All the clever comments on here about who were the main allied fighters in the battle of Caen. I suggest you look at the war dead in the cemeteries surrounding Caen.
I am a Brit but I am not going down the road of one or two others by playing down what one side or the other did, they were Allies and brothers in arms.
The Allies in the battle for Caen suffered 83,000 dead or wounded. Read history the British army including the Canadians took on the bulk of the German forces in Normandy and prevailed.

Caen was south of Juno and Sword beaches so naturally the Canadians and Brits were responsible for fighting the Germans defending it. They were up against two Panzer divisions, both experienced. The undulating open countryside lent itself to tank warfare, especially if like the Germans were initially, you could position yourself on a ridge. Monty took the decision to grind the Germans down with artillery and airpower.
The Americans in the west faced equally tough fighting but in a different way. They were fighting in the bocage, i.e. small fields surrounded by tall hedgerows growing on top of walls. Their tanks couldn't get through so the Germans would mount machine guns on the opposite sides of the fields and mow down GIs trying to break through the hedges. They overcame the hedges after about a month by attaching hedge cutters to the front of their tanks.
If you look at an hour by hour animation of both the American and the British / Canadian fronts you will see they made very similar progress. All allies fought bravely. Operation Cobra is when things changed dramatically when the Americans broke through around the south of the Contentin Peninsular. One reason they were able to do this is because the battle for Caen kept the panzers occupied. That's not to take anything away from the Americans who fought as competently and bravely as they do now.
People often marvel at how quickly Patton was able to sweep around Brittany and back round towards Fallaise. He was obviously a brilliant attacking general, but the Germans had little fight left in them in Normandy by the time he took command.

The only way we SAW the war in those days was in the newsreels at the movies, Pictures in the newspapers, wounded in the hospitals, or relatives, friends and neighbors getting a little mail from the front! RADIO and others, with men in these battles, rarely writing but giving hope to families and friends At home! It was VERY DIFFERENT, AND VERY CLOSE, BUT FEW COMPLAINED! We defended our country, our men and women in the military, we gave blood , saved the tinfoil fom gum wrappers and ANYTHING ELSE THE MILITARY MIGHT NEED! Nylon was for parachutes, so women painted their legs, no hose! did a lot of things very differently , but without much complaining because in those days of a VERY DIFFERENT WAR, little things might make a BIG DIFFERENCE TO A SOLDIER ON THE FRONT! WWII was very real, terrible, close, heartbreaking for MILLIONS OF FAMILIES, but we did our best on the homefront!
I am so glad that our military are so much better protected, informed, and guided now! It's hard to imagine what it would have meant to a cold, wet soldier in a cold, damp foxhole to be able to pull up his cell and talk to his family while bullets whizzed overhead! I'm glad they can now!

According the historical research of independent (=not government-employed) historians there were 16 million German victims in WW2 (military and civilian):
      Their historical research proved that...
6 million German soldiers were killed.
But only 3 million of them were killed in combat,
whereas 3 million German soldiers were murdered as POWs.
9,4 millions German civilians were killed during WW2 (mostly women and children).
5,7 million of them were killed by starvation and total lack of medical care 1944 - 1949 during Allied occupation.
2,8 million of them (also only women and children and very old men) were murdered by Russians, Polish and Czechs during the expulsion of German civilians from the eastern parts of Germany to steal their land and cities.
0.6 million women and children were burned alive by terror air raids on German cities full of civilians
0.3 million women and girls and old people were killed by raping and butchering during the conquest and occupation of German cities.
Additionally 0.5 million ethnic Germans living outside of Germany were murdered at the end and directly after the war.

Forgive me, but I think NZ was part of the British Empire? It's not about narrow nationalism, brits v canadians, brits v australians, brits v new zealanders. We were all one. We all have common heritage and are all the source of these good things. Its that we should be celebrating. Just because comparatively recently we were betrayed into believing the brits in the 'home islands' were 'european' by quislings and traitors, does not negate that history. Indeed, during that first betrayal, about 40 years ago, it was predicted that the brits would eventually see through the lies of the politicians and get out from under the jackboot of the eu. That is what is happening today. We have a weasel of a prime minister who has tried to pull the wool over our eyes again, but whose legacy is a name like Treason May, Appeaser May, sharia May. Make no mistake we will leave the eu. The anger in the country of the duplicity of our elected quislings is very high.
One last thing about the Yanks, they were part of the British empire. They are also the ones who ended the British Empire as well. They forced 'managed decline' on us after WWII and this policy was used by our quislings to 'manage' our joining the eu. They said at the time that Britain would now be a small fish in a big pond and our interests were best served by abandoning our family of nations for what has become a German dominated trading block and soon to be a German controlled military force as well.

El Alamein was the first great defeat inflicted upon the Germans, fought entirely by the troops of the British Empire and a contingent of the Free French and Greeks. America sold and Britain bought. Moreover, we supplied our own artillery, trucks, armoured cars and anti-tank guns. Most of the aircraft in our airforce were British designed and built. Lastly, victory was paid for with the blood of British troops, and troops from India, New Zealand, Australia, Rhodesia and other parts of the Empire. Not a fucking Yank in sight. Wittmann’s last action of 3 or 4 Tigers was destroyed by the Canadian and British tanks. All German counter-attacks against the British & Canadians were repulsed. Many of the Allied attacks were stopped by the Nazis. But in the end the British and Canadians successfully pushed the Germans back in their sectors and destroyed the majority of the German armour in Normandy. Even though we may have had tanks that weren’t as good as the Tigers, we had more of them and had learned how to overcome superior German tanks.

Britain was saved by the US Army...twice! 1917/18 and 1944/45. and both were successful because of the Red Army, only.

Who told you that. The US Army played no part in saving Britain. By the time the US Army arrived in Britain half way through the war it was to bolster the man power numbers in preparation for offensive operations in Europe, along with the Canadians, Poles, Free French and others. Incidentaly the Red Army played no part in defending Britain from German invasion, played no part in keeping the Germans out of the Libyan oilfields, played no part in ousting the Germans from North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Greece, France, Holland, Belgium and Denmark, played no part in the bombing campaign that was methodically turning the German war industry into rubble, played no part in the allied convoys supplying Russia with much of its fighting capability and played no part in setting up resistance networks right across all the occupied lands.

@@tedmaxeffs - in the early stages of the war - yes. But then the Americans stepped in big time to supply the Soviets with thousands of trucks, and even re-supplied their factories with modern equipment.
