    Hey CJ, I recently auditioned for my school’s musical and I didn’t get a part 😢. When I went on here, I saw your “How to Deal with Not Getting a Part” video and it helped me not be so harsh on myself. Thank you for being the best online theatre teacher I’ve ever seen!!! ❤

    I wish they did some of this when I was doing school shows! (Also, why no understudies? What is your contingency plan?)

      For my shows, and most school shows, there is only one weekend of performances - meaning 2-3 shows total. I would much rather send a student onstage with a script in their hand to fill in for a part last minute than ask a student to fully commit to and memorize a part they will most likely never get to perform. I did have one show, during our covid recovery year, where I cast understudies for the leads. We didn’t end up needing them, but I gave them the matinee performance (1 of the 3 total shows) to ensure they had an opportunity to show off their hard work, but it never felt like enough credit for all they had done, and as if we were taking away something from the primary actors. These are just my thoughts - I know plenty of schools have understudies with great success, but it’s just not my preferred approach in regard to educational theatre. Thank you for your question :)

      @@cayleejoOh okay! We didn't have official understudies for my younger plays either (one had a "chorus" helping to sing the songs that people could get bumped up from if someone left the show for one reason or another) but in high school the shows - at least the mainstage musicals - were double cast. I think that was a good way to go about educational theatre as we all had some sort of role even if it was only a few lines, but we also all had to be ensemble for at least some of the performances and learn what it takes to be in that position as well.

      I definitely understand the argument that it can allow double the students to have the experience, and I think that’s great too! Now if there were only two of me 🙃😅.
