This is the song that really got me into Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers . I was a 13 year old kid that loved this video, post apocalyptic scene with gaming. Such a powerful song and so well written. Tom could write brilliantly simple lyrics that spoke to complex issues. I’m so glad I am alive at the same time Tom Petty was with us .
This was my first video I saw on MTV. My friends parents just got HBO and MTV, we just started watching MTV and this video came on. Its the best video I ever saw. Watching it again brings back great memories.
It’s up there...but not his best...Tom wasn’t a big fan of it....he aged the synth sound....wach the behind the scenes of this video...he says “good, now we can get back to making real rock n roll, enough of this synth bullshit”. The MUDCRUTCH stuff is my personal favorite....SCARE EASY...I SHOULDVE KNOWN IT
My best friend was the first in our neighborhood to get cable TV in 1982. This was the very first video I saw on MTV. We've come a LONG WAY (musically, and otherwise) since then...

MTV wore this video out ! I will never forget. America had moved from the 70's into the 80's, hairstyles grew large, fashion went wild ! WOW, what good times. Tom Petty nailed it with that video and song !
There's an innocence to this video and a sense of discovery, of hopefulness that you just don't see in music videos anymore....actually you don't see music videos anymore period.
*_I can still think back to 1982 when I saw this video on MTV. They played it every hour on the hour. It was pretty much programmed into my brain . My friend that lived next door actually looked almost exactly like Tom and even his mom used to joke around that if he didn't quit goofing around all the time she was going to send him to Tom Petty with a note saying "This is your child, good luck._*
I will never forget rushing home from school so my sister and I could watch MTV. I was in 6th grade and she was a freshman. Back in those days we only had 1 TV a big console in the living room. MY dad worked the 3 to 11 shift. SO mom would let us watch TV for 1 hour before doing homework. This video is one of the first I remember. That was so cool and life was much more simple then. This video and John Couger Jack@Diane, and oh Mickey your so fine, and Michael Jackson BEET IT was some of the first videos. WHAT a great time to be young. The 80s were a great decade to be young. I really miss that time of my life. AND MTV was awesome when they showed videos all the time. And even better the late 80s we would all get drunk and smoke weed and go to my buddies house on Saturday night just to watch HEAD BANGERS BALL. YOU would see all the new videos of hard rock. That decade was the best time to be young. Sex-drugs@Rock-n-ROLL.!!!!!---MTV WAS THE 80S. RIP MTV 80S STYLE!!!!
Barry Alkire Hey Barry I was going to comment on this vid but then I saw your post and figured....Well Barry pretty much covered all the bases ...Lol...Very well.said my friend , And your Absolutely right ...The 80s were such a great time to grow up , and just like my parents who had a great era to grow up in ...My father always describes his neighborhood just like a scene out of A Bronx Tale, ( GREAT ERA TO BE A KID)..Stick Ball in the streets ,Robbing the fruit truck and meeting the milk man on the front steps so he could run back upstairs to have his cereal!!!...Lol..... Sadly I dont think our children will be able to say the same thing ...I mean every generation looks back on the years they grew up in with fond and nostalgic memories but I really don't think our kids will be able to look back on their formative years and really be able to say ...That they too grew up in a great era... Everything you said I and a whole generation of kids can most definitely relate to...The 2 vids I would wait to see is Van Halen's Unchained and So this is love ..Those 2 live concert vids really captured what a concert looked ,sounded and SMELLED like ...LOLOL....Hey Barry I have talked to many people who can relate to your comment cause they too also lived it and I always ask them , what part of the country were you from...So Im thinking the same thing about you and your sis ...So East Coast , West, Middle of the country ???.... Where did you guys grow up Brother???... Take Care My Friend
Head bangers ball was even on in the 80's?? Who hosted it? pinfield? Had no idea! I grew up watching MTV in the early 90's and loved it, had the same experiences!! they always still played all the 80's hit videos I was raised on along with the new... VH1 was also great back then! I still remember when VH1 had this big event when they played every single music video in their archive existence my dad went out and bought a stack of nice expensive vhs tapes to record them all, took an entire week for vh1 to play them all 0-Z and my dad had everyone in the family on a crazy recording schedule for the whole week with no playing my new super Nintendo on the one wooden TV in the house!!
Nick Hall Nick Headbangers ball was or wasn't on in the 80s?,..I think you meant to type wasn't on in the 80s ... Headbangers ball was on in the 80s , think it started in 87 or 88
The first time I listened to this song was when I was 5 y/o in kindergarten in 2010 when I was on my school bus, my former bus driver Mrs. Jackie handed me an old school cd player which I think was a Sony discman with a pair of headphones, and proceeded to play this song for me. Hearing this for the first time was something because afterwards for years I tried to search for the title of the song but gave up, and now I’m here as a senior graduating in 4 months. Time flys, enjoy it.
I was 11 years old when I first saw this music video on MTV, in the very early days of the station. Your household needed one of those huge metal satellite dishes to receive the channel, and we were lucky enough to have one. (My dad worked in television). "You Got Lucky" has remained one of my all time favorite videos all through the decades. The cyberpunk aesthetic & dystopian setting - combined with arcade games and incredible rock music - was like a perfect intersection of all my favorite preteen things. On July 15, 2017 I was lucky to see the legend Tom Petty perform in Toronto, Canada. Rest easy, MadDog, and Long Live Rock & Roll.
In the 80`s I was in my 20`s. I was in my 30`s in the 90`s . My wife & I were always on the cutting edge of all the new & hip good music scene. They were great times.
Here are the lyrics : You better watch what you say You better watch what you do to me Don't get carried away Girl, if you can do better than me, go Yeah go, but remember Good love is hard to find Good love is hard to find You got lucky babe You got lucky babe When I found you You put a hand on my cheek And then you turn your eyes away If you don't feel complete If I don't take you all of the way, then go Yeah go, but remember Good love is hard to find Good love is hard to find You got lucky babe You got lucky babe When I found you Yeah go, just go, but remember Good love is hard to find Good love is hard to find You got lucky babe You got lucky babe I found you If you find this useful, like this comment! I'd really appreciate it!
Cue the music...and Tom walks off into the sunset towards the Pearly Gates to meet up with his buddies Roy Orbison and George Harrison to jam forever...move over everyone, here comes Tom Petty!!! God Bless you Tom and thank you for the everlasting memories of what real musicians do for music and what you gave us burned in our hearts for eternity...!

Not really
Timeless. We all never know just how many times we got lucky.
@Mary yessir, we shall never know just how !any times we get "lucky babe" per day😜👍
Hundreds of times. Just walking to the shop.
Countless times I know for self a truly beautiful gift this thing called life.
"Had a lot of fun Rock & Rolling to your jams Mr. Tom Petty. Miss you and RIP.
This was my first video I saw on MTV. My friends parents just got HBO and MTV, we just started watching MTV and this video came on. Its the best video I ever saw. Watching it again brings back great memories.
Everyone will be taking about "American Girl" today but this is the most epic Petty song.
Yeah this is my favorite Petty song
Agreed!
I dedicated this song to my girlfriend. And yes one of my favorite Tom Petty songs along with into the great wide open
It’s up there...but not his best...Tom wasn’t a big fan of it....he aged the synth sound....wach the behind the scenes of this video...he says “good, now we can get back to making real rock n roll, enough of this synth bullshit”. The MUDCRUTCH stuff is my personal favorite....SCARE EASY...I SHOULDVE KNOWN IT
*hated the synth sound
Rest in peace Tom Petty you are a legend and your music will live on forever.
My daughter called me that morning told me i couldnt belive it i grew up like her on his songs will miiss you brother RIP
I was a MTV guy now 62 good stuff rip Petty
We Got Lucky when we found you, Tom Petty ~ Rest In Peace, Friend.
Amen
💯💯💯✔
The 80s were the FUTURE!
This vid dominated early MTV.
My best friend was the first in our neighborhood to get cable TV in 1982. This was the very first video I saw on MTV. We've come a LONG WAY (musically, and otherwise) since then...
Now that’s amazing
Not really. We have went down fucking hill.
@@CoyLeigh-xg2gw Yeah friends in low places! My name is Lewis Robert Burton Jr!
What!!!!!??? Music will never be this good again
Them synthesizer chords at 1:15 is the sound of the 80’s. It’s something about it that sends chills.
Nostalgia 💙
Love that part.
The Police - Spirits In The Material World
Cords are cables. Chords are a musical arrangement.
Analog 80s
One of the COOLEST videos they ever showed on MTV. Very Mad Max/Post Apocalyptic '80s. One of my favorite songs/singles by them.
AnthonyTH-camFan one of the gayest videos ever showed on the box
@@essazegar2021 your pretty gay, did you know that?
@@essazegar2021 Seriously? You think this is gay? I guess you never saw any Billy Squier videos. Maybe you're the one who's gay because this video wasn't gay enough for you? This should make you very happy: th-cam.com/video/WZvl2aqIyNg/w-d-xo.html

WHEN MTV HAD BALLS
My favorite Tom Petty song and I miss the days of MTV music television. Brings tears to my eyes.... the memories.
there,there...
AMEN to that!! :)
the nostalgia kills me too, part of me so wishes I could've stayed in that time with that music forever
My favorite Petty song, too. From MTV forward. Waited for this one to pop up.
I feel ya! Sad
That guitar solo is on point
'You got lucky when *I* found you'
Genius.
With tears in my eyes I say goodbye to you, Mr. Petty. You are truly an American Original that we will never see the likes of again. I got lucky when I heard you.
God Bless you.
Rest In Peace, brother.
But remember good love is hard to find. you got lucky babe. Such haunting music to remember Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from back in the day. RIP Tom.
Hi
I sure do miss the 80s. The music today is not even the same. Sometimes I wish I could find a time machine and go back in time . Life was much easier , and everyone enjoyed life , do you love this beautiful songs? I do love Tom so much I miss his moments on earth 🌍
I bought this cassette when the single was released in the winter 1982-1983. Had my lil Toshiba boombox to play my tapes. Good times.
It's hard to believe that was out over 40 years ago. I'm still that weird chick with the boom box and mixed cassette tapes for the parties 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 @@wesleygibson1644
I feel lucky just to be able to watch this video over & over.
The Mtv premiere of this song in the 80's clearly etched in my memory. ❤ you got luckey babe, you got luckey, when I found You!
This will always be my favorite video on MTV. RIP Tom Petty. Legend.
MTV wore this video out ! I will never forget. America had moved from the 70's into the 80's, hairstyles grew large, fashion went wild ! WOW, what good times. Tom Petty nailed it with that video and song !
Those days were magical. 🤘
Love this song. That's when the world was still ok
❤
For me....one of the most memorable MTV videos from back in the day
D Boogie it happens to be my favorite
Agreed
There's an innocence to this video and a sense of discovery, of hopefulness that you just don't see in music videos anymore....actually you don't see music videos anymore period.
This was and will always be one of my fav. songs from Tom :Petty & the Heart-breakers. I love this song.
The fact to the matter is I found a lifetime friend of mine a few years after this came out. Love ya, Susan!
When he says good love is hard to find is the most truest thing I’ve heard in this song and it’s the truth!
A simpler world without internet trolls, cyber bullies, and catfishing!

Thats awesome really painted a picture there
Barry Alkire Headbanger's Ball was badass. Watched that many times while partying out.
Awesome memory. Thanks for sharing that.
That is an awesome testimony , to an awesome performer!
Some people dont know what they have until its gone.

2024❤ listening, because good music is hard to find
So true.....
That’s for sure. Music like this is so hard to find. The good old days.
Watching this in 2024... what a trip
I always liked Tom Petty and the heart breakers same time was in my early teens and now I'm 54 and my wife is 56 we both love listening to this group
So glad to be a teen in the 80’s where you could find something from all genres to enjoy
In the 80`s I was in my 20`s. I was in my 30`s in the 90`s . My wife & I were always on the cutting edge of all the new & hip good music scene. They were great times.
I agree!! T'was an interesting time to grow up in - with alot of Different but Good kinds of Music & Songs to choose From!
I was born in the 80s and am finding more enjoyable music from then than what I actually grew up with.
You right!
Born in 75
Their #20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 from late 1982 and #1 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart.
Here are the lyrics :
You better watch what you say
You better watch what you do to me
Don't get carried away
Girl, if you can do better than me, go
Yeah go, but remember
Good love is hard to find
Good love is hard to find
You got lucky babe
You got lucky babe
When I found you
You put a hand on my cheek
And then you turn your eyes away
If you don't feel complete
If I don't take you all of the way, then go
Yeah go, but remember
Good love is hard to find
Good love is hard to find
You got lucky babe
You got lucky babe
When I found you
Yeah go, just go, but remember
Good love is hard to find
Good love is hard to find
You got lucky babe
You got lucky babe
I found you

Cue the music...and Tom walks off into the sunset towards the Pearly Gates to meet up with his buddies Roy Orbison and George Harrison to jam forever...move over everyone, here comes Tom Petty!!! God Bless you Tom and thank you for the everlasting memories of what real musicians do for music and what you gave us burned in our hearts for eternity...!
