  • Welcome to this exciting episode of wildwestfaces, in this account we listen to the true account of Billy Dixon.
Billy and his 28 comrades were staying at the settlement of Adobe Walls in Hutchinson county Texas when they were attacked by over seven hundred Comanche, Kiowa and Cheyenne warriors.
Over three days the warriors kept up the attack and suffered heavy losses, the hunters also lost men as the battled to defend their small sanctuary.
On the morning of the third day , 15 Indian warriors rode out on a bluff nearly a mile away to survey the situation. Encouraged by one of the hunters, Dixon, a crack shot, took aim with a rifle that he had borrowed from another hunter and cleanly dropped a warrior from atop his horse. "I was admittedly a good marksman, yet this was what might be called a 'scratch' shot."
Seeing their fellow warrior killed from such a distance discouraged the Indians and they left the hunters and gave up the fight.
Please sit back and enjoy this episode of Wildwestfaces

Greetings from Australia. I grew up on a cane farm but we hosted an exchange student from Texas when I was a kid. He was from Brownsville TX and for hours he would tell me Texan history. Finally about 30 years later I got to see many of the places he told me about. Texans are damn good proud friendly folk. I had a great time and I found Texan attitude kind of like us . In fact I find most Yanks are damn good people. God Bless the Lone Star state.

The battle site is open for visitors. It is outside of Stinnett, Texas on the Turkey Track Ranch. Monuments are there to commemorate the buffalo hunters and the Indians. Billy Dixon’s grave is at the site also. The mesa is a long way off which makes Billy’s shot all the more impressive.

The battles never talked about are the ones where there were no survivors.

This was somewhat lengthy but very entertaining; thank you for sharing this thrilling story. I wish I were as skilled with my rifle as these individuals were.

I love the way he tells the story. Simple and unexaggerated.

The account of this shot never appeared until after Dixon’s death. Further Numerous people there at the time never mentioned it. Including no less than “Bat” Masterson. Who I would have thought would have written about it. Since it vern appeared any where previous to the publishing of “The Life of Billy Dixon”. This cause me wonder if its based on a VERY similar occurrence in 1874 in Montana. Which was witnessed and written about at the time such as the Bozeman, Montana newspaper. This was done by a man named Jack Bean who had a Sharps in 44-2 5/8” case with a telescopic sight. It is detailed in “The 1874 Invasion of Montana: A Prelude to the Custer Disaster” by Don L. Weibert. It was only through Weibert’s research that this resurfaced. Franking given the lack of supporting evidence, I think the Dixon shot was something fabricated after his death.

About 10 years ago the magazine "Precession Shooting" ran an article recounting the history of the shoot as well as duplicating the shot.

That was the best version of that story that I have heard yet. I’ve heard it a couple other times but they were missing so many details to the story. Great video bro!

  • @g-man2228
