I don't understand why people think someone covers a song because they think they can do it better. Whether it's a tribute or just having some fun, which every artist loves to do, who gives af? Listen and enjoy, or move on!
I would have never known Tom Petty covered this if I hadn't read Will Birch's book "Cruel To Be Kind" the Nick Lowe biography. Good cover. Thanks for posting Jeff W. Cheers!
Gotta read that one! Me, I just found about this cover when I was reading Lowe's Wikipedia page, and, by mistake, clicked the "pages that link to this" link - which gave me a list where I saw "Tom Petty".
Tom did a lot of really cool songs that didn't end up on albums and didn't get much exposure. This one, of course, but also "Keepin' Me Alive," which should have and could have been a hit, but because of the producer Jimmy Iovine, didn't end up on Long After Dark. There's a lot of great songs on Playback that aren't available elsewhere. Thanks for posting this song. It popped into my head a few minutes back, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it here.
I used to hear this on FM radio, KMET and KLOS, in 1980, in Los Angeles. As I remember, it was a "B Side" to his live version of Eric Burdon's "Don't Bring Me Down". This is outstanding. THanks for posting.
You're correct -- and "Don't Bring Me Down" wasn't released until '86, on the "Pack Up the Plantation" album. This was actually the B-side to "Make it Better."
@ted33ina3rd You're going to see Tom Petty or Nick Lowe? I saw TP and the Heartbreakers during the tour for Into the Great Wide Open and the one for Wildflowers. Two of the greatest concerts I ever went to.

Nick Lowe, what a songwriter
One of the best, certainly. ❤
I can see why Tom would cover this song. Great songwriting which a master like Tom would love. God we miss him
Very cool!. Always loved Nick Lowe's music and it's great to hear this cover by Tom and the Heartbreakers. Great song.

"All at sea, in an ocean of emotion"..... Brilliant song! One of my favorite B-Sides!

I love the opening riff to this song, I like the whole thing but that riff especially.
T.P & da Heartbreakers covering a Nick Lowe tune............................
RIP Tom, your earthly presence was quite a ride!

I would love a Playback 2 from 1994-present.
@GPhoenixMan This song was originally by Nick Lowe. Both versions are great. I am going to see him in July. He always puts on a great show.
I love Tom's voice on this!
Much as I love Tom, Nick Lowe has the edge on this version.
Similar characters' Nick & Tom; class acts.....
@GPhoenixMan some other songs that come to mind are "Trailer" for Southern Accents, or "Casa Dega" and "Ways to Be Wicked" etc.

It may be a B-side, it's a little success!
hey, what single was this a B-side for?
I THINK that you may have been hearing the Nick Lowe version, as I don't believe Tom Petty recorded this cover until 1985? I may be wrong!
What a whiney, fuct vocal. Nick Lowe killed it. Look it up!!!
Ur fuct
Much as I love TP&tHs I think they should resist the temptation to cover their favourite songs when the original just can't be improved on.
Derek Biggerstaff You can not be serious? Everything they ever covered was beyond quality.
Not a bad cover. Hard to improve on Nick Lowe's original though.

I dont think its funny no more!
Not a fan of this version. Apart from Petty's snarly, garbled vocal and grungy sound, he adds nothing to this tune.
AGREEEE!!!
