I just checked the Dieppe to Newhaven price for a car + trailer it is £178. I'm off to France in a couple of weeks and the Newhaven Dieppe route seems to be the cheapest. Eg £340 return from Poole to Cherbourg, £151 from Newhaven. £240 return from Poole to Cherbourg with a motorbike and £77 from Newhaven. Worth the extra bit of driving.
I did this last July when my dad passed away while living in France. The crossing is longer but a lot cheaper. I saw it as a well earned rest on the trip down.
You've obviously got a gem of a Fiat 500 (or 1.2) at 44mpg as good as the Bonneville. Sounds like you'd be better transplanting the Fiat engine into the Bonnie frame! And at 190,600 miles it certainly pays to keep that motor running, head out on the highway! Great soundtracks. Fine accoounting there.
Hi Freddie & Monica, the Renault cars you've seen on the road take part to the "4L trophy" which is made for the French stutents. They drive from France to Marakech to provide school materials to the Moroccan children. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/4L_Trophy Great to watch you travelling, have a nice trip !
Just started watching your videos and they seem to be right up my street! As a retired Police traffic officer myself with extensive experience of the European Police and their attitude towards British car drivers with trailers, I had to watch some of it with my hand over my eyes, but great fun and wonderful watch with a cup of English tea!
All hail to that tough little Fiat. All the fiat doubters. How long will u keep it 😁. Thank you for all this it brightens up my day and gives me hope. I have driven several times to southern Spain and whilst going south, I have come across a train extending for miles of R4s and 2 CVS all looking like rally vehicles crowded with stickers and spare wheels. On one particular occasion, we stopped in Algeciras and the locals told me that they have organised “raids” to the Moroccan deserts. Truly a fantastic and nostalgic sight. Tough little beasts. All cruising along at 55 -60mph. .
Really enjoyed all three returning home vids, the combination of scenery, music and commentary has been wonderfully entertaining. Best wishes to you both.
Beautifully presented Vlog, I don't believe I've ever seen such a relaxed journey, you definitely turned it into a traveling holiday, time & Monica's planning are the lesson's learnt. Welcome home 😊
Hey Freddie, inspired by your channel just spent a week in Tenerife with the family, visiting many of the places you talk about, and spend a fantastic day on the bike with Adam at Easyrider. Can't wait to go back. Thanks so much I would never have even thought about it if it hadn't been for your inspiration.
Just loving these videos, Freddie and Monika. Soooo stylish, watchable and inspirational. You guys know what's worth spending money on - good food, good accommodation, whilst getting around in modest but interesting and still stylish vehicles. Keep it up!
To be brief Freddie this and your other vlogs have been outstanding, thoroughly enjoyable and informative. So jealous of the weather you've experienced, we've have had to fire up the central heating here in S. Wales in the evening and as I write this on a Sunday morning a news message pops up on my PC saying Britain is hotter than Lisbon today, well it's not here as it's raining and is forecast rain locally for the next few days. On another note visiting the towns or villages as you have or on your return for one day/evening is very much as we do as our choice of travel now is cruising, we get a taste of so many different countries and locations, just love it, looking forward to the Norwegian fjords up to the Artic Circle in late August, can't guarantee much sun though? Once again thanks to you both for sharing.
Great to see St Jean De Luz, I stayed there for a fortnight as a teenager with my parents in the 70’s. It was a truly memorable trip as we traveled through France overnight on a car transporter train, not sure as they offer that service any more!
Nothing better on a Sunday morning than getting back from the gym around 07.00 getting a coffee and sitting down and watching Freddie and Monica, fantastic video as usual and Monica your camera work is exceptional, welcome home, can’t wait for more videos, got to be the best on TH-cam surely. Thank you so much .
I feel so much like I'm riding along that I want to go back an d check if I've forgotten something. The music just fits all the time. Will Look forward to what's next. I'm going to start drinking with so many goodbyes to captivating places. Cheerio.
I'm not an expert but one of the secrets to your Fiat's success (mileage, fuel economy, towing capability) could be the fact that it's a manual transmission. I doubt if a CVT or even a traditional slushbox can handle as much workload. Enjoyed this episode as usual.
This is a very good point and I completely agree! I was told that the 1.2 engine and manual box is the most simple, basic setup in the Fiat 500 (and also by far the most reliable)
When I first saw how point blank that Fiat was completely overloaded my first thought was there's no way that automatic transmission is going to live in that thing... Sure enough there was a split second in an episode and I saw what appeared to be a manual shifter....that's how they made it back and forth without grenading anything transmission wise😁🥃......🚗_🏍️💼👜💼🧳🧳🎒
The Fiat 500 CVT maybe not but I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Delica D5 with a 2.4L petrol with CVT (same running gear as an Outlander) and I regularly tow around 800kg to 1200kg with the occasional towing of a mini excavator that is 1.6tons all up. The Fiat 500 with manual trans is definitely becoming known as a reliable car and I'm thinking it will be our next second car.
Hi, an amazing trip all round , a great way to spend 8 months , fun all the way and some sun shine . How you two , put these together and the effervescent approach , should be bottled and sold on every filling station , it is like Redex for humans , never leave home with out it . Thanks for all your videos Freddie and Monika ,take care .😎👍
Thanks for the adventure guys. Loved every video. What’s an adventure if you don’t stretch the rules and regulations a wee bit!. Great fun and look forward to the next adventure. Cheers.
I came across you guys by accident on your trip out to Tenerife and have been watching ever since. Its been a great few months following the adventure. Cant wait to see the next madtrip. Well done and thanks. A few coffees was the least i could do.
Absolutely first class three part video, making your trip back to Blighty both interesting and informative. You have given us some great hotel and apartment options to consider. You have a real talent and great presentation style, keep them coming. Thanks.
Hi Freddie and Monica, what an amazing 8 months of sharing your adventures we have loved every video from the moment you left to your route home. Looking forward to seeing your next adventures back in the U.K. thank you for a great 8 months 🙏 watching your road trip has got me excited now about our vespa road trip from Portsmouth to Northern Spain in July can’t wait to get there after two years have having you move re covid 🛵
I know I've praised before, but (and I've paused at 12:22 on the beach...cos dinner time in kiwiland)..your vids are literally addictive..and that's beacuse you have the magic...the renaults... the room..the info..shifting into the song (perfect) and the snapshot pieces of streets and sweet and interesting bikes and cars parked up..(thanks for the Guzzi!!)..keep going guys..the production value here with just the two of you? It's just wicked. And entertaining as hell. And I'm only halfway through. Take care, travel safe, and thanks to you both.
I stopped using the ferry from UK to France years ago. Now it is the tunnel every time, pick late at night and the prices are reasonable (depending on time of year), plus just 35 minutes crossing time, 45 minute check-in, super fast disembarkation and as you don't leave your car, no expensive eats and drinks. Total no brainer in my opinion!
stumbled upon this channel because I was looking up reviews for the first gen street triple - so glad I clicked on that video. super nice and entertaining videos, and props to whoever picks the music!
Thank you both for taking us along on your adventures. I now look at the Fiat 500 with new found respect. FIAT may wonder about a sudden surge in demand! I loved Freddie's reaction to the cost of the final ferry. May I ask if you considered using the Tunnel?

Hi Guys, great vid, it looks like you intercepted competitors in "The 4L Trophy". A fun charity trip in Renault 4 cars from France ro Marrakesh & back. The competitors fill their 4L cars with educational or medical charitable goods & drive them to the Red Cross etc in Marrakesh, and drive back. 2023 Freddie? Mais qui!!
Crazy to see that you are back in Britain again. Remember the episodes of you getting to Tenerife. Time flies. Thank you for the videos and wish you the best.
Another perfect start to my Sunday morning, thank you Freddie and Monica. That was a beautiful road trip and I so agree with your observations about ‘space’ in France and Spain compared to England. I wonder how life in Ipswich is going to feel after all the wonderful places you have been over the last 8 months. As always, love your content and looking forward to new adventures.
Hi Freddie, I've really enjoyed watching your adventures, so much so I feel sad to be back like I've actually been with you. Keep it coming, it a great interesting watch.
from the UK but live in the States, all the smaller cars seem to labelled as more commuter orientated vehicles, but drivers may also feel intimidated by the sheer size of the average American Vehicle on the road, compared to these smaller more frugal size vehicles even though they are equally competent of covering high mileages
Beautiful places yet again and fantastic cinematography. You and Monika have been the best viewing on our TV for the past 8 months and for that we thank you🥰 Can’t wait for your next adventure’s, “ Freddie gets lost all over Europe “ and “Monika avoids every farm between UK and Lithuania” 😊😊 Safe and joyful travels wherever you go
Lovely videography by the innocent, shy Monica, who has a great sense of humour with the occasional giggle, to fill in and make the whole journey very personable and entertaining. Also, she is a patient and caring human being putting up with the enigmatic David Attenborough II! She also looks very lovely in the flowing summery dress. :) Perhaps we may see more of her!!
The ferry from Scotland to Northern Ireland cost us £350 for a car and driver and one passenger. Return. 2 hour journey. That was off peak in April. Mental.
Nice editing on this video. Punchy and clips changing with the music. Taking the trouble to film the car driving from the outside. This all makes a big difference.Really enjoyed it.
Now i've got my answer, I'm glad you could see with your own eyes the beauty of St Jean de Luz, i was conquered too the first time i came there at the age of 20, born in Britanny, there was a familiar taste of it (atlantic salt) but with something else, spanish probably, or rather a mix of both France and Spain, i love le Pays Basque, i was there the 2nd of May, attempting to finish my crossing of the pyrénean passes but it was still so cold then that i had to give up even before le tourmalet pass, glad you could enjoy the sun and the beach. In case you both decide to spend some time there, don't miss the mountainous part of Pays basque, it's lovely too, different atmosphere, beautiful villages too, i think of st jean pied de port, one amongst many, south-west of France is a region where i could easily live...and probably will someday. Thanks for paying attention and putting in perspective this notion of beauty and space available, at your age, i was unable to see and understand it, it changed, now i see this beauty in its singularity, not everywhere is like that, i can tell now after travelling almost the entire planet, i'm not meaning it's better, just that it exists and deserves a fresh look
I really enjoyed your journey to and from Tenerife. I felt part of your adventure and the editing was amazing. Well done and i hope to be part of your next adventure.
Glad you got back ok, that poor little car did you proud! Monika finds some lovely places to stay, have really enjoyed your vlogs & look forward to your future adventures 🚗🏍️😎S&J 🐘
Your timing is superb. Walking down as you said ‘a beautiful Spanish town ‘ as you passed a garage door covered in graffiti 🤣. I can’t decide if it’s pure Allen Partridge or deliberate comic genius.
Great trip wrap up Freddie and Monica. I always look forward to Sunday mornings and watching you have way more fun than me. I had to laugh when you said France had so much space. If you want to see space come across the pond to America. It’s a 30 mile ride for me to just get to work each day. And then 30 back. But it’s through some on the most beautiful horse farms you’ll ever see. Your going home videos have made my wife want to run around Europe in a fiat 500. I but I think I would rather do it in that Ferrari Dino 😎. Enjoy being home in the UK. Can’t wait to see the next adventure .
Having had a lazy day looking for my next bike, I came across your channel (Royal Enfield) wow…. It’s been great watching. Look forward to your next adventure. Good one 🤘
Great film. The Fiat's mpg was very impressive considering it's a petrol and it was loaded and towing. As soon as you depart from a standard car-only ticket the Ferry companies take you to the cleaners. Lots of (UK) people keep their caravans and trailers in France to avoid this penalty. Why don't you ask Harley Davidson UK if they'll lend you a tourer then Monika would be comfortable enough to come with you on your summer trips. (I'm worried the photography is going to take a dive if you're doing it on your own!) Happy days.
Absolutely loved the series! Top quality production, educational and entertaining. I’ve noted a couple of places to visit too. Where next? Can’t wait. Cheers to you both.
Great video both of you, what a team. I’ve really enjoyed your series in Tenerife. Now looking forward to your next adventure. Stay safe and enjoy the next series. 😎
Having had a lazy day looking for my next bike, I came across your channel (Royal Enfield) wow…. It’s been great watching. Look forward to your next adventure. Good one
I so enjoy your vides sir fred and lady monica they cheer me right up whilst enjoying an ice cold corona extra i loved those french towns wish you could have spen longer there the renalt 4s fab i bought one for 11 quid put a clucth plate in it without dropping the bell houseing cost about 6quid my brother drove it for years ! Sad your big trip is over chin chin !
Tinged with sadness at this one coming to an end guys I long to escape the UK and watching your series was fantastic can't wait to see what happens next brilliantly done .😊👌
Thanks for a run down on costs, as well as a lovely video as always. Sadly you just have to grin and bear some costs like ferries if you want to get out of the country. Spain and France are beautiful countries and you did as you always do give a positive and upbeat review of everything, something I love about your videos. Glad you're both back safe.
Another great video, I have booked my return trip ferry to Holland for beginning of June, taking the Tiger up to Denmark, then back 3 weeks later for the ABR festival at Ragley Hall Love the tunes you add Ian
Really enjoyed your three road trip 'vids' the thing that really jumps out at me on all of them is the lack of traffic on the roads and amazing scenery, it made me want to throw a leg over my bike and head back to Europe ASAP, looking forward to your up coming European tour on the Bonneville.
Question: from a total cost perspective (including the depreciation of the car and your own comfort) wouldn’t it be better to take the ferry straight from UK to Spain (Santander?) and skip the French part?
I just checked the Dieppe to Newhaven price for a car + trailer it is £178. I'm off to France in a couple of weeks and the Newhaven Dieppe route seems to be the cheapest. Eg £340 return from Poole to Cherbourg, £151 from Newhaven. £240 return from Poole to Cherbourg with a motorbike and £77 from Newhaven. Worth the extra bit of driving.

These three videos are brilliant, as good as any TV show.
Ah the good old A10 motorway, passes us some 15 km away SW of Poitiers. There is so much good stuff in Nouvelle Aquitaine.

I loved Freddie's reaction to the cost of the final ferry. May I ask if you considered using the Tunnel?
I love the videos you guys have made from your time in Tenerife. Just one idea, on your next big trip, buy a set of roof bars and a luggage box to your Fiat 500 :) All the best for the next project!
Thanks Erik! I’ve started looking into roof boxes- I’m very close to buying one
@@FreddieDobbs But remember that will kill your fuel consumption.
Be aware of how much height the box will add, if you're going to continue using multistorey car parks and other height-sensitive facilities.
Why not buy an old large diesel estate ? Probably pay for itself in mpg savings and reduced ferry charges!
Unless you go for a really old diesel, you'll be looking at the unholy trinity of DMF/DPF/EGR, any one of which has the power to wipe out any savings. Then you'll find yourself banned from an increasing number of city centres. Include the residual value of a 500 with 190K+ on the clock and the equation stops making sense.

I'm amazed at the Fiat as here in the US it has a bit of a negative reputation at least among some people. Great video!

Can't wait for the next trip.

Lovely Vlogs of the journey home. You find great places along the way to stay Minika.
I love watching these videos…especially that little 500…exactly the same as my wife’s car…working it’s little socks off. Stay safe you too 👍😎
Really glad you enjoyed it, Alan! I have no idea how the Fiat does it!😆😍🚗
Well done. Excellent Sunday morning viewing!
Thank you so much, this has been an inspiring trip.
It’s true- you do just have to suck up the costs, have a glass of wine and move on😆
Thank you Dale
Take care, enjoyed ur journey
ABSOLUTLY BRILLIANT you 2. Look forward to your next adventures. 10 out of 10.
Brilliant video. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Wonderful as always!
Another great video, I have booked my return trip ferry to Holland for beginning of June, taking the Tiger up to Denmark, then back 3 weeks later for the ABR festival at Ragley Hall
Love the tunes you add
Ian
Brilliant trip! I enjoyed every minute of it.
Great end to your adventure. It has been so enjoyable following it. Thank you. Huge respect for the little FIAT.
Really enjoyed your three road trip 'vids' the thing that really jumps out at me on all of them is the lack of traffic on the roads and amazing scenery, it made me want to throw a leg over my bike and head back to Europe ASAP, looking forward to your up coming European tour on the Bonneville.
I have just been Kenilworth / Ilkley/Blackburn / ilkley / Kenilworth - 500 miles, £160. Plus about £230 hotel cost.
Nice one Freddie and Monika, really enjoyed the road trip home....
Very well done and interesting video. Thanks.
Francja Elegancja. Włochy i Szwajcaria też są piękne.
Love your vlogs always very stylish and good to watch. Shame your tenerife excursions are over.
Brilliant watch
I do like a separate room for the loo. I think it's just a little more advanced :)
Another flawless relaxing informative video from you both, keep to the same format your onto a winner.
Some cities can retain their heritage quite well...👍

Question: from a total cost perspective (including the depreciation of the car and your own comfort) wouldn’t it be better to take the ferry straight from UK to Spain (Santander?) and skip the French part?
