So glycogen doesn’t store “carbs” in the muscles, it stores itself, then converts itself into glucose for energy? It’s misleading to say that it helps to store carbs for people that actually wants to know in depth how it works, great vid
So timing is important right? Do weight training to empty glycogen store in muscle, then eat. So the carbohydrates eaten will less likely to be stored in the fat and stored in muscle.
Hey Ismail Wahab, great question, I didn't get into the molecular structure of glycogen in this video, as I tried to keep it really simple, so I probably confused you. But, a glycogen molecule is basically a large molecule made of small glucose molecules linked together. So, as glycogen is broken down, it is basically releasing the small glucose molecules to be used for energy production.
Hey, you are doing great work, very useful information, I'm a subscriber of your channel. however, you should release more and more videos covering variety of knowledge say training, diet, supplements, habits, general fitness etc. Which will definitely boost views and subscriptions. And of course that would be very helpful for lots of people out there. Thanks..!!
Hey Hitesh Marvaniya, thanks for the suggestions. I am trying to create videos on a variety of topics, but freeing up the time to do more videos is my biggest issue right now. Thanks for checking out the video.
The amount of Fructose in your bloddstream/liver determines how much and how fast Glycogen will be produced. Also Taurine and Leucine contribute to the storage of glycogen, especially int he muscle tissue. The amount of glycogen that can be stored is not set, especially for the muscle mass. Fast twitch dominated athletes mostly have bigger muscle groups and bigger cellular structure and intercellular matrix to store more stuff, including glycogen. Slow twitch based athletes have the tendency to store less glycogen, since they run more on blood glucose and fatty acids. Another important point is that you can't produce enough glycogen to fill all your depleted muscles in one day. 1gr of glycogen can only produce 1kcal, since it always bound to 3gr of water. So to get 2000kcal of Glycogen, you would need to gain 2kg of Glycogen plus 4lt of water! If following a normal diet. this can take anywhere from a week to 20 days. I like the Video, enough and easy to digest information for the casual watcher, who otherwise wouldn't know or understand it. Cheers!
I am taking a break from eating a keto diet (long story!) and find that I very easily fall back into ketosis even when I am eating carbs. Is this because my glycogen stores are fully depleted and never get a chance to fully refil? If so how would I go about restoring my glycogen stores so that I don't go into ketosis as easily?
If a muscle in my arm stored some glycogen and the muscles in my legs needed it, would it share it with my legs, or is it only burned in the muscle storing it? I'm guessing the latter, "local storage" only.
What if I come from a 6 month cut and don't want to bulk after? Eating at maintainance replenishes glycogene? Or should I eat extra 300 cals for 2-4 days.
For resistance training you need the opposite of what everybody else is doing you need carbohydrate like a cereal the best cereal is shredded wheat or frosted me wheats or
Hey Johnny B, great question. I have read many articles/books/papers that say your body can increase the amount of glycogen it stores, but they never discuss the biology (what exactly happens in the body) behind it. Without knowing what exactly happens in the body, I do believe you can increase glycogen storage, because the body is unbelievable at adapting to its environment. So, the more you train/workout, your body makes adaptions, for instance, as you train more and more, cells in the body develop more mitochondria. Mitochondria is where the body takes food molecules and makes atp molecules, which are basically cellular fuel. So, I believe, as you train more and more, the body will adapt and store more glycogen. Hopefully that answers your question.
Or you can switch to a ketogenic diet. Burn off glycogen stores and your liver will start converting body fat into ketones. Once your body is in ketosis, it requires a very little amount of glycogen and will get energy from fat cells and dietary fat. Most peoples body fat stores are much more than 2000 calories, so once your metabolism switches to fat burning (ketosis) instead of sugar burning, you will have a seemingly endless supply of energy from your own body stores. Other added benefits to this other than increased sustained energy without eating are lowered appetite, increased ATP production, less insulin in your blood, increased mental clarity and of course increased body fat loss and muscle definition.
What's missing here is every time (YOU) panic your body puts out to must Glycogen into the blood stream. That rushes to the brain, which see an overload, hypertension.
Hey bro.. Muscle glycogen and liver glycogen sotred capacity is same for every person.. Like a 20 yrs old guy Or 60 yrs old man The sotred capacity is same for everyone ???
Hey VAMSI SADHANA, not all carbs will be converted into glycogen...some carbs will be used for immediate energy needs, some may be stored as glycogen, and some may be converted to and stored as fat. This all depends on several different factors.
Hey Zantar95, muscle glycogen serves as a means of fuel, or energy, for movement of the muscles, muscle protein is structural, however in extreme cases it can be used as a means of fuel. If your muscles run out of glycogen, fat will then be used as fuel. Again, if in an extreme situation, no glucose, no glycogen, no fat, then body will start to break down proteins to use as fuel. This is one of the reasons long distance runners are so skinny, and do not have a lot of bulging muscles. Hope that answers your questions. Take care my friend.
Whats Up Dude Thanks for answering! So what would happen if after weight lifting you consumed only protein and no carbs/glucose? Does muscle glycogen serve any purpose for building muscle?
Hey Zantar95, it does not directly serve any purpose for building muscle, however, indirectly it allows the body to have some storage "fuel", which prevents the body from having to breakdown and use any protein at all for fuel/energy. If you only consumed protein after a workout...it depends. Depending on how intense the workout was, how much energy the body used, how much glycogen remains, if any fat is available (is this person lean with very little fat for fuel), if the body needs more glucose in the bloodstream. So, ideally the protein consumed would go to the muscle building process, but, in some cases it can be used a source for fuel/energy. It's always good to have protein or a protein shake after a workout, but its not a bad idea to have some fruit, and maybe some nuts or part of an avocado (healthier fats). Everyone's body is different, you have to learn what works best for your body and your lifestyle.
What happens if you eat so much carbs that, you fill up both your muscle-glycogen tank AND your liver glycogen tank? What happens with the excess glycogen?
Hey Maxim, so, once the glycogen tanks are full, the body will take the excess carbs or glucose and store it as fat. There actually is no excess glycogen, only excess glucose. You may be interested in this short video I did...th-cam.com/video/AA0QMn9VfoE/w-d-xo.html.
Hiii .. Im really confused with slow carbs... For fast carbs wich called high glycemic index will spike insulin coz it rise blood sugar so high and thus lead to fat storage coz muscle and kidney fed up... Now i talk bout slow carbs wich called low glycemic index .. They say it take time to be absorpted.. So the food not digest?? Or what?? And i wonder bout carb loading for runners.. The slow carbs they eat.. It not make them fat.. So body direct keep it as glycogen in muscle and liver and not in fat cells?? Plz help i need answer
Hello, let me try to answer your question. The main difference between fast and slow carbs is the food source. For instance when you eat a doughnut it has a lot of sugar in it. Sugar is a carbohydrate. Because the doughnut does not have a lot of other nutrients such as vitamins, minerals or fiber, and the main carbohydrate the doughnut contains is sugar, the body can digest (break down) and absorb the doughnut rather quickly. If you eat a banana, which also has a lot of sugar in it, it takes the body longer to digest and absorb it, because it has many other nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber and other types of carbohydrates in it. As far as runners go, yes most of them can load up on carbs and not get fat, but that is because they burn off so many calories. I have a video where I discuss slow and fast carbs called "Types of Carbs" which I will link here...th-cam.com/video/uTi9wcNCoic/w-d-xo.html I also have a video where I discuss glycemic index and glycemic load, which I will link here...th-cam.com/video/nXyIaDgTBAk/w-d-xo.html There are 2 things I tell people to try to do. #1. try to eat a majority of your foods from foods that have a lot of nutrients in them, and #2. don't overeat, I used to be really overweight, and my biggest problem was that I loved food, and I would always over eat. If you have any other questions, let me know.
Time Noakes was an author and long distance runner who was a pioneer in the high carb diet for atheletes. He even invented the gel packs runners use. He has now changed stances as his high carb diet gave him type 2 diabetes, despite being in very good shape and very lean. I encourage you to watch some of his videos, he now advocates a high fat low to zero carb diet for sustained energy.
when you eat carbs or sugar the body will have insulin in the blood , to burn fat the body has to convert the fat to ketons , insulin prevent the body to get in the keto state , so it will not burn fat fast + sugar is just empty calories that makes you hungry (addicted) for more sugar and carbs is just complex sugar that takes more time to digest , to get in keto you have to cut sugar totally , you will fill sluggish the first couple of days because there is no enough sugar for power but there is still enough insulin to prevent keto but after you get through the sugar withdrawal you will be too energetic and will not crave food as much, you can fast or keto diet to reach that state
Eiad Alkhayat i think you are mixing things up, no one is talking about refine sugar. When you eat glucose you BURN that glucose, if you overload with glucose it get stored as glycogen NOT FAT. When you then overload on glycogen then it turn to fat. That is three huge fase before glucose get to the fat stage unlike fat diet where you eat fat that goes straight to the fat storage and burn fat. It's a garbage way to do things IMO. Only reason it works is because fatty food are more filling at low volume. If you have self control then eating carbs will cut you weight as well
i didnt say when you eat glucose it turns to fat , all am saying is when you have insulin in the blood the body is kinda blocked from burning the fat that you already have in your body , just try and cut carbs for a while , you will see that you wont get hungry as much
i have tried, ive done keto several times and mainly ate ALOT of nuts. Its good and fufilling but men gaining those fatty cheeks is not worth it. Its better to fuel up on carbs and workout while you burn the carbs, carb store then fat.
