Man, all of the good shows are getting youth/teen versions the year after I graduate high school. And the same year my old high school is finally doing musicals again
I’m doing hadestown teen edition at a company here and i’m auditioning for orpheus. The crew so far loves me a ton. Ive played guitar for almost 9 years and have the exact vocal range for the role, I can’t wait for my final audition!!!!
I think it depends on the program. Though I think difficult, an experienced high school with decent vocal technique could pull this show off. The beauty is in the gritty and rusticness of the music. I look forward to seeing schools interpretations
@@cayleejoI'm auditioning for Hades in the Teen Edition in a week, and I have the vocal range for it, using sub harmonics, but I'm not sure what piece I should audition with to show that.
I actually bought the score because I was curious. Hades was taken up a considerable amount as his lowest note is not a F2 and in the obc im pretty sure Patrick Paige hits like g1s a few times. Orpheus has been taken down a half a step, as for musician-actors they have given the option to remove them with the only requirement that Orpheus must appear to play the guitar (obv) and a band member has to be hired to play his parts but the Fates instruments can be cut entirely or band members can play them. Hope this helps!
This is so helpful! You’re right, Hades does hit a G1 several times, hence my concern for a teen trying to tackle that 😅. Thankyou for sharing your findings! I’m planning on reading/analyzing the script this weekend, but I’m really relieved to hear they seem to have made it more accessible for teens! So often these “teen” or “jr” shows don’t seem to do a great job of changing the material. I’m excited to dig into it!
I believe Orpheus is taken down more than a half step. He is taken down a major 2nd so a full step. For example the epics now only go up to a C5 as oppose to the D5 in the broadway cast recording. And the F5 in Epic 3 can now be sung as an Eb5.
Question!! I have been trying to find this ANYWHERE- did you see if the Fates' ranges were adjusted? I'm a contralto, and I really would like to play the contralto fate since I can count on one hand how many musicals write in genuine contralto parts like Hadestown, and I was really worried based on how the Fates were described that the contralto part was pretty much replaced for someone with a higher range.
Potentially! Although I never choose a show when I believe in only have one option for a role 😬, I always like to have a list of people who I think could pull it off. And of course new people sometimes show up and those I’ve known for a while surprise me! It’s always a whirlwind.
As a director and music director at my school, I always have ideas of who might be in certain roles. You have to, or else you risk choosing a show for which you do not have the right actors. You don't decide to do Fiddler on the Roof unless you're pretty sure you have a Tevye. You don't choose Hello, Dolly if you don't have a Dolly. That being said, I don't go into auditions with roles precast. Everyone has an equal shot at getting a role, and every year my original thoughts about casting have not been fully actualized. There have always been surprises, which keeps it exciting.
I agree with your points, but I would like to point out a lot of schools with big music departments could probably pull it off. I’m glad it’s an option, because I love this show. Edit: I will be doing this show in the fall! Let’s goooooo
There are some PHEMNONIAL teens in local community theatre. I work in theatre in the Phoenix area and we have had many teens move on to stardom. Emma Stone is the most known, but I have worked with kids who are now in movies, touring broadway productions and regulars on TV. Point is, outside of a school setting where you have a much wider pool to cast from, this show would be amazing.
im glad that this show will finally give much need opportunities for teen altos and baritones/basses who are usually dont get the chance to be leads because of their lower voices. but i think how well this show could be done really depends on the actors, it could either be really good or really bad. also having "Our Lady of the Underground" as a song to cut is ABSOLUTELY WILD 😭😭 thats like one of the best numbers in the show and is so important to Persephone what 😭
If your cutting band members and alcohol then Our Lady of the Underground seems to be an obvious cut. Now you have to figure out how to close Act I because the iconic "Anyone want a drink" doesn't make any sense.

My son just got the role of Hades for Hadestown Teen Edition at his school. He has a wide range and mature voice, so his teacher believes he can pull it off. This review was interesting!
I’m playing Orpheus for my high school doing Hadestown and a lot of the transposes are actually perfect. It’s only a full step down for the epics which fits my voice really well, and Hades is an octave up to fit a more baritone actor, which is fine considering most Broadway actors other than Page sing Hades an octave up a lot of the time anyway. We’ve also come up with good ideas to incorporate the larger ensemble for songs like chant, so I’m super excited for our performance in a couple months!
We didn’t need a Sweeney Todd teen edition either, and we do have one. I think it was great move to have a Hadestown: teen edition to challenge our musical theatre teens. I will personally be doing it with MT teen group.
two of my fav musicals ever, seeing my friends in sweeney todd teen edition last summer made me want to join theater at school, and my school is doing hadestown so yippee
for expansion of cast, in my schools production of little shop to the urchins that just sang and dances with them and no lines, i feel like the same could happen with the fates. ik that in og greek mythology its only 3 but idk. also the worker chorus could be changed from some in one song, some in the other. also like in six teen edition there is people who will do lyrical dances that tel the song that the queen is singing about, possibly something like that or similar could happen in hadestown. also per life band maybe theater could pair with band and get some of those students to play.
I think the biggest thing is just gonna be adjusting hades and the fates. U mentioned Orpheus but I think finding an Orpheus would not be as bad as someone like hades. I’ve only met one boy in highschool who goes to my friends school that can sing that low. And I think Orpheus playing guitar isn’t that hard to find either since many people play guitar, or at least at the theater company I do shows at there’s lots of guitar players who are good singers and actors. Overall I think the main thing to hope for is the change in hades and the fates
i'm doing hadestown teen edition at my high school!! I'm in ensemble!! dream role is persephone, and I'm a alto-mezzo, but I'm not very good at dancing and don't have enough time to go to all the practices 😭😭 the girl who got persephone slays though
The information from Concord Theatricals says "Adjusted vocal arrangements to better accommodate teen voices, *including* modified FATES features *and* transposed keys." It doesn't say that the FATES are the *only* things that have been modified. No teen singer, unless that teen is a vocal prodigy of the largest kind, can sing Orpheus as performed on Broadway, so one has to assume they modified that vocal role. Perhaps check out the Piano Conductor score and compare. It also doesn't say that tracks are the *only* way to perform the teen edition. They offer a digital perusal of the P/C score, and the materials talk about how to accommodate the onstage instrumentalists or just cutting the FATES being instrumentalists. The role of Hades has been bumped up an entire octave, so you don't need a freakishly low voice like Patrick Page's voice to perform that role. High school productions require students to take on heavy roles all the time; just don't choose to produce this one if you don't have someone who can handle that. Just like any show.
I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I’m auditioning for this in a couple of days! The senior everyone thought would get Orpheus said he isn’t auditioning, and it’s looking more and more like I have a bigger shot at the role! Wish me luck!
(Douglas Anderson just put on Hadestowm teen edition and maybe it's because we're a performing arts school but it didn't feel like it lost its magic or anything like that. The show itself was true to the original and there was a live band with actors that played instruments. We even had a turntable. (Tech team is amazing)
im doing this shit im in the ensemble and we have 42 ensemble members in it man and its hard to actually get any dance parts due to how many ensemble members there are
I promise you I watched this show today live and I know that the vocal adjustments were not adjusted for Orpheus, or Hades maybe a little bit for Persephone and some for Eurydice the Fates is obvious tho
my school is doing this, and i’m going for orpheus. problem is, one of the other guys is already precasted and i don’t know if i have a chance, do you have any advice?
Dude our school is doing this and I can’t for the life of me find a teen version of all the songs that I need to do Hermes- there’s so little of it online and where not aloud to go off the original it’s a great musical but like ughhhh
Honestly, the show is doable for a more professional theater environment. I've been doing theater for six years now, and I think it's a possible show to do. My only thing is the band. I agree entirely, part of the magic of this show is the band being onstage. You'd need some pretty dang talented musicians to do this show.
I think censoring explicit sexual content is a bit silly in a show where rape is a massive metaphor or theme, it just seems like you'd be ignoring a big part of the shows impact to pretend it isn't there.
I would have to see what exactly they cut but those themes aren't explicit, or at least not overt. Undertones that convey meaning but aren't explicitly stated could still be present.
Man, all of the good shows are getting youth/teen versions the year after I graduate high school. And the same year my old high school is finally doing musicals again
My thoughts exactly!!!
What musicals are getting youth versions?

I feel this 😭 I'm graduating next year and my school keeps picking really bad shows it sucks

omg!!! next spring were having a musical at my high school and i LOVE hadestown! i really hope we get to do this ❤️
my drama teacher just applied for the rights to this show!! hopefully we can perform it next year!! (update: we got the rights!!)
Wonderful!
I think it depends on the program. Though I think difficult, an experienced high school with decent vocal technique could pull this show off. The beauty is in the gritty and rusticness of the music.

Absolutely! There are definitely high schools out there with the talent pool to make it happen.

I’d rather help teen girls attempt The Fates vocals than help them scream themselves to vocal nodes in Mean Girls. 🤦🏼♀️
I’ve never agreed with anything more!

Oh Orpheus has only been taken down for the really high stuff while other songs like Wedding Song stay in the same key.
This is so helpful! You’re right, Hades does hit a G1 several times, hence my concern for a teen trying to tackle that 😅.

High school theatre director here. This was so helpful to start the initial unpack of seeing if this might work. I clicked subscribe with a quickness!
This sounds like a show that you’d pick if you already had someone(s) in mind for key parts, like I know our HS director did for a couple of shows.
Potentially! Although I never choose a show when I believe in only have one option for a role 😬, I always like to have a list of people who I think could pull it off. And of course new people sometimes show up and those I’ve known for a while surprise me! It’s always a whirlwind.

Can you do 13 jr? I know you have mentioned it in 6 new musicals for schools but I’m in 13 jr and I’d love to see you go in depth about it!
Same as any show, this will be a good fit for the right program at the right time. Also looks like tracks are available but aren’t the only option.

Even though I already know the differences, I would love to see a video comparing Freaky Friday and Freaky Friday One Act Edition.
