Yep, the votes have been counted, the arguments have simmered down and the results are in. Unsurprisingly, the class of ’22 is an absolute belter, with everything from single-seater fan cars to retro EV buses, and off-road supercars to trusty hot hatches.
We’ve never known a year where the innovation and bandwidth of the car industry has been on such dazzling display. As hybrids wedge firmly into the performance car space, EVs infiltrate everything and mature with both range going up and price coming down, design daring continues its rise and pure petrol cars rage against the dying of the light, we’ve been treated to a perfect of storm of new and interesting stuff.

As Chris said in his CTR review, he likes a hot hatch old school. That is it being FWD, light and likes to be chucked around.
GR 86 is great choice for sports car of the year. Affordable, fun, great car to modify, it just checks the boxes off for what the general public would want in a sports car.
I don't know in the UK, but the fact that here in Spain a GR86 is almost 20K euros cheaper than a Civic Type R or a Golf R says everything. Great work form Toyota.

This was such an amazing year, Porsche Cayman GT4 RS, Toyota GR 86, Honda Civic Type R, Ferrari 296, they are all some of the best driving machines ever imo! ❤️🙌🏻

Can't believe they left out the biggest American car release of this year (or even this decade). I think the Europeans are afraid of comparing the C8 Z06 to their counterparts because the value of the Corvette destroys everything else they've mentioned.
I couldn't believe they mentioned stupid Ferrari hybrid and not C8 Z06 which is one the most powerful NA engines

FUN FACT: The Hyundai N Vision 74 is based on the 1974 Pony concept; which coincidentally was designed by the same man who designed the DeLorean. Just look at the two side-by-side and you’ll see the similarities.

I got the new civic for 2 months - the car is superb. The new Type R was built on that same chassis. No wonder it won so many awards. Honda really killed it this time around!

@@thelastpetrolbender2744 an average Sedan like vw Passat or audi A4 is 4.7M long, the new civic is 4.6M ! The last Integra was 4.4M, the new civic isn't a small Hatchback, as the average is 4M.
@@TanguyPellerin you can have your opinion all day long, The cars are getting bigger every decade, if the definition of hot hatch doesn't grow with it, it will just die out. I mean I agree it is too big, for me, everything that has more than 3 doors is too big, I drive an ND for a reason. Car manufacturers should bring the real small car back, but infact they are not going to do it.

A two door hatch version would be so cool.
Agree not a hot hatch at all. It is a sedan with a truck/boot that happens to hinge above the rear window. Audi calls this a Sportback with the 4 door S5.

Well, Lamborghini did create some concept offroaders intended for the military back in the day. The most iconic offroader from the brand was the LM002.

Those double fins on the Jesko are pure evil. I've only seen Jeskos in games and they're all the 'standard' version rather than the Absolut, high-speed, low-drag focused version. They both look bananas, but the Absolut is just a little more evil.
I can get totally on board overall with this years winners. Unlike last years awards i got no major disagreement with the cars picked/not picked.
For best company i personally would´ve picked Hyundai, but KIA had some arguments speaking for them as well.

However I dont see the point in giving a prototype the icon award when in a year or two it will be forgotten and the furthest thing from an icon. Also the VW buzz is way too expensive to actually have an impact.

I think it's related to the Hyundai Ioniq series release. Nobody thought they would actually make them look like that, and they ended up being pretty close to the concept. Which gives hope that N vision 74 can come to the world like that too.

When your first car could have won the best sound of the year too (considering it's not a track ONLY car!) then you know you started off STRONG. That Hyundai is also well-deserved to have a category all to itself - it is SUPERB. I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that a 205 GTi Restomod made this list. I totally understand why and would LOVE ONE TOO!! As for the rest of the cars...clap clap - no complaints about the list itself.

C8 Z06 would be my choice but the Lightning is arguably a much bigger deal.
The f100 series is the best selling passenger vehicle of all time. That it’s going electric is a landmark for the car industry.
Impressive as the C8 is, it is arguably ‘just’ another sports/super car that doesn’t really evolve the industry in a meaningful way

When you listen to Freddie’s remarks it just tells you how broken the automotive industry is, this was a great summary of the this years show as I have not seen any of it, now I have.

Fun fact, F&F has always been a poser culture. The guy that writes the scripts and directs is one of the most unqualified people to write about street racing culture. He literally knows nothing about cars and just makes it up as he goes. Fun movies built on a total lack of knowledge and understanding, which is why any sort of technical automotive shop talk in the script are just nonsense buzzwords used in the most incorrect manner possible, and became popular memes in real car culture.
Hyundai has been a major automotive and engineering design standard for decades in the industry. They really are only gaining popularity in the performance world now becasue they are bringing back the idea of retromod 80s design on the public stage instead of building silent sleepers like the kia stinger that inspired Alfa Romeo to make the Giulia (massively underrated sleeper with a Twin-turbo Ferrari engine for only $60k!).

Their rally performance in 2022 was admirable, though the i20n had some mechanical and electronic issues in the first half.

i have yet to see a 2010+ car that's captivated me like the NV74. If it truly gets launched without visual changes, then i'll get on a order list for it regardless of drivetrain.

It has been a constant source of amusement to me that the looks of the FK8 Type R soo upset motoring journalists. Apparently hot hatches have to look bland and be totally uninteresting. But congrats to Top Gear for getting it right with the FL5.

@@Azkeroth Chriss Harris always tries stuff other reviewers wont dare with a fwd but even so the last one looked tame compared to this, it was hard to it with the last one for me but in this one a lot of reviwerers talk about torque steer but dont slide it, even in the Nurburgring section where the last one went smoothly or understeered, this one gets into trouble with torque steer
