some sort of set structure and pattern... How the hell do you remember all of that when it's so all over the place? I'm in awe of this guy's talent right now.
All muscle memory my man. It comes naturally once you're accustomed to your instrument.
I guess it's easier when you yourself made the song but even still it's hard as shit
Ben Mitchell That's why covers are amazing.. they had to learn it for themselves not create it.
ash deas This is a drum play through, meaning that it's the drummer from the band making a video of just the drum track in live performance...
So humble the man calls his play through a 'cover'. All the while being a god damn savage.
Priceless
It would be weird seeing him play a standard rock beat, like 1, 2, 3, 4. He counts alien.
The cool thing is that he's playing an even 130 BPM throughout the entire song. How? By keeping the time with the cymbals. listen closely. He IS counting a one two three four, but with the cymbals.
+Jason Vorhees13 This is true. I was just making a joke actually haha
Hanno Smit Oh... Well then...lol xD
@@mgcorales I've noticed that the cymbals seem to be that "1234" excellent observation
That one single frozen facial expression is just killing me man XD
awesome drumming tho, forreal
He doesn't play this much on the recording. He's just having fun here.
He does. The mixing on the album makes it sound like doesn't.
U're not right... Did u see live plays?... This playthrough its not the same like on record ;)
Oh.....my... God... Please, don't stop playing the drums. That was incredible
His drumming is miles away ahead from anyone i ever heard .So focused. So talented so creative ..so unique. keep up to teaching us GRAND MASTER Chirs !
Haven't seen this much drum talent since Miss May I's first album
Try INFANT ANNIHILATOR'S DRUMMER :)
Infant annihilators drummer is like on crack when he plays. But they are amazing.
infant annihilator's good too, but this is more.. idk technical?? i dont know how to put it, chris turner just has fucking great talent!!!
+John Julao yea they're good but thats a bit more speed drumming vs this being a lot more technical
+MrSkyhippowdon Miss May I? Is that a joke?
Holy- This is insane! Never really listened to these guys, but now I have to just for the drums!
1:58 He doesn't even stop to sneeze. I don't even think he blinked during this--this dude's a machine. I now give up on drums.
Saw this band when they toured with The Word Alive and spoke to this guy after the show, not only is he impeccable live but he's a friendly guy too, really humble. If you get the chance go see them just for him!
How can anyone thumbs down this? Whether you like the music or not, You have to appreciate the skills involved here.
If you put a headphones on, and listen closely
You will notice he does a superfast double kick very often, what a beast
His expression is like "Holy shit I love drums" and it goes to "Fuck yeah I love drums!!!", to just pure focus.
I love your derp faces too dude! the whole thing was awesome i actually couldnt hear alot of the stuff in the actual song than what you did in the video so i was just extremely impressed! Keep up the good work dude!
Saw this guy live at the Northlane Node tour, and had the chance to talk to him, really nice guy, plays super fucking well live!!
That snare control, holy fuck.
i've been waiting for a drum playthrough from him since clocks!
New P90X workout? My calf muscles hurt just watching this.
I love how all over the place these guys make songs its like a post hardcore/metalcore version of dream theater!! love it.
Chris is an absolute machine and that's an understatement 😂
2:19 *Br0000tal* bell combo 🔔
Damn Chris, absolutely stellar performance. I would LOVE to see more, the technicality in this piece is mindblowing man.
Wow, that's really complex and there's so much going on...how does he even remember everything? His style is wicked
Is he robot?!
Seems emotionless but still controls the beat!
I've never heard drumming like this guy before. He's really seemed to forge his own style and it's something to witness 🤘🏼
This is absolutely incredible. Massive props.
So talented, and really expressive. If I had to say what I thought it was conveying it would be unending complexity.
The most insane bad ass drumming ive seen in a long time.
That precise of footwork AND heel toe on DW 5000's? Good lord, I'm disgusted.
Stoked for the Vultures and Sharks cover!
Very interesting having his cymbals nice and low. Solid drumming dude!
it's a thing you like to do if you're taller than average and have long ass arms lol
Oh how tall is he? I'm 6' and I usually have my cymbals at eye level so my long ass arms have room to reach haha
It's interesting to see how every drummer sets their kits up much customizability
I thought the drums were complicated before I saw this and now I know they are goddamn bonkers. Few drummers even dream of being this good.
3:20 to 3:23 holly shit that snare beat hitted me hard
gac3la fucks me up every time
Cooper Sellars amen
0:20 When you're trying to find out the meaning of life but then realize you're shooting a play through video.
Absolutely insane to watch this playthrough after just finishing the Hikari playthroughs. His set became a lot bigger between this moment and the writing of Hikari. wow. Put away one snare for 3 toms, and added 4 more cymbals I believe. Absolutely insane.
I dunno about you guys but I'm in love with those blast beats. So clean!

Honestly man, what unbelievable skill! Thanks for giving me something to aspire to!

very technic, good hits ,awesome coordination and great heel toe technic

I didn't know an octopus had part in eating Alaska?
What an AMAZING PLAYER!!!
Unbelievable!!!
He plays so good but looks so stiff haha
He looks stiff, but really its him being absolutely impeccable, not wasting one single motion. In other words, he played this as efficient as possible. He doesn't even look like hes tired afterwards.
blrsycth I saw him complaining about his back few times. Hope it's something temporary and nothing bad.
I can almost bet it's because he lifts. Maybe drumming added on to the problem though
Agreed. His form is absolutely awful. Still a beast though.
To answer the original question, it's because of muscle memory. Dude has his "soul" so to speak into his drumming. Look up Planetary Duality Drum Cam. If muscle memory could be defined by a video that ones it.
That fucking sneer skill is great Jezz gives me goosebumps how he uses it.

This is the most sporadic drumming I've ever seen lol
Go watch Francesco Paoli. You will be amazed.
Dude Blotted Science is way more sporadic
No where close to blotted science lol
Twan I wasnt say it was close to it. I was saying something sporadic to compare to is blotted science.
And I was agreeing.
WOW! Amazing job Chris! That was INSANE! =D I can't wait to see more of these! Keep up the amazing work! =D
Awesome drum playthrough! He's a fucking beast!
Holy shit that was sick.
3:08 this snare work is fuckin mental...and the super quick double hit on the hihats in the center at 3:18 is just too tight
You guy are really the best drummer 4ever !
I want to see the sheet music of this just so I can see how ridiculous it looks lol
Phillip Kenyon while it is mostly 4/4, the sheet music for his actual drum strokes would be insane, your response made it sound like he's playing iron maiden, same could be said "ehh 4/4 bla bla bla" but two extremely different styles and intensities
Phillip Kenyon This would be retarded written out in sheet music
it'd definitely be impossible to sight read unless you really practice that
trinirocker101 haha would look like scribbles haha
Right????
dylanandstuff jessie luna ***** trinirocker101 I have actually transcribed the part he played here, down to the improvised solos. If you sign up (on my website), you can enjoy it all for free.
Omfggg how the fuck does he look like he never broke a sweat playing this. Its so fluid and he is literal drumming goals idek
0:32 the joy in his face
Best drummer ever for this genre.
Dude is a straight up beast
Beast mode! Sick job Chris! :3
Holy fuck shit how is that possible? I'm in awe right now. My mind can't comprehend what I just saw.
In the comments people are talking about "How does he remember the pattern" personally, I play off impulse, if your heart is really in it and you play the "pattern" enough to strengthen the tune, you play it automatically and extremely easily. If you are really in the moment you can just play it.
One incredible drummer.
HE'S REALLY GOOD. BUT ARE WE NOT GONNA TALK ABOUT HIS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS? HAHAHAHA
+Nolie Kristoffer Bongcas Gabia Probably the weirdest dude I've seen in a looong time! hahaha
+Nolie Kristoffer Bongcas Gabia drummer version of Louis Armstrong lol
lmao best facial expressions ever

Something to be learned here. Amazing.

Blake Beaver I agree :)
fuck, now i gotta buy this record
We want more!
Such chops, many wow
awesome drummers. that's my favorite drummer.
What angers me so much is the actual song does him no justice, you can not appreciate what he truly does that's what angers me
Especially high horse
Those little swift nonchalant hits he dies sends me into a frenzy
Pure amazement this guy
I just wish the actual recordings caught these hits better
I watch this video daily since discovering it last week :)
0:51 he looks like "JESUS DID I JUST PLAY THAT?" He looks so high because of happiness :D
I think Luke Holland can't play this song.. Hahahaha ~
luke holland im convinced can play anything lol
Hanafi Hashim he could fairly easily play it I reckon
Sam Morgan doubt it, this song is more complex than anything I've seen Luke Holland cover or play. he may be capable but it would take him a while.
Sam Morgan Chris turners songs are probably the hardest to play amongst all metal core so that doesn't say Luke isn't great cause he is
I feel like this is one of the few that luke couldn't cover to its entirety. BUT I also feel as if luke does certain things, or covers certain things that Chris might not be able to do as well as Luke.
So fearless finally has someone with talent?
I kid the fearless records xD
He is one of those guys that you cannot bear to see his trash technique but when you close your eyes,it all makes perfect sense
i met him he is so cool and down to earth, idk if i could be so humble if i had those skills ;D
