Chris is right about the BMW E39. That was BMW's pinnacle of design, packaging, aesthetic. 50/50 chassis balance, a proper I-6, a driver's interior, the road manners, defies its 5 passenger family sedan identity. The V8 M5 was a real gangster, but the mass imbalance and lost of the superior rack and pinion steering, was the wrong path IMO. A powerful M Power I-6 engine would have raised the M standing further as a driver's car. After the E39, (and the E46) BMW fell victim to bigger, heavier, longer, more gadgets and gremlins, more plastics/nylon.
So you want a 2022 E39 M5? Why can’t we understand that 1. Car guys are less than 5 percent of their customers. 2. How can you improve a car if you don’t change anything?

After driving an Impreza and Legacy for about 7 years i bought an i30 Hyuandai. The most reliable car i’ve owned in my 44 years of living. Not to mention how Subaru was a rally-hero back then and now Hyuandai is in WRC and is making great drivers cars with their N-models.

A sports car will always be more fun and engaging than a supercar. Seriously, people tend to have this misconception that the more money I pay, the more fun I’m gonna have. It’s been proven time and time again that’s not the case. Supercars are dream machines, stuff to treat yourself to, glamour mobiles, that’s what they’re best at. If you want a smile machine, get a nice sports car, be it a 911 GTS, Alpine A110, Caterham 170R, Lotus Emira, all are gonna be better suited to making you smile than a 488 Pista.

I think Chris nailed it, there is only one car that you’d take home. It simply does everything you could possibly want, carries passengers in comfort, has a boot, looks great and it goes like the bejesus- The M5 CS.
With all the tech and innovation I love the fact that a back to basics approach (in the most part) succeeds. The 205, Lamborghini, GtaM, Lotus and the Mini are what interests us the most. Appreciate GT3’s and even the M5CS are still trying to stay true to the recipe. Shame the demand for old school is driving up the costs.

If you like driving pleasure, you shouldn’t even be looking at supercars. That’s not what they’re for, their rich boys toys, some of which are very capable on track. I think you’ll always be smiling more in a purpose built sports car. Chris has said Ferrari have lost the appeal for those who like driving, I disagree. In my mind, Ferraris are glamour machines, drivers machines, there are brands that specialise in that a lot more.

The E39 was a V8 (and my favourite) The later E60 had the V10. The earlier E34 had the straight 6. Pleased I still have my 205 GTi.

On the only track day I’ve ever done, nearly 17 years ago, I drove a 355 Berlinetta back to back with an Elise. The Elise was so much more fun.
