Low flying choppers became the prey. Disabling the distance travvelled fuse also seemingly increased effective range by a lot - again, effective against choppers. And when they did show up to inspect a weapons cache, they failed to address the intentions of what they were doing there at the time. This led to confusion among the locals (locals who were not necessarily connected to Aidid but possibly at least partially so), who thought the foreigners were there to take control of the radio broadcasts, which were the predominant medium of Somalia. And when the violence did break out, the UN body involved was tactically inept, and suffered massive casualties. And while there were Americans and even Italians present, the failure to have unit cohesion amongst such a diverse contingent, and the difficulty to communicate with each other on the battlefield could possibly have been the catalyst that caused such tactical ineptitude.

@@OmmerSyssel by intelligence failure, by failing to address rumors that UNOSOM planned to take control over Radio Mogadishu, and reassure the populace that it wasn't a goal of UNOSOM to do so.

@dariot707 Well if you actually knew, you would know that the US-backed Ethiopian invasion destroyed the Islamic Courts Union that came to power in 2006. Somalia was recovering in 2006. Do research next time.
@fuoco1365 if Somalia was left alone, it would have recovered as the Islamic Courts Union were returning stability. George Bush gave the green light to Ethiopia to invade and destroy it based on alleged links to terror. The CIA also funded warlords against the union. The Marines had four M1 Abrams tanks there from the time we landed to the time we departed. I was a tank commander on one of the M1s. We did many combat patrols around Mogadishu. Our call sign was "Animal" which is what the Somalis called the tanks. I often wished we had still been there when the Blackhawk went down....

Just like Vietnam and Afghanistan only this wouldve been a war we couldve won with relative ease
The last war that was worth fighting for was ww2. Vietnam up until 2001 was a waste. The 9/11 attacks are tricky and as time goes on, the evidence is starting to look like some very wealthy elites wanted to invade afghanistan and iraq for monetary gain. Not for freedom, we were fed all these years.

Can't stabilize nations who have a population that's not very peaceful, civilized and are always prone to violence and leaders who are incompetent, corrupt and are completely incapable of having what it takes to run a country properly.
If many of these failed nations had even a mostly peaceful population that was willing to work hard and leaders that had some humility and were willing to learn from people that were smarter than them that would be a solid foundation to build upon, but far too many countries have neither and then end up becoming crapholes that can't really ever be saved outside of a miracle happening.
