      Fun Fact: There *WAS* an attempt to remake The Adventure Of Link back in the mid-90's.
      The project eventually changed direction toward becoming a new game instead.
      This new Zelda game was none other than Ocarina Of Time.
      Bonus Fact: The AoL Remake Project that became OoT wasn't the first time a revisit of an old project led to a new game that has become iconic. Not long after A Link To The Past was released, an idle project was formed from the idea of porting ALttP to the GameBoy. This resulted in the development of Link's Awakening.
      Furthermore, it wasn't the last time either. When Capcom wanted to make some Zelda games after the turn of the millennium, one of their pitches was a remake of the first game, The Hyrule Fantasy.
      Eventually, when the plan to make Seed Of The Wonder Tree into a trilogy fell through, the remake of the first game was revamped and released as Oracle Of Seasons.

  • @uberculex

    Legitimate criticism that I can think of. You can get all the way to the final boss without the super hidden final spell (you have to find an item that allows you to remove forest tiles and use that item on a specific tile in the middle of nowhere to find a town). The super hidden final spell makes the boss able to be hit. This wouldn't be an issue if you could get out of the dungeon and back easily. It is a slog full of floating enemies that move at random intervals over instant death traps while you have knockback on every hit that would make Simon Belmont blush. I don't know, I never really liked the defend it series. It feels a bit too strawmanish for my taste. The internet always has the worst arguments even when I agree with Jirard.

    • @canuckj8382
      @canuckj8382 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You raise a valid point but the item in question is the hammer, you can’t even go the second island without the hammer so the player should have the hammer by the time they reach the area with the super secret hidden town

    • @SeveredLegs
      @SeveredLegs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it's really unlikely that you wouldn't know you were missing a final spell. Firstly, there'd be a gap in the inventory. Second, there's a totally obvious town near the 6th Palace that you'd totally end up investigating. And if you got the message from the old man saying you weren't strong enough (or whatever he says), you'd know there was other stuff to find. And I think the old man tells you to look in the woods to the east or something to that effect? And even if you weren't totally sure where it was (I didn't know as a kid at first, when I was like, 8), you'd have ended up going through that cave that leads to New/Hidden Kasuto and you'd see a dead end with trees.....you'd be like me and try to hack down all those trees. I wasn't some genius, and I figured it out. It's not easy, no. But if you've gotten that far in the game, I think it's likely you'd figure it out. There are Dragon Quest tiles that are more obscure and people still find those crests in DQ2...and that damned Water Flying Cloth in the Dragon Horn North Tower. So basically, I think finding the Thunder spell sort of "just happens."

    I think if this was any other game it would be remembered as an innovative classic. But because it’s a Zelda game, the series that is probably the most beloved of all time, it’s just seen as mediocre. When I was a kid I had no perception of how “bad” the game was. They just gave us a Zelda game, and I played it until I beat it.
    I do remember it being insanely difficult - the part on Death Mountain with the maze to find the hammer took me weeks. But that was just the way it was back then. This was kind of the Dark Souls of games back then. The dark atmosphere a long with the punishing difficulty made it extremely intimidating, but when I beat it I felt so satisfied.

    Honestly, I really enjoyed Zelda II, potentially more than the DS games
    I think unless you really enjoy exploration and stuff, play with a guide, and that takes care of the hardest aspect of the game
    I’m exceptionally poor at reaction time and all the traditional game skills, but I was able to beat it with some strategizing and abuse of bit/bot(?) spawners
    Also the ‘send you back to the start’ point isn’t as bad as it sounds, because unlike a lot of games of the era, at least with the GC collection version I played, you don’t actually lose progress. You still have all items you collected and dungeons you completed, you just have to walk back to where you were.
    It’s been years, but I remember sometimes dying on purpose just to have my lives refilled to three before I did something like fight a boss, start a hard area with low lives, etc, and I remember that being extremely worthwhile

    Also, that argument of "It's easy to pick your battles because you can see enemies in the overworld" is nonsense. You can see (and fight) enemies in the overworld in every other Zelda title as well. If anything, it's harder to pick your battles in Zelda II because you don't know where the shadows are going to appear, and they will chase you down.

      If it helps, he didn't quite point out that you don't literally start over with a game over, you just lose all your experience points _since the last level up_ which is still frustrating. and what's more, the game rewards you for saving up your XP and deliberately avoiding leveling up by giving you more options of what to raise, which makes it even more tense when you can just die to some bullshit. But it's still never a FULLY full-on retro-game 'game over' situation where you lose all your progress.
      I don't think anyone can really expect to pick this up and enjoy it unless they love simple retro games already. but it's not as bad as it sounds (even when it's being defended it usually does sound bad yeah).
      there's a youtube channel that fucks with code to make different shit happen in old games, like jump heights and respawn point behaviors, I wonder if that game could tweak Zelda 2 until it felt comfortable running and jumping around. Maybe give Link a longer fucking hurtbox for the sword.

I personally hated it. Others might not, but I did.

    I never understood the complaints about this game. Both at the time and now. If this game came out for the first time now, as is, as a Zelda game or as something original, people would be completely in love with it. And at the time, it was airtight and the mechanics are predictable and rock solid (which is more than you could say for most of what came out in those early NES days). This game is completely amazing and all I can say about those who complain about it, is that they probably just played it when they were young and thought it was hard. It's a challenge, but not anything unreasonable at all. You can barrel through it using superior combat, or you can be slow and methodical. The maze elements of the palaces are not complicated until the Great Palace. The "puzzles" and items you need in towns are mostly easy to find (with the exception being Hidden Kasuto). And even if you get sent back to the beginning when you die, it takes like....5 minutes to walk back to where you were. Not a serious issue.

When going to a temple, get the item. Solve the rest and beat the boss of you wish, but DON’T enter the room after the boss! You only need the item to progress until it’s time for the final temple. When you have reached level 6 in all three stats, go back and place the crystals. Max levels achieved!

    I think Zelda 2 is legitametly just a more fun game than Zelda 1. The first game my technically be slightly better designed, but I prefer playing Zelda 2 a lot more. I beat it relatively recently for the first time, and I think if a remaked fixed a few of its biggest problems (allowing you to spawn from towns and at the begining of dungeons after game overs, making some of the enemy patterns less bs, and making some of the requirements for the beating the game more obvious) it could go from a good game to an absolutely amazing game. It was actually extremely well designed for an NES game imo, but I will admit the later part of the game caused me to read a guide. I needed to get one of the last upgrades in order to progress, which they don't tell you is a requirement and then I also got all the way through the final part of the game and through the last dungeon to the first boss there, only to find I couldn't attack it because I missed the thunderbolt spell. So having to go back through that area was a pain in the ass. But iron out some of the stupid NES era design issues like that, and I honestly think it far outshines the first game.

    Zelda II haters aren't even close to the majority now. Take one look at this comment section. I can't even find *A* hater (no, the one in the mirror doesn't count), let alone a majority. The internet's opinion has flipped. Zelda II is as much the black sheep now as Majora's Mask.
    Yeah, *I* may hate this game. I still hate this game. Though I will admit that the main reason I hate it because it has great ideas and concepts being held back by not the best execution. That's why I don't see the point in arguing with people who love the game - we agree 99% of the time. If you're going to try and tell me everything you love about the game, there's no point, I agree. I would argue, to the point of it requiring a guide to complete- so did the first one. In fact, Miyamoto designed the first game to be so full of bizarre secrets that you would have to meet up with other players and discuss your findings, as a way of making a single-player game a social experience.
