This fixed my joycon not connecting to my Switch without opening it up and voiding the warranty. Hope it helps. Do at your own risk obviously.

This worked for me! When I cleaned the contacts with the q-tip, the q-tip was dirty on the side that kept disconnecting. I bought my Switch at launch and haven’t been able to play it in handheld for the last 3 months because of this issue. Two weeks later and still no disconnections. Thanks for making this tutorial!

Thanks! I can confirm that this also works in 2021, for a problem I've been having since buying the 2019 model Switch. Now I can finally use it in handheld mode instead of the old 2017 model :-) The irony is that I do exactly this with SNES/NES carts when the games don't work - despite not seeing any visible dust or dirt. Even for 30+ year old carts, the problem is 90% of the time with the seemingly pristine looking contacts.

I bought a second-hand Switch a few months back and have always had issues playing in handheld mode. I bought new joycons in hopes that would fix things, which it didn't, but I tried your fix and so far things seem to be working so much better now. Thanks so much for posting this video!

Great video, my issue happened after I did a shell swap and it turned out I hadn’t reconnected the bottom ribbon cable properly. Just opened it back up, took the bottom cable back out and put it back in but not as tightly and that’s done the trick!

Hey, can you please specify which one of the connectors was responsible for the issue? I’m having the exact same problem and I’m not sure what connector Im inserting wrong
@@playerdem its the bottom connector closer to the chip that registers your lock in. Thats not being powered with your ribbon connector due to the faulty connection.

Yes!! This worked for us. Actually there was crumbs stuck in that small area on the joycon that connects to the switch. Used a toothpick to dig it out and then it worked!

Hey bro thanks for the video to fix my L joycon. It’s been stressful cuz the joycon was sent to be fixed up by Nintendo official repair centre but the answer was nothing wrong with it. I spent 30 bucks and two weeks to get it back with no repair. Now I bought cotton bud for a dollar and I’ve become a man like you bro thank you so much. Btw are you Irish? Some accents there

cleaned it up and use a needle to straighten the teeth and it's working great again!!
haven't played my switch n months cause I like using it handheld not just the controllers in my hand. wanting new joycons but spending $80 when the only main thing wrong is it not connecting to only my switch sounds like a waste. glad I tried once more to fix it myself

hey man I appreciate the video this ultimately solved my problem! for me though I had a bit of trouble/not much luck with the qtip much, but essentially just did the same thing with a tooth brush w/ some isopropyl and that seemed to do the trick. people probably more like to have spare qtip laying around vs a spare toothbrush but that might be a good alternative for some people having trouble making it fit.

IT WORKS! I was already prepared to open the Switch and replace that part. Cleaning it with alcohol worked perfectly.

I'm having this exact issue with my OLED model (right JoyCon struggles to connect to console in handheld mode) just shortly after a year. Can't wait to try this once I get my controllers back as I traded it temporarily from someone who never uses their Switch. The problem is most definitely in the controller as other JoyCons work fine on my console, while my original controller still won't connect to other consoles.
Luckily this does not void warranty, so if it doesn't work send it back to Nintendo
@@LordShmup Just tested the q-tip method and my right JoyCon still won't connect in handheld mode. It works fine when it's wireless and there isn't a way to force wireless when in handheld to my knowledge (nevermind charging issues). I think the physical slider mechanism is somewhat loose if I had to guess. I suppose I can try Nintendo support but I think I'll get denied being out of warranty.
@@vivisimonvi to my knowledge Nintendo is still accepting drift repairs for free, def give it a try! I'm still surprised they didn't issue new joycons for this ongoing problem.

Just tried your method, and so far so good! , I have the same alcohol and everything and I waited only 1 minutes to dry and even blew on joycon and console where I cleaned it, and it’s working better, now, how long does it last in this method before you have to try the same routine again, Or have you not had this issue again happen for awhile?

This works I tried it and didn't' even cut the q tip just flattened with pliers. Flattened opposite side to dry. The slight vertical wiggle while playing no longer causes disconnection, but I can still detach the joycons without disengaging the lock if I'm to rough while playing, but that's a different problem, and is not effecting me like the constant disconnects because of the dirty pins.
stoked this was of use for ya! I don't care for that wiggle room either, I feel like this could have been resolved with a joycon 2.0 issued to swap with all owners experiencing issues
Yo! This worked for me with only the cubetip that i flatted with my hand!
If you don’t want to unscrew parts, here’s how to do it:
First, go to settings, then go to the controllers and sensors tab. Scroll all the way down again. You will then see a button that says “Disconnect Controllers” click on it. Hold X on your right joy con so that all controllers are no longer paired. Attach the Right Joy Con again. Hold the power tab on the switch screen for long enough, then you get to see some buttons. Click close switch, then turn off. Hold it again until the word “Nintendo” appears on the screen. If you have notifications on, then you will see that your left joy con is paired.

I bought the Tablet and 3rd party Joycons on ebay , because I wanted a low Firmware to mod it... My left Joycon slides on loose , and left is so tight I don't wanna force it. Stumped...... Could it be the 3rd party crappy joycons ?> I power on the system and it just goes to the Controller screen.

i dont think i have isoprophyl in my house, are there any possible and safe/good substitutes? like idk hydrogen peroxide bc its the closest thing in the house i think??? unless rubbing alcohol works too idk if i can find that tho
I would only use alcohol, the higher the percentage the faster it dries
Ive done what i can to replicate the fix here and this im glad to see it worked for others but it didnt work for me

I fixed it by putting a piece of paper in there to bridge the gap and it would make contact, worked like a charm

I have a different problem. I got it the super Mario wonder game. It was working all of a sudden the left joy con and the right joy con quit ,working when connected to the Nintendo switch.
Updating the firmware under controllers, made it worse where the right joy gun would keep on disconnecting repeatedly after I detached it and put it back on. It started to work but I’m still having the issues sometimes and it’s not Luz it’s firm on the switch. Would this solution fix the problem?
Hmmm I don't think this is the solution. First I would check their battery life, then for a system update, then I would try disconnecting and reconnecting the controllers. I've had a ton of trouble just getting a joycon to connect, let alone multiple for a party game.

Anyways didn't have any alcohol but we all have hand sanitizer now. lol Put a few drops and just connected it a few times and it all seems good now.

Took a toothbrush with the alcohol slight brushed on it scrubbed the ish out of the console side and it worked

So before I try this does, I’m having a problem where my switch is docked so I’m playing on my TV with the joycons. But the right one is always going out and disconnecting. It’s driving me nuts! Will this work on that problem as well?
Unfortunately no as this issue resolved problems when physically connected to the switch. I would suggest going into your options and checking if you have your joycons updated.
Not much you could do with those issues besides updating your system. The most recent updated helped that issue for me
wow, this really worked.. i had to clean it twice and get in there deeper/harder the second time but it truly worked.. nintendo tried to charge me $99+ tax and $10 shipping for this >:(

Who knows if this will actually reach you. Right joy-con wont pair, but will charge. Right can be put on to charge, but left can't be on in order to play as a duo paired "handheld" mode now lets say I have left and right in, it will ONLY read one or the other. Cleaned it the way you showed and to no avail... other than paying out the whazoo to get it repaired... any suggestions? Not even another right joy-con works. It won't pair anything else or even charge anything else other than the first right joy-con..
sorry im so late to see this! im not sure :( but nintendo has been accepting joycons for repair at no charge, have you looked into that yet?
@@LordShmup Yes, the problem was both the joy-con and the system. After 2 attempts at 'trying' to fix them, Nintendo just replaced both my switch and joy-con.
hi ,do you mean the problem is - the blue joy con cannot be detected and charged when it connected to the console? however it can work normally before completed run of battery?
sadly battery was not the issue, but the connectivity between the joycon and the console
How many minutes does it take for the isopropyl alcohol to dry up one of the sides on the Nintendo switch while solving this situation?
The higher the iso percentage the less time it takes to dry

Using a flashlight I lit up the connectors on the connectors on the switch (the old model) on the left side, such that I could properly see the connectors. There are about nine of them, in a gold-ish color. So the thing is about two or three of them on my switch are not gold color but black, or maybe they are damaged or worn down. Even lighting them up it's a bit hard to see. If possible I'd like to know how a new and working set of connectors look, for comparison. Maybe someone can comment on that, try to get a photo or video of that. In case they are broken I guess cleaning wouldn't help. Thanks

Ahhh... The Nintendo classic issue returns. They just can't get those contacts to work right even after literally their entire history of producing console games

hi there, I've followed this for my sons left Joycon and now the right Joycon isn't working at all? Any ideas?
hmmm doesn't work as in doesn't turn on? if that's the case I would retry connecting it to your switch then dock it to see if it's even taking a charge. Then reset your switch and see if it connects. If so, go into your settings to see if there is an update to the joycons.
Just wondering, so it worked but only for about a day before i woke up and had to do it again and the more and more i did the less it would last, did this happen to you and what should i do?
Dang! This did not happen to me. Did you use a high percentage of isopropyl?
