Did Chevy make a BIG MISTAKE with the 2019 Camaro TURBO?

  • The Chevrolet Camaro has been around since 1967. Since then there have been a variety of engine options. For the first time in history the Camaro is available with a 2.0L inline-4 turbocharged engine producing 275 HP & mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Camaro is still featuring the great looking lines inside and out. Check out on all the details of this 2019 Camaro LT to decide if it was a bad move by Chevrolet.

hmm I have a couple of opinions on what everyone is saying, firstly I own a 1LT 2019, would I prefer the V6 or V8? quite obviously, I plan to upgrade eventually but I also am only 21 years old and have had my license for just 2 years, the insurance on a bigger engine would be insane compared to my insurance now,I couldn't afford that not to mention im in college. Secondly I can promise you that this car can go pretty fast, how fast do you need to go on streets anyway? as for the styling being "ugly" I have had plenty of compliments on how my car looks, I have had some mods done to it but even when I first got it I received compliments. The MPG on my car is also solid and the car definitley does sound pretty nice when you accelerate ( I have also got compliments on that ). I also have seen a lot more 4-Cylinders around than V6 or V8 so they are obviously doing quite decent when it comes to how many have been sold. This car is still better looking, handles better and is faster than the average car on the road. This is all just my personal opinion, call bullshit on it or whatever you want but this is why I got a 4-Cylinder Camaro. Ive always wanted a Camaro and will no doubt upgrade to the higher trim once I'm through with college.

I've owned a 2015 Eco Boost Mustang, a 2017 5.0 Mustang GT and now a 2019 2.0 turbo Camaro and I've loved them all, it just comes down to what you want. the Camaro looks amazing and with a simple tune you can easily get 300 HP to the wheels. Now that's not the 450 HP from the SS or 420 HP from the GT but most people would not be able to use that 400+ HP to potential. I think the turbo Camaro is awesome and for $22,000 you cant beat it.

My, my, my how jaded we have become Joe. Since when is 0-60 in 5.1 an afterthought? How 275hp & 295ftlbs of torque the rental, budget engine? No, you didn’t exactly say that but this is a hell of a nice Camaro. My guess is you can pick one of these up for $25K or less?? I like it. Put the V8 out of your head when considering this 2.0 turbo. This is one of my favorite engines and look how many manufacturers agree. VW will stick a 2.0 turbo in anything!!! I rented a turbo camaro convertible this past weekend and loved it so much that Im watching this video. No, this car would never replace my M3 nor my X6, but it was super zippy and didn't disappoint on the road trip. Was able to cruise at a stable 70mph on the highway and easily slam the gas to skirt to 100mph+ to overtake people easily. On top of that, the phone system/carplay is impressive so I was easily able to have a phone conversation with the top down cruising at 90mph. The person I was talking to said they heard me clear and the noise cancelation cancels all the wind noise. The car is great for cruising on the weekend even if it isn't a track day monster. I think Chevy did a good job with this car.

The 2019 Camaro Turbo WORKS ! Not only do you have a lighter car, but you have the HP that a V6 would. Plus, "the game" has changed. A lotta buyers want 'visual' so "HP/TRQ" don't play a factor in purchasing. Clean slate on this version.

Hi guys, I think the 4 cylinders Camaro (and mustang as well) are designed for the European market, where roads are very very much narrower and corners are really sharp.
Also, consider fuel pricing and ownership taxes... in Italy a 450 hp car costs about 7000 euros per year in ownership taxes! Yes, I know, it sounds incredible, but so it is...
So in Italy for example we are really happy in having a chance of getting a Camaro that is lighter and less powerful, because it better fits our reality.
Just for you to make your considerations, the 275hp Camaro costs 1000 euros per year in taxes. As you can see there is a huge difference compared to the V8!

I just bought a Riverside Blue Metallic 2019 1LS with a 6-spd manual last month and I couldn’t be happier. Drove it up from New Jersey dealership where I bought it to Massachusetts (a little over 300 miles) and managed to get 28 mpg. The V6 may have more horsepower but the turbo 4 has more torque, plus the added benefit of less weight in the front end, with the car weighing in at around 3300 pounds and some change. The 6-spd works excellent thru the torque bands and is precise for what it is. I looked at EcoBoost Mustangs and Hemi Challengers but the insurance surcharges plus the excise taxes where I live would’ve killed my budget, plus neither of those cars in my area had the colors or transmission I wanted and/or exceeded my budget (dealers in the Northeast typically don’t discount new or used). Regardless of how other people feel about it to me this is fun to drive-I think of it as an Americanized Nissan 240 SX/Silvia-one Nissan should’ve sent stateside but didn’t.

Not everyone wants or needs the power of the 455 HP LT1 SS or the track burning gut wretching crap in your pants scary power of the 650 HP ZL1-1LE. So yes the 275 HP turbo is a good choice at a reasonable price point for those that want a more civilized sports car while still experiencing extremely good ride and handling. And for 2019 for the first time ever you can equip the turbo 4 with the 1LE track package which means you get many of the track ready goodies that come with big brother ZL1-1LE giving it far more bite and character than the standard package. And with a 0 to 60 mph time of 5.4 seconds it's nothing to sneeze at. So bottom line is you get a lot of fun and bang for the buck with Junior while also saving some money at the pump as a daily commuter.

May-haps you can review a 1LE Track Performance Package and give us your perception of the difference in body roll and grip in tight corners. The Camaro chassis is supposedly great in standard trim, but even minimal body roll, for me, is a drag around town with all the U-turns. Basically, is it $4500 worth of flatness? And, does the V8 turn the Camaro into a boat, without the 1LE package?

The 2.0 turbo was introduced in 2016 when the 6th gen was introduced. And the LS3 has not been an option since the 5th gen from 2010-2015. And there is no “LS1” trim. There is an LS, 1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 1SS, 2SS, and ZL1

Another amazing video from my guy Joe!
I've never been a fan of the front fascia of the Camaro but it looks simply beautiful on this trim.
The interior in my opinion is in the top 5 best looking designs for a sports car. I do not like the location of the vents nor do I favor the lack of visibility of windshield but I like this interior over the mustang.
The price seems strange for a car with horse power no where near 300. I guess it's worth it but it seems like people are paying more for the name than anything else.
Any who love the design but I would only get it if it was cheaper.

I just purchased a 2022 Camaro RS 2.0 Turbo with 6speed manual, and it's great. We need to keep this in perspective... I purchased a V6 Firebird/Camaro off the showroom floor in 2002, and that engine had 200 HP and 225 pounds of torque... This 2.0 has 275 HP, and 295 pounds of torque. I have all the power I need as a Dad getting away from the kids for a bit.

I just leased the 2020 Camaro 1LT. While I wanted the ZL1, my dad (GM Car Sales manager) talked me into the 1LT. I definitely will be buying the ZL1 at the end of my 4 year lease but for being 25 and saving for a wedding and house this was the much more affordable option and has plenty of power for city dwellers.

I live in germany and GM sells only 2.0 Turbo and v8 camaros over here and right now i decided to go with a turbo camaro and so far i can tell you its an amazing ride. Would i prefer the v8 over a turbo? Well honestly sure but it costs alot more for 'just' the sound since you (or i) can very rarely use the power the v8 can provide.
As a daily driver owning the full spec camaro i can tell you its a blessing. No car in germany can compare to what you get for the money. Most of them lose by just looks.
I would not want to own a camaro with a base trim however. Im pretty glad that, unless you count the grey imports that where crashed in usa once, GM only sells the full package camaro as both 2.0 Turbo and v8.

Hello Mr. Raiti. 1.) Here in Detroit we too have been talking about some mistakes regarding the Camaro. Somewhat surprisingly, the Challenger continues to out-sell Camaro. The 2.0 LTG? I "grenaded" the turbo in my 2014 ATS. Ceramic particulate found in #4. However, I find raging on the turbo a real kick because of the low end torque. 2.) I am hopeful that the 2020 Mustang HPP adds new interest in SCCA Trans-Am allowing younger generation weekend racers to have fun. (Add cage and Harness.) 3.) Have you ever been to the Woodward Dream Cruise? The week before, and leading up to the third Saturday in August? Bring your "crew" and family. Additionally, last observation: I would like to point out cruising Woodward IS alive, it has just evolved into more modern hatchbacks and current production Detroit iron. The lead sleds, 40's, 50s, 60s, & 70s do still also show up on Fridays and Saturdays. Tony, 64.

At Denver altitude combined with weight difference, lbs/hp is nearly a wash between the 2.0 and 3.6L V6. That's why I considered the 2.0T given the price difference and the slightly better gas mileage and future tuning options. Both engines have to be revved to get horsepower out of them. I wonder if they'll try a 2.7L variant from the truck line. Right now it appears the 2.0L is dead for the 2024 model year.

Fun daily commute, good fuel economy, with a large aftermarket to test and tune. 2019 is not the first year of the 2.0 turbo. I park the V8 during the work week and drive the 4 banger to work daily, 38k miles with zero mechanical issues and it the 2.0 turbo is a suprisingly fun daily driver. Cost per mile of commute is where the 2.0t shines.

Perspective from the Australian market: Camaros are sold here, converted to RHD here in Oz. However, only V8 models are offered. When the 2015 Mustangs were sold as factory RHD in Oz, Ford Australia's initial order was for 2000 Ecoboosts and 2000 GT's.
They quickly found that Oz buyers weren't interested in the T4, and waiting lists ballooned for the GT while T4's remained unsold. I don't know about the USA market, but here in Oz, muscle cars have to have a V8 to have any chance of selling in decent numbers.

I just got my 19 Camaro 1LT and works just fine. I guess, it depends on what the driver or owner is looking for. 275hp is as good as V6. My minivan is V6 but it only has 266hp, but works the same. I actually feel more power with this 2.0L than other V6 cars. If the driver is power and speed conscious, then go for higher engine size. What do you expect for a 2.0L turbo with a base price of 27-28k? Dont expect a luxurious interior. This is not a luxury sport car. Those are just eye-candies. It works for me pretty well.

How in gods name did they think that front end redesign was good looking. That’s just fugly in comparison to the mustang.

Raiti's Rides I mean how does a redesign like that go through all the higher ups at Chevrolet without anyone saying “that’s absolutely hideous”?

4 cylinders mostly sounds like a vacuum/lawnmower, v6 sounds like a prepubescent raspy v8, and then the v8 just makes you jizz in the pants.

This would have worked really well in the late 2000's during the gas crisis. I don't see anything wrong with it besides it not being a true V8 muscle car. I'm sure die hard American muscle fans are gonna hate it. Would be a really good track Camaro.
