im a guitar player and i think taking lessons from a sax player stand point in jazz will help me tremendously, hopefully in the future that can happen.
hey bob thank you for another nice vlog ... i live in italy / rome . is there any chance to get you guys to italy / rome ?
Chick me halse ki
You can remember how to pronounce Mihály Csíkszentmihályi by thinking: Me high, Chick sent me high :D
These vlogs are honestly so great Bob, always incredible and practical information.
Thanks, Nick
Cool, your kid no longers gets sad when you play...Progress..and he's enjoying..so cool.t.y.for your vlogs..
Wow this vlog video was just before the world went nuts...love your stuff Bob! 🙂
You are so spot on. I am sharing this VLOG with my students and ordering Atomic Habits. 104%.......I love it. Bob you never fail to teach and inspire me to be a better musician and better instructor. Thanks so much.
Hey Bob , I just found this video now and must say it's one of the best I ve seen!
Thank you 🙏 glad you enjoyed it
O call this the 90/10 system. What I practice is 90% comfortable to play and 10% difficult. Very nice to know that someone has studied this idea. 👏🏻👏🏻
Mad skills - child grabbing sax during rehearsal - continues playing unhindered! Haha :) ...the extra 4% challenge you needed there ;)
Super inspiring and practical advice for developing one's craft. Thanks Bob. It reminds me of some sage wisdom I heard many years ago, "the best teachers are the ones who know the very next step to give to the student."
dude i feel exactly what you talk about. please keep doing these vlogs
Every time i watch these vlogs Bob says i got 4 hours sleep. Bob needs to get more sleep!
Thanks for posting the audio from the second set the other night. I enjoyed it a bunch.
Oh man, this is so great! Thanks for sharing your reading, I just loved the tennis game example! All the best! Cheers from Brazil!
Hey Bob, love the vlog. On the topic of practice, as a perfectionist (or insecure overachiever), how do you balance working on your general skill/weak areas with working on gig music (or projects)? Especially when there's an overwhelming amount of it. Because a "short-run" perfectionist would find it hard not to spend all their time working on music for the next gig, and as a result, would end up neglecting the more long-term method of working on your weak areas. A "long-run" perfectionist would do vice versa and neglect the gig music. How do you find the balance? And if there isn't a realistic balance, which would you recommend, short-run or long-run?
In crossfit they call it threshold training. When the weight is enough to put you in difficulties and train, but not too much so that can cause injuries or do not allow you to make exercise the proper way, with the right technique. (Sorry for my english)
Bob, your videos are always excellent. You are an inspiration!
Appreciate your musical insights as well as book recommendations. Always time well spent watching your vlogs!
Great Vlog. I appreciate the motivation talks related to musical development.
Maaan from 9:52 on it got ugly in a good way. Smooth.
Thanks, Bob! I've entirely find myself lost a motivation. And then came this vlog, and that's a thing that I needed to hear! Will try to find the balance of that 4% difficulty above my today's abilities. Also please consider of coming to Russia! Definitely, we're waiting to have a chance to listen to your band here.
Great advice. Thank you Bob!
This is great Bob. I have been stuck on incorporating some new patterns into my arsenal. Great advice
Now that I’m on winter break I’m planning on hitting the shed A LOT so this vlog came at perfect timing! Thank you Bob!
What takes Kenny Werner an entire book to explain, Bob gets it across concisely in a 10min Vlog! As always 🙏
I rather think Bob describes how challenging your pratice routine should be to get in the flow ("104% percent of your current abilities - although it's hard to quantify in the real world") while kenny explains how to really get to the 104%.
@@aaronheckscher1231 Yep that true...I guess I just interpreted the vlog a bit different! Kenny is great...play with him in a work shop a few years ago! There was an element to Kenny not eluding to you need to bust your ass for years before flow can be reached! At least that's what I took from it anyway!
@@aaronheckscher1231 I honestly didn't think Kenny explained how to get to the state of flow as concisely which is what I guess I prefer...time is money and all that haha!
Great stuff as usual Bob ! I also started collecting ideas from books and studies for my students. Goldilocks rule reminds me of Anders Ericssons deliberate practice that also takes place 'right on the edge of their current abilities', which happens to be the sweet spot for the biggest improvement.
Thank you so much for giving this to all of us, you are such an inspiration!
Its 1:50 am here in Brazil and im watching you motivating me. Thanks man, u liked a stories of my Instagram 2 days ago and i almost get crazy kkkk i hope one day i can see u and take a photo!
Yo bob I just wanna to ask how's your day been and mine has been good
I LOVE your book recommendations, Bob! Gotta pick up "Atomic Habits" soon. Also, so cute how your son's sitting on your lap while you jam away on the sax. Now THAT's what I call multi-tasking! :)
I believe it‘s a very personal decision where your sweet spot between predictability and surprise really is - anybody is going to choose that very differently, I mean.
So patient with your son. Pretty cool.
spot on mate !!
I would strongly recommend David Goggins book. He has an amazing view on breaking barriers
I loved 'What She Didn't Say' from the baked potato gig recording you sent! Looking forward to listening to the whole show again!
dig the goldilocks rule. ive seen that drummer play at the baked potato, really good
Great advise! Thanks!
Recently subscribed to your channel & have always enjoyed the content (even though I'm not a sax player). Bought a copy of the book featured in the vlog - looking forward to reading it 🙂
Great concepts. Very interesting! Tar Bob☺
Such a good vlog, just awesome
Amazing you, amazing vlog, thank you, bro!!
Bob, great video and terrific advice. Professionally I'm what the call and Agile Professional or Coach and FLOW is a famous book for us to help teams and individuals work together to accomplish a goal. I'm also a jazz piano player, or at least like to think I am, I can't wait to come up with practice ideas using it like with the major scale. If you have any I'd love to hear them. Thanks again
Man I dig you, your blogs realy help and inspring me- both on the saxophone and also in other areas my in life. keep going- it's worth it:)
I need to read that book!!
You should also read Drive by Daniel Pink. It talks a lot about that concept as well and how it relates to intrinsic vs. external motivations.
Hey Bob- Love this video! Just a note: while the saxophone stuff is great and all, I think the question on all our minds is, how in the world do you pack so lightly for travel?
(Thanks for all the entertaining, helpful and insightful videos!)
Yes Atomic Habits!
Hey Bob, I was wondering when the tickets will come out for the Glasgow date in your upcoming tour. I saw you in Manchester earlier this year and would be devastated if I missed you in my hometown! Love the vlogs, Cheers.
Amazing to see you rehearsing with the band with the wee fella on your lap. That displays a great deal of patience on your part. I'm a bass player and was shedding some tunes last night and my 9 year old daughter was getting in the way and distracting me from my preparations for a rehearsal and I got frustrated with her. Big father fail moment on my part... I felt bad, but only have limited time to practice. How do you do it?
"How do you do it?" -- i don't do it often enough and I fail repeatedly. just keep trying. also, embrace limitations. they help you optimize/maximize what you do with your time.
@@bobreynolds Thanks for the reply Bob. I definitely need to embrace my limitations and learn how to better prioritize family-life, work-life and music. It can be a slippery slope at times :-)
I've just discovered your vlogs Bob, am really enjoying them, they're always interesting... I have one of your albums- Somewhere in Between- which I love (and I'm a guitarist!) cheers from Australia.
That kid is going to be a jazz legend. xD
What song is in the background of this VLOG, Bob? I love it 😍
One of my piano students works at apple and he was so excited to tell me about Adena Manzel but somehow didn’t mention Bob Reynolds...
I had a thought. Listening to Rick Beato and what he did to get his son Dillon perfect pitch, Dillion listened to all the complex chords and music giving him perfect pitch. Do you think your son could be like that also?
finally, I found a video with 0 dislikes, great video bob
I really loved this volg as I agree with what your saying, Bob merry Christmas to you and you Family hope you have time to enjoy it Hope you can play Birmingham area in UK :)
Hia Bob, a question abt gigs as a sax player: have you had non-jazz gigs where they ask you to do something really undefined like, figure out something cool to play during a certain time. I've had one of these situations recently, and wasn't sure whether to pursue clarification (risking coming across as annoying or un-talented because I cant play in any situation) or to hope whatever I decide to do works out. Maybe you have some thoughts about this sort of thing? Would really appreciate it!
also is that GENE COY on drums with you at baked potato!??? so sick
Was that Star Eyes you were playing at the Baked Potato?
Hey Bob...What's the song at 9:50???..
What kind of camera do you use for your vlogs?, Or is it just your phone?
Very interesting
Hi Bob! Could you tell me what's the name of the song you are playing with your quartet at the beginning and at the end of the video, I think I have heard it somewhere but I just can't remember... Love the way you approach practice, family and playing, so inspiring! Thanks!
It's called "Hush" from the Quartet album. Thanks!
Ouch, probably should not put your horn in nose compartiment, unpressurized and it gets ultra cold on longer flight... Kinda like cryo your horn!
oops 😬
Bob do you invest/trade?
Tried to hit good music via instagram but they haven’t seen it :(
People usually pronounce his last name "checks-me-hi"
Here’s a little help. Mihaly (Me-high) csikszentmihalyi (cheek-sent-me-High)
You have to keep reaching for being a better player. If not you go stagnant. My preference is to work with players better than myself.
Burbank Airport is the best.
NO NO NO NO NO NO I'm only 4.5/5.0 and I would Never ever lose motivation playing Federer or Williams. It would be the best thing in the world. I would cherish the opportunity to be crushed by them all day! LOL
Didn't you go to Douglas Anderson?
yes
@@bobreynolds I'm a junior at DA. I'm struggling with my altissimo and I've found alternate that help me. But should I do more long tones and also include more voicing exercises to get the actual fingerings out or should I just keep using the alternate fingerings?
Man living the dream Bob! Thanks for the insight.

You're lucky. I have to pay someone to stand next to me at all times and be my human ligature (see 9:12).

Guy is great . But the new jazz guys seem so child-like compared to the old guys. and act that way too. Seems to work though.
A little too anal and calculated for me.but cant argue with success.None of us can afford a house in Brentwood. Take the paint brush and make a bold move. Thinking too much is bad for artists.
Terry... You know.... I dug reading this-'new jazz guys seem so child-like compared to the old guys'.... I don't know you or where you're really coming from with this comment, but I feel like it's something I've been feeling for years that was left unexpressed (even in my own head). I agree.... i'm a player (guitar straight ahead mostly & some fusion) 60yo & it just feels different out on the scene. Not better or a lot worse, but certainly different. Maybe it's just the new world we're in.
JH- Nothing against Bob or the new guys. My dad was WW2 generation and they are different from me.
Just an observation. Sonny, elvin were in prison and had a rougher time of it. but they seem older and more mature and worldly. affects your playing. Different world for sure. Look at theolder actors...lee marvin, john wayne, compared to Ryan Gosling and Robert Downey Jr. ejhhh. Seeing Bob with his kids reminds me of those musicians that have their 1 year olds on their answering machines talking baby talk. too much.
ps i took up guitar at my advanced age..its kicking my a**!!hats off to you guys.
There are no men left in America. and if there are they are persecuted.
