My Grandfather was "conscripted", (expected to join the party as a teacher, policeman, postal worker, etc), into the Waffen SS as a school teacher in a remote Freisian Island. He died on the retreat in a place called Stűlweissenberg, North of Lake Balaton. Now called Székesfehérvár. The whole regiment was wiped out as they had no tank support, supply lines or communications, (he was a Panzer Grenadier). My Mother only knew of his death fifteen years later..told by a surviving member of his regiment who feined death. She lived with this for all her life and killed herself, on her own, in Normandy, many, many years later. There was one other man who survived and was badly injured. Basically, anyone who was alive was bayonetted or hanged to save rounds. My Grandfather was, I believe, 44 years old and sent to the front. With 3 months training, he stood no chance. This was in the last few months of the European War, April '44, perhaps? His name was Jansen Eggers, from the Island of Sylt. I would love to have met him. There is always another side to any story. The victors always write the history books. Any information would be gladly appreciated about my Grandfather. Thank you!
@@stevecowham1017 Yeah its funny how everything changes but stays the same. My own Grandfather fought on the side of the allies in WW1, volunteered at 14 (lied about his age) and ended up in pioneer corp doing the very dangerous job if venturing out into no mans land to spy on the enemy. He was an orphan who lived in a boys home. He was taken prisoner in 17 and sent to work in a coal mine near what was then Stettin, which is known as something else and is in Poland I think. He survived and went on to have a very long army career, including service in WW2, training new recruits. My Great Grandfather was killed in action on the first day of the battle of the Somme, with the 36th Ulster Division, again WW1.

When I was working in the ER, about 15 years ago, I met a gentleman who was a member of the Fallschirmjäger. He made something like 14 combat jumps (his words), was injured on the last one and ended up recovering in Texas in a POW hospital. After the war, he went back to (West) Germany, actually worked on the German side of Kennedy's security detail during his trip to Berlin and was a German investigator for the US military police. He finally retired to my hometown, where I eventually got to meet this fascinating gentleman. Sadly, he passed away about seven years ago, and I only got to talk to him a few times. I would have loved to have sat down and listen to his life story.

Trevor N. Dupuy, a noted American military analyst, US Army Colonel, and author of numerous books and articles, studied the comparative performance of the soldiers of World War II. On average, he concluded, 100 German soldiers were the equivalent of 120 American, British or French soldiers, or 200 Soviet soldiers. “On a man for man basis,” Dupuy wrote, “German ground soldiers consistently inflicted casualties at about a 50 percent higher rate than they incurred from the opposing British and American troops under all circumstances [emphasis in original]. This was true when they were attacking and when they were defending, when they had a local numerical superiority and when, as was usually the case, they were outnumbered, when they had air superiority and when they did not, when they won and when they lost.” Other respected military historians, such as Martin van Creveld and John Keegan, have made comparable assessments. Max Boot draws a similar conclusion in his detailed book, War Made New. “Man for man,” writes this influential author and military historian, “the Wehrmacht was probably the most formidable fighting force in the world until at least 1943, if not later. German soldiers were even known for showing more initiative than the soldiers of democratic France, Britain, and the United States.
Some of this is due to Germans fighting a defensive battle in depth. They knew the ground and they were formidable in their own right. They did not have the air power or supply the allies had in Europe. The Allies were green and most units only saw first action after D-Day. My opinion is the Germans were formidable foe though they had some advantages in the defense but they could never have hoped to win. They were doomed when they invaded Russia. The soldiers fought a good fight but they had no chance of winning or competing with USA in supply or manpower. The Brits were ok but they were not a challenge to Germans alone, they needed a big brother. If Brits would have invaded Normandy alone they would not have invaded. The U.S. entering war the key to victory, period. They relieved pressure on Russians and Brits. Rating each would break down something like: German tanks 7 plus, Russian 8 plus, USA 5, Brits 5. The infantry: German 8, Russian 4 or 5, Brits 6.5, USA 7. Air: German 6, Russian 3 then 7 later, USA 9. Support units German 5 (mainly horse drawn), Russian 7, Brits 8, USA 8 plus. resources German 4, Russian 5, Brits 7, USA 8. just my opinion whats yours? Thanks!

Even the ultra-extreme NS ideologue Alfred Rosenberg was in favour of taking up Ukrainians et al. into the German forces in the East from the get-go. His appeals were ignored by Hitler again and again. As one might imagine, this attitude was even more prevalent in the Wehrmacht. Thank you!

This was true when they were attacking and when they were defending, when they had a local numerical superiority and when, as was usually the case, they were outnumbered, when they had air superiority and when they did not, when they won and when they lost.”
Other respected military historians, such as Martin van Creveld and John Keegan, have made comparable assessments.
Thanks!

The panicking Nazis were just wandering around the forests and fields east of minsk until they gave up. Thank god for the soviets. The Germans had that unbelievable confidence which couldn't shook until it was obvious they weren't the superhumans they told themselves they were.
@Supreet Virk Truthful Sikh a lot of that has been debunked by researchers. At Stalingrad they had nowhere to go. Either stay in the warm houses and fight for them as best they could or retreat into the permafrost and dig trenches and set up camp. The Germans believes especially early on that Soviet slavs were subhuman. They didn't even allow BELGIAN hardcore Nazi volunteers (wallonia) to be incorporated into the ss because they weren't properly Aryan. If the Germans we're winning in 41 with German strength why would they give captured slavs the honor of fighting with them as equals? Maybe in 44 they would have, that's around when they let wallonia legion join ss and their arrogance was quickly fading

4:50 No that is Porsche’s VW Schwimmwagen, not a Kubelwagen.
4:54 Finally some big armor; the King Tiger or PzKw VI arrives in Belgium
5:00 BMW or NSU or DKW or other brand 500 cc Motorrad?
5:13 Best shot ever of Porsche’s VW Schwimmwagen. This is a 1938 production model VW automobile with modifications to allow river use.

5:29 What is the man on the left screen carrying? Lower left, we see a belt-fed submachine gun or machine gun … a captured U.S. Browning Automatic Rifle?
5:51 these troops have paratrooper helmets and must be the Fallschirmjäger.
5:54 with automatic rifles-MP45 or StG 45, the world’s first assault rifles, named by AH himself-Sturm Gewehr. Had to slip the MP43 and MP44 past him to get it in production …

6:15 always time for bird watching!
6:18 Finally a clear shot of the VW Kubelwagen-a reinforced 1938 VW production auto …
6:29 Kubelwagen. Air-cooled motor was an advantage over the U.S. Jeep in extreme weather.
6:32 Is that the same 155 mm U.S. gun that we’ve seen so many times? Is that a sighting tube on the main barrel, even though it looks to be the same bore diameter?
6:44 Mauser Kar 98 again, with straight bolt. Gew 98? I think the Kar 98 had a turned down bolt. No, it does have the turned-down bolt.
Very bad air quality. Amazing that any one survived.
7:24 U.S. Jeep on left edge.
7:31 two of them, damaged.
7:48 is that a Kubelwagen at right screen?
7:54 U.S. transport vehicle on fire. Many Jerrycans.
Its a STG 44
Its not a British car it’s a armored m8
No he’s just smocking cigarettes

The fallschirmjäger on the AFV on the left at 5:31 has a Mk2 Sten SMG with the later pattern skeleton butt. No chance of ID'ing the belt fed (?) weapon: it would have to be an MG34 or 42, or a Browning M1919, these being the only light role belt fed MGs in the NW Europe campaign....on closer inspection... a distorted view of an MG34.
Note also what looks like a 7.92mm Gew 43 semi-automatic rifle carried by the soldier in the centre.
Thank you for sharing this.

Duty to the end.

Wie konnten wir nur den Krieg verlieren mit solchen guten Soldaten
The war was already lost at this point yet these men still found the humanity to crack smiles knowing they probably wouldn't be living much longer. The ones that did live would have ended up in one of Eisenhower's death camps dying slowly from starvation and exposure.
Better to die standing than live on your knees. I would trade my whole life to fight and die alongside these men. I can only pray I would have half the strength, tenacity, and bravery to stand with them.

I think Germany was the super power that time not russia america
A superpower that couldnt arm, fuel, feed or cloth its forces. Germany was not a superpower.
@@chrisr9380 o really may be that is the reason all so called super powers england france russia america takes 6 year to deafeat a single nation .
@Mandeep Purewal why are you being abusive just because i disagree with you. A single nation? So Germany wasnt allied with Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Japan? Think somebody is not up to scratch with their history. It may also have something to do with the fact that Britain and USA were fighting on two fronts too for most of the war.
@@chrisr9380 no im not abusing u

I noticed that all the video was taken on cloudy days, or under the trees in the forest - reminding me that the German armed forces were subject to relentless allied air attack in the last 2 years of the war.

Man after reading these comments it’s almost like everyone’s grandpa or dad was here.
I would like this more with Sound.
if you can still find a copy of Landser's "Grandpa was a sturmfurher in the SS" it is a really good backing track
Thanks for not adding some stupid music to this. Very interesting footage. Some of which you seldom see.
They're enjoying American cigarettes, which would have been sheer luxury compared to the end-war Wehrmacht cigarettes they would have been lucky to be issued. This was a huge deal even if they didn't do the damage. They would likely all be prisoners or dead within a few months from now.
It's Fallschirmjäger. Not Fallschirmjager.
II have the book Battle of the Bulge then and now, it's great to see the "live" footage of the stills from the book
The very opening scene shows two soldiers, one highly decorated, iron cross and close combat clasp carrying a rifle, the second carrying a stg 44. This soldier is also pictured crouched pumping his fist. He was killed two days later by artillery fire.
A second scens shows three men crouched under a M8 Greyhound talking and smoking, the officer Untersturmfuhrer Stieve was killed in January 1945.
It shows tiger 222 with passengers enjoying captured cigarettes, tank commander Unterscharfuhrer Kurt Siowa with earphones, one covering a ear for radio traffic, the other ear free to listen to local sounds, you won,t see that on any Americian movie.
This was great clear footage, they were very tired, cold, hungry and probably wet.
They are moving back and forth near destroyed vehicles for propaganda footage after the battle.
@@aceclash Yes the camera footage was taken after the convoy was shot up. It was staged the dead bodies were removed and the pictures taken.
But these were the men who shot up the American colum.
Correct. All that footage was staged. They were part of KG Hansen.

No Army lawyers in this unit. They could not cut it.
A great army and a great generation sacrificed for an insane ideology. A tragedy!
With respect to your post, they fought to defend Germany and Europe from the forces it has succumbed to this very day. Open your eyes and take a look around from nation to nation and you will clearly see what Germany stood to defend against. The history books indoctrinate us with disinformation, falsehoods and lies.. The truth knows no boundaries and fears no investigation however those who seek it or broadcast their findings are persecuted, denigrated and even imprisoned for finding and telling the truth..
God bless all those who suffered.

then it's rather a rare model.
Perhaps it's of inferior caliber used for anti-tank purpose, but then it's too high.
I have to look up on google for the different versions of the US Army 105 howitzer.
My grandfather moved to poland from portugal in 1938, he was in western poland when the invasion began and was taken back to germany as a POW, he joined the waffen SS and was deployed to auschwitz in february of 1941, he was there until the soviets invaded and had to flee to iran, he then lived in the kurdistan region of iraq for many years and unfortunately passed away in northern iraq in 1975. all the same, I respect the man and the life he lived. I do believe the SS was one of the greatest military groups in the world
What a Boss in the First Scene
The clip of the WSS has been much debated and I think there was an attempt by vets to identify who they were but in the end no one really knows. If they survived I wonder if they ever saw this clip.
