I’m happily married to a wonderful wife in a nice home in Nashville at 58. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. But this, one of my favorite songs ever, takes me back to 83 when I lived with my first true love in (you guessed it) a trailer. Yes she left me by the time this song came out but it helped me so fucking much. I cry at every chorus
You can just tell how much Dylan influenced him in his vocals. Then he met and played live with him all over the world!! Love this. Thanks for uploading it (-:
I agree and I am usually an original version guy. This one is over-produced, which isn't shocking. That annoying backing synth thing takes away from it. The Mudcrutch versioin is less country (I like old country), but he seems to tap into the regret vibe of the lyrics on the latter a bit more.
For those who don't know,"Southern Accents" was to have been both a double album and a concept album about the South. Some of the other tracks were,I believe, released on Disc Five of the "Playback" box set.
George Price This is about as southern as you can get. I could see it being a big Country crossover if they put it on. It easily could've replaced "Spike", lol.
JPMcFly1985Two MCA felt "Spike" was a better album cut. However,I give MCA credit for knowing a great song - even if it's on a B-Side - and releasing it. (Although,I've heard that "Trailer" was also still intended for the lp,but due to timing issues, was pulled off.)
George Price Interesting to hear the story behind it. I always thought Spike was one of those kinda funny and unique songs that would've made a cool B side, but this definitely should've been on the album instead. It's weird to think that albums in the first half of the 80s usually only had like 8 or 9 songs so it would fit on vinyl. I wasn't around yet, but I know CDs weren't a big thing until the later 80s, when albums suddenly had 12 songs or so.
They could've easily fit this onto Southern Accents (maybe between the title song and "Make it Better") especially since it fits that theme so well and it's so much better than Spike (which is interesting but seems more like a funny B side).
+Oldschool7166 Same here! It just has that classic vibe about it. It's a gem! One part that I miss in the Mudcrutch version is Mike Campbell's unique guitar picking during the chorus'. It adds a great touch, IMO.

Trailer - Lyrics and Music by Tom Petty
She graduated high school I bought her a trailer
In a little park by the side of the road
I could've had the army, I could've had the navy
But no, I had to go for a mobile home
Yeah I guess, I gave it all for you, babe
There wasn't room in that trailer for two, babe
I kept up with my interest, I kept up with my payments
She never said goodbye, I never asked why
Man, we used to dance to Lynyrd Skynyrd
Boy she used to look so good at times
But I guess, I gave it all to you, babe
There's not room in no trailer for two, babe
Well I guess, I gave it all for you, babe
All for you and your trailer too, babe

Petty BLEW AWAY Dylan ....overrated satanic ass...he said in an interview he sold his soul...fact..
I love it, but the Mudcrutch version is just so damned good. Still Tom Petty either way. Can't lose there (-:

JPMcFly1985Two In fact, from what I read, "Spike" was a last minute add - replacing "Trailer"!
I wonder what they were thinking? lol. Then again it is nice to discover a treasure you didn't know about.

"She never said goodbye I never asked why" Tom Petty
This song is great thanks to the uploader for uploading a rare song! :)
Mudrcutch re-recorded Trailer. It's the first song from their upcoming album "Mudcrutch 2"...
I put this version and the Mudcruthc version in my Petty playlist. Thanks for the upload!
A comparison between this and the Mudcrutch version is a study in what you can do with a good vs competent drummer and how it adds to a song.
Huge difference in Stan's drumming!
This one seemed to be even different from the one in the Playback 6CDs. Maybe I am wrong...I cannot find my playback CD... sad
❤❤❤❤❤
This was meant to be on the "southern accents" album, but like "Casa Dega",had to be removed due to running time.

Agreed. I think Trailer is a better song and fits better on the album. Spike should have been a B side.
Classic TPHB
Love It
I think I like this version better than the new Mudcrutch version

Exactly. This is Petty sound throughout..Mudcrutch is just Petty voice
What album was this on???....!
Great song, perfected by the MUDCRUTCH version
I prefer the Mudcrutch Version
theres no way ron was out of the band in this song!!! I don't believe it...
He was. That's either Howie or Mike on bass.
june21stgem Yep, Ron left in 82, I believe....
George Price It was Howie.....
Debbie Livingston True, but Mike said it was whomever had the better idea for the bass parts who got to play it. I,however,do think it is Howie myself.
Why was I recommended this?
