I noticed this with binge eating. It's the behavior that needs addressing: the urge to overeat. It's not even about the food.

Absolutely. Nothing to do with the food. It's all about the anxiety or unhappiness or fear that you want to suppress using food

This has been true in my own case. After the war I began self-medicating. I gradually moved to less and less destructive substances with no difference in either the compulsion, or satisfaction. I went from drinking liquor, to drinking light beer, to smoking weed, to ingesting CBD isolates. It's non-psychoactive, and yet it scratches that itch. It also has some minor health benefits. I also went from smoking cigarettes to using a vape which, admittedly, isn't great; but a study by the Royal College of Physicians found it to be ~95% LESS unhealthy than cigarettes. There are nicotine-free alternatives as well, which will be my next major step.
We all have our own triggers and responses. Caring for yourself means choosing those options which are least destructive to your mental and physical health.
I hope you're all faring well on your journeys.

Cliche from the 80's: It is not what you eat. It is what's eating you.
