I love SIX, and I'd love to see a comparison! I've always been a bit against SIX as a school musical, as that doesn't give much room for other young actors, but I'm Intruiged to know what they've done!
I’ve done 13 the musical and I will admit that the full version is a little risky? There are some language things but also talk of e*ting disorders at the end for a short period of time! But i do think it was mainly turned into a jr version for time purposes like you said!
I directed the full-length version a few years ago and we dropped some words here and there for sensibility, without changing so much the rights would be jeopardized. I also had the kissing scenes be tense without the actual kiss, and or had an actor stand in front in character to block it. "OMG! Look they're kissing!" It all worked just fine. I recently checked out the Jr. version and it feels gutted to me to the point of insubstantial. Definitely a lot easier to do, but I am not sure if there's much of a core experience there. This version might be from demand created by the relatively recent Netflix version? Which is redone into a more G-rated younger audience friendly "crowd pleaser."
You should definitely read the script for 13 jr, even if you aren’t familiar with the full version. I did (it’s free)…and there are some problems (including mentions of “bases” in a song, a kiss between two characters, and referring to the “tongue”)
Between the Lines is SO good. I saw it twice in NYC. I really, really hope it does well in regional situations. I do think it was weirdly adult in points where if they cut that… it really could do go to PG.
I feel the same way! This show would transition to a Jr version, or just a slightly more appropriate high school version really easily! I really hope that is a direction that they go because the school theatre scene is really lacking any recent GOOD appropriate shows for students to perform.
Licensing for Cinderella was between $1200-$1500 for us if I remember correctly, and that was with 3 performances as a public high school. It is important to note, and many people don't realize this, you CAN negotiate your licensing fees. If the director contacts the company they can usually get something knocked off the price, especially for school or community groups, but it is still a pricey show to perform, although Theatrical Rights Worldwide and Pioneer Drama both have their own musical adaptations of Cinderella that are worth looking at and would likely be cheaper.
How can I send you a wonderful musical version of THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS that can be effectively performed by students from 5th grade on up? There's a 45 minute version as well as a full length version. Synthesizer accompaniment as well as a piano/vocal score. Liz Peterson
Great video! You explain things very well. I have a video suggestion though. Maybe you can do a video along the lines of “How to have good stage presence” or something like that. I’ve noticed a lot of kids, or just people who are performing something in general forget sometimes on how to fully connect with the audience and forget Key things that makes their performance worth while. You know what I mean? Forgetting to take a Bow after all there performances, Not fully projecting their voice doing a very important and meaningful scene. Just things like that that bug me. But that’s just one video idea I had for you if you wanna use it. (:
One distinction to make is that this video is talking about “CHARLIE and the chocolate factory” being released. “WILLY WONKA and the chocolate factory” has been available for at least a few years
SIX, PETE THE CAT, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, 13, BETWEEN THE LINES, TREVOR. I enjoyed BTL a lot and and glad it's getting a new life. I wouldn't consider TREVOR inappropriate except for those who think children shouldn't be exposed to LGBT people, but what are those people doing in theatre?
I was in a production of 13, it is such a funny show and we did it with ages 12 to 16, and there definitely is a bit of crude humour but it was hilarious, just depends on if you want your kids to be dancing and singing HERE COMES THE TONGUE (HERE IT COMES HERE IT COMES) and also the netflix version is terrible and removes all the soul and what makes it real like being 13, as the crude humour is a real part of the experience. I would recommend it as I had a blast!
13 is okay for high schools but not for middle school. There are some bad language and eating disorders and kisses. Trevor shouldn’t be for high schools, only community. Charlie and the chocolate factory is my school musics for this year in Australia. In Australia it has been available for a while. I auditioned for Charlie and mike
The most 13 does is some midly rude humor and ppl talking about their fits kiss ect teen stuff but there are bot sexual things and there's another show I wouldn't recommend middle schools to do and that "everyones talking about jamie"
This is a great question! In short, Charlie is much closer to the original book and features a lot of new music not in the original film (although it keeps a few songs from the original film like Pure Imagination and Candy Man) - to whereas Willy Wonka is much closer to the film's storyline and most of its' music comes from the film as well.
I would never do trevor for middleschool although one of my friends would be perfect for the role of trevor I think suicide and sexuality based bullying are very heavy topics and would not be done justice by a middle schooler.

I suppose the full edition will only be available when it closes on Broadway.
You should definitely do a six and six teen comparison!
Totally!

also one male lead has to kiss two different girls
Good to know - thank you for sharing :)
I was told there are references to masturbation in 13

You should do ranked! It’s a really good show that has to do with the pressure students are under doing finals
That is a great show!

You're correct - I should have mentioned that, it can definitely be confusing now that both versions are actively available!
I saw CHARLIE on Broadway and found it underwhelming. I might have liked it better if they just did as the West End production would have done.

You think what happens in 13 doesn't happen in middle schools?
Would you please compare Willy Wonka from MI and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Good to know - thank you for sharing! And yes, I agree, "Everyone's Talking About Jamie" would NOT be a good choice for middle school students.
Question! I know Willy Wonka Jr is already a thing. How is Charlie and the chocolate factory different?

13 is super inappropriate. It’s written for adult audiences.
It’s PG
