    I've been having problems with tension in my throat while belting high for my whole life. In between this video and your other videos I've discovered another spot that resonates in the higher frequencies with less tension. Now all I have to do is unlearn a life time of squeezing to get high.

    I love that you added the vocal fry in this video. That's a great way to access thin fold singing, and I had never even thought to use fry in that way. Can't wait to experiment. I've always used light resonant buzzing exercises, but the fry seems great.

  • @MaryLeaphart
    @MaryLeaphart 7 ปีที่แล้ว +84

    These are great exercises but how do you put them all together into an actual belt? I always feel vocal exercises are like singing in a test tube. They are so important but then you need the next application step to translate these practices into an actual song. Do you have a video for that?

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  7 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      HI Mary! That's a great question! Whenever you explore a vocal exercise, you'll want to be completely present to the experience that the exercise is giving. Each exercise is able to isolate a very specific experience in your voice. If you find that an exercise gives you a sense of openness, flexibility, freedom, strength or presence within your sound, you'll want to teach your muscles to "remember" the sensation. When you go to apply the exercise to the song, you are going to recreate the sensation that the original exercise gives you. Think of it as "training wheels" for your voice. For example, if you like the "Ma Ma ma" exercise, you can remove the lyrics, while performing the melody on the "Ma Ma Ma" feeling. When you are able to anchor that experience, you can add the lyrics while maintaining the sensation of the "Ma Ma Ma" exercise. I hope this helps!

    a lot of belting volume comes from the shape of the back of the throat. you turn it almost into a bowl shape.

    • @hatchmando4918
      @hatchmando4918 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Can u explain? I feel like we should always have a bowl shape bc the soft pallette should be raised at all times. So what do you mean by changing to bowl shape when belting? What shape is it when not belting? Thanks

    • @sarahmolnar8075
      @sarahmolnar8075 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think he means that you should not 'press' the notes cause when you press them, the throat closes and it's not good for the vocal chords (hurts most of the time). Don't know if that's what he meant, cause I'm a classical singer actually but I love musicals and pop songs too :) and I actually did that before and my throat hurt all the time after singing...

    • @DnAfilms405
      @DnAfilms405 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hatch Man Do The only way I can explain it is you drop your jaw, open your soft pallet (you can feel your soft pallet in the back of your throat on the roof of your mouth, just feel like a squishy roof) and then you kinda let the sound shoot out of the roof of your mouth, but you don't push it out. just learn to use all of your diaphragm, and when you belt, it will literally feel like you're doing a sit up in your abdominal area. let go, and it will fly freely.

    • @Brend.0
      @Brend.0 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dylan is correct. Never push your chords, push through your chest and push/project off of the roof of the mouth

    • @Itoldyouso15
      @Itoldyouso15 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ruhe1986 it's also about the shape of the throat wholly and the skull
      It determines how much resonance you can project
      It's more about the way we're born

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  8 ปีที่แล้ว +88

      LOLOLOL! That's ok! Give yourself total permission to get crazy as you play with your voice. It's not always going to sound "pretty." In fact, most of the time..it won't. But you'll have that access to sensations that you can build off of. I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm dying on a daily basis...but I just smile and wave as I'm out walking my dog.

    I was always taught to sing from the diaphragm. And you will feel it sometimes too! It's the only way to bring a full sound without singing from your throat. As long as I do that I don't feel like I'm singing just from my throat. This really helps a lot. I'm trying to bring back my lung capacity since I have asthma and I'm 53. But I don't want to damage my voice doing it.

    Madeleine, You have really great clarity in your communication and you are an awesome vocal coach. I want to utilize your techniques to improve my mask. I started singing in my church choir with more classical styles and really need tips on getting in touch with my nasopharynx. Thank You Jan

    I just got home from the police station. I was suspected of beating up a baby.

    • @RexTorres
      @RexTorres 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      seriously, though... I really wanna follow all these lessons, but, I live with other people in an apartment.

    • @MadeleineHarveyVoice
      @MadeleineHarveyVoice  8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      +Rex Torres LOL!!!! OH NO!!! well, assuming that no babies were actually harmed during the course of your practice...what I like to do is retreat to a place where no one can hear me. That way, my focus is more on the fullness of the experience rather than wondering how other people are responding. If you live in an apartment with other people, is there a time when no one is home to actually hear you go for the crazy baby sound. Good luck!

    • @RexTorres
      @RexTorres 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Madeleine Harvey Wow! thanks for your reply! I wasn't expecting that...
      anyways... timing is a problem for me because my housemates and I go to work and come home roughly at the same time. and I'm not the greatest singer in the world, so it's a little embarrassing for me to practice knowing that they'll hear me wailing. :p
      anyways... I still enjoy your videos and tips. thanks for those!

    very clarifying and helpful!! thank you very much for the video. love your channel, by the way.
    i've been belting (well, more or less, most of the time i was squeezing my muscles and screaming notes, actually. sometimes my throat used to get hurt after singing and i just didn't know what to do about it) for 2 years and i used to call it my "second voice" (because my chest voice is very heavy and i do not usually use it for speaking, only for screaming). as you can see, i had no idea what it was, and no singing teacher has ever told me about the belt. now everything makes sense, haha.
