    As someone that only played DQ2 on the SFC, I found the balance to be nearly perfect in that version. The only exceptions would be the last 3 bosses, which were pure stat gates that took a few hours of grinding to beat since I hadn't done any prior. I was only around level 28, iirc. No amount of RNG or strategy would get me through any of these walls, so I spent 30 minutes grinding to beat that last miniboss, an hour for Hargon, then 3 or 4 hours for Malroth, which still required some lucky RNG at around level 38-40.
    Overall, though, the SFC version gave a great natural sense of progression and provided a great increasing challenge from start to finish thanks to me never grinding. If I ever went somewhere I shouldn't have been yet, I would get wiped or close to it, and I really had to work with the areas statistically available to me to follow the hints.
    My favorite DQ tied with 5 (I need to get back to 11, however). It's a fun 15-20 hour adventure with a needlessly massive spike at the end, at least in older versions.

Gonna have to sit down and read a guide about the most optimal way to go. Then I can finally move on and start playing 4,5,6,7, 8, and 9 on my 3ds. • @RoninCatholic
      @RoninCatholic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not a problem, though. It's about learning the strength of your different heroes and the monsters you fight and making choices about where to attack; the more modern version is a lot more _convenient_ but it also makes the battles require less tactical thought on the part of the player.

    • @L33PL4Y
      @L33PL4Y 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RoninCatholic Agreed. MOTHER (aka EarthBound Beginnings) had the same feature. It's not a problem with the game, it's a problem with the player not strategizing properly.

    • @RoninCatholic
      @RoninCatholic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@L33PL4Y Even in games that have the "redirect attacks if the enemy is dead" feature, it's often _better tactics_ to spread out some of your attacks a bit anyway instead of treating each random encounter as a test of how rapidly you can press "confirm" and make your quick, weak-hitting heroes attack a monster and drop it to a handful of HP only for your slow, strong attacker who would've knocked it out in one hit to waste most of his damage finishing off a mostly dead monster rather than one at full strength. I think what Golden Sun did by making heroes default to the Defend action if the thing they were trying to do (attacking a monster but someone else kills it first, trying to heal a specific party member but a monster kills them first, etc.) is the best option mixing the incentive to actually strategize with the convenience of benefiting the player (rather than "Oops, you just wasted your thousand gold healing potion on someone who died before you could reach him")

    I know you're strapped for time a lot Jirard, but I managed to figure this game out myself, without having to look anything up. I scoured over the map and thought through each area to figure out what I hadn't done yet. I spoke to each person and took in every hint. And, you maybe didn't know this since you didn't mention it, there is a soothsayer in Dirkandor (the place where you have to fight a sabrecat [just one, not many like you said] for the king there) that will give you hints on what to do next. Great inclusion for a very open game like this one. Having done it all myself, I have to say...it was super fun figuring it all out by myself. Feels good. Great game.

    I feel you're not being 100% clear on the dead monster targeting thing. The game actually does take that in consideration by grouping similar enemies together. For example, say you have five slimes and one rat. Because the slimes are grouped together, when one is defeated, the next party member auto targets the next in the group. Only if the last slime in the group is killed and the rat remains, do you have that situation where a party member wastes a turn.

    Glad to hear some love for DQ2, I have had several friends play the first game and love it only to fall victim to the sequel's original version and never return to the series. I guess I know now that suggesting newer versions is an option rather than skipping it entirely. I definitely had a hard time at the end because I reached Rhone around level 22 or so, but with the adjustments made to newer versions it seems much less overwhelming to finish. I played through DQ2 on the NES and it was actually really fun, in part because of how rough it is. Playing through the Switch and SNES versions made me think "Wow, they really spoil you in these versions." For example, in the NES version, getting your hand on an mp recovery item was a crapshoot. If you could get it, you basically didn't use it until the end for the final boss fight. In the SNES version, it's like they're just passing them out.
    Anyways, despite its flaws, I highly recommend the NES version for a first playthrough if you can enjoy the grind.

    It's amusing to me to see what the younger posters think of these games. Decades ago, we loved them. They were cutting edge at the time and captured my imagination like few things in my subsequent life.

      I wasn't born to see the original release of these games (95 kid here) but eventually I did play them, somehow going completely blind.
      The way the adventure in DQ3 keeps on getting bigger and bigger is something I haven't seen replicated by many other games (sorry if I'm not explaining myself very well, english is not my first language). It takes you places you wouldn't imagine and the progression is so well paced that it will not be until almost the end that you will look back at the epic adventure you've had during the past 30 hours.
      And that ending! It completely recontextualized the adventures from 1 and 2. It gives you this level of accomplishment like no other game, it makes you feel like an absolute badass and is the definition of pay-off in gaming.
      Whenever I think of epic fantasy LOTR will come to mind first, but quite frankly DQ3 is not far behind

    Dragon Quest is by far my second favorite game series behind Zelda, though I'm hit more heavily by nostalgia for this series, something I love about dragon quest never straying from its traditional turn based roots like Final Fantasy did, when I get a Dragon Quest game I knownexactly what I'm getting and love it all the same, stillworking through the first game when I feel like it before going into the second game but ill get there

    If you're looking for a recommendation for DQ3, the GBC version is the BEST and most complete - but also the longest by around 100 hours.

    • @phoenixshadow4631
      @phoenixshadow4631 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its good to see that Jirard brought some new player to the Dragon Quest games.
      If you want to play a Dragon Quest game with less tediousness then the first three, I'd recommend playing the prequel to the Erdrick trilogy that is DQ 11 S. It has a larger and overall far better written cast of characters and rather than being the descendent of a great hero you are the reincarnation of a great hero and yet you are treated as a criminal on the run for a very large portion of the game which makes it have a more interesting spin because you as the player know that you have to be constantly be on the run in order to reach the point where you can save the world. Overall its probably ranked 4th in my standings.
      Another DQ game that does really well with some interesting story beats especially for side characters and the other party members is DQ8 which is commonly rated by many as one of the top 5 if not one of the top 3 mainline games. It has a great 3ds remake which allows the player to get two of the best side characters as party members, another optional ending, a super dungeon, and even new sidequests that let you obtain certain items earlier than otherwise (not by much like maybe a town or two ahead but still neat) or even just obtain items for free compared to in the stores. DQ 8 is also one of the funniest games and usually requires very little grinding especially if you do the sidequests, in fact the only times I've ever grinded in the game are for an optional task of beating the monster arena as early as possible and for beating a boss that is best described as the midway point of the game (which is really hard unless you either beat the monster arena specifically rank b early (so built in grinding) or grind to the levels where multiheal becomes available). In all though its definitely one of the better games having a place as my second favorite game in the mainline series.
      The Zenithian trilogy is also a good option specifically DQ4 and DQ5 as they expanded the party system, and really had you play through the character's pasts more. 4 let you play as a great warrior who just wants to save people, a pair of sisters looking to avenge a crime against them one being a dancer and one a fortune teller, a weapons merchant on the run (this part can be a slog but also let's you get all the money you'd ever need and let's you see an interesting side of things that you normally dont), a martial arts loving princess and her entourage of a priest and mage who go on a journey to a grand tournament only to encounter issue after issue on the way, and of course the hero him/herself as this was also the first DQ to let you choose a gender for the hero as well as being one of the only DQ games to do so. 4 was definitely a piece that the series needed to get where it is today and is undisputed one of the best games in the series.
      5 was a game all about living the life of the main character from choosing their name at birth all the way until they got married, had a family, and ended up saving the world on the way. 5 is also commonly rated as one of the absolute best DQ games by almost every list I've ever seen largely due to the depth that it makes the player actually witness and feel throughout the game. While grinding can be a bit of slog its also largely optional as most grinding is done to try and obtain monsters for the party because monsters can join you now assuming you meet some special requirements in game. While I haven't gotten to play these as many times as some others these two are definitely top 3 material with 5 being my number 1 favorite and 4 in third.
      DQ9 is where customization shines for the series having the ability to fully customize the appearances and capabilities for the characters of the party with a great class system which expands overtime andaround 100 quest, more if you can get the stuff needed to hook up one fo the fan-made Nintendo internet stand in for the dS like Wiimfi. The story is by no means the best in the series but I'd say its definitely at least as good as the original Erdrick trilogy so decent enough. Grinding isn't needed too often unless you switch classes a lot but you really don't have to as you can make plenty of parties that can beat the game out of the first six classes just have one all-rounder of some kind, one dps, a priest, and fill in the last role with either another dps or all-rounder. Overall though its a pretty decent game and was actually one of the first mainline DQ games I ever got to play, and I've actually completed it three times and beaten it two more after that (the last two times I didn't have the Nintendo wifi as it was shut down). This game held my attention for so long despite some of the issues that I'd say its my number 5 for sure.
      The games to avoid or just watch others play are 6 and 7 as both tend to be more of a slog then the rest, however if you do play them they do have a lot of fun content its just that some of the grinding is terrible and 7 specifically is an extremely long game for dragon quest standards with some people playing for over 100 hours before finishing the game.

    I was 5 when I DQ1 back in 1990, as "Dragon Warrior". It began my love of JRPGs, RPGs in general, and classical music. That score in NES chiptune was... I can't describe it. It was a beautiful thing, beautifully orchestrated, and baffling in that it was coming out of the little gray box.
    Also, since I was 5 when I beat this game last...

    kids who've never played an NES game. You old folks always say those games were so hard, harder than most games today. How I come I breezed through Dragon Warrior 1-3. lol
    seriously though. I was a bit skeptical about picking this up because I wasn't sure I had the patience to play an old brutal NES RPG. I don't mind a challenging game but I tend to steer away from absolutely brutal.
    Great video though, Subscribed & looking forward to see what other content you've done along with future vidoes. video, dialogue [though slightly loud] and depth were all excellent.
    I'm definitely leaning toward picking up the retail version now. I have all the time in the world but I just don't know if/when I'd actually get to it. Past few years I hadn't really played many RPGs because I was busy playing all sorts of other games and genres. This year though I'm hammering out almost exclusively RPGs and hoping to keep a steady diet of JRPG/RPGs moving forward; again. So far this year I've already knocked out the entire Cold Steel series, P5 Strikers, Nier Replicant, Ys IX, almost got the platinum trophy in Scarlet Nexus, along with a few other titles and platinum trophies this year alone. Problem is I keep tackling games I end up buying 2 so my backlog isn't shrinking all that fast lol.

    I’ve got the NES cartridge and beat it back in the 90’s and a few times since. I’ve also got the iOS remake and it’s okay, I guess. It makes the game ridiculously easy though. I am pretty sure the 3rd and 4th bosses in the final gauntlet both cast Fullheal, which makes surviving and lasting to the end with enough in the tank tough. Glad you enjoyed the remake.
