i started to actually sing since about 5 or 6 years ago and the first ever vocal exercises i used was hers. to anyone who wants to actually improve their singing i suggest starting with her vocal exercises, because they helped me ALOT.
misspurple97x lol I know right... I feel there is always something keeping me from sounding how I should... I mean when I sing there are always moments In my singing that sound great covered by average singing... those great moments are what are held with the best breath support.
When I was young in singing class about 24 years ago at the age of 11, a teacher taught me another way to determine you're inhaling and exhaling correctly and to master my breath is to use my hand to hold the paper against the wall when inhaling and let go the hand when exhale, blowing air onto the piece of paper softly to make the paper becomes attach to the wall and controlling it making it stick longer. Is one of the hardest exercise I've done. I still couldn't master it till this day. But when my teacher did the demonstration at the time, he did it like a piece of cake. lol
I just had my first vocal lesson with a professional vocal coach. This was the first exercise my coach taught me. Lol. Good to know I'm getting the right advice.
+Hike Oganessian interesting points ,if anyone else wants to uncover learn how to sing really well try Grathaw Fast Sing Expert(should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my partner got excellent success with it.
This suggestion borrowed from opera (Farinelli) is time bound. You must become a master of singers breathing vs. speakers breathing. When you have it, no one can take it from you but you. :)
When I first started vocal class, this is the first thing they taught me, and we did it every course. It is the basic of other more advanced technique like staccato, and dynamic control. I recommend doing this and the vocal scales
Hey! I am getting ready for my show tonight and googled vocal warm-ups. How cool to see Cari Cole! I attended her workshop 2 weeks. She is absolutely lovely!
I must say inhale was the hardest part i only could do 6 sec inhaling meanwhile i could do exhale 15 sec easly. Is that why i felt like i could breath better while singing acapella rather than singing with music?
I remember doing a similar exercise in high school choir, and we would have to increase our count over time. I think the goal is to increase the count, as this will correspond with more time singing before you have to take a breath.
This should help me along with all of the other videos. I had to start writing it all down! lol. But now I should be able to sing a little bit better even though a lot of people already say my voice is great. But I still want to improve it to keep myself fresh with my voice.
I grew up with astma. Singing and exercises like this actually improved it. My astma is not even a problem now. I recommend singing and/or wind instruments to people with astma.
Yes, slowing down and focusing on the breath. Many of my own students are suprised at the results within one lesson, simply by slowing down and concentrting on what they're doing with their breath. A really great lesson video. I enjoyed your presentation very much.
That was helpful and free! I think it is just great that someone of your expertise gives out these free videos that you could make money off of if you wanted to.
Hello Dear, I want to ask that should we hold our breath in stomach while singing? I did it but it's giving strain on high notes. Should I leave stomach free or hold it?
I can breath well when doing exercises but when actually singing I have a hard time to actually use the breath/air properly. always seem to "run out". any advice ?
I did 10 of these and feel great. :D I didn't loose my breath and didn't gasp for air. Does this mean that my breathing is correct or I'm just doing the exercise incorrectly? I never had vocal training. Can this come naturally?
may i ask a question? where should i inhale?in my nose or in my mouth?when i do it in my nose i cant reach 10 counts even if it is slower inhale? what should i do about it
Hello Maam im confused where to exhale when singing? Only in the mouth inhala and exhale? Please reply, really confilused here.. By the way Im from Philippines thanks.
gear dave Screamingggg lmaooo. This comment is hilarious. You actually can. It's like sucking in air and making words at the same time. Idk how it works but it does
Thanks a bunch for the video; now I really feel like I've found a good technique to master my breathing while singing! Thing is after doing 10 breaths like she said I feel kinda light-headed and sweaty. Oh well...
I know that thid video is old and I'm late but still could you help me out? I tried doing the excercise but I'm having a hard time about prolonging my inhale I could only do 5 counts though I can do exhale 10-15 counts. How can I fix this?
I dont know if anyone has asked this but I can breathe out for 15 counts no problem but breathing in for 10 I seem to run out of space for air by the count of 7 or 8. Is this normal?
That's the whole point of this exercise. CONTROL. As a singer you need to learn to control the amount of air you inhale as well as controlling the amount of air exhale. If you can only inhale for 10 and exhale for 30 you don't have control of your air flow and you will struggle. What she said is completely correct, it just takes practice but if your consistent you'll get there!
Proper breathing for singing involves fully expanding your diaphragm, which means that as your lungs fill, your diaphragm expands outward which you will feel with a slight expansion of your stomach around to your sides and a tiny bit in the back. If you're managing to only feel the breath in your "lungs" a.k.a. your upper chest, it means you aren't allowing your diaphragm to expand and get max air capacity.
Thank you very much. I really appriciate to get those kind of tips for free.. I like singing but i get in trouble because i lose my breath to quickly.. So really thank you
can u help please. When she says 10 in a row does she mean as soon as you exhale with the hiss after 15 seconds, u then inhale again straightaway followed by the hissing exhale and repeat this 10 times? Or after u have exhaled do u relax, i.e. stop and then start again? Please could someone explain
@MrStratguy1 It's like this. I need it for guitar and i don't think this will help me. If it can please tell me and tell me how to practice and how much?
i have to say that after only 2 of these breath exercises, i have extended my notes so much more! i would run out of breath before i could finish the notes and it was kind of embarrassing - i was amazed at how quickly it worked! :) i have a competition in a week and needed some help tweaking a few things and your exercises are a Godsend! :) thank you!
If you watch the video again, the lady does suggest you relax before starting a new breath. It's always a good idea to watch few videos by different coaches, but stick to the same topic or you'll get confused. I have a couple of breath control videos and there is also an excellent UK teacher called Alexander Massey on TH-cam. Try those in combination with this video and you should find things become clearer. Also, try a lesson with a vocal coach in your area. Good luck.

TaLLiEsALLEY lol
Xbot4Life lol
This seriously works. When I used to sing "Your Song" I used to almost whisper. Now I can belt it out with no strain and it sounds great. Thank you!
breathing is like the hardest technique of singing
I know right, I always feel so stupid when I realise the thing i find most difficult is breathing, something I do every day without thinking
misspurple97x lol I know right... I feel there is always something keeping me from sounding how I should... I mean when I sing there are always moments In my singing that sound great covered by average singing... those great moments are what are held with the best breath support.
I hate being out of breathe when trying to slay a song!
It really is

I just had my first vocal lesson with a professional vocal coach. This was the first exercise my coach taught me. Lol. Good to know I'm getting the right advice.

this is not easy to do .. thanks for this tutorial. i will practice this exercise everyday from here on

Thank you so much for this video. It really feels like a meditation. I feel focused and centered after it.

Doing this while driving is quite the challenge!! I’ll definitely try this sitting comfortably at home :)
That was helpful and free!
I think it is just great that someone of your expertise gives out these free videos that you could make money off of if you wanted to.
she's amazing. best singing teacher ever.
how to avoid hyperventilating?
keep oxygen on your side while doing this training
Patricia Knox hold your breath to build up co2 and it should compensate for hyperventilating effect.
top class video.I have tried many, many TH-cam videos;no one else explains it so well. This has become my regular exercise! thank you!
thanks this really helped after just two days of application i notice a tremendous difference already!
Thank you for this. I've no ambitions to be a professional singer but I DO want to be the best singer I can and this will help!
you're amazing vocal teacher after watching your exercises I'm ready to preform now, thank you so much
This is very helpful & informative. Thank you.

Should I leave stomach free or hold it?
I can breath well when doing exercises but when actually singing I have a hard time to actually use the breath/air properly. always seem to "run out". any advice ?
hi hi - Timing your breaths and too much air escaping without vibrating the vocal folds. In other words, too airy all of the time.
Wow! You truly are an amazing teacher! Thank you so much for posting all these videos! Incredibly helpful!
This is very helpful thank you so much for putting these videos on TH-cam
I love your teaching style!
What a fabulous exercise...thanks so much!!
Thank you so much! Amazing simple exercise and SO helpful!!!
Really helpful. Guys start doing this exercise, try it. Very helpful. Because manage breathing is the foundation for good singing
I did 10 of these and feel great. :D I didn't loose my breath and didn't gasp for air. Does this mean that my breathing is correct or I'm just doing the exercise incorrectly? I never had vocal training. Can this come naturally?
Thank you so much my lady. Its really helpful. ☺
Thanks again for sharing!
great video! clear and enlightening!
may i ask a question?
where should i inhale?in my nose or in my mouth?when i do it in my nose i cant reach 10 counts even if it is slower inhale?
what should i do about it
Thanks so much
Thanks coach this is what i needed the most
Thanks for the tutorial
Hello Maam im confused where to exhale when singing? Only in the mouth inhala and exhale? Please reply, really confilused here.. By the way Im from Philippines thanks.
Thank you for your lessons! Very helpful!
Very sensible and technical! Thank you... God Bless you more!
How does she talk while she is inhaling??, that's physically impossible
Actually it's not impossible, you can vibrate the vocal folds and speak on the inhalation. It's called inhalation phonation or inspiratory phonation.
gear dave I can do that but my voice sounds weird af.
gear dave Screamingggg lmaooo. This comment is hilarious. You actually can. It's like sucking in air and making words at the same time. Idk how it works but it does
But then you'll have to inhale through your mouth right ?
Hahaha she was breathing after every count
Ima try this today
Fantastic excercise
Is it okay if I alter the exercise in that I hiss out for 20s instead of 15s? Does it affect the effectiveness of the exercise?~
Thanks a bunch for the video; now I really feel like I've found a good technique to master my breathing while singing! Thing is after doing 10 breaths like she said I feel kinda light-headed and sweaty. Oh well...
thank you I'll try this !
Hi Cari, When it come to breathing for singing, is it best to breathe through the nose or mouth.
Mouth
Great help. Thank you
I know that thid video is old and I'm late but still could you help me out? I tried doing the excercise but I'm having a hard time about prolonging my inhale I could only do 5 counts though I can do exhale 10-15 counts. How can I fix this?
thanks for the help
It is really effective, aside from the lip trill.
Thank you🙏🙏🙏🙏
do i count while breathing in?
If i practice this like suggested, will it become a habit when singing so that i dont have to think about it?
Thank you mam for your valuable advice about breathing exercise, and request to you getting bass voice what exercise I have to do ?
All voice types need the same breathing exercises. This exercise in this video is good for any type.
Thank you.
I dont know if anyone has asked this but I can breathe out for 15 counts no problem but breathing in for 10 I seem to run out of space for air by the count of 7 or 8. Is this normal?
Same here I guess we just have to keep practicing
Nuna Eonni Nuni my same problem. it was as if my chest would burst while inhaling if I went a few more seconda
Relax the belly, let the breath travel from the chest to the mid-section to the pelvic floor. Let the belly expand naturally.
Thank you very much. So helpful x
which muscles should restrict the inbreath? don't want to tense up someplace I'm not supposed to
i cant inhale for 10 sec,do it rather fast and exhale for 30 secs...Can this be a reason for my muscle tension dysphonia ?
Ayan Saha same is the case with me...my stomach becomes full at 6 s....but i can exhale for 30s
That's the whole point of this exercise. CONTROL. As a singer you need to learn to control the amount of air you inhale as well as controlling the amount of air exhale. If you can only inhale for 10 and exhale for 30 you don't have control of your air flow and you will struggle. What she said is completely correct, it just takes practice but if your consistent you'll get there!
great tip! thank you!!
Amazing vdo... Really useful. Thank you so much
Thanks for this video. This is really great.
One question: Is there a reason why you don't recommend doing this standing up?
Thanks!
you helped me soo much
thanks

You are awesome.
You are elegant.
Thank you.
thank you!!
I think this will me in general, not just in singing.
Very nice workout.
What's age a child should start to take a vocal training?
So is this a total of 10 inhales and 10 exhales? Or are you taking breathing breaks between reps?
well, i follow her steps but now i sing less louder than i used to, but it doesnt hurt anymoooore!
Thanks it helps a lot
Awesome...I got it!!!
thanks for ur help god bless u
Thank you very much. I really appriciate to get those kind of tips for free.. I like singing but i get in trouble because i lose my breath to quickly.. So really thank you

THANK YOU!
@MrStratguy1 It's like this. I need it for guitar and i don't think this will help me. If it can please tell me and tell me how to practice and how much?
Is it bad too use too much of vocal fry,is it gon to damage your'e voice?
wow, thanks for the tips!
thanks for these great exercises :)

She's so beautiful!
Do you inhale to sing high notes
