"Then you open your eyes and the first dawn of light in your universe brings pain. The light burns you. It will always burn you. You can hear yourself breathing. It becomes hard and harsh and it scrapes at nerves already raw, but you cannot stop it. You cannot even slow it down."
This quote may very well be one of the most accurate representations of PTSD written in literature.

Anakin had fear, Vader didn't because he had nothing left to lose only rage, pain, and hatred until Luke appeared.

  • @SHREDDER510

Anakin was the hero paralyzed with fear, fear of loss his entire life. Only when Luke removes his helmet at the end of return does anakin truly let go of fear.
    “But you’ll die.”
    “Nothing can stop that now.”
Anakin’s fear was of the inevitable. Yes, eventually everyone dies. In the end, he learned to let go and be one with the force and in doing so, truly became a Jedi.
When people think that anakin had no fear, it is because they assume his hatred took its place. Hatred is only the manifestation of fear.

Bane over Vader because the third part of the Vader trilogy isn't really that good. Luceno's and Stover's parts are great (Stover's especially), but that third part, man.

I adore the way he says “the final cruelty of the Sith.” He gives it such a tone of finality. Everything that has happened to Vader has been terrible, terrifying, and malicious. However, this final realization will haunt him more than anything else ever could. This is where his self-hatred is born and becomes his driving force.

"I thought not. It's not a story your aunt and uncle would tell you. It's a Jedi Legend. Anakin Skywalker was a Knight of the Jedi Order, so powerful, destined for such greatness, the Force itself saw fit to give Anakin life. He was born but a low slave but rose to become a Jedi Knight, unmatched in power, not even by the likes of Master Yoda. And when the Clone Wars broke out, he went on to fight the great armies of the Confederacy. His great acts of valour eventually earned him the name 'The Hero With No Fear'.
Eventually, as is likely to happen with young heroes, he fell in love with your mother. And as I later learned, even married her and got you.
As I should have foreseen, his love came attachment, and he finally developed a fear of his own: to lose your mother, and to lose you. Unfortunately, his fear led him to fall to the Dark Side of the Force, and he ended up killing your mother in his anger.
Ironic: his very fear of losing your mother is what ended up killing her.

Anakin Skywalker was passionate, emotional, sympathetic to the plight of others and merciless to those that threatened those he loved.
Vader was a being of cold logic, ruthless pragmatism and a deep mistrust of others as well as himself, treading carefully in even the brightest of spaces.
Anakin resented unsought guidance, the attempts at corralling or controlling made upon him by others and the stench of manipulation.
Vader acted on command, marching in lockstep with the orders his master gave him.
Anakin revelled in the freedom conflict brought. No longer was he a Jedi or a Padawan or a slave. On the battlefield, he was finally his own man.
Vader was less enthusiastic. Conflict was simply an extension of his duties-a task to be fulfilled efficiently and nothing more.
Anakin did not care to examine the dangers of straying too far from his path, electing to take shortcuts where possible.
Vader knew all too well the price of leading himself astray.
In this, we see the deception of circumstance; Anakin, for all that he believed himself to be a Jedi, was instead a Sith in all but name.
And Vader, though anchored to the Dark Side, shared more in common with the Jedi masters he hunted down than with Palpatine.

The line in the novel that always got me.. because of its double meaning
"He had become, FINALLY, what they had always called him. The hero with no fear"
The cut to Vader, still as a man, eyes rotten with hate at this is perfect.
It isn't that he knows fear and has conquered it, pushes on, striving to do what is right..
..he is already as dead inside as his eyes betray, he has "no fear" as he has shut himself from emotion, even love. His love: her, love.
Through shutting it out in desperation, he has severed the connection he is so desperately trying to save.. and the realisation of this, to late.. is AS brutal as any other loss

After reading/listening through most of the Expanded Universe novels and the novelizations of the original six films, I've come to the conclusion that Star Wars just works better as a book series than a movie series. Sure, the movies have great visuals and amazing music, but the books have all the character development, the explanations and the true depth that the films never truly captured. And it's especially apparent with the new post-RotJ movies. While the new sequels only focus on throwbacks to the original trilogy and little else, the New Republic, New Jedi Order, Galactic Alliance and Legacy era books and comics actually focused on the story and the characters and instead of throwing the original characters away like garbage, they continued to develop them while also introducing and developing new characters.

Thunderous applause. You brought these passages to life in a way that the audiobook never could (no offense to Jonathan Davis; for the record I did listen to the whole audiobook and loved it). The music choice, the pacing of the narration, the clips and editing . . . they're all excellent. Gosh I could watch this a thousand times and never get tired of it.

Might get some flak for this, but that's not hard. As much as I love all they spawned, I hate the prequels as films. Took me years to be able to even try the Clone Wars era EU.
Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader is considered part of a trilogy with that novelization, yes? I was a big fan of that piece, though I've an admitted soft spot for Luceno.

Excelent vid. One of the best, if not the best, about Anakin/Vader. Your vid is something I wish I would have seen in Lucas film. Narration from ROTS novelization with "Light of the Seven" and your choice of scenes is giving me goosebumps. For me Revenge of the Sith as film showed Vader's tragic story in right way, but this fragment of novelization completes it. And now I know I need to read this book.

I’ve been working on a documentary about Star Wars for the past 2 years. But the youtube algorithm is so broken that subscribers don’t see it in their feeds. Here it is folks, watch and enjoy! th-cam.com/video/WYiKLZDd-4I/w-d-xo.html&
This is my second collaborated work with SithReign which I'm proud to finally share with you
Go check out his work and let him narrate your life !
    th-cam.com/users/sithreign
This is a different type of video than I usually make , you know I like do go deep in characters
and tell stories that are not obvious or usually represented on youtube , so this was a great
opportunity to dive deep into Anakin Skywalker's deepest fear , also to make ROTS novelization
more publicly known and appreciated cause let's be honest it's one of the best there is , if not
    the best.
Also even though I love Revan , Obi-Wan , Valkorion and many other characters that I can say they are
my favorites , but Anakin always was and still is my favorite , that is why I wanted to make something more
than 2-3 minute epic video (which will happen anyway sooner or later) but only after giving him full respect.
Also there are many small puzzles in this video that I hope people will find ))
Anyway , I hope you guys enjoy this , and May The Force Serve You Well .

I just realized. That "Dragon" was Anakin's "Jiminy Cricket." A mix of his conscience and the proper Jedi Knight that existed inside of him. It doesn't do anything malevolent, but it does tell him things he just does not want to hear or accept. Usually the right things.

You remind me how good that book actual was -- I really should read it again. The last bit of narration, the "this is what is means to be Anakin" bit, was the best part of it and you captured why. The words are beautiful, the delivery (haunting, raspy, echoing) is perfect, and the edit is wonderful. Especially that end, as Vader fights and lashes out against everything, with such power, but he only really wants to change things. To have made a different choice.
This is amazing. Easily one of your best, and you have so many to choose from!

This video is a masterpiece, a beautiful masterpiece. The way the footage matches the book is perfect. The hallway scene with cuts to Anakin's past was everything. This truly is one of the best of this kind of video. Outstanding work.
Edit: Back again to watch this amazing video. I think one of the reasons it’s so great is that it conveys so much emotion and tells such an interesting story without a single bit of spoken dialogue outside of the narration. Yet, the narration never feels like pure exposition.
Yes, we all know the story of Anakin Skywalker already, but the narrator’s description of it puts it into a different perspective - Anakin’s perspective.
The way that Anakin’s inner turmoil is represented as a dragon burning away at his heart is great, and then when he knows what he has to do, when the doubt in his mind is gone, he crushes it and tosses it aside.
When you watch the prequels, you’re watching the story unfold. When you watch this, you’re right there alongside Anakin. You feel his inner conflict. You feel his uncertainty. You feel his pain. And you feel his regret, his deception, his inability to change the choices that he made.
Now, with nothing left to cherish, with all that he cared for dead and destroyed by his own hand, he resides himself to his fate, embracing the dark side not out of necessity, not out of desperation or hopelessness, simply because there is no alternative. Even death isn’t an option for him.
Anakin, now caught in the trap of the dark side, sees no alternative but to destroy everything that ties him to his past, to try and separate himself from his guilt.
Ultimately, it would take his son, Luke, the epitome of the light, to bring back the true Anakin hiding behind the shroud of Vader.
Luke, like Anakin all those years ago, is desperate. If he fails, everyone he cares about will die, and all hope seems to be lost. Despite this, Luke doesn’t give in to the darkness. He perseveres, refusing to let Palpatine claim his soul as he did his father.
Anakin sees Luke at his lowest point, and he realises that Luke is in the same position that he was.
He knows he has to act. He has to destroy the Sith. He has to avenge those that have died as a result of his actions. He has to save the last part of Anakin that is left, even if it would cost him his life.
Anakin, like his son, perseveres through the darkness. He acts not out of selfish desire, but out of pure selflessness. He sacrifices himself to save the lives of countless others.
Still, on the verge of death, Anakin knows that he is too far gone to be fully redeemed. He has done terrible things, and he doesn’t believe he deserves redemption.
At last, Anakin has an out. Death awaits him, but before he passes, he indulges himself with one last selfish desire - to see his son with his own eyes. Finally at peace, he dies, but the legacy of the Chosen One, of Anakin Skywalker, lives on through his lineage.
Sorry for the essay. Kind of got sidetracked from my original point, and the video itself. I just really love Star Wars, lol. Thanks for reading.

We all love the movie...we all love Star Wars. For me, it's always had a VERY deep and personal meaning and ROTS had the deepest meaning. As much as I loved the movie, and still love it to this day, the novelization gives it SO much more power. So much more impact. There's something about the wording, the concept of "the dragon" and "the shadow" as metaphors for his anger and fears, the way it's written down that hits me so much harder than the actual movie. I remember reading it in 2006, a year after the film came out...I was 17 and I remember thinking, the whole title of "hero, without fear" for Anakin was beyond fitting. I'll forever love the movie, and even more so the novel, as it connects on a personal level and also inspires me with my own writing.
