Here are two key ideas, no pun intended.
    1) Sing a lot. 2) Listen a lot. The ear to brain to mouth connection can be strengthened like a muscle. The more you do it, the better you will become.

A common tip is to relate an interval, e.g. half step, to a familiar melody. I tried this hundreds times of times but I do not recognize the half step when the rhythm changes. i.e. , Familar song melody #1 contains a half step. And I practice that. But when I come across Song #2 which also contains a half step but with different rhythm, I don't recognize the half step. It's almost like I am starting over; there is no carry over effect from the song #1 practice.

In spite of my extremely poor speech hearing, I do have great pitch! The part when she went sharp just about drove me crazy! She did not go flat as much.
Off key - off pitch is something I cannot stand to hear! I used to be terrible with pitch but then I had an ear infection that knocked out most of the hearing in my right ear and now I hear pitch real well. My right ear hears sounds at a higher pitch than my left ear. Knowing this might help others. At least I hope so.
I record Church services and individually record each person in the choir and even though they are good singers by themselves, they sound terrible in the choir. They tend to not pay attention to their own singing when they are in the choir. Because of this, their voices tend to wander all over the place. I told them this but they ignore me. If they heard my recordings, they would freak out! LOL!
As for me singing, I rarely do so because after I do, I get very dizzy. I almost died from pneumonia when I was a baby and my lungs were damaged. I love music anyway.
    Thanks much for the videos!

I want to thank you for this lesson. Although I went to a performing arts school to study music, I have always had a problem with pitch. I feel hopeless on stage. I had a teacher whom I respected tell me to mouth song lyrics. Even though I got into a high competitive school here in New York, I still can't shake this feeling that I will always be off pitch. In fact it is so bad (thanks to the great support of this teacher) that I seldom sing out anymore despite the fact that music is my passion.

So useful for teaching my (possibly slightly tone-deaf) partner! He can sing along with songs great, but can't discern when he's going off-key which, as someone with perfect pitch (I am my own pitch pipe) can start to grate after a while! Unfortunately, because good pitch comes naturally to me, I had absolutely no idea how to teach the concept to someone! Thanks so much for this! :D

I in fact appreciate all the advice I Have gotten thru the years. I don't know how you can say who is an expert and who is not. I have used several vocal coaches thru the years and picked up bits and pieces from all as well as less than perfect singers (expert means experienced ) anyone who has been singing for awhile is experienced.

I have to go a little sharp when I'm singing. It's an effective challenge but it never fails me. My cello teacher introduced the concept when I was soloing. "Go North, Charity." I use it when I'm singing but it's because I sing a little flat. How can a cellist sing flat when she plays spot on? Easy. I can feel the sounds waves through my fingers and the tuning peg in my ear. With singing, it's like I don't even know myself. Even though I've spent my life on a fretless instrument. I love this first tutorial, thank you. - Charity

Great vid. One of the things I almost instantly noticed about my own voice is when singing single notes for long periods of time, I have difficulty exerting the same amount of air, and that translates to my voice sounding wavery and slightly airy. Is there any way to correct this, or is it just down to practicing vocal strength/mouth muscle strength?

John Chow Dont fall for this, its a long video that brain washes you and repeats on telling you the same points over and over and over again (HOW YOU CAN SURE BECOME A SINGER BUT JUST A MATTER OF TIME) and it keeps telling you that he wants to share his secret, but he really isnt, he is just constantly brain washing you to make you believe it works, for the time being that you are waiting for the FREE TIP . ALl the patience you had during the time are used well for their mental education on convincing you their product and singing lessons. This goes for many other websites, they are the same campagin and method , goes for many workout tips sites too. Not saying its a scam, but just be careful on your decision.

Very good explanations. THINK on the TOP end of the bullseye rather than on the bottom end. In other words think of the top end of the note to make sure you are there. All people I have ever heard that have bad pitch sing FLAT which is offending to anyone with good pitch. Singers that are off key are almost always Flat, very rarely are they Sharp. lol

  • @peculiarchap
    @peculiarchap 11 ปีที่แล้ว

I actually understand her and the circle analogy, must be because I've been doing ear training to correct my pitch, and there are notes where I dont really hit (I am always sharp) but still within the circle, it bugs me, but my coach says it's fine for now as we continue to work on it, as some listeners won't notice. my tip is to trust what you hear, when I think too much that's when I don't hit the note, when I just listen and sing, I hit it perfectly.

technically speaking, pitch is a specific frequency of sound vibrations. in other words, pitch is a musical note like A, B, Eb, F, etc. keys on a piano.
tone, on the other hand, is more the quality of the sound. pitch is actually a combination of multiple resonating frequencies that average each other out, so tone can be changed by an equalizer, which can boost or suppress specific vibrations. imagine the difference between janis joplin and, say, katy perry. nasal, guttural, faint, clear, etc

no you would be singing in an octave lower. singing the high c flat would mean the note your singing is somewhere in between c and a note lower than c. if your just slightly flat would mean your note is in between c and the next lower note being a B or B#

Your voice the way you hear it sounds different than how others hear it. That's because you hear it both inside your head and out.
If you want to hear what your voice sounds to others (and your microphone), place your hands in front of your ears (not covering but standing out, like this:
-- O -- and speak or sing then. You'll get an idea of what you sound like to the rest of the world. :)

Until about 1 year ago I could never sing on pitch. I couldn't even hear or know what I was doing. Just sang in the car or in the shower. Then I just picked up a guitar and started low and brought my voice into the pitch. It seemed my voice and the 5th string C note matched. I hadn't trained my ear to listen for pitch. Then I went to my piano and started to train my voice to equal what I played on the piano. When my piano and voice matched I could suddenly hear it! All my life I couldn't sing on pitch. Now I can for the notes in my range. (baritone) A music teacher in college said I was tone deaf. I was just not trained by anyone. I had to train myself.

For ages I didn't realise what tuning was about, when I sing I use emotion, but that would always lead to what I thought was a softer voice, now I realise that softer voice is just me being flat. But when I try to sing on pitch it isn't really a natural sound.

BLNK nobody is doubting her ability And I agree with the whole vibration thing but their is people on different levels of singing not knowing what they are looking for they are simply being rerouted to areas more beneficial based on their questions. Im concurring with her on her teaching I simply break down what she is doing and why and the importance. If she had a problem with advice and discussion on her sight it wouldn't be open for comments. Its same as classmates helping one another out.

Hiyaaaa! So many of these just leave you spinning your wheels, but have you heard about - the SonaVoyce Complete Singing System program (Have a quick look on GOOGLE - cannot remember the place now)? I have heard some wild things about it and my best friend got excellent progress in performing like a professional with it. I am convinced enough to start it myself.

Doesn't mention anything about the diaphram at all. But this is good. I just realized I was going higher in pitch than I should to the right key note I should sing, in this case for me, I'd be alwaye be harmonizing with the Beatles "Eleanor Rigby" song. I'd go so high that I can't hear myself be ON key with the tune.

in the first example of sharp and flat, you are not going sharp or flat. You are singing a different note. you are singing a whole step up, and down. C-D, C-B. that's not sharp or flat, that is a wrong note.
