For this year’s Top Gear Magazine Speed Week, for reasons not entirely of our own making, our annual Perfmorance Car of the Year Test returned for the first time in nine years to the Top Gear test track in tropical Dunsfold, and that deserved recognition. Go big or go home? We went big and went home, assembling the largest group of contenders we’ve ever had - 26 in total, with 12,440bhp between them - much to the irritation of our insurers.

Chris is right about the BMW E39. That was BMW's pinnacle of design, packaging, aesthetic. 50/50 chassis balance, a proper I-6, a driver's interior, the road manners, defies its 5 passenger family sedan identity. The V8 M5 was a real gangster, but the mass imbalance and lost of the superior rack and pinion steering, was the wrong path IMO. A powerful M Power I-6 engine would have raised the M standing further as a driver's car. After the E39, (and the E46) BMW fell victim to bigger, heavier, longer, more gadgets and gremlins, more plastics/nylon.
So you want a 2022 E39 M5? Why can’t we understand that 1. Car guys are less than 5 percent of their customers. 2. How can you improve a car if you don’t change anything?

The E39 was a V8 (and my favourite) The later E60 had the V10. The earlier E34 had the straight 6. Pleased I still have my 205 GTi.

After driving an Impreza and Legacy for about 7 years i bought an i30 Hyuandai. The most reliable car i’ve owned in my 44 years of living. Not to mention how Subaru was a rally-hero back then and now Hyuandai is in WRC and is making great drivers cars with their N-models.
Seeing Hyundai (and Kia) become cars actually worth buying is something I didn't expect but I am totally here for. Would love a go in the i30n.

I was more just musing how i went from owning a car from Subaru, a company that had rally-history to getting a NA 136hp hatch from a company i had no expectation to do WRC, only to have that company also end up rallying...

@@BongRipsForDayz No, the regular M5 is better all around, more usable space, and more comfortable but personally I think the Caddy CT5 Blackwing is better cuz it has more soul.
Can these 2 host Top Gear together ? I really love their chemistry and it's like Fast James and Tall Hammond.
Except they're both on the short side, albeit not 'Hammond short'. I thought this was awkward since Jack basically did nothing but provide stats and names upon demand. I think he's very intimidated by Chris and knows his level of experience and knowledge pail in comparison, so he's awkwardly relegated to being a human fact book for Chris' aging memory, occasionally providing a subjective personal opinion, but never being able to argue his views nearly as well as Chris can.
Alfa Gtam.. one of the most beautiful cars ever made, plus fantastic driving and power, easily pick it up over all the others.
A great 18minutes! It will be sad to see these cars go as the years go on but let's treasure them whilst we still can! Love Chris's no messing about opinions 😁

Chris is hilarious 😂 I think to me he showed the most interest and love for the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA M than any other car there, can't say I blame him! It's one of the most beautiful cars ever made, and has true performance to match, shame it's so damn expensive.

I absolutely LOVE what Bentley has done with their design language over the last few years. There’s a dark green 2020 continental parked near my house and I just can’t believe how good it looks. Luxurious but muscular.

On the only track day I’ve ever done, nearly 17 years ago, I drove a 355 Berlinetta back to back with an Elise. The Elise was so much more fun.
A sports car will always be more fun and engaging than a supercar. Seriously, people tend to have this misconception that the more money I pay, the more fun I’m gonna have. It’s been proven time and time again that’s not the case. Supercars are dream machines, stuff to treat yourself to, glamour mobiles, that’s what they’re best at. If you want a smile machine, get a nice sports car, be it a 911 GTS, Alpine A110, Caterham 170R, Lotus Emira, all are gonna be better suited to making you smile than a 488 Pista.

What? The C7 Z06 is old. The new C8 version that you speak of hasn't been officially unveiled jet. No one has driven it yet. And the Corvette isn't sold in the UK anyways.

I think Chris nailed it, there is only one car that you’d take home. It simply does everything you could possibly want, carries passengers in comfort, has a boot, looks great and it goes like the bejesus- The M5 CS.

With all the tech and innovation I love the fact that a back to basics approach (in the most part) succeeds. The 205, Lamborghini, GtaM, Lotus and the Mini are what interests us the most. Appreciate GT3’s and even the M5CS are still trying to stay true to the recipe. Shame the demand for old school is driving up the costs.
Kids should listen and understand the essence of life , flash and expensive isn't everything...
